"While I have voted for Republicans all of my life, I am voting for Senator Obama in this election because, when it comes to the future of our country, the stakes are too high," said Bill Ruckelshaus, Seattle resident, Strategic Director of Madrona Venture Group, and former Republican administration official.
"Senator Obama has a specific plan that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, grow our economy, and tackle climate change. Senator Obama's New Energy for America Plan will invest $150 billion over the next ten years to encourage private efforts to develop clean energy technologies in a clean energy future. Not only is it Obama's intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050, but his plan should create millions of new green jobs."

“Although I have supported Republicans in the past and even ran as one, I support Senator Obama now because he is obviously thoughtful and intelligent and puts overall human values over all others. He is the candidate who will bring about real change in DC,” said Sammamish resident and former Republican State Senate candidate and Retired Boeing Executive Bob Brady. “John McCain supports more of the same: leadership that fosters more class separation, environmental destruction and senseless economic policies. Senator Obama has the right priorities to ensure that our economy is strong by ending tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas and putting tax breaks in the hands of the people who need it: middle-class Americans.”
“I have never voted for a Democrat for President in my life because I never saw a true leader like Senator Obama who wants to lead the world by building on what is best about America,” said Bainbridge Island resident and Co-founder and Managing Director of ARCH Venture Partners Bob Nelson. “I trust Senator Obama to do the right thing and to listen to dissenting views. I believe he deeply cares about the country as whole, not just a few partisan factions. I am not voting for him based on a list of his positions, but I will cast my vote based on a belief that he is the right man at the right time for the United States.”
While these Republicans have different reasons why they support Senator Obama, all are motivated to spread his message of change and desire to reach out not to a “Red America” or a “Blue America,” but the United States of America. Whether it is issues like health care or standing up for the middle class, Senator Obama is their clear choice for president. The following are quotes from two additional Washington Republicans for Obama.
“All of my life, I have voted for Republicans. This November, I am voting for Barack Obama because he understands all of the issues we face and has risen above the pettiness that plagues American politics. He brings out the best in us,” said Jeanie Schneider, an ER nurse who lives in Spokane. “Working in the ER, there is nowhere else the healthcare crisis is so apparent. The system is a mess. People can’t afford their prescriptions, so they stay sick and keep coming back to the ER. And they don’t have emergencies; they just can’t go anywhere else without insurance. The bottom line is that we have to fix it. Senator Obama has a plan to provide affordable, accessible health care for all.”
“I normally vote Republican but I have decided to vote for Barack Obama this year because I believe he is the man that can institute the changes our government needs,” said Dorothy Talley of Spokane. “I am tired of the politics of the last 8 years. We need a vibrant leader who can change the government to benefit the working people of this nation, not the lobbyists and special interests. I believe that Barack Obama is that leader. I also realize that both parties must work together to accomplish goals that benefit the entire nation. If anyone can work together with the Republicans, Obama is the one to do so.”
Bill Ruckelshaus was appointed as the first Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1970 by Richard Nixon and again to the same post by Ronald Reagan in 1980. During his tenure as Deputy Attorney General of the United States, Ruckelshaus bravely stood up to Richard Nixon when he famously resigned rather than obey an order from the President to fire the Watergate special prosecutor, Archibald Cox. Ruckelshaus also served as acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.
