I have to tell you ... this is not the right tack:
Link
There's a lag in understanding that it is boys and men being shorted in education now, not girls/women. 10 years from now everyone will know it, but the time to deal with it is now. Obama could get MUCH play and differentiation from Hillary Clinton by understanding and illucidating the boy problems in the USA.
I'm a man. I do not see any outrage over the imbalance in favor of girls - via virtually exclusive female teachers - in K-8. Or any outrage over the small percentage of males in nursing and many other fields.
I have 3 daughters. And I know they are unfairly favored in school. One brought home extra credit not long ago for "decorating my notebook."

Hi David,
I respectfully disagree. While it's true that there's a shortage of male nurses and that needs to change, it tends to be more of a product of boys being told that nursing is a "sissy" or not a manly job, like a doctor. In contrast, there's also a huge shortage of women in high-tech jobs (my own profession); however, this is mainly a product of telling girls that "math is hard" for them, that they can't do it and shouldn't try.
Both stigmas need to change; however, the stigma against girls has longer-term ramifications with regard to the (very real) salary gap and the fact that only 3% of those in the highest corporate positions (CEO, etc.) are women.
I personally felt no gender gap either way in my elementary or secondary schools; boys and girls equally did well in math, science and the arts. But then I went to college and found myself only one of 3 girls in Computer Science, girls who were regularly harassed, excluded, and/or marginalized due to our gender. For someone who grew up with no gender bias whatsoever, it was a jarring experience, and one that almost caused me to quit computer science out of frustration. Luckily my gender-neutral upbringing and confidence in my own abilities helped me make it through, and I harbor no bitterness towards men in general because of my experience -- although I do find myself leery of self-proclaimed "alpha-geeks" who claim superiority in technology over folks like me who don't fit the stereotype.
No offense meant to you David, I just wanted to offer a differing and personal perspective on this.
Thanks,
Trish

Over 60% of college enrollments now are female, and the gap in engineering and math, etc. have largely closed, in fact today more girls are enrolled in advanced math and science courses than boys in the nation's high schools.
Again - where is the outrage over the even more paltry percentage of men in K-8 teaching?
Recent studies have shown that women make the same as men when conditions are the same. CEO's? They are generally work-a-holics who devote every fiber to the business. Women heavily tend to choose more personal time in their scheduling. However men who report this same choice, and increasing number, report being denied promotions and higher paying positions as well.
Recent studies also show that amongst part-time workers - women make more money. This is true for many fields where the schedules and sometimes risks are actually equal.
You go into schools today you will see posters and government programs designed to get girls into technical fields. Fine. But you will not see the same posters and programs designed to get boys into K-8 education, nursing, marketing, etc. which are woman dominated.
There's always a lag --- we didn't see the mortgage problem until it hit, but it started 12-15 years ago. The lack of males in higher ed will hit about 15 year from now - very hard. But it is occuring now.

The outrage with the low number of men in teaching positions, K-8, is not that they are not being recruited to teach -- but that the salaries are too low, and very few want to accept them! I can assure you that in the past whenever any occupation seemed to be "traditionally female" (teachers, nurses) the salary range did not grow commensurate with the "traditionally male" jobs.
You may want to get onboard in some of the recruiting circles, since male teachers are definitely needed. Sometimes the male teacher is the only male some of the students interact with, so that's another plus. Just a thought.

Thing of the past, in my research. Teachers are in the solid middle of any regional economy now. Teachers with experience now can expect to be in the 50's, 60's, and start in the high 30's ... that is nationally solidly above median. I don't want to get into this argumentively, but the salary issue has changed much, and teachers unions need to stop using it as a lobbying chip. And it must be recognized ... teaching is a government job. There is a point wherein jobs that invite risk of layoff, lack of stability, travel, heavy time pressures ... anure pay due to those factors.
I had a boy in my city express an interest in teaching kindergarten and overheard him discouraged that that might be a tough route because "districts can't take the chance of sexual predation."
Outraged, absolutely outraged, I stepped in and took the advisor to task.
This psychological assault plays far more in boys not majoring or entering K-8 education than pay scales.

David,
I hear your point. My hope and aspiration for this country is that individuals are taken at face value for who they are regardless of race, gender, or creed. We're not completely there yet but we are getting there.
In the meantime, I don't disparage any of my male counterparts that I work with and know that boys too have their set of obstacles in this culture; as an example, boys are not encouraged to discuss their feelings which can lead to difficulty in school and work.
In closing, let me add that historically many healthcare studies inadvertently focused on men (i.e., heart attack). We have since learned that women suffer from heart attacks in different ways than men but this came up only recently. We didn't realize the inadvertent bias in the research. As we focus on the differences and similarities, we will be better able to serve the needs of BOTH Men and Women equally.

Then let's hear this from a campaigner ... let's balance the presentation of the Grey's Anatomy actress, which makes it sound like 1958 again. It isn't.
That's my point ... there was no equity in that presentation.
Boys are in big, big trouble and not because they are inherently bad. Culture, unconsciouslyl or consciously, has set its sites on them for a generation now. Particularly in cities like Philadelphia.
Someday a politician is going to realize this and will benefit greatly from dealing with today's, not yesteday's dynamics.

I just ask that you continue to be engaged and make your voice heard in this campaign and Party on these Gender Issues.
Please don't walk away; we can and will respectfully, and with civility discuss these issues.
It's just like the healthcare research that I pointed to. As we discuss and learn more, we can develop initiatives and policies that work for both Genders equally. But we have to discuss and learn more. That's all.
Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the conversation.

David,
I also wish to respectfully disagree. Primary and middle school teachers and nurses have a much lower salary than doctors, lawyers, College teachers. In all jobs that have a 100000+ salary, men prevail, including young men of 30 years of age. I'm a university professor at an ivy league College, and although the number of male and female undergrads is roughly comparable, in subjects degrees of which lead to high paying jobs, male students dominate. Moreover, when it comes to graduate students, the number of male students for degrees that lead to high paying jobs, is vastly higher than that of women. When we move to tenured professors like myself, women don't even make up a quarter of professors, and a look at recent statistics shows that this is unlikely to change anytime soon, in fact, from graduate level onwards the percentage of women has been going down over the last five years.

Shouldn't nurses be paid less than doctors? I mean, certainly male nurses should be paid less than female doctors, and they are. Frankly - isn't one of our health care challenges that the whole system may well be overpaid?
You could also say for balance that nurses make more than firemen, and they do.
I'm a big "living wage" supporter. I'm less about "equal" which is a moving target, and about "enough."
Lawyers --- well, I won't go there, either gender. Suffice to say this is part and parcel of the "service" economy that, in my view, needs to change and has hurt us all.
I am also in higher education. Frankly - we all have good, secure jobs with great working conditions and comfortable pay. Whatever disparity there is I see it steadily shrinking. As far as teaching --- jobs that are heavily attached to research do make more. It will always be tougher to find good physics professor wtih groundbreaking publications than in, say, communications. But again --- when the schedule and load is really even -- research disproves a disparity, in fact often there is one in reverse as it is harder to find female engineers - today. That will not be true 15 years from now.

I am a mother of sons, and I totally agree that boys have been horribly marginalised over the last 20 years. Here in England, this is finally, belatedly being addressed with various initiatives.
There is a shocking imbalance and a shocking prejudice against males.
I'm 54 years old, so I remember when it was the other way round, but both sides of the Atlantic have gone WAY too far in the opposite direction.
This has a very detrimental effect on society.

David, I understand your frustration! If I must categorize myself, I am a woman currently enrolled in graduate school (though I guarantee I did not get extra credit for "decorating" any my senior thesis!). I think this frustration is coming from the exclusive focus on "Women" as a category in itself--in opposition to "Men" (or in turn, "girls" in opposition to "boys"). I agree that there is TOO much focus on women as a category itself --the impression is that the category needs to be "tended to" "attended" "assisted" "encouraged" to attain some level of equality (either of material-economic or of professional-opportunity). While it IS true that, as your other responders note, there is a continuing discrepancy between genders in terms of salary, perceived "capability," etc., like you, I agree that focusing merely on the DIFFERENCE and "women" as a group, defeats the intention to provide true equality--an acknowledgment of unity and purpose and ability. However, the more useful option would NOT be to merely compensate with an increased focus on "boys" or "men" as categories, and the way those categories are being neglected in favor of the other in some areas. Instead, it would be to transcend the impulse to CATEGORY itself. Because retaining any level of separation--even linguistic--ensures that any sense of "equality" attained is a false equality not promoting UNITY but retaining that inherent separation. So the whole kit-and-kaboodle should be reconceptualized with a reflexivity toward the ways labels and categories such as "Women" and "Men" are being used in any given situation. The goal is unity, right? So how do we unify people while recognizing gender difference and strive for an equality that does not emphasize the difference, but emphasizes the unified effort?
Cheers!

The problem there is there are developmental differences. K-8 Classrooms are now heavily stilted to favor girls' learning styles and even at an 18-24 month lag - sit still, be verbal, etc.
We can't pretend androgyny, it doesn't exist. Just like, as above, you can't treat male and female medical symptoms the same.
Boys are 5 TIMES more likely to be diagnized with ADD .... staggering. We're putting them in a demoralizing circumstance where they are at a disadvantage out of the starting blocks.
Wherever the equal point is, we're past it and a correction is needed or we'll be in a mess in 15 years on a lot of levels. Actually we're seeing it already in a rising generation of aimless, unfocused, marginalized and too often dangerous boys, especially in the cities.
Again, the excellent article linked is here:

At the end of the day, I'm saying it is a campaign issue coming --- if not this election cycle, the next, or the next ....

There are discrepencies both ways.
I'm a man. I think I'm pretty open minded, if not I would not have voted for Obama.
But I'll tell you --- if I hear one more sermon as to why women managers are more "nurturing" I'll hurl.
I've worked with incredibly nurturing men. And women that were bullies. And certainly visa-versa. There are different kinds of "nurturing." I'd say the, mostly men, that repair our power during storms, or pave the streets, or remove asbestos in renovations --- are pretty nurturing.
I've always said, the person that keeps your sewage clean has more to do with your day to day health than your personal physician.
So pay him or her.
I'm more about "enough" i.e. a living wage than "equal" since that is very difficult to quantify. I know too manh people that may have the same Bureau of Labor category that do not really do the same job or have the schedule or pressure, etc. - on both sides of gender. Again, even the Bureau of Stats confirms women in the part-time workforce make more than men in the same -- quite likely a prejudicial reversal, i.e., he's a "failure" for making that choice and she's not.

I don't know if it's because I lost my Mother also to cancer years ago and I still miss her so much and wish I had her for her counsel in tough times. I think though that it is because of Barack's genuine love for his mom and his ability to speak so lovingly about her that does it to me. Every time.

I think sometimes that had I known she would not survive her illness, I might have written a different book - less a meditation on the absent parent, more a celebration of the one who was the single constant in my life. In my daughters I see her everyday, her joy, her capacity to wonder. I won't try to describe how deeply I mourn her passing still. I know that she was the kindest, most generous spirit I have ever known, and that what is best in me I owe to her.

It's funny but I think about Barck's mother all the time ever since Iowa. I keep thinking how proud she would be to see where her son ended up. I have absolutely no doubt that in some way, somehow, our loved ones who have left this world can in some ways connect to us and guide us and that they "see" what we are doing.
I am glad to hear that he still looks to her for guidance. i can only imagine how much he needs her right now and how much he misses her.
For me, two of the dearest, most creative women I know were taken by ovarian cancer. It really makes me so angry when beautiful, intelligent, creative and loving women like that are taken away at a young age. I too got a lump in my throat seeing that video. Thanks for sharing.

WOO HOO!!
If you are feeling frustrated at the goings on in TX, DONATE!
I just set up my fundraising page, and I owe thanks to Tracy for getting me started towards my goal of $500.
I am a HUGE Minnesota Gopher Hockey fan! They start their run in the NCAA Tournament today against Boston College. If any of the MA hockey nuts out there want to place a "bet", I am willing to donate $100 to their page if BC wins. However, if MN wins they need to donate $100 to mine. Any takers?
Of course, anyone can donate to the GOPHER IT page at any time to help BHO win PA. No amount considered too small or too large. Thanks, and GO GOPHERS!

Check this out from the field(Al Giordano):
______________________________ _____________________
San Augustine County: Clinton 53 percent, Obama 35
Moore County: Clinton 64 percent, Obama 43
Edwards County: Clinton 55 percent, Obama 41
So, Clinton won those counties in the primary by 18, 21 and 14 point landslides respectively, but still lost the overall delegate battle in today’s county caucuses. If that trend continues statewide, put on your seatbelts for another game-changing moment.
Again, those are just three caucus conventions out of 284 statewide, but from three distinct regions, each of which Obama lost in the primary, but where he appears to be winning today.

Thanks Mike! Just getting back to the site. I've been somewhat anxious most of the day, wondering how the BHO camp was handling the "problems" down there. I called HQ and TX HQ Hotline this morning and was assured that the problems the TX dels. reported yesterday were being addressed by plenty of BHO lawyers "on the ground".

two things about todays townhall in johnstown.
FWIW, i am voting obama without any doubts.
First question was about verizon transfering call center jobs overseas. His answer could have been better imho. I think he should acknowledge that it just seems wrong to have these jobs overseas and not here, but THEN explain about a global economy.
Secondly, he said " punishing with a baby" and I just felt especially with the PA he should have said punishing with pregnancy. It may not be a big deal, but im sure the real folks on here know what I mean. I know what obama meant and it was fine, but it just sounded harsh considering the extreme passions about the baby/fetus abortion debate ( im pro choice fwiw, but dont like abortions as most folks dont, but agree with obama its the womans choice)
Now, I hardly ever write critical posts, but maybe somebody will see this and understand my good intentions to help obama.

Your concerns are noted but sometimes candidates are tired and if they are to remain honest, words come out that may have been better put or not a canned answer
People not supporting Obama based on pro-choice should not be supporting Hillary either - except if they are using double-standard.
For instance, based on the way the lady in asked the abortion question, she was screaming to Obama as though he himself had performed one. I kind of thought that this is one person using the event to express her opnion and may be hard to change it

Those are the big tax credits that Obama talks about, they get them because of the Bush and GOP doctrin. And the jobs going over sea's is well, are candidates husbands doing, which she by the way supported.
Here is something that some may not be aware of the Government use to do this and I believe they still do, the power, telephone, and rail road get money from the government to bring power and phone and railroads to parts of the country that don't have it. It was started a long time ago and I believe it is still done now. I have driven many times accross this country and can tell you that these services are every where and this money giving to the Utilities for expansion should stop.

We are strong in numbers. She keeps saying she is transperant but she hasn't proved it yet. This I believe could be her big down fall. She is only bying time!

Hello Fellow Obamaites,
Just got back from a morning of voter registrations here in NC. From my neighborhood it appears 90%+ are registered already and predominantly going for Barack. Ran into one Ron Paul who I tried to turn (I think I succeeded with the fact that Obama is a Constitutional Law professor) and one McCain supporter who was a walking representation of Fox news. See hates Rev.Wright because she thinks he hates white people but the whole time she spewed her opinions of Hispanics and Asians. I think I have about a 10% chance of getting her to Obama :)I swayed one voter from Hillary to Obama and bolstered the will of a waivering Obama supporter.
Anyway,it was a good day. It's too cold and wet out to keep going.

Hi all, today my daughter turns 18! She is registered and ready to cast the first vote of her life to Barack Obama! Her birthday wish is that you do the same (no not really, that's her mother's birthday wish, although she really is going to vote for him).
Anyway, her true birthday wish, and I see that Lawrence has mentioned this on other threads, is that for us all to turn off the lights at 8:00 tonight in support of the Earth.
I'm quoting from the Google site (Google is almost as cool as Obama): "On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation."
So please help my wonderful daughter, Averyl, have her wish come true and turn off the lights (and make a wish yourself).
And if you want to give $18.00 in honor of her, that would be cool too.

Clinton Caucus Disruption/Vote Suppression
The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Clinton campaign training materials regarding Tuesday night's caucuses ominously advise supporters to take control of caucus sign-in sheets and vote tallies especially "if our supporters are outnumbered."
[Clinton caucus training material] goes on to say, "If our supporters are outnumbered, ask the Temporary Chair if one of our supporters can serves as the Secretary, in the interest of fairness.
"The control of the sign-in sheets and the announcement of the delegates allotted to each candidate are the critical functions of the Chair and Secretary. This is why it is so important that Hillary supporters hold these positions."
Now there can be only one purpose in trying to control the tally of votes under circumstances in which a campaign knows it's outnumbered, that it will lose an honest counting of the votes: to alter the true vote. To cheat. To steal. To suppress the votes of Texas caucus attendees and subvert the caucus process.
The phrase, "if our supporters are outnumbered," means, in simpler language, "If we lose the vote, take control of the vote tally and change the numbers."
Place this alongside the Clinton campaign threats to challenge the Texas caucuses and you get a full picture of what Clinton is up to: disrupt the caucuses at all costs. Steal votes, delay the reporting of honest vote totals, throw the process into chaos, do whatever it takes.
UPDATE -- There are other reactions, and links to perspectives on the Nevada caucus controversies involving Clinton campaign shenanigans, at DailyKos and Politico.

I guess I am a little shocked at how ineffective our political system is at the moment. Many of these states have had broken processes for years and choose to just leave it as is.
Saw this comment on Burnt Orange...
"I've been here at Delmar Stadium since 7:30 and still haven't registered, as they seem to have changed the process midway through. I'd estimate there are about 3,000 people here, without knowing who's still outside. They are only now going to begin calling us by precinct to finish registration. With any luck, we'll be finished with this by Passover."

Obama will be there, not only among voters but also with his volunteer team. We have to cover all bases especially our enemy terrorities, let's not give in we have to fight the Hill in her own back yard.

Eunece, can you mention the fact that the Clintons own businesses in both Canada (CGSGI) and Mexico? This should open the eyes of PA voters who've lost jobs as a result of NAFTA and show them that she can't be trusted to change it as she says.
Don't the procedure, like if you need to clear this with HQ or what, but it's been on the internet forever. Thanks!

How do you know this about Indiana? I personally think that IN may be tough for Barack. I think he will do great in NW IN and in the Indy, lafayette, bloomington and Evansville areas, but I'm not so sure about those rural areas.
I used to live in Bloomington and there are quite a few racist areas south of Indy. I heard that the KKK even has a big HQ down there. That worries me so I would to know where you got your poll data from. I don't see anythiing yet on any websites.
bottom line- we have to work VERY hard in Indiana and also to maintain a large lead in NC.

Mar 29th 2008 at 3:14 pm EDT
I'm thinking we might be hearing that hrc's campaign is running low on campaing money again:
From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann and NBC's Chuck Todd
Check out this line from today's Bill Clinton-signed fundraising email for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign: "We're facing a big deadline on Monday. Our opponents and the media will scrutinize our fundraising reports and look for any sign of weakness. By making a contribution today, you can help make sure we show nothing but strength."
So after I read this I went to hrc's website and the bloggers there are talking about the "meter" is back up and running and they better act now because they are way behind in hitting 3 million. 3 million what do you think? Donations, dollars? Anyway, we may get news Monday that things are getting bad over there.

Not just money problems but illegal fundraising issues as well. I'm still waiting for the MSM to report the story of Kathy Callahan, former HRC campaign finance committee member! The story has been on the net for at least two weeks!!!!!!!
They were letting people exceed the max, K.C. reported it to higher ups, was told not to tell anyone, plus they made $3000 in unauthorized charges to her VISA!!! Didn't want to give it back! She consulted with a bank advisor who told her to report it to the police,)which she did in Ridgeville, Va), and to get the h-- out of Dodge!!!!!!
She quit and is now an Obama supporter! Oh, they ended up refunding her money except for the $400.00 over limit fees!!! That's Clintonian for you! But, not one word from the MSM!!!!!!

I am really upset about reports of hanky pank in Texas.
What has happened to morality in this country? We used to believe in the Golden Rule. Now it seems to be that the end justifies the means. Not only from the so-called religious right (which has the most amazing ability to be dishonest, and somehow call it Christian), but now right in our own party.
I have always been so impressed when I have voted about the efforts of those volunteering to keep everything honest. But obviously, that doesn't happen everywhere. I'm sick and tired of elections being stolen. We're supposed to be the beacon of democracy in this country. Florida the first time Bush was elected, Ohio the second time (more votes counted than there were registered voters), I even heard of Democrats registrations being thrown out in small towns in the northwest, in the last election, just thrown in the garbage can!
I think when cheating is discovered, those doing it should be severely fined, and the total vote in the precinct should go to the other candidate, rather than all these silly recounts. And everybody working for the election should be told this in no uncertain terms. It simply must not be tolerated.

Andrea - President Obama Supporter
Mar 29th 2008 at 3:17 pm EDT
Bill Clinton made a significant admission in Corpus Christi, Texas this month - saying he had decided to pardon Puerto Rican terrorists back in 1999 “based on the stuff I was given by the staff.”
But Ron Kolb, the citizen whose questioning prompted the ex-president’s comment, rightly pointed out that the FBI and Justice Department had opposed the pardons. The conclusion is that it was Clinton’s political staff who pushed for clemency - with the obvious goal of helping Hillary’s bid to become a New York senator.
Bill still denies that was his motive, of course - but no one believes it. The lobbying by Hispanic politicians from New York on the issue had been years-long; the culmination was noted by the New Republic noted back in ‘99: “Two days before the president announced the clemency deal, New York City Councilman Jose Rivera personally presented Hillary with a packet on clemency, including a letter asking her to ’speak to the president and ask him to consider granting executive clemency’ to the prisoners.”
The FALN, a terrorist group devoted to independence for Puerto Rico, bombed the Fraunces Tavern here in New York City in 1975, killing four and injuring 54 others.
It also:
* Bombed five other downtown New York buildings in 1974.
* Booby trapped a building in Manhattan and then called the police, seriously injuring and partially blinding an officer.
* Exploded two bombs in Chicago’s Loop in 1975.
* Bombed the Merchandise Mart in Chicago in 1977.
* Bombed a Mobil Oil office in New York, killing one person, in 1977.
* Bombed two Chicago military recruiting offices in 1979.
* Injured three police officers in New York bombings in 1982.
Even in those pre-9/11 days, pardoning terrorists who weren’t even remorseful drew public outrage; candidate Hillary soon wound up condemning Bill’s decision.
But when it comes to politics, they really are a team - Hillary’s administration would be staffed from the same pool that Bill drew upon.
The same team that freed hardened terrorists to win political markers for Hillary - the same team that’s now willing to tear the Democratic Party apart in its desperate bid to steal the nomination for Hillary - would once again be empowered to free the guilty and endanger the innocent, whenever it suited their political needs.
Why does Hillary think America will trust her enough to make her president?

Carl,
If you are able to travel to PA, the best thing to do is pick a city from the PA office list (Click PA on the States tab) and call them directly. This is the fastest way to get a response from the campaign. I know PA GOTV (Get out the vote) is going on in PA right now and I'm sure they could use your help.
This is how I got involved and will be traveling to PA in April as well.

Edwards praises both Clinton, Obama in first political speech
March 29, 2008 14:46 EDT
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (AP) -- Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says he has a high opinion of both Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
Edwards took the stage in a political speech Saturday for the first time since dropping his presidential bid in January.
He declined to endorse either of the Democratic candidates for president but said the nation would be blessed to have either in the White House.
Edwards appeared at the Young Democrats of North Carolina convention that included speeches from both Obama and Clinton supporters. Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, was scheduled to make an appearance later Saturday.
Edwards dropped his presidential campaign two months ago after winning 26 delegates through the first four contests.

I think the way forward here is for you to travel down to PA and talk to the PA campaign manager. I think it's the same chap from IOWA and he is a great strategist and very smart. From your post, you will have to be a paid staff to get do the kind of stuff you are proposing. Hello Carl,
Thank you for volunteering your talent.
One of the things you can do is to call the field director of Obama's Penn campaign or contact the Student's for Barack Obama in PA. Another way is to contact one of the local offices in Penn that are located where you feel your talents will be more useful
They will use your talents but sometimes they are overwhelmed.

He has also the ability to bring the Americans stronger economic possibilities for their future. The Americans have a big heart for injustice, they helped Germany after the second world war with nutrition and hope, hope for a better future (we are Germans in the forties). Now the Americans can get a president with this qualities and his name is Barack Obama.

I am a convert from Ron Paul to Obama.
I am in desperate need of clarification on this statement by Barrack Obama.
"The truth is that my foreign policy is actually a return to the traditional bipartisan realistic policy of George Bush's father, of John F. Kennedy, of, in some ways, Ronald Reagan, and it is George Bush that's been naive and it's people like John McCain and, unfortunately, some Democrats that have facilitated him acting in these naive ways that have caused us so much damage in our reputation around the world,"
I believe that if you do enough research you will realize that in fact this current war in Iraq is a continuation of Bush the first and the Iraq war is part of a long held right wing conservative ideal to re-create the middle east so it is safer for Western corporate interest and Israeli regional aspirations.
This started with Bush Sr. and I have know Idea what Obama means in these recent statements.

He's said this before. He's referring to (in the case of the 1st Iraq war and Bush 1) not going in unilaterally, and to having a specific goal in sight (getting Saddam out of Kuwait)--as opposed to Bush 2's rush to war, on two fronts no less, with no clear end in sight, and a minimal (at best) coalition of allies.

I think what he was trying to say is that foreign policy was an American policy not a corporate policy. This war on the other hand has been a business venture if you will for Bush and his buddies. With the first Iraq war .. there was a plan .. a beginning and end date with a budget (60billion?). I think if we elect Senator Obama the world might be willing to work with us again more or less like after 9-1-1 .. we have a chance to re-configure the state of world affairs.

The Iraq war is the brainchild of William Kristol and other neocons aligned with the "Project for a New American Century."
Link
"...On January 16, 1998, following perceived Iraqi unwillingness to co-operate with UN weapons inspections, members of the PNAC, including Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and Robert Zoellick drafted an open letter to President Bill Clinton, posted on its website, urging President Clinton to remove Saddam Hussein from power using U.S. diplomatic, political, and military power. The signers argue that Saddam would pose a threat to the United States, its Middle East allies, and oil resources in the region, if he succeeded in maintaining what they asserted was a stockpile of Weapons of Mass Destruction. They also state: "we can no longer depend on our partners in the Gulf War to continue to uphold the sanctions or to punish Saddam when he blocks or evades UN inspections" and "American policy cannot continue to be crippled by a misguided insistence on unanimity in the UN Security Council." They argue that an Iraq war would be justified by Hussein's defiance of UN "containment" policy and his persistent threat to U.S. interests.[7]..."
Bush Sr. elected to not go all the way to Baghdad to remove Saddam since he knew they would not be able to handle the aftermath and out of respect for the rule of law. The UN resolution was to get the Iraqis to leave Kuwait, not regime change.

I think he's referring to returning to a foreign policy which reverts to more diplomacy, i.e. JFK visiting Berlin ("ich ein Berliner"), even Reagan with Gorbachev ("tear down these walls"), etc. Also, Obama's referring to a return to a better working relationship with the U.N. and allies in general. This a broad interpretation of his overall foreign policy.

AND the reason that Casey Sr was not allowed on the platform at the 1992 National Convention HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH his stance on choice. It had to do with the fact that he wouldn't endorse THE NATIONAL TICKET. This is another Rovian Democratic talking point that has been repeated so many times we've all been sold it as if it was the fact.

Firstly, Barack is going to win. Secondly, if this nomination is decided by fat cats and Hillary is SELECTED, I will either write Obama's name on the ballot or I will not vote. I know what the Clintons stand for and my principles will not allow me to vote for her. I do not vote based on party, but rather on character and integrity. She brings neither of these. That's how I feel and I'm sticking to it. I will not be a hypocrite knowing how the Clintons are just to make sure that the Democrats win.

HRC states:
"This spirited, exciting contest is actually a real plus for us."
Where on earth does HRC get the notion that her uniquely visceral form of gutter politics (that makes Karl Rove look like Mother Teresa) is a "real plus" for the democrats? The only thing dumber than HRC's above observaton is BC's recent "saddle up" comment. HRC and her self indulgent tone deaf husband lost whatever common sense and political skills they had long ago.
Starting in NH, the HRC campaign has offered up a constant stream of race baiting and fear mongering, mixed with a bunch of cheap lies about BO's record - (the so called "kitchen sink" strategy) - that represents a vile and contemptible form of yesterday's politics.
HRC and BC - simply put - HAVE NO CLASS.
I can't think of anyone less qualified to be commander in chief than HRC. Her core demographic is old, relentlessly vaginal (at the expense of all else), and voting on fear. What a perfect storm of dead end politics.
The one thing that recommends BO - aside from his stand on certain issues - is his fundamental decency. It's been a long time that this country has had a politician with his kind of honesty and personal integrity.
It would be one thing if HRC and BC really felt that they had significant policy differences with BO, and if they used their time on the campaign trail to vet those differences. But that's not what's going on. Rather, they devote most of their time to the politics of personal destruction often veiled in clever subtext (the latter intended to offer plausible deniability). BC's Jesse Jackson comment is the classic example.
This is not political discourse; it's blood sport: Cheap, dirty, below the belt, old fashioned, dishonest, intellectually insulting, vicious - and just plain stupid.
Maybe HRC and her flatulent husband are having "fun," but those of us who would like to put an honest democrat in the White House - for the sake of country and planet - are having anything but fun.
HRC has become like nails on a blackboard. The only function she is now serving - since whatever honest debate she may have had with BO is long over - is opening the door to a McCain presidency.
My message to HRC/BC is this: either debate the issues - or shut the hell up.

I completely agree.
Even after Super Tuesday, there were rumors she was pressuring Pelosi and other DNC high-ups to get Obama drop out.
If she'd won 11 states in a row (well, then they would have "mattered"), the pressure for Obama to drop out would have been unbearable.
I agree that we need to let the remaining 10 states have their voices heard, otherwise, too many people would do 'revenge' voting to keep any Democrat out of the White House.

If she were pressured to drop out we would never hear the end of the whining or how she or her supporters were "robbed."
I think she needs to be left alone to sink on her own, not be pressured to drop out. Just ignore her and keep moving in positive direction and win so nothing can be thrown up that the finish was in any way tarnished (altho I think somehow, someway she will create some argument as to why she lost, because she could not possibly think it was her campaign that tanked).

Jacqueline,
Your are correct. My apologies.
I should have said: relentlessly driven by gender and nothing else.
Ironically, I would love to see a woman in the White House as chief executive. One of our problems in terms of foreign policy is way too much testosterone - which HRC, ironically, appears to have in abundance.
Obviously, gender cannot be ignored. But I get the impression that some are thinking solely in terms of gender. Given the stakes in today's world - given the problems both here and abroad - we simply do not have the luxury of single issue politics. Maybe another time and place - but not now. Barack's the classiest shot we have at bringing sanity to our foreign policy, clarity to those issues - like health care and the environment - that plague us at home, and civility and decency to our politics.
HRC has taken the debate into the gutter, and it disturbs the heck out of me. HRC had a golden opportunity to elevate her campaign because she was running against a thoroughbred. She took the wrong road, and it just keeps getting worse.
What a missed opportunity - makes me sad, dissapoints me in terms of the quality of our politics, and disgusts me. Sometimes I reach for ways to express that and it comes out wrong. I wish I had Barack's gift for language.
That said - no excuses.
Again, my apologies.

I'm over JE...and tired of trying to figure out what he's going to do! Unless he has some secret plan to endorse BHO if things get rocky, his endorsement "after the fact" won't mean anything. I wrote him at that email address on HRC's site where she was begging people to write him. Got an "out of office" msg, but left a msg/comment as to why he should endorse BHO (not demanding, but drew the similarities of their policies, etc). Now, I'm done with it!

The Republican attack machine can be thanked in part for Bill's ascension. There was a backlash to the massive negative onslaught, but Bill was IMHO the best of the worst that we had to choose from. We are blessed today to be able to freely choose the best of the best (present company excluded), Senator Barack Obama.
It's a curious situation that HRC, failing in her presidential bid, doesn't want or intend to return to serve her New York constituents in the Senate. It is clear then, that she chose to take that seat, not to contribute to our nation’s governance, but only to use it as a stepping stone to the presidency (her only burning desire?). Once again, deception!
And, once again, a startling contrast to our candidates motivations for seeking office and even perhaps his law degree. Frustrated by government bureaucracy un-responsive to layoffs and plant closings and the plight of average Americans in Chicago, Barack Obama chose to get to a position where he could affect change for the working poor. That was his reason for his state senate run and the move to the U.S. Senate, to have a greater impact.
Beyond the US Senate, the presidency beckoned because of the distortions that ideologues and partisan bickering had caused. The resulting gridlock has rendered our government inoperable except to big moneyed special interests. As the only politician willing to attack the problem of gridlock with a comprehensive plan to overcome it (the American people), who also has the ability to articulate the need as well as motivate us to engage this process, Barack Obama is not the second coming, just a Patriotic American making himself available to his country in it's time of need.
It's not about him, it's about us.
Go Barack!

Thanks to the generosity of many who donated their valuable frequent flyer miles, we sent 28 out-of-state volunteers to Texas and Ohio, and so far have another 21 going to Pennsylvania.
This means ***1,225,000 MILES*** have been donated to date!!!
DONORS: It takes 25,000 miles for a ticket. So – who’s got at least 25,000 on the same airline which they’d like to donate toward making sure Barack Obama is our next President?
Step right up — I’m getting requests almost daily from volunteers who want to help but can’t afford the airfare. Donate now, please, so we can get these people on the ground where they’re most needed. We have to work harder in PA!
VOLUNTEERS: If you want to spend a week or more in PA, but can’t afford to pay your own way, contact me and I’ll try to match you with an airline ticket.
Please call me at 714-536-6104 California time. (Don’t reply on the blogs; I probably won’t see your response.)

IF YOU GET ANY CALLS FROM SOME MAJOR POLLING ORGANIZATION (PEW, GALLUP, RESMUSSEN, CNN OPINION RESEARCH CORP, WSJ, ETC.) ASKING FOR YOUR OPINION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF AL GORE STEPPING IN TO UNITE THE PARTY, TELL THEM FLATLY: "NO, I BELIEVE BARACK OBAMA ALONE CAN UNITE OUR PARTY AND OUR COUNTRY!"
CLINTONISTAS... YES! CLINTONISTAS are floating the idea of calling in Al Gore to "save' the party from division because they don't want to see Barack take the nomiation that he deserves. They are using Fox, CNN, MSNBC and even some superdelegates to poison the atmosphere with that idea. Please, DO NOT BUY ONTO THAT.
I have even noticed that some of ours have been approached with the idea, and they are naively circulating it via emails and on their personal Obama blogs. Please, refrain from that.
Why are some of us losing faith in Barack, panicking and spreading fear among us, at a moment when we are winning clear and clean? What is all this story about Al Gore being needed to come and save us? We have no reason to fear! Barack will win the nomination and he will unite the party for the final victory...
