CARBONDALE - A longtime Southern Illinois University Carbondale employee has been chosen to help lead the creation of a national educational curriculum through the federal Library of Congress.
Teaching with Primary Sources, an SIUC organization led by director Jerry Hostetler, has spent five years educating future and current teachers on how to use the library's digital service databases and use its services.
Other similar programs exist across the country, but they are "pretty much limited to the states that house them," said Hostetler, who has been selected to serve on the Library of Congress's National Curriculum Review Panel.
"It's pretty amazing how many teachers have never heard of the Library of Congress Web site and the vast amounts of information and services available out there," he said.
The panel aims to create an easy-to-use curriculum model that schools would be able to adopt and use to teach their own staffs, Hostetler said.
Hostetler's appointment to the panel drew praise from Illinois' federal legislators, as Congressman Jerry Costello, D-Belleville, and Sens. Barack Obama and Dick Durbin applauded the appointment in a joint statement.
"This is an important committee and Professor Hostetler's appointment speaks not only to his accomplishments but the academic reputation of SIUC," Costello said in the statement.
