I've started an ongoing "event" called Be a Barack Buddy at http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4g4qr. Already close to 50 people are participating, so I wanted to spread the word and explain a little bit more about what it means to be a Barack Buddy.
The idea behind the Barack Buddy effort is to take a truly personal approach to expanding the Obama movement. It involves individuals volunteering to pick someone as their "Buddy" and get them to the next step on their path toward participation. That can be educating someone who just doesn't know enough, sharing your personal story to get someone from educated to engaged or helping someone who's already engaged but unsure of what to do next excited enough to participate fully.
The person you Buddy with can be a family member, a co-worker, someone at your place of worship, a neighbor...someone you can share a personal bond with. You can answer their questions, help clear up any misconceptions they might have, or take them all the way through volunteering and really participating. The more you put into your Buddy relationship, the better it will be.
The date and time on the event signup are artificial...just the nature of how the online system here works. So, don't think this is a one-time thing or that it happens at a certain time. This is something we will be doing continuously throughout the campaign and beyond. As more and more people sign up, I'll be asking them to share their success stories and their suggestions for ways to identify a potential person to Buddy with, tools and techniques to use, etc., and then I'll report those ideas back to the Buddy Community.
For every person who signs up to be a Barack Buddy, the Obama movement can grow by at least one additional new person, and even more. There are tons of people out there who may want to be a part of the Obama Wave but just need someone they trust or respect to help them come on board. You can be that person, and you can change their lives...and by extension change the direction of our nation. It's as easy as being their Barack Buddy!
Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or want some suggestions. I've already committed to being a Buddy for two people (my mother and a co-worker/friend), and as I work with them, I'm sure I'll learn some interesting stuff. YES WE CAN!!
