First, why does anyone say "faith-based" when "religious" is a perfectly good word?
I'm not happy at all about the news today, but I guess that's the point--Barack wants to prove that he's not only for people like me (people who believe in fundamental constitutional principles such as the separation of church and state). Well, let Ned Flanders be his small donor for a while then.

Obama said he would scrap Bush's program and start his own version that does NOT allow discriminatory hiring OR prosteltyzing (sp?).

Obama may be saying he will prohibit discrimanatory hiring but the fact is he will be giving my tax dollars to churches who do not pay taxes and who do practice discrimination in their religious ministries. This is an affront to all those who have suffered from the pain of hate and abuse of religious organizations. I will not support the use of tax dollars to churches until churches start paying taxes.

I suspect faith-based is supposed to be some sort of euphemism, so that you don't see this for what it really is: putting religion into government. It's sort of an end run around the separation of church and state.
Yes, Obama is trying to "reach out" beyond his base, but I also think there's a bit of political strategy here. He's trying to hit McCain -- and the Republican party -- where they are allegedly bullet-proof and where Dems usually don't tread. He "admires" McCain's military service but doesn't think it guarantees his suitability to be president (gasp!), and he now he's trying to wrest religion from McCain as an issue. I agree it is worrisome and has made me think twice about my next donation, but ultimately I think it's more Machiavellian than anything else. Whatever it takes to win.
