Pakistan says no to US military

In Pakistan, the New Foreign Minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, made it clear US forces would no longer be able to operate unilaterally within the nation's borders.

"We cannot allow any other country to take action inside our territory. This is a matter of sovereignty and we cannot compromise on it," Mr Qureshi said.

Meeting the military commanders yesterday, the Government emphasized its determination to pursue dialogue as a way of turning back the tide of jihadi militant insurgency threatening the nuclear-armed nation, rather than the US-endorsed military tactics used by President Pervez Musharraf.

It appears that Pakistan is trying to bring the country together through diplomacy to undermine the conditions that seem to create the extremist militants. Wait... let me get this right... the people in Pakistan think bombing people doesn't convince them you're right? What a noble concept.

Then again, there is that little issue of Osama Bin Laden. He probably near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, which puts Pakistan in the spotlight. Surely they wouldn't try diplomacy with Bin Laden, would they? Doubtful, but it is clear diplomacy is the primary goal.

In the end, it seems this all hinges on the people in the tribal areas of Pakistan's willingness to be receptive to the diplomatic efforts. Modernizing the infrastructure and economy of that area will surely cause the recruiting pools of the militant extremists to dwindle.
