I am a bit disappointed at the moment. Just recently i was updated that Obama had changed stances on fossil fuel and offshore drilling. It's not surprising but still not a move i was jumping for joy about....
I do not like fossil fuel. I do not like oil, gas, or coal as a fuel to rely on. I don't like to consider it an option and I appose offshore oil drilling, to me it represents the Oil industry, which has far to much influence already. If we give them a slice they'll take the cake, or in this case- the wildlife reserves and the coasts. One of the few things that made me really attracted to Obama was his stance on Offshore drilling and his rather green energy plan. It sounded a bit radical but inspirational all the same. They were things i had been hoping to hear for years. But recently CNN had announced Obama would consider offshore oil drilling and looking into clean coal energy. Both requiring fossil fuel...and i just felt my heart sink a bit.
Personally I feel any more drilling would simply continue to feed Americas addiction on fossil fuel. The rising gas prices, though painful, have been a valuable lesson, a needed slap in the face to make us aware of how vulnerable our dependents on oil makes us. Its almost like caffeine or tobacco. It is nightmare to quit cold turkey- but for some its the only way to really quit. Unfortunately we are not going to do something so drastic. It was a fantasy, a hope that such a change would be miracle grow to the development of alternative energy.
Is it the end of the world? or the end my support for Obama? am i going to die? No. Its just I... don't fully understand clean coal. It sound almost like an oxymoron, and oil drilling doesn't appeal to me in either. With so many alternatives available why should we use such primitive sources of energy? If we wanted to do offshore drilling it means we'd have to probably invite big oil companies to start digging away. Now maybe If it was owned by the government, contracted by big oil and bought by the government and became government owned, and the income it brought went back to us some how- that would make it far more appealing.
I hate to admit this but Russia had a similar idea. Their oil companies had become so corrupt that they were confiscated by the government and the income the brought went into government project and gave them more control on the price of there oil. Though i would not recommend we went that far- a Government owned energy company doesn't sound so bad. Just like affordible health care, and education. If we tried that, these offshore rigs could be used to fund the development and construction of the alternative energy that we all hope to see as the norm someday in the next decade or so.
