The Sacramento Bee announced its endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President for the February 5th California Primary. In a clearly worded statement released in yesterday's paper, the Bee Editorial Staff writes eloquently and simply about the advantage of putting a new face like Obama's, without all the baggage of years of partisan politics in the White House. They note that his experience working as a community organizer, civil rights attorney, and state legislator give him a familiarity with the real issues people face and how to solve those problems. And the Bee credits the Senator for opposing the Iraq War from the beginning and acknowledges that he would be best suited to bring the troops home in a timely manner. Read the rest here.
Other California newspapers have also recently endorsed Barack, including the Riverside Press - Enterprise (here), the San Francisco Bay Guardian (here), the Santa Barbara Independent (here), the San Diego City Beat (here), and the San Francisco Bay View National Black Newspaper (here).
And while we tend to stick to California news, we can't help but mention that the New York Observer has also endorsed Barack for president, writing, "Mr. Obama is the emblem of a new America. He has risen too quickly for his opponents’ taste; that fact is nothing less than a recommendation. His relationship to truth and plain speaking and public transparency is the first step toward reviving democracy in the United States of America." Read the rest here.
In case you missed it on January 15th, a coalition of California Latino leaders and elected officials announced their support for Barack. Some have been supporters of the Senator's for a long time, some were recent converts, and all spoke with hopeful words and sound reasoning. The coalition includes State Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero (D-24), State Senator Gilbert Cedillo (D-22), State Senator Dean Florez (D-16), former State Senator Martha Escutia, and Pomona Mayor Norma Torres. They cite Barack's his positions on issues affecting the Latino community, and his ability to bring people together and inspire the electorate. Check out the video here.
