Committee chairs Bill McCamley (Community Service--like food drives f/b/o Jardin de los Ninos); Evelyn Erhard (Education and Job Training); Gil Sorg (Energy, Environment, Infrastructure & Transportation); Bryan Chasko (Global Challenges); Meade Kemrer & Neil Holtzman (Universal Health Care); and Lloyd Covens, Eric Hilberg, Ernest Flores, Sharion Glazier, Francene Foster, Maria Flores and Judy Benson (who is maintaining a master email list of volunteers for mailings).
OBAMA CRUCES CONNECTION/ORGANIZING FOR AMERICA MEETING

Meeting was called to order and led by Lloyd Covens. An estimated 45 people attended the meeting and several more joined for lunch. (1400 S. Solano, LC, NM)
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Melinda Whitley—Chair of the Democratic Party of Dona Ana County. She announced that Diane Denish will be running for Governor of New Mexico in two years. She also announced that there will be the following meetings: Saturday, Apr. 4th at 9:45am—a district meeting where District Officers will be elected; and there will be a pre-meeting of the Precincts where Precinct Officers will be elected(March 19); there will be a Training Meeting on March 4th that will be held at the Dona Ana County Democratic Headquarters. On Saturday evening, April 4th, there will be a Dennis Chavez Meeting of the membership.
Rich & Joanne Ferrary discussed their visit to the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. last month. They also related many of their experiences sent to their blog which was published on the Las Cruces Sun-News web site.
Lloyd Covens announced that 780 pounds of food and $410 in cash donations were received for El Caldito on Jan. 19 National Day of Service. He also announced that there is a meeting planned for Thursday, April 30th, a breakfast at Roberto’s where they hope to collect as much or more food and money donations. The long range goal is to collect enough food for at least 1000 meals/month. Bill McCamley added, "It's about us all standing up and doing our part. It's about us all helping those less fortunate in our community."
The following Issues Groups leaders then spoke on their groups:
Education and Job Training (Blue Team)—Evelyn Erhard, Chair—(524-0803) focuses on school education and wants to set up a rotating group of people to go to the Girls and Boys Club to help kids with homework on a regular basis. Their group will meet Tue., February 24th at 6p.m.
Energy, Environment, Infrastructure and Transportation (Green Team)—Gill Sorg, Chair— (644-0660) focusing currently on the economy, and states they are expecting a lot of bold changes. Their next meeting will be February 17th at 6p.m.
Global Challenges: Iraq, Afghanistan & the Middle East (Yellow Team)—Bryan Chasko, Chair—(805-2855) is currently focusing on Veterans' issues and legislation for the Peace Initiative. He states a website is being built by him: ObamaConnection.org. Their next meeting is scheduled for February 19th at 7pm.
Universal Healthcare, Children and the Poor (Red Team)—Meade Kemrer, Chair—(522-7614) is currently focusing on the Federal Healthcare Reform and the Health Security Act. There are two upcoming meetings: Friday, February 20th, and then Tuesday, March 3rd at 6:30p.m.
Jim Durkin and Francine Foster showed a portion of the DVD they produced as a Digital Scrapbook of pictures and videos from the campaign thru the inauguration. The DVD & CD are available for $10 each. Call Lloyd at 970-333-0976 for copies.
It was announced that we need people to sign up to take regular 3 hour shifts/week to keep the Democratic Headquarters open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week from 11a.m. to 7p.m. The shifts would be from 11-2, 1-4, and 4-7.
We finished with lunch together and people signing up with the individual chair people for whatever group(s) they wanted to be involved with.
At 12:50, Francine lead a Town Hall meeting on the Obama Economic Recovery Plan. A video from Virginia governor (and incoming DNC chair) Tim Kane was shown. A discussion on facets of the Stimulus bill began. Then, members wishing to videotape their economic and/or life stories were recorded to be sent to the Organizing for America lead group in Washington.
The next general meeting of OCC/OFA Cruces will be Sat., March 14th at 11am at the Dem. Hq.
