This is the title of an op ed piece in "The Oregonian" by Rich Lowry, 7/8/08. I hope Mr Obama or at least his staff keeps track of it. I for one am one who wants to believe. However, as the mentioned piece points out, Barack seems to be flip-flopping big time. What about telling the truth, ending 'politics as usual'; "triangulation" etc. I would appreciate that at the very least Barack's team has filed all his public pronouncements so far in the campaign and use that as parameter for present and future pronouncements. I do not mind a REASONED explanation of why Barack has changed his position, as nothing is written in stone. But I take offense at smuggling new positions as if they had always been Mr Obama's. Case in point, public financing; case in point: what is this of advocating tax dollars to fund faith-based education initiatives? Give me a break! leave that to Mc Cain!

I don't see any inconsistency in Obama's taking the active potential of faith communities seriously, since that's where he got his start in public life. And frankly, a well-administered program to enlist the energies of these communities to solve problems seems to me a better use of tax dollars to me than a federal program that will be awash in more than 50% waste and administrative cost. Unless they fire all the bureaucrats, we are better off being served by local communities.
In so far as this initiative sounds republican, so be it--Obama has always said the point is to govern EVERYONE, not just the left that has claimed him as its own (I am way on the left, so that means me too). Faith communities are the centers of a lot of peoples' lives. It is not the advocacy of a particular religion to partner with many of them, and that advocacy was what the founders wanted to avoid.

I thought that this country had been founded on the premise of separation of powers and SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. I do not want my tax dollars to go to ANY denomination. If anything can save the world from ayatollahs, Christian or otherwise, is a militant secularism, that at the same time, DOES respect people's beliefs as a matter of personal conscience.
Perhaps I did not make myself clear enough: it is not one slick move that worries me: IT IS AN INCREASING PATTERN. If I could cut and paste the opinion piece I mentioned I gladly would, as it is better written that what I would be able to.
You cannot be all things to all people. If leadership mean anything, it is that. To lead is the opposite of pander.
