The idea that Hillary supporters would vote for Sen. McCain just blows my mind! I am a Hillary supporter. I voted for her in the primary because I thought she'd be a great president. I still think she'd be a great president. At the beginning of the primaries I supported her because I felt I knew what she was about, and I had great confidence in her intellect, judgement, values and leadership. I still do.
I needed to be sold on Barack Obama, as I was far less familiar with him and his record. Of course, I recalled the tremendous speech he gave at the '04 convention, and remember thinking that this man could be president some day. However, I didn't know him.
Since it became clear that Sen. Obama would have the nomination, I started giving him more attention. I am sold. Sign me up as enthusiastically behind this man as our next president. Shamelessly enthusiastic.
I admit I cried real tears watching Hillary move to suspend the vote and nominate Sen. Obama by acclaimation. But, it was a mixture of disappointment and pride. As I mentioned, I am a Hillary supporter, and really wanted to see her as the first female president. I was proud of her grace, honor and dignity at that moment.
Now that I've got that off my chest, however, we have the general election for the leadership of this country - my country - coming up fast. The choice couldnt' be more stark or more clear. How people can be undecided in this contest when the candidates are so wildly divergent in their views, plans and yes, abilities is utterly beyond me.
Not only does Barack Obama share most, if not all, of the policies and world views that I agreed with as a Hillary supporter, he brings so much more to the table than Sen. McCain.
to be continued....
