With improvements in technology now, you can do some jobs anywhere. We've got this global economy that we're now going to have to compete in. When I am President, I am going to be honest with the American people about the challenges we face. I don't want to make a promise that we're going to bring back every job that's been lost in Johnstown because we can't. What I can do is create an environment in which jobs are being created and we are growing our economy. We've got to have a first class education system in this country and in Johnstown. That means investing in early childhood education and closing the achievement gap. We're going to invest in our schools and pay teachers more. We've also got to focus on improving energy efficiency. We're going to invest $150 billion over 10 years into solar, wind, and biodiesel energy, and making cars more efficient -- all of this will create jobs. In addition, we will change our tax codes so that we stop providing tax breaks to companies who ship jobs overseas and provide tax incentives to companies who are investing in creating jobs here in the United States. They may be different jobs, but as long as they are well paying jobs that provide good benefits, we'll be okay and our economy will improve.
I've learned that the American people really do have so much in common, no matter where you go. You'd think that there would be huge differences between people in Mississippi and people in New Hampshire, but there aren't. All across the country, Americans have the same core values. They believe in hard work, believe that you should be able to find a job, believe in taking care of one another. We don't hear enough about why we're the same. There is a core American spirit that is the same.
