Hillary supporters
I think it may have finally happened. A majority of the remaining Hillary supporters have accepted Barack Obama as the Democratic candidate and more importantly the best candidate between him and McCain. I applaud those of you who have been going through the difficult summer months as Hillary supporters.
I have to admit, as a long time Obama supporter, I would have been devastated had another candidate surfaced as the victor in June. My initial response would have been to not vote at all or vote for the republican just to spite those who didn't pick my candidate. With such a long race and such a close finish, I understand the feelings. But I also know those feelings would have subsided and I would have backed the eventual victor, if for no other reason, than to ensure we did not have 4 more years of the miserable republican leadership we have experienced over the last 8.
There is a time when it is appropriate to move on. Last week that time came. Hillary will not be the candidate. Hillary supporters were able to get a good look at the candidate that will be running for president. He is a great candidate and shares many of the same values as Hillary. For those who supported Hillary just because she is a woman and for no other reason, I suppose you have a decision to make. For those who supported her because of her stance on important issues, I hope you discovered last week that she will be able to continue her work only if Obama is elected not McCain.
While watching CNN coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday they interviewed a strong Hillary supporter after her speech. In tears this delegate was having a difficult time understanding why Hillary was not the candidate. As an avid proponent of voting – one who continually convinces her friends and family to exercise their right to vote – she claimed she may not vote at all if Hillary was not on the ballot. I didn't see CNN interview her again, though I think they tried. I hope after Obama's speech Thursday she has had a change of heart. This country needs her and others like her to go out and vote for Obama on election day. I think she will.
