With the corn fields of Horsham, PA stretching off in the distance, Senator Hillary Clinton addressed a passionate crowd of supporters from Montgomery and Bucks Counties. Thanking those who came to the event, she discussed the critical importance of Pennsylvania, which she said would likely hold the key to the White House on November 4.
Looking at the issues facing middle class Pennsylvanians, while also reflecting on her own support for Barack Obama in this election, Hillary told the crowd that "this election is too important to sit on the sidelines of history." She encouraged voters to focus on issues such as the economy and jobs, and support policies that strengthen the middle class. "The middle class," she said, "is at our core as a nation," going on to add that when the middle class isn't strong, the United States isn't strong.
In a speech that drew sharp comparisons with the Republican ticket throughout, Hillary led the crowd in a boisterous chant of "Jobs, baby, jobs!" a strong and contrasting message with the "Drill, Baby, Drill" chats that have become a rallying cry at GOP campaign events. She stressed that job creation is the answer to the economic downturn, and that in this election, only Barack Obama offers the steady , grounded leadership capable of steering us out of the current economic crisis.
Hillary explained that as she travels the country, she is often asked "Who are you for?" A better question to ask, she said, is "Who is for you?" It is the question she asked herself before setting out to campaign for Barack Obama and Joe Biden and she left no doubt in her speech today how she answers it for herself. "Barack Obama and Joe Biden are for you," Hillary declared. Acknowledging that times are tough, Hillary argued that the American people are tougher than the times, and that the results of this election will shape an entire generation to come. Urging her supporters and all Pennsylvanians to vote for change in this election, she painted a picture of a re-emergent America, founded in a revitalized middle class and steadied by Senator Obama's leadership.
