I haven't engaged in debunking Obama emails, but this one insulted my candidate and my Christianity so I wanted to take action lest others receive it and think less of Obama OR my religion. This message claims that "Revelations 13" has predictions in it that point to Obama being the anti-Christ. It claims to describe the anti-Christ as being "a man, in his 40's, of muslim descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language and have a massive Christ-like appeal" It claims he "will promise false hope and world peace." It then urges people to send around the email.
Checking with my NIV study bible, I find almost everything about that is wrong from a biblical standpoint. Here are the glaring un-truths...
1) There is no reference to the Beast's age, ethnicity, or religion in that passage
2) Muslims are not mentioned (The Muslim religion was formed after Christianity, so it would be really hard for that one to be true)
3) The Beast would not have Christ-like appeal as he is referred to as having the whole world following him saying "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?" Jesus never had that kind of following during his lifetime that I can remember. He was followers were a minority and he was not powerful in any military sense.
4) Persuasive-ness is never explicitly mentioned..."Proud words and blasphemies",yes, but it not persuasive language
5) False hope and world peace are not mentioned
6) Lastly, I'll note my pet peeve that this person doesn't know that Revelation does not have an "s" in it. But that might be picky....
I was particularly insulted by this email because it simultaneously gives Christians a bad name while assuming that Christians are too dumb to read their own text. I can't quote Revelation off-hand, but I am literate and interested enough to look up things that concern the book of my faith. Instead of urging people to forward this message to spread racist commentary, a real Christian should be urging people to read their bibles. So...pick up a bible or call up an internet bible to check it out for yourself. Then, feel free to forward THIS around. Or better yet, write a letter to the editor about it.
