What can we do right now to start to build interest in our areas? I know that elections are pretty far away, but it seems like things are already starting to move at a fast pace towards the finish line. This is the first time that I will be actively involved in campaigning for a candidate, but I have no idea of what to do. Any suggestions?

Well, lets start off by sending this website to our friends and everyone in your our mailing list. I noticed that the video allows you to send a link to a friend. We should remember ask our friends to pass it on to everyone they know as well.

Greetings Obama supporters. I've sent queries to the Obama campaign to see if they have a "point person" for the South Bend or Northern Indiana area. I will pass on information if it comes.
In the meantime, I plan to do a small mailing to friends and family letting them know about my support and about this website. Once we have an idea of how many folks we have for a core group. Then a planning meeting may be in order. We may want to touch base with the existing Notre Dame group - they probably have good shot at actually getting the Senator here for a rally.
I've got some campaign experience and hope I can be of help to get us going.

Probably a good idea would be to have a liaison between Indiana groups supporting Senator Obama. If we can pool our resources and plan a larger event than something just this group would do, it would make a bigger impression and perhaps draw out a higher number of attendees at events. I would be happy to act in that capacity, but whether or not I do, I still think it would be a helpful thing. One thing the progressive community is guilty of is splintering over individual issues and geographies rather than binding together and acting in a block like the conservatives tend to do so well, particularly when it's crunch time.
About events, I think we should try to get the music community and small business owners involved in this campaign. Bands and singers could stage concerts and attendees would make a donation to attend (I'm talking $5, $10, $20 and pay-what-you-can donations), for example, and small business owners could host these events (such as in cafes, bookstores, etcetera) and/or host such things as networking events and strategic planning events. Just some ideas.

I have started a group which I hope to grow as much as possible called IUSB Students for Obama. I will be working with the IUSB College Democrats Club on campus. I have also started a group called Young Women Voters Support Obama, now with 15 members, most from northern Indiana. These are just two examples concerning networking possibilities and pooling of resources.

What about a comedy Obama benefit? Comics and improv groups from the area (incl. Chicago, of course) could perform and attendees pay what they're able or a specific amount decided upon, or, if the show is held in a comedy club (say, The Funny Bone, if they're willing) then maybe all money for drinks could be donated in a lump sum to the campaign. Thoughts?

Hello, did want to let you all know that I will be hosting a get together at my home here in Elkhart on the 31st. I know its a little ways for the South Bend contingent, but in the event that noone from your area steps up, feel free to come on by. All the info can be found on my site, but basically expect snacks and discussion and don't expect a big fancy house and you'll be on the right track.
I think its important to remember that Indiana is a state that could very easily swing to the Democrats in 08 if they pick the right candidate ;) Its also important to note that this region is a crucial area in that endeavor, so even beyond fundraising, directly talking to the voters is critical. Obama supporters should have a prescence at every public event this summer and next: County fairs, festivals, etc, etc, showing videos of his speeches and handing out flyers that give people a sense of what he is all about.

I just joined this group and I was thinking that we may want to change the group name from South Bend, IN for Obama to St. Joseph County, IN is for Obama or Northern Indiana for Obama. I think it would attract more people in other area cities and possibly other area counties to our group. Let me know what you guys think. Also let me know when our next meeting will be so that I can meet more like minded people!!
