Continuing his trip through Ohio, Barack held a town hall meeting at Westerville Central High School this afternoon, where he answered questions about issues such as health care, education, and foreign policy. So many people showed up to hear Barack that two overflow rooms were needed to hold everyone! One person asked how Barack would take care of our veterans. Barack said:
[Taking care of our veterans] is a sacred trust, a solemn obligation that we have failed to meet over the past several years. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a signature injury of this war. We don't screen adequately, and when we do screen, we're not giving people the mental health services that they need. ...When I'm President, we are going to screen every single member of the military who is discharged. We are going to provide all of them the mental health services that they deserve. The GI bill is inadequate. I will significantly increase the GI benefits that go to our veterans.
Another person asked how Barack would determine who would work for him in the White House and who he would appoint to the Supreme Court. He said:
I will appoint people of integrity. I want independents. I want people who will say no to me. I want somebody who is willing to stand up for principles...With respect to the Supreme Court, the role of the court is to look out for the people who don't have political power or a lot of money. ...I don't want to overpromise. It's going to take work, and it's going to take time. I will always tell you what I think, I will always tell you where I stand. It's going to take hard work and sacrifice to take us out of the hole that George Bush has gotten us into. I believe that Republicans want to have a better America...I will carry your voices with me when I am President of the United States.
