Libertarians are conservatives that want to smoke dope and get laid. They also believe in this utopia where the only thing we pay taxes for is police, fire and a justice system. These folks think that people will only do what is in their best interest and markets will behave accordingly. We all know this to be a fantasy that will never be reality. Libertarians are even more conservative than repugs. You are correct about the bastardization Reagan committed. However, I still think conservatives are not self-actualized and social conservatives are even less so. It’s no accident that conservatives are overwhelmingly white and members of the ruling class. Social conservatives are also mostly white, lower to middle class. Both lack empathy for others. Conservatives have not changed one wit in the history of our country. Over and over again they retread this free-market and lower taxes idea and philosophy and it NEVER works.
Crazy you say? Nope. Here’s why. The appointment of Tom Daschle to Secretary of Health and Human Services for starters. Daschle has been a champion of universal health care for years with enough political chips to cash in from his House leadership days. He also has enough lobbying experience to stand up to the corporate establishment and negotiate a deal. We may not like the deal initially, it won’t go far enough, but it will be a good start. I think the goal will be to pretty much faze out insurance companies and for-profit hospitals. Waxman moving to the chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee in favor of the pro-business John Dingle is the second piece. This Committee is key in making sure the funding moves through. Waxman is a fighter and no-nonsense stalwart of the left. I think Obama realizes he needs to fix this problem and free up the economy to move again. Universal Health Care is not the cure-all but it is the biggest piece of the puzzle to get this country competitive again in the global market. My opinion is that we also need to reinstate our tariffs and engage in the same protectionism every other industrialized country does and has since humans started using currency. It is lunacy to think we can continue to sustain massive job losses to cheap labor over-seas and also continue to buy cheap goods or move money around in services. The only thing that builds wealth is manufacturing so the loan to the car companies has to be done. Keep one eye on Chicago with the factory sit-in, the first push-back in the class war from the middle class. People are pissed that the banks have done nothing but steal our money and then we have to pay for our own lay-offs?!!!! I feel the rumbling…
