I was all too happy to support Barack during the primary season. I donated to the campaign and showed up at the local offices in my home town to provide whatever support I could. I spoke to friends and swayed opinions. I believe that Barack is the better of the 2 front-runner candidates in the Democratic party.
But I can no longer in good conscience evangelize for him as a candidate. I have a fundamental belief in the 4th amendment of the constitution and a vote to pass HR 6304 simply flies in the face of this. Among the people I know and have some influence over their beliefs are based primarily on libertarian principals and it had previously been easy to make the argument that although Obama is not the perfect candidate he is certainly best of the potential winners. Although I still hold this belief to be true, I can no longer make a sound argument toward the undecided voters that I could before.
This is the kind of issue that is not going lose votes to John McCain, but it is certainly going to lose votes. This will drive people who were on the fence between a vote for a third-party that they believe in fundamentally and a vote to a avoid another Republican over the fence in the other direction. Furthermore, although it doesn't sway my vote for Obama, this will certainly drive me to donate my time and money to an organization like the ACLU that more consistently fights for the issues that I believe in.
