What makes this so disappointing is that the so called concern Jackson has about what Obama said on Father's Day is a crock.
Obama was in a Black church. The Apostolic Church, is a fairly conservative denomination. The pastor of this church, Bishop Brazier, has spent his life working in the community to turn around gang violence, drug trafficking, voilence against women, poverty, out of wedlock births, create jobs and descent housing, etc. - all activities and behaviors, which the church considers to be sin or the result of sin. Barack was speaking to this crowd who were in complete agreement wtih him. The ideas he used were ideas they hear regularly in that church - in fact, they are the ideas that I have heard (as a former member of Trinity United Church of Christ) from Jeremiah Wright to black men and women also regularly.
The black church deals with these issues regularly. This is the responsibility of the church. Barack is in his right to say these things to the church - I would have a problem if he got on television and started saying these things to a general audience, accusing blacks of somehow being especially immoral - like Pat Buchanan cannot seem to resist doing. There are legitimate institutional problems, which effect Black, Brown, and poor whites more than they do mainstream whites - all these can be addressed by the policies Barack holds regarding reforming the Educational system, providing healthcare to Americans, his energy policy and much more that will help create jobs and relieve some of the systemic economic issues that oppress these groups.
Jackson really is so wrong on this. I used to have a professor in Seminary who knew Jesse Jackson well. He would say of him "that whenever Jesse comes in the room, he sucks up all the air out." He also would say, "that if Jesus came in the room Jesse would try to compete with him by claiming to be the true Messiah."
Suffice it to say, that Jesse Jackson is about Jesse Jackson and not about any real concern for damage Barack is supposedly doing to the AA community.
