I am not going to say that Mr. Dobbs is a racist, because that term seems to mean different things to different people. Then again, my "defense" of Lou Dobbs is limited to saying that he does not necessarily qualify as a racist by every definition. Right. With "friends" like me, Mr. Dobbs hardly needs enemies.
At a minimum, however, Mr. Dobbs is guilty of pandering to other people's paranoid fantasies. Unless he is downright stupid, which is not likely, he is actively encouraging the CNN audience to believe that the President of the United States is not constitutionally eligible for his office, and that as a result, Barack Obama cannot legitimately be the president.
People who encourage such nonsense are in some ways worse than those who actually believe it. Some people get worked so much into a frenzy that I am concerned that some nut, egged on by the foolish rantings of Mr. Dobbs and others, will decide that it is his duty to rid the country of the supposed pretender to the presidency.
Does CNN really want to be seen as the network that promotes drivel that brings out the worst in the American people? They should leave that to Fox News.
