Do NOT Wear Politcal Clothing to the Polls!

This was just brought to my attention yesterday, but in many counties throughout the United States, it is ILLEGAL to wear political clothing and other items such as buttons to polling places when you go to vote because it’s considered “PASSIVE ELECTIONEERING.” As most people know, you’re not allowed to campaign within so many yards of a polling place during Election Day as they don’t want anyone to feel pressured to vote one way or the other while at the poll. Wearing political clothing and the like is considered a form of campaigning in many places whether you agree or not.

That’s bad news for Barack Obama since many people are wearing his clothing as an official style these days. The Philadelphia Inquirer just reported a story yesterday that the GOP is planning on strictly enforcing the 10-year old law in Philly in this election season as a way to suppress Obama’s vote as much as possible in a swing state. Being that this issue hasn’t been widely discussed, they can be very effective in their efforts since they understand that much of Obama’s appeal will be with first-time voters who may not know the rules and regulations at a polling place and will be completely discouraged from voting even if they are faced with a little bit of resistance. And then it’ll be 2000 all over again with people complaining there was a Republican conspiracy to deny their vote for one reason or another and he could potentially lose hundreds, if not thousands, of votes nationwide. I’m not going to say any names, but we ALL know someone who is waiting for their rhinestone and glitter Obama t-shirt to arrive in the mail any day now so they can wear it to the polls after they get off work on November 4th and head straight to the election party afterwards. We have also seen teens and other young adults with Obama’s name and image airbrushed all over their pants and shoes who have been inspired to register and vote for the first time in their lives. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell them when you come across them that they CANNOT wear that stuff to the polls on election day or they risk possibly being turned away if they are not able to cover-up or change clothes onsite. And you know each side now have lawyers monitoring most polling places since the 2000 election. And we can all assume that they’ll watch someone stand in line for a hour or more wearing a Obama shirt and then dispute their right to vote as soon as they get to the front of the line because of their shirt and hope that person will get too angry and frustrated to change clothes and return. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN THIS YEAR! The Philadelphia Inquirer Story
