Not too long ago I was forwarded another one of the those emails created by stodgy conservatives. This one contained a letter written by Mark Gregg to Mr Obama. Stodgy conservatives have been circulating it out on the internet via email and blogs for about a month now. I felt compelled to write back to Mr Gregg. Here is my letter.
Dear Mr Gregg,
One of the greatest things about this country is that we can have vastly different opinions and still be Americans. We can question our leaders, (apparently with the exception of vice presidential candidates), and hold them accountable. I respectfully disagree with your statements and here is why. I hope you will reconsider your vote.
1. Joe Biden was picked to improve the Obama team's foreign policy knowledge. Palin was picked to gain Hillary supporters. Which is a better reason? Of the four candidates, which is the least qualified and least capable of running the country? A thorough review of Palin's record of "maverickyness" may include some reform but it also includes abuse of power, and deception. Most have come to see a much different Palin than who she claims to be. She can call herself a maverick a thousand times but that does not mean she actually is. Change does not mean bringing in an outsider. Change means taking a different course of action when the course you are on is not working. The company I work for follows this process: Plan, Execute, Measure, Correct. Republican leadership has Planned, and Executed. The American public has Measured and now it is time to Correct.
2. The single most conservative presidential administration has the single worst approval rating. Perhaps a liberal leaning administration is the right course of action right now. Quite frankly I get angry when I hear claims the Obama's are angry. Obama does not come off like an "angry black man" though many stodgy conservatives really want others to think so. Angry people do not give up high paying jobs to become community organizers. Have you actually noticed the difference between Obama and McCain when it comes to anger? Have you noticed the difference at Obama and McCain rallies and debates? Angry people appear angry and say angry and hateful things. Obama appears calm cool and collected. Have you noticed the difference between Michelle, who gives positive interviews and Cindy who does nothing but complain? Michelle Obama will make a great First Lady. Mr Gregg, with all due respect, your measurement for anger needs some improvement.
3. How many times will conservatives use the tax argument? Obama's tax plan is clear. Read it Mr Gregg instead of misrepresenting it. I ask that as you complain about taxes keep in mind that spending for the military, bridge and road construction, firefighters, police, schools, and fixing the broken Bush economy are paid for by taxes. Nobody likes taxes. But we do need them in order for this country to work. A balanced budget has happened recently...while Clinton was president.
4. Obama's response "Above my pay grade" was him indicating that in his view a higher power, most likely god, should decide the question of "where life begins". Not everyone believes life begins at conception. To compare his answer against a real presidential decision is like comparing apples and oranges. In a presidential decision if we should attack a country based on lies and deception Obama has shown he will make the right choice.
5. More can be accomplished in the long term, with significantly less cost to taxpayers, using negotiation instead of military force. That does not mean military action is off the table, it means use it offensively as a last resort and use it defensively when needed.
6. I'm not sure about the Democratic party's stance on Tylenol. It does not appear to be a major issue in this campaign so far. Rape, incest, parental abuse all factor into parental consent. Individual situations vary. Once you can guarantee there is no child abuse and that fathers will never have sex with their daughters I am certain views on parental consent will change. It is not black and white.
7. Hate and fear mongering stodgy conservatives that are trying to divide our great country are "poor examples of human existence." You can dislike Matt Damon and I can dislike Rush Limbaugh. This is America!
Thank you Mr Gregg, as I was reading your letter and in turn writing my response and thinking through the issues I now more than ever see why we need to elect Obama. Another 4 years anywhere close to the last 8 scares me.
Respectfully,
...clint
