What is Bush's Last Day Gear? One day in 2006 while walking to work through the Irvington neighborhood in Portland I ran across an interesting bumper sticker on a minivan. The bumper sticker said “01.20.09 Bush's Last Day”. It seemed so far away. When I arrived at work I looked up the website just to see. Instantly I found an entire suite of merchandise that I liked – bumper stickers, shirts, hats, mouse pads, magnets...you name it. Over the last few years I may have become a 01.20.09 junkie. The first item I purchased was a countdown key chain that had nearly 900 days left when it arrived. Today it reads 100! I particularly enjoy wearing a shirt that has the date and nothing else. It often prompts the question “What's the date for?” followed by a discussion. I usually make people guess something before I tell 'em. Everyone reacts positively. I love Portland!
At the time I made the statement back in February, I really believed no candidate could be worse than pitiful Bush. Bush and his stodgy followers have driven this country into the ground. We are in an unpopular war originally justified by lies and deception. After most of the world stood by the U.S. during our 9/11 crisis Bush has managed to piss away all the goodwill. He has taken giant steps backwards preferring only a religious view over solid scientific reasoning. Of course the cherry and whip cream on the hot fudge sundae is his miserable economic failure of which now we are seeing the verdict. With one of the lowest approval ratings ever, how could anyone be worse?
Up until recently I didn't think it was possible, but McCain just might be that someone. With his horrible VP pick, the negativity at his republican convention, his miserable handling of the economic crisis, and now the latest round of attack campaigning McCain has shown his true colors. He doesn't offer any real solutions and simply falls in line with the stodgy thinking that has gotten us in this mess. I now believe McCain could possibly be even worse than George W Bush. Who'd a thought it possible?
I have been looking forward to 01.20.09 for almost 4 years now. Most of that time I've been thinking about how I'm going to celebrate. Take a vacation? Go to a nice restaurant? Open an expensive bottle of sparkling wine? I think hosting a big party seems the most appropriate. Don't let me down America! If by some completely unexplainable way McCain happens to win this election there will be nothing to celebrate on 01.20.09. Let's celebrate Bush's Last Day not dread it!
