I am curious to find out how your co-workers feel about the election. Is it split? Is there a clear favorite? How about your community?
I may as well start by saying I live in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. This area has been politically mixed. This is a surprise given the long labor history here. The congressman here is Charles Dent( republican). However the Mayors of Easton, Bethlehem and Allentown are all Dems.
I dont have a real feel yet for the general election, either among co-workers or the community. Working for the Post Office I have always found it amazing how many of us vote aganist our best interests.
I believe with the proper amount of attention (lots) this red leaning area can be flipped, with Obama winning the general here and Ms. Sam Bennett beating the republican incumbant.
I am going to do whatever I can to ensure happy days are here again.
I will say more about Congressman Dent tommorrow.

Not sure whether you're a union member or not, but I sincerely hope you are. As an APWU officer, we're very happy to have great union officers in Lehigh Valley. Keep working on your members. It's interesting that you mention workers who often vote against their own interests, and those of their family. Unfortunately, it happens too often. Unions represent their members and raise their standard of living, only to see them identify with the people who did nothing to help them achieve their new status. APWU is proud to have endorsed Senator Obama earlier in the process, and will do whatever we can to see him elected. This country just cannot afford to have John McSame in the White House.

I live in a surprising right-leaning (gerrymandered) district. Good-paying, Union-represented jobs in the area are going away. We are the world headquarters of Caterpillar, but the two-tier wage system and outsourcing mean it just isn't the way it used to be.
The APWU-represented workforce at the plant is around 95% organized, and the majority seem to support Barack Obama. Those who do not are one-issue voters who vote agaist their best interests by aligning themselves with worker unfriendly politicians.
Republicans can only get worker votes by trotting out their wedge issues, but they really care more about getting votes and power than whether or not people can own certain types of weapons, or have to wear motorcycle helmets, or have legal access to abortion.
Here's the hard truth: You can't afford to put gas in your Hog, or buy clips for your gun if you're unemployed. Vote your job, lobby your issues!
