It might be a position the senate has to confirm....so Obama might just be able to appoint...
The good news is, Obama doesn't really even have 2/3rds of the Health and Human Services top people confirmed but is still able to deal with this...

100 days of Limbaugh's attacks on Obama
Given all the outrageous comments and attacks of the last 100 days, Media Matters had a hard time choosing the worst media moment and asked our readers to decide. The winner was Rush Limbaugh's comment, "We are being told that we have to hope he succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles ... because his father was black."
Indeed, Limbaugh has spent the first 100 days of Obama's presidency repeating and elaborating on his claim that he wants Obama to fail, as well as attacking Obama for being "angry" and accusing him of wanting to "destroy" the United States of America. A review of his falsehoods and attacks illustrates his commitment to personally leading the charge against anything and everything Obama does as president:
• Day 3: Setting a disturbing tone for the next four years of his attacks, Limbaugh says: "We are being told that we have to hope he succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles ... because his father was black."
• Day 7: Limbaugh says that getting the "truth" out about Obama is "gonna be an epic battle, as Saddam Hussein said. Saddam Hussein Obama said."
• Day 21: In an all-too-common moment of self-aggrandizement, Limbaugh declares of Obama's first few weeks in office: "I've crashed the honeymoon. ... I've hijacked it, in fact."
• Day 25: Limbaugh declares: "I want the stimulus package to fail. ... I want everything he's doing to fail."
• Day 29: Demonstrating his deep disdain for Democrats, Limbaugh says of calls for "bipartisanship" in fixing the economic crisis: "Should Jesus have made a deal with Satan?"
• Day 39: Limbaugh throws Republicans under the bus: "The dirty little secret ... is that every Republican in this country wants Obama to fail, but none of them have the guts to say so. I am willing to say it."
• Day 40: Limbaugh speaks at the CPAC conference in Washington, D.C., thrashing Obama and the Democrats in front of a fervent crowd. Limbaugh says: "How did the United States of America become the world's lone superpower, the world's economic engine, the most prosperous opportunity for an advanced lifestyle that humanity has ever known? How did this happen? And why, pray tell, does the president of the United States want to destroy it?"

The Constitution requires the president to submit nominations to the Senate for its advice and consent. Since the Supreme Court was established in 1789, presidents have submitted 158 nominations for the Court, including those for chief justice. Of this total, 122 were confirmed (7 declined to serve).

Yes...but all the justices picked over the last 20 years were on the federal appellate court...
The reason is because the first President Bush picked Souter thinking he was conservative then finding out he was liberal presidents don't want surprises....Someone who served on the federal appellate court votes on national issues (guns, abortion, civil rights, etc...) that aren't voted on in the state courts....that way the President knows their leanings...
Thing is, if he picks an academic (law professor, law school dean) they have a long publishing record, so it might be pretty clear where they lean based on that...
I like Kagan, who was Dean of Yale Law School...respect her but she is the solicitor general now...the Harvard Dean, Koh, works for the state department...Kagan has yet to try her first case...
Deval Patrick would be my next choice but he might want to stay as MA Governor...especially with the economy....guy is awesome...the conservatives will be afraid of him because not only is this guy black, but his daughter is gay, and they will be afraid he will push for gay marriage...
Over Obama's first term if he were to replace three justices they should be...
-Elena Kagan
-Deval Patrick
the third should be Harvard Law Dean Harold Koh, the first Asian justice...
the next possible appointment should be a latino woman to balance it off...
I doubt Jennifer Granholm is a candidate...she doesn't want to leave Michigan with all the problems the state has...Patrick even might not want to for similar reasons...
Kagan is really the safest choice....
I say pick Kagan now, then in 2 years when you replace next justice pick Deval Patrick, then next Koh, then for fourth one pick a Latino woman...
and then Supreme Court will have balance..
Any Governor he picks as first pick will be controversial based on whatever issues they supported as GOV, and because they would be a DEM governor...

May 2nd 2009 at 11:55 am EDT (Updated May 2nd 2009 at 11:55 am EDT)
• Day 58: Limbaugh claims that "everybody in the White House is in over their heads in fixing" the economic crisis and says those in the White House are "perfectly timed, perfectly programmed, perfectly educated to destroy capitalism ... and they're in the process of doing it."
• Day 64: Limbaugh says of Obama: "He's taking away freedom incrementally each and every day."
• Day 66: A poll claiming Americans think Obama will raise taxes yet still support him provides Limbaugh an opportunity to bash Obama and display some sexism: "They know he is lying through his teeth and they still support him. It just means this, what women have always known: 'Cheat on me, just don't tell me about it.' "
• Day 67: Limbaugh issues a pseudo-apology for saying that: "[W]hile my closing comment yesterday was certainly a comment containing a large element of truth, it still perhaps was inappropriate and so for that, I apologize." Yet, later in the show, Limbaugh returns to the rhetoric, saying of Obama: "He's a cult leader. Battered liberal syndrome. 'Cheat on me, just don't tell me.' "
• Day 70: Limbaugh says: "Based on what we've seen with General Motors and the banks, if he fails, America is saved. Barack Obama's policies and their failure is the only hope we've got to maintain the America of our founding."
• Day 80: Limbaugh uses the kidnapping of an American sea captain by Somali pirates to attack Obama and the Democrats: "Piracy is rebounding precisely because of the American left and the European left's lack of intestinal fortitude -- gonads, if you will." He later added: "The Democrat Party -- enemies of America are friends of the Democrat Party."
• Day 84: Following the rescue of the sea captain, and after previously bashing Obama for his handling of the situation, Limbaugh says he "was confident this was going to get settled. It was going to be resolved on way or the other way and regardless how, President Obama was going to be given credit for it."

May 2nd 2009 at 11:55 am EDT (Updated May 2nd 2009 at 11:55 am EDT)
• Day 85: Limbaugh predictably reacts to the leaking of a Department of Homeland Security report on "right-wing extremism" distorting the conclusions of the report, claiming Obama and DHS head Janet Napolitano are "extreme partisan radicals and they're ready to go war with a domestic enemy - conservatives - that they consider to be a greater threat than Iran, than China, than North Korea."
• Day 86: Limbaugh steers his listeners toward empathizing with right-wing extremists by falsely claiming that "Obama's DHS report" called "every mainstream conservative a right-wing extremist."
• Day 88: Limbaugh reacts to the Obama administration's release of previously classified Justice Department memos detailing interrogation techniques that were authorized to be used on detainees by claiming: "[I]f you look at what we are calling torture, you have to laugh." He went on to assert: "I just slapped myself. I'm torturing myself right now. That's torture according to these people."
• Day 91: In a comment emblematic of Limbaugh's frequent linking of Obama with Marxist and socialist leaders, Limbaugh asks: "Do you realize that Obama and [Venezuelan President Hugo] Chavez have more in common than they do not?"
• Day 100: Limbaugh gives Obama a "D" for his first 100 days, saying "We gotta allow room for more failure, cause it's gonna get worse."
There should be little doubt that for the next three years and nine months, Rush Limbaugh will continue his daily assault on President Obama. Limbaugh's attacks on President Bill Clinton in his first couple years in office were credited with helping Republicans take control of the House in 1994. If Obama does fail -- and the rest of America with him -- Limbaugh will deserve the credit he will be all too happy to accept

My wishes are that the people who are constantly bombarded with these messages from Limbaugh will see the light. I wish that they will see what Limbaugh is saying is not true and that Pres. Obama is even working for their best interests as well as the country. If that happened I would hope that the consequences would be that Limbaugh lost his audience and was taken off the air. I might add the above is a dream but I am a realist and know there are so many people that follow Limbaugh blindly and believe that crap. Just look at the rumors during the campaign that were believed even though they were completely debunked.

It's so funny that national polls (even one this week) show as high as 81% of Americans LIKE President Obama personally, even though they don't all agree with his policies.
Of course, we know too much about the other 19%.

They are making SO MUCH MONEY OFF HIM !!! Rush makes a HUGE salary, and his rating went up from all his crap so he probably got a raise! I heard Fox "news" is # 1 in cable news stations now, so those guys probably got a raise. If a repub was President they would be out of a job !!! Thank you, President Obama, for your calm and caring leadership, good advice and effective actions.
An extra thank you today for your good example of giving credit when it is due: You showed yourself to be gracious and well-informed when you gave bi-partisan credit to the last administration and congress for the usefulness of the preparations they made based on the avian flu of 2005. We can point to yet another example of your rational, informed civility when the next knee jerk negativist uses extremes, dramas, and untruths. So thanks for yet another good example!
On immunity - Given the age demographics of H1N1 so far, it looks like some of us old folk might have a bit of immunity from exposure to some earlier somewhat similar virus. And I bet if that turns out to be true, a lot of us are ready to help wherever we can.

I think we can add to the list the fact that the Republicans have taken our two-party system, destroyed it for lack of credibility, and now we have a one-party system. But, then again, when they were in charge, they did not participate in our Constitutionally-protected system of checks and balances anyway.

The long-awaited first meeting
By JOSH GERSTEIN | 05/02/09 9:45 AM
Come one, come all to the long-awaited first meeting of the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board. It will take place
May 20 at the White House and--believe it or not--the general public is invited, according to a notice to be published in the Federal Register next week.
"While the meeting room will accommodate a reasonable number of interested members of the public, space is limited," the notice advises.

Yes and Huffpo is saying that Ben Nelson is now railing against health care. We really need to replace him with an actual Democrat - I mean even the US Chamber of Commerce is pushing for healthcare reform. He doesn't care about his constituents and he doesn't care about the country so lets see what we can do to either pressure him into behaving like he cares or seeing to it that he loses in a primary to a Democrat that might consider representing the people. Can't believe Nebraska is standing still for this.

All the DEMS that voted for it are in very conservative states....states where a liberal Democrat couldn't hold that seat...
The exceptions are:
Carper (DE) but he has always been a conservative DEM..
Specter (PA) now a strong dem state, but Specter is probably now one of the 2-3 most conservative dems...he probably needs the money from these lobbyists to get re-elected...
Bennett (CO) This guy is in a tough position to get re-elected....he needs the money for his campaign in 2010 as he is unknown in Colorado picked to replace a Colorado Senator that went to Obama's cabinet..
Specter will get re-elected in 2010 but probably just serve 2 years of that term as he will be 81 by the start of his next term and has health problems...he will be replaced around 2012 with someone much more progressive...
Voters in CO will have an opportunity to pick someone more progressive then bennet...yet that person probably has to be pro-NRA to get elected there...
pretty much we need to gain 5 more dems in 2010, 3 progressives and 3 moderates would be great...
This vote just shows how uniformed the Americans are..they are upset over what happened with the economy but aren't following this vote....there should have been an uproar...

So no Republicans voted for the people?
What about Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins?
My prediction is that by 2012 Democratic Registrations will surge even more over Republican voter registrations, Obama's approval rating will be over 80%, and the majority of this country being "progresive democrats".....
These Senators like Evan Bayh will be forced to be more progressive, as will Specter....as will the Republicans that want to get re-elected...
We need to start getting PROGRESSIVE democrats re-elected, get the Republicans out, and let the moderate DEMS know if they don't become progressive they won't get re-elected...
My hope is that in 2010 we gain 3 progressive Dems and 3 moderate Dems...

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Three Republican leaders mentioned as possible presidential candidates in 2012 or beyond held a town hall-style meeting at a pizza restaurant to launch a series of listening sessions across America.
Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and rising star Rep. Eric Cantor (Va.) explained their vision for reviving the GOP to a mostly young crowd that packed into a pizza restaurant on Saturday morning.

Jeb Bush is MUCH smarter then his brother, but really has zero chance for the GOP nomination because of his name...
Both Jeb and George W. began as Governors in 1994, so some speculate on why Georg W. Bush ran and not Jeb...
To me it is pretty clear...George W. Bush has the exact same name as the last elected Republican President...
Romney will be the GOP nominee in 2012, but he has little chance of winning the General Election...
I think voters will see that he has the management/executive skills to be President, the intelligence, but that his far right policies would push our country off the cliff, the guy is cold, and cares only about the super rich...
The GOP if they are smart then need to let Independent Voters vote in all the primaries....otherwise the candidate will be elected by the far right and have not chance at getting voters in the middle...letting Independents vote is the smartest thing the DNC has done...
Eric Cantor is good at spinning information...almost as good as Bill O'Reilly...
Why Mitt Romney will be the GOP nominee in 2012...
1) He is the candidate of the party..the RNC voted him their candidate in Feb. 2009, Feb. 2008, and Feb. 2007.
2) The Republican Candidates enter the race in March of 2011. This is the same time the super rich will pay their higher tax bills after Obama repeals the Bush tax cuts..the super rich will be looking for someone to send their money to...It will be Mitt Romney, a former CEO, billionaire, and a guy whose tax policies make George W. Bush seem like a liberal...
3) Because he now has credibility as a conservative, he can run moderate on some issues and still get the conservative base...

Revenge of the Bushes,
These guys are trying to live up the the Bush legacy.
It's interesting to note that Jeb is emerging on the national stage so soon after W settled back in in TXS.
W was a colossal failure, my own instinct is that this is Jebs attempt to redeem W & to salvage the Bush legacy.
Jebs re-emergence seems at first an absurdity after the sordiness of the mess his brother left for all of us, however I'd caution that W was himself an attempt to redeem their father's loss to Clinton in '92.
Bottom line - never misunderestimate a Bush!

Thanks for the question Sreeizzle - I have not done all the math on this - I am working on it...
You are correct to suggest: we should really begin the process of growing our majority in 2010, and in the same process remove/weaken the likes of Ben Nelson & his ilk who are more beholden to special interests than they are to the people who elect them.
Critically and for 2010, if you listen to Cantor & Co we may not have the technology advantage that we enjoyed in 2008 as they plan to employ that same technology as well. We should, in my opinion, really ramp things up beginning now to ensure electoral center has shifted significantly to our side before the republicans regroup!!

Dean would be awesome but it's not really a great position...it is more honorary...you are not involved at all in setting health policy...
I thought Sanjay Gupta would be perfect, but I think the reason he didn't do it is because he has two young kids and it would hurt his career as a journalist....If he is surgeon general for 2-3 years then goes back to being a journalist people aren't going to think he is able to be objective about discussing the same policies he promoted the previous 2-3 years...
I want someone younger and media savvy like gupta, someone who can use the internet in a new way...
This wouldn't really help out Dean....Howard Deans goal right now should be to become a figure that transcends the Democratic Party...Right now he is seen as a far left partisan figure because being DNC head and all...
He needs to team up with a Republican like Chuck Hagel pick a major national issue and tour around the country...Dean was a Governor, Hagel a Senator, Dean has executive experience, Hagel experience in Washington, in foreign policy...Dean was a doctor, Hagel had four purple hearts in Vietnam... They both are bi-partisan and represent new politics...
Dean will get a lot more attention even if just because of the spectacle, with a DEM and REP together, and can reach a broader audience...
He is really preaching to the quire...people that support him already support universal healthcare and all these other things...
He needs to be on a panel....or just pair him with Republican Governor of California Arnold Schwartzenegger, and Independent Mayor of New York Mike Bloomberg...have those three people go around....that shows bi-partisanship in action...
Dean was a great DNC head for four years but is now just waisting his time....He isn't helping Obama going around talking about universal healthcare....nobody is really listening to him...
You dont talk about bi-partisanship...you form a coalition with someone from the other party...

Couple arrested for sex on lawn at Windsor Castle
LONDON - Queen Elizabeth II was at home at Windsor Castle, the sentries who guard her were on duty, and the large park surrounding the magnificent building was full of tourists on a Sunday afternoon. So it didn't take long for people to realize that something was out of order when an inebriated couple arrived from a nearby restaurant and began having sex on a grass bank outside the castle, according to witnesses.
"One window from the guardroom opened up and when a soldier saw what was going on he told his mates -- and lots of windows opened up," witness Mark Robinson told The Sun newspaper.
"The couple did not care who was looking and just kept going as if they were in their own bedroom."
Japanese tourists filmed the couple, who only stopped when police officers arrived on the scene, witnesses said.
Thames Valley Police said the man and woman were arrested and given a written warning about outraging public decency.
The queen was in the castle at the time, but her office declined Friday to comment about what had happened.
P.S. Japanese tourists do love to take their pics!!

Within the comment by our President was a repeated commitment to use our common sense and the best that legitimate science has to offer. The President promised to do this-- and so I voted for him.
How about recovery and reinvestment? What does economic science offer? What is common sense?
There are at least two approaches offered by a mixture of common sense and legitimate economics: One approach favors the rich-- do as little as possible and wait for markets and law-makers to bring about a rebound (provided revolution does not hit the streets); the second and better approach favors the poor and whole middle class-- do as much spending without taxes as possible, and be prepared to mop up unsaved excess money if spiraling inflation seems to be inevitable.
Our President has not studied Abba Lerner and his functional finance and proof that taxes are not for funding-- but are rather to prevent inflation. If the President demands his team explain how to spend on the scale of WWII to immediately lead the global economy out of danger, following Lerner's and WWII financing tools, he may do as well for economic science as he has done for the flu.

I read the article and it seems to me that Mitt Romney is planning to take Obama's message and tact of being outside WA DC and needing to change the status quo next time around. I may be wrong but do not think that simplistic view will work. I also noticed Jeb Bush said they need to listen a little bit and learn a few new things. I think the "little" is very telling since it projects that they think there is only a small change that is needed on their part.

"Nebraskans knew five years ago they had chosen an independent centrist when they sent Nelson to Washington. He deserves credit for sturdily filling that role in Washington's bitter partisan atmosphere." - Lincoln Journal Star, May 25, 2005
Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson has carved for himself a bipartisan role in a bitterly partisan Washington environment.
In a closely-divided Senate, Nelson's ability to cross party lines gives him an unusual amount of power and opportunity to impact major legislation.
Nelson has worked to forge compromises between the Bush Administration and the Senate on tax cuts, Medicare reform, and homeland security.

AZgrammy - Thanks; I sent him this e-mail:
Sen. Nelson - In January, you promised to help President Obama build consensus on passing legislation in an attempt to "stop the obstructionism." You have joined the party of No! I hope you know that Democrats around the country will be supporting your challenger in the next election, if you can't support our President. First you voted against the mortgage cramdown - and now health care and the public option? Are you kidding? We put President Obama in office to get help for the middle class. I notice Nebraska didn't have any trouble taking stimulus dollars. Support President Obama now, Senator. Or go back home and we'll elect somebody who can.

I have a different take on this.
We Democrats are EXPANDING our party. If we want to sustain that expansion, then we need to be more and more respectful of a wider range of viewpoints. With so many center-right voters leaving the Republican Party to join the Democratic Party, there is now a substantial wing of the our party that is represented by the Ben Nelsons and Arlen Specters. In fact, the bottom-line reason why Arlen Specter is now a Democrat is BECAUSE so many center-right PENNSYLVANIANS left the Republican Party and joined the Democratic Party!
I see this as a cause for celebration. Our party has a great leader and we are continuing to expand because our leader's message resonates so strongly with such a broad swath of the electorate. I am thrilled to have the left, the center-left, AND the center-right all in the Democratic Party. If the Republican Party wants to become the exclusive domain of the right, let them. I, for one, welcome the rest of the country into our party with open arms.

marti,
I agree.
We have a lot of flexibility on health care, but the public option is not on the table.
The public option is required for health care... anything short of that should be vetoed.
Barack would help the cause by making that clear now rather than waiting until they have dug in their positions.
We could help the cause by doing some serious fundraising. Perhaps a fund for democratic candidates that support the public option (to be used advertising on the topic against those who oppose the public option, such as a primary challenge for Nelson). I would like to see the DNC behind this effort as it could act as an extra whip for party members in Congress.
However, if the DNC doesn't deal with Nelson (and quickly) I think we have to do this on our own.
Nelson and others may not be interested in our opinions, but they will sure pay attention if we put a few million $ on unseating them in a primary challenge.

We can contribute in all kinds of ways, some with dollars - others with good old fashioned organizing and e-mail/letter writing/petition signing.
Many people don't have too many dollars to throw around (unless we're trying to get Barack Obama elected president, then we start selling things out of our garages to get the money to contribute - ha ha).

Tell Congress to Support Single-Payer Healthcare for Everyone in America!
You and your family could have guaranteed health care today, complete and comprehensive just as is available to families in other industrialized countries. Health coverage that won't bankrupt you if you get sick, discourage you from seeking preventive care because of high out-of-pocket costs, or put you at the mercy of insurance companies who will deny treatment you need because they don't want to pay for it. America's nurses see patients harmed and dying unnecessarily every hour of every day.

marit,
I think you would be preaching to the choir.
What we need to do is raise $ to give a dem challenger to Nelson a substantial financial advantage to overcome the incumbent advantage that Nelson enjoys (Senators enjoy a large advantage in that regard).
I feel the DNC should be organizing this (if we can't seem to get Nelson on board with the party platform). If the DNC doesn't want to support the effort then we will need to build our own organisation to do it.
We have time to raise money, but for it to be effective we need to get started very soon (and have a memory like an elephant).
Also, I think Nelson (and others) should be given a chance to change their position, but not obstruct in the process. Any face saving way Nelson changes his tune is fine with me, just so long as he changes his position to support health care reform.
After all, health care was one of the things we clearly voted on last November, it's not a change of plan here.
So I feel that in this case, writing and calling won't do it. We need to show we are more than a paper tiger, and one path is in raising $ to unseat those that oppose our platform within the party.

Lee

Lee - It's probably also important to start the letter-writing and petitions early, if for no other reason than to let potential challengers know we'd support some of them. It's kind of a timing issue - my take. I agree about the greater importance of fundraising, but sometimes if an incumbent senator is running again, other Dems will decide not to run. Perhaps there should be a two-prong approach.

We need to remember that a threat means nothing unless we are prepared to follow through (of course it's necessary that not only will we follow through, but that they understand that we will follow though). 2010 is a bit away.. so Nelson may feel that things will blow over.
But yes, letter writing, calling, etc. is definately a necessary as well.

This was during the time when he was discussing bipartisanship. He said that he and Mitch McConnell may not agree on the fact that he thinks the public option should be part of the bill, but that they can agree on limiting malpractice insurance.
So, he's made it known in front of the country.
He also met with some Progressive Dems in either the House or Senate a week or so ago, and he reiterated to them his support for a public option.
It's not about him, it's about these Ben Nelson types. Reconciliation is necessary for DINOs not really Reps.

We're stuck with this guy if we want a Democratic Seat in Nebraska...
Nebraska is a conservative state...Nelson is the most conservative Dem in the Senate, but if he wasn't there we would have a conservative Republican...it is better to have him...
If he hadn't voted for the stimulus bill it wouldn't have passed..if he votes with the GOP half the time on her issues, thats fine with me...If he were a Senator in a state like California, Id run him out but Nebraska is fine...
The main thing is to get Al Franken in and get Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins on board...two Republicans...that means if two Democrats filibuster he still had the 60 votes to get it passed...
President Obama's BEST BET is to get corporate America behind this...It seems like getting healthcare costs reduced in half would please corporate America...corporate america is drowning in these costs...
President Obama needs to get corporate America to push the GOP to support universal healthcare...
The GOP doesn't care about the people, but they will listen to corporate america as they will do anything for campaign money...

The award for the dumbest argument of the week award goes to the gentleman from Nebraska, Senator Ben Nelson! (For brilliance in oppossing the public option in health care.)
So, check this out, this guy is opposed to the public plan option because it's a better option???
from
Link
Nelson's problem, he told CQ, is that the public plan would be too attractive and would hurt the private insurance plans. "At the end of the day, the public plan wins the game," Nelson said. Including a public option in a health plan, he said, was a "deal breaker."
-----------
Of course the article mentions his office had no comment (so I won't bother calling his office for an explanation either, obviously they have nothing to add to that really dumb indefensible position).
Nelson is actually against what he thinks is the best option, unbelievable. Perhaps he needs to be awarded the 'dumb argument of the month' award (an upgrade). I was holding out on bestowing that award figuring the GOP had not weighed in yet.. but I think we have a winner right here in Nelson.

Vero,
Exactly, private healthcare options would have incentive to become more efficient and more cost effective, which is the entire point of health care reform.
I think Barack would be well served to make it clear that the public option is required in anything he signs. They can then frame their debate and be 'flexible' on many other parts, but the public option is central to keep incentives in place for private companies to be more cost effective. Without it, we are just paying lip service to healthcare reform.

I'm glad to hear it, but the message is apparently not clear enough. Perhaps a 'veto' threat can get the public option debate closed off. Or perhaps Rahm needs to pay a visit to Nelson's office.
I do think we can allow Nelson and others a bit of time to find a way of saving face while they change their position, but at the same time we need to prepare for the possibility that our dollars might be needed to unseat those that oppose our core agenda.
All the writing and calling does nothing, and the threat of unseating Nelson means nothing, unless we are willing to back it up with our own $ in contributions to unseat him, and votes against him. That's the bottom line, whether those in NE vote against him, and those not in NE contribute to his challenger.
anyway, let's see what the landscape looks like in a few days and review it then.

Oh, and my wife will deliver in June and our policy does NOT cover maternity, delivery, etc (that would cost us around $12,000 a year).
I say let every single congress person go find their own private health insurance policy for their families, and then pay for it out of pocket. And, see how many of them would be declined because of their age, pre-existing, etc.

And now, because of the need to fill every single 24-hour period with 24 hours of news, we hear all kinds of non-news items and plenty of drama...much of which is driven not by journalists but by TV personalities disguised as journalists (Hannity for one).
Keep reading between the lines.

That's insightful on your part - the use of the word "luck" is subjective. One man's luck is another man's opportunity due to hard work.
I think newspapers, etc. are becoming obsolete because they cannot be trusted. There is always a slant to many news organizations, so you can't read the news and feel like you're getting it - straight up. Many news articles and tv reports almost feel like an opinion piece, when they're not supposed to be. I feel like almost every article I read from the big newspapers is quoting some anonymous source, or unnamed official from the administration, which, to me, gives each article an air of untrustworthiness since you don't know who is giving the information that forms the basis for the article, so you can't determine their motive.
Something has to change within the industry.

[spoiler alert] I like his ending, in favor of President Obama: "This eschewal of the quick rhetorical jab or news cycle victory in favour of a long-term readjustment is soothing to the nerves and curiously bolstering of the spirit ... The American people are wise enough to sense this. And they want more of it. What they want less of, so far as we can tell, is the shrill siren of the current opposition."

Why don't catholic bishops understand that criminalizing abortion will not reduce the number of abortions ? Mexico has a much higher abortion rate than the United states does and abortion is outlawed in Mexico. They also never say anything about the child molestation done by catholic priests. what a bunch of hypocrites. they are putting their feet in their mouth when they throw hissy fits about unchristian behavior or uncatholic behavior.

Thanks for the link!
Hate to be greedy, but, please, may we have some more? A link to build a bankroll to fund a war room for advertisements and canvassing and phone banks to counter the misinformation that will be coming down the pike about the health-care bill - both negotiations and final form?
We are already seeing ads, interviews, floor speeches and press conferences filled with misinformation and innuendo that can manipulate opinions reported in polls. The polls, in turn, can provide cover for Congress members looking for cover to vote against the bill.
So, I and maybe others need to know about evaluations of relevant links so I can find one that I can trust that will fund strategic, tactical and rapid responses starting pretty soon.
I figure whitehouse.gov cannot do it; will OFA or DNC do this kind of specific use fundraising?
Is it better to go through move-on or organizations like aarp or unions or would that fragment us too much to be effective?

Just read on Politico that PBO will meet with Sen. Baucus and Sen Grassley to discuss healthcare reform.
Marc Ambinder on the different approaches being taken in the House & Senate:
'On health care, Obama expects substantive progress toward a bill in both chambers. The House's measure will likely include a significant expansion of government-run programs; the Senate will probably go in a different direction, coupling a mandate for insurance with expensive government subsidies for those who can't afford it.'

It's a good this reconciliation is in the cards.

the federal income guidelines determined once that I made $10 a month too much to get help with food...they were wrong. They decided this year that I paid too little in fed tax, and I owe $500. I am now moving to a one bedroom apt, with my son.
they don't know what they are talking about and they are breaking my heart. I'm afraid we are never going to get healthcare for all, no strings attached, no telling me if I can have it or not.

'Baucus's approach to the mandate is a hybrid of Obama's affordability concerns and Clinton's emphasis on universality. The mandate only kicks in once "affordable" insurance options are available to all Americans. The key here is what "affordable" means.'

We don't need a hybrid...Obama's plan was better then Hillary's and more likely to get Republican support...
The main focus needs to be on reducing the cost...that is the only thing Republican and Independent voters care about...we can increase the amount of people insured in another plan..the mandate will make it harder to sell the plan....
Obama's got to bottom line increase the amount of physicians...inspire them to work longer hours or something as we don't have enough..
Another thing...the bill that failed yesterday..obamas got to tell the banks, if they dont let this pass they get no more money...

Just so everyone knows there really is a cake, here's the recipe ...
PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
• 1 (20 ounce) can sliced pineapple
• 10 maraschino cherries
FOR THE CAKE (use the Bisquick recipe below)
DIRECTIONS
1. Melt the butter over medium high heat in the iron skillet. Remove from the heat and sprinkle the brown sugar evenly to cover the butter. Next, arrange pineapple rings around the bottom of the pan, one layer deep. Place a maraschino cherry into the center of each pineapple ring. Prepare the cake mix as directed by the manufacturer, substitute some of the pineapple juice for some of the liquid in the directions. Pour the batter over the pineapple layer.
2. Bake as directed by the cake mix directions. Cool for 10 minutes, then carefully turn out onto a plate. Do not let the cake cool too much or it will be stuck to the pan.
Plain Cake with Bisquick Flour (Use a large cast iron skillet if you have one) Grease and flour the skillet and bake for 45-55 minutes depending on your oven.
• •
• 1-1/2 cups New Bisquick
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1 egg
• 1/2 cup cold water or milk
• 2 tablespoons shortening
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
SO THERE!!! Bet you all thought there was never a cake! LOL!

WASHINGTON - The first couple took full advantage of the cool spring night.
After a date night out on Saturday evening, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama decided to take a stroll when their motorcade arrived back at the White House.
So they began walking on the driveway of the White House South Lawn while holding hands. First they passed the West Wing, then their children's swing set. They kept walking, swinging their hands together.
There were no Secret Service agents right behind them -- the agents stood off, in one of the rare moments that the Obamas had private space outside the White House walls.
As the Obamas walked behind shrubbery and out of sight, the unscripted moment left reporters guessing where they were going. To the vegetable garden? The basketball court? No final word, but they eventually came back the same way from where they started, rounding out their 8-minute walk.

The man can't even take a walk with his wife under the moonlight. Shameful, just shameful. I don't recall seeing any photos of the Bushes while they were taking romantic walks around the White house. Shameful!

They do seem a little put off by the picture taking. They must've been psyched to have gotten the Secret Service to lay off, and then BAM! - the paparazzi, I mean, main stream media - are there to document their walk.
I enjoy getting a glimpse of them being cute together, but you have a point, it is intrusive.

I can't wait to learn who President Obama chooses for the SCOTUS.
I would love to be a fly on the wall during his interviews with prospective candidates. The discussion will not doubt be robust. As a lawyer, I am so excited by this development.
I wonder if one day, he would be up for a possible appointment, himself. I think that would be awesome!
As a Professor, a Pragmatist About the Supreme Court
Many American presidents have been lawyers, but almost none have come to office with Barack Obama's knowledge of the Supreme Court. Before he was 30, he was editing articles by eminent legal scholars on the court's decisions. Later, as a law professor, he led students through landmark cases from Plessy v. Ferguson to Bush v. Gore. (He sometimes shared his own copies, marked with emphatic underlines and notes in bold, all-caps script.)

My bet is that he picks Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court....she is Dean of Harvard Law School and the current solicitor general to the Supreme Court...
He needs a woman or a minority...he will pick 2-3 justices during his first term...first needs to be least controversial...
My picks..
First Justice Picked - Elisa Kagan, Harvard Dean
Second Justice Picked - Deval Patrick, MA Governor
Third Justice - Koh, Yale Dean, first Asian on Supereme Court.
Fourth Justice - Latino Woman
These are my picks...
One reason I pick Kagan first, is Patrick is more controversial, as a governor with no record on these things, a Democrat, etc..

That is the correct amount that President Obama requested, isn't it?
A couple things: first, I want to thank whomever it was again for posting the Boss Hog article about Smithfield. Secondly, I think that the President, administration, and federal and local agencies have done a great job in handling the spread of swine flu. However, I believe that the EPA and others have a responsibility to do their research in Mexico and tell the people if the Smithfield Foods subsidiary in Mexico is ground zero for the spread of the virus.
Since corporations OWN our Congress and federal agencies, there is a good chance that they will try to find a way to cover for Smithfield if, indeed, their lagoons, pollution, and industrial farming methods are responsible. If they ARE found responsible, they need to reimburse the federal government--us--for the $1.5 billion the cleanup for their mess is costing us, as well as reimburse other governments for all of the money they are spending overseas to handle the crisis. Hospital bills, costs of burial, and negligent homicide costs should also go onto Smithfield's bill. If anyone here agrees with me, I'd invite you to write the White House, your representatives, and the EPA. It might help to pass along the article on Smithfield:

And, because Smithfields has been sued in Virginia & North Carolina is exactly why these industrialized hog operations leave the country, move operations to countries with lesser developed economies where they can POLLUTE and PROFIT. For example Mexico, Poland,
Smithfield's didn't get away with it in North Carolina either. A $12 Million penalty for violations of the Clean Water Act. Third highest ever penalty in the U.S.
Check this wiki entry:

Smithfields buys up smaller operations across the U.S. and then puts the companies out of business. So, any chance of getting pork & pork products raised outside of the madness of a million hog operation is fastly becoming impossible. And, food security & biosecurity become HUGE issues!

Granddaughter Stacie, U of Oregon Student (see my Profile for her picture) got an "A" on this...
Subject: How Obama-Biden Health Care Reform is Addressing Access to Coverage
Obama-Biden health care reform plan is a relatively new prototype, which Obama's administration envision "using existing providers, doctors, and plans" to essentially expand current health care system in United States.
Although some details have yet to be amplified; fundamental goal of Obama-Biden current plan's structure is to provide Americans access to health care.
Employers
Obama-Biden plan preserves employer-based plans. Employees will continue to receive health care plans through employers, if offered.
Unless employees choose to opt out, employers will be mandated to enroll employees in company's plan.
Another option for company is to pay a percentage of its payroll towards its employees' health care costs; a concept is referred to as a "play-or-pay" mandate.
For small businesses that cannot afford to offer health plans to all employees, Obama-Biden plan offers Small Business Health Tax Credit with "a refundable tax credit up to 50% on premiums paid by small businesses on behalf of employees"
Individuals
Adults may choose NOT to receive health care however, though it will be readily available.
Health Policy Center predicts that this will leave 6 percent of non-elderly population uninsured, as opposed to now current 17 percent.
Individuals having insurance already do not have to do anything.
Individuals not covered by Medicaid, who however cannot afford public or private plans, an income-based sliding scale tax credit for premiums will be available.
Criteria of Obama-Biden plan useful to individuals are:
portability of employee's plans, guaranteed eligibility (no one turned down for pre-existing conditions), and easy enrollment allows individuals to enroll easily at schools, churches, etc.
Government
Goal of Obama-Biden plan is to cover every American.
In order to achieve this goal, federal government must expand and create programs that will make health insurance accessible to everyone.
Medicaid and SCHIP programs will expand changing eligibility standards to include more people. National Health Insurance Exchange (NHIE) will be created for "individuals without access to Medicaid, SCHIP, employer-sponsored insurance could purchase coverage.
Small businesses could also use Exchange to purchase coverage for their workers."
A public plan created that these groups could buy into, as well as a range of private insurer options.
Private insurer plans in NHIE will have to be as generous (if not more so), than basic public plan offered.

You have a point.
Something is not right about Cheney and his visibility and his proximity to D.C.
On a related note, that article illustrates the speech Obama gave against this damn war.
Link
To quote some pertinent parts: "I don't oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other armchair, weekend warriors in this administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne."
"I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences."
We are now FEELING the undetermined length, cost, and consequences of this Iraq "war." We will never truly be finished there - not in Obama's 2 terms, and maybe even in the next president's term(s). We are really stuck there.
We had a momentum in Afganistan that is completely gone now. This is the single biggest issue that made me truly dislike my former President....Iraq. I still do not understand why we had to fight that war, at that precise time.

I read a previous post about journalism and I have
to agree - it's dead. Ever since during the 1990's
of guys like Peter Jennings,Tim Russert,Ted Koppel
and others we counted on them to report on the big
issues that needed to be reported. Now in this time
period, who do we have to lean on?
Keith Olbermann - Ever since the campaing we loved
him and became a true journalist. Now,he's waisting
his time on Tourtue which is an important issue...
but is starting to become more boring
I can name alot but there's one that comes to mind
and his name is Ed Schultz. Now we all know that Ed
is not a journalist,he's a radio talk show host &
now the host of his new show "The Ed Show".
Ever since he came on TV i've been so hooked that
I've seen him take on the issues that no host on
MSNBC or anyone in the media has done.Health Care,
Education,Credit Cards,you name em he's done it.
I don't see Ed was an entertainer,I see Ed as some
one who said on his radio show "Who is looking for
the truth". And that caught my attention.I do feel
that some of us overreact to what Ed says such as
Single Payer Health Care, etc. but I do agree with
what he says.
On Friday,I watched Ed's show and he had his Op-ED
disscussing the president's stance on tortue. When
he said that what PBO said about tourtue it really
made a smile on my face as he applauded the man in
charge. You see Ed's not like the far left or shall
I call The Three Stooges Keith,Racheal, and Chris M
,he's different than the far right. He tells it how
it should be unlike Joe Scumbo on Mourning Hoe.
I've listen to Ed since the campaign and he's very
compassionate about us....The Obama Nation.
Any thoughts?

I listened to Ed Schultz on the radio during the GE campaign. He was doing road trips and townhall meetings all over the country about problems we need to solve. Healthcare came up again and again. He knows Americans want change in healthcare.
I especially enjoyed the townhall meetings Ed ran from Anchorage when Palin first came on the scene. I was hearing stories from the citizens of AK that did not support Palin. There were stories told in that townhall meeting the MSM never told us about. Ed was digging up truth. I appreciated his work.
I think PBO thinks we need to come up with a plan that incorporates where we are now and adding to it so all are covered while cutting the costs of healthcare for Americans. He wants to give us a choice which is usually a more inclusive model that is more readily accepted. His campaign healthcare plan was different than Hillary's plan. I think it is based on the fact that throwing out a whole system to adopt something entirely different is harder to achieve since many like some ot the things about the present system. PBO is pragmatic and has looked at what went wrong with previous attempts as well as how to get to where Americans are covered without throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Some are only wanting a totally new government plan and I worry that Ed is in that category. I hope he doesn't divide us on healthcare instead of promote the plan. I think if too much arguing gets going for a specific plan only it could doom the passing of the healthcare changes.

FLORIDA in the HOUSE!
GOOD MORNING O FAMILY AND HAPPY SUNDAY!
NO SCHEDULE POSTED TO WH TODAY BUT HERE'S A LITTLE OF WHAT WE CAN EXPECT ON THE SUNDAY TALK SHOWS ........
Competing narratives on the Sunday shows, as Arlen Specter talks about his party shift on CBS's "Face the Nation" and NBC's "Meet the Press," while newly confirmed HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius cycles through all five of the big shows to give the latest on swine flu.
The biggest story, though, may be who will replace retiring Justice David Souter. Expect that topic to dominate Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy (D-Vt.) appearances on "This Week," and "State of the Union." Read the full Sunday shows lineup

As I mentioned in my first post, no schedule but here is a synopsis of a big issue that will be discussed on the shows today ......
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius makes her debut as a member of President Barack Obama's Cabinet on this Sunday's talk shows, and Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter makes the rounds to explain his switch to the Democratic Party.
Fresh from her Senate confirmation, Sebelius stops by all five major Sunday shows to try to assuage fears over the spread of the swine flu. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Richard Besser, will join her along the way.
****************************** ****************************** ****
We here all know what we will face prior to getting a Health Care bill passed. We will be fought every step of the way from many. The fact that Kathleen Sebelius will be on every show today means she is willing to get out there, get in their faces and let her voice be heard. For those who have time try to listen to her throughout the shows. We all need to stand behind her and keep her on track.
As bad as this flu epidemic is I'm a firm believer that if we look past the bad there in good in everything that happens and maybe the good is that this is the perfect time to get our message out there about the importance of health care for everyone. There are people out there who are sick right now and can't even afford to go to a doctor. You have to imagine how many people are sitting in ER waiting rooms because it's their only choice. How many of them are so sick yet they have to wait their turn.
So let's listen to what Kathleen has to say today and e mail her out full support.

I disagree. Part of why they don't have term limits is for the freedom of thought. Souter is a perfect example. He was supposed to be a conservative, but as time went on, as the bench became unreasonably conservative, his philosophy became more in line with the moderates/liberals.
Not giving them term limits keeps politics to a minimum. If a president is appointing a new judge every few years, it would be a highly political situation on the bench.

Good morning everyone.
I tried to watch CSpan this morning but one of GW's attorney's was on making a case for everything that was wrong with the last administration. I cannot believe the calls that support torture.
On Insurance reform:
A single payer option must stay in the bill. I pay 500.00 a month to add two children to my policy. My insurance is or was paid for by the SBBC. I will be leaving at the end of the school year for budget cuts. My school lost 13 people. I spoke with my insurace carrier. My cobra will be almost 1000.00 a month. I was paying a fifth of my salary to insure my family, now it will be half of my salary.
I spoke with my mail carrier. They have the same insurance options as congress. IT IS A CHOICE POLICY. She chose Blue Cross. Her insurance cost is $123.00 a month.
I don't want a subsidy....I want the same insurance choice that congress has. THIS MUST PASS

I haven't had health insurance in more years than I care to mention. When I worked even though the company paid 75%, what I had to pay was more than I could afford. I did it, but my bills were never paid on time. Now I'm out of work (for the 2nd time during this recession) and there is nothing out there I can afford on my own.

The responsible things to do if you suspect you have been exposed to the A/H1N1 Swine/Avian/Human virous is to:
1. Limit your exposure to others.
2. Call your primary care physicians' office, and they will tell you when to come in for an examination. Likely, the office staff will instruct you to visit during off-hours and not peak time to limit exposure to others.

But, once Barack Obama became the Nominee for the Presidential ticket for Campaign 2008, he jumped on board & was just as 'rabid & avid' in support of Barack Obama.
It appears to me that Rep. JOE SESTAK is a very loyal Democrat. IMHO.

If this turns out to be minor then it will be the BIGGEST wake up call for all.
And the fact that it was Mexicans who drew it to our attention, shouts that there is only ONE answer.
MEDICARE FOR ALL,
for if we dont, the sickest and uninsured in our midst may die first but not before they have spread it to the rest of us.
Double wake up call.

Hatch: Is Obama using 'code' for activist judge?
WASHINGTON - A senior Republican on the Senate committee that will consider President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee says he's worried the president might pick a judicial activist instead of someone who bases decisions on the law.
Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah says Obama's comment last week about naming a justice who understands Americans' problems and has empathy for people is "code" for putting in place a person who legislates from the bench.
Hatch says he realizes the president will choose a more liberal person for the opening created by Justice David Souter's retirement. Hatch, a top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, says he expects the nominee to favor abortion rights.
Hatch spoke Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Pat Buchanan is a dinosaur, lives in the past, & loves war. Wouldn't worry about Pat Buchanan, he's "yesterday's man".
Personally, I watch a "smorg", of these shows just to see what the corporate media is "feeding the masses". Every once in awhile I even tune into the "Foxy" network but can't stand too much of their "propaganda".
As long as you are firm with your own "philosophy" and not "swayed" it's good to know what they're "feeding" low information voters.
And, you can bet there's "Dems" in Communications whose sole job it is to monitor ALL media. It's simply "smart" politics.
No need to complain about them, because that's exactly what they love, "controversy" and the more you complain, the more they continue. Example: Obama this & Obama that, Obama ... Obama... Obama, and ALL networks did it ever since Inaugral Day. Now that they've found out Americans respect the President & like his direction for the country, you are now hearing "the President" and "President Obama" more & more.
Robert Gibbs was asked to grade the first 100 days of the new "Washington Press Corps" & he gave them an "A". His philosopy just may be "smother them with kindness".

Specter is confirming my suspicions. He's an opportunistic asshole. I'm not sure what he's doing as a Democrat, that he couldn't do as a Republican.
He watered down the stimulus. He didn't vote for the budget. He didn't vote for the cramdown in the bankruptcy bill. He doesn't support a public option - which the President supports.
With all of that in mind, why did he bother switching. To WIN the election. That is all. Not due to philosophy or ideology. But because he wants an easier path to victory. That is slimey.

Wouldn't count on victory here either if I were Specter Vero. I'm hearing lots of noises that Rep. Joe Sestak is still seriously considering a run for theat seat; and personally I hope he does run!!!
Sestak is a SOLID supporter of the Prez and his objectives. His was also an Admiral in the U.S. Navy and has bucked the DCCC before to get the seat he now has!!!
I find him to be a very attractive candidate (on a political level!!!! LOL) and I think we all should support his efforts.
Now if we could only find someone like him in Nebraska to put Nelson out of his miseries!!!!

I always thought he was a good man and when he was our representative he did not toe the hard core right wing line. Don't know what tack he'd take as a senator, but he always seemed to take the job of representing our district seriously ahead of following the national party line. The ethanol debate goes well beyond the scope of this article:
Link
The ethanol debate can drag up the MTBE/Methanex case from a few years ago (which in my view they had a strong case, but given the political environment didn't stand a chance). It seems to me that if we say ethanol is ok, then we must say methanol is ok, as they share many of the same environmental issues (particularly when coupled with leaky tanks). In fact it looks like many of the same special interests are involved in making the CA ban of Methanex a nationwide protectionist measure.
For reference (as most folks are not familar with the CA/Methanex suit from years ago):
Link

So the current ethanol debate may raise issues with NAFTA and previously settled litigation.
The only thing that is clear is the special interest groups are still alive and doing well.

Also, given Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) ethically tainted history and connection to ethanol, we would be well advised to stay well away from them.
I'm a bit uncomfortable with ADM and the Obama administration at the moment, given that the Decator IL based ADM donates heavily and has a history of political corruption (whether proved or not, it's still a history). I fear any connections will come back to bite us sooner or later.
The science of ethanol vs methanol pales in comparison to the politics of ethanal vs methanol (Note that methanol can also be added to gasoline instead of MTBE so most of the debate is a false choice of ethanol vs MTBE).
anyway, seems like there are no simple issues.

John King had David Gergen, a woman who was Deputy Chief of Staff to Clinton, and CHARLES OGELTREE, Proffessor from Harvard Law School who in the past taught both Barack & Michelle Obama. Very well spoken impressive man that Charles. Will have to do some research.

You have seen the famous painting of God reaching out towards Adam of the art of Michelangelo of the Sistine chapel; however, the fingers not touching. God can influence us with positive emotions without needing to actually touch us. According to Newton's laws. Every action has like reaction. Then there is the momentum effect. We can cause positive emotions around us with a nice smile or other actions of goodwill without actually touching. Music also has a way to affect emotions as well.
Some of us are better at working with people, data or things. We have a challenge with the homeless population. Some of them are vets. Perhaps some vets may have poor hearing due to being around loud vehicles or explosions in Iraq in the past. Perhaps that is why counseling may not work since it requires one to have good listening skills.
Promoting art can be good therapy. Reaching out to the homeless and others regarding art can greatly increase the quality of life for many people. Art can also be excellent way to cope for people with cancer or love ones of people with cancer. Art can be good for those who are facing big challenges such as being unemployed.
Please increase funding for people to learn art. Art may include playing music. This will increase goodwill within our communities in more ways than one; Especially, if one hears music being played within our inner cities or cafes. The arts can give people hope. Especially if money can be raised for those who learn how to paint pictures or play music…

this question might seem strange but, seriously, what is the difference between communism and democracy...?
As far as my young eyes can see and brain can understand, is that under communism you have only one idealogy but, under a democracy you have more than one. But there are similarities between democracy and communism, whether one is forceful and the other one not so forceful, they both try to washbrain and manipulate the public to gain and stronghold onto power.
For example fox news, Rush Limbaughs and the republican party...etc They all talk both tax cut and smaller governments, freedom for all but, if someone to talk a microscope, they are only talking and catering for a small groupe and that small group is the rich. While the rest of the population must work hard, boot-strap, dont desrve tax cuts because private sector should get those and it will trickle down....
They know that is all bunch of lies and stupidity...but why try to stop such things that prey on some of the vulnerable emotionals out there that will gaurantee power at the expense of the mass--most of the population....
Good morning o-fam....democracy was ment for the people and tehre voices and will to be executed and not to use fear and mirrors to mislead to have and keep power...
do not try to have power for power stake but to get it to listen, understand the mass and find ways to make them better and if u cannot do that ...step aside and let some other group or person slide in and see if they can do better...

Communism is the total ownership of all the means of production by the state. The income theoretically from the state's production will "go to each according to his needs".
In layman's terms, this system is doomed to fail because it relies on Rousseau's theory of the "noble savage", a presumption that everyone will do the right thing. Of course Rousseau has been proven wrong by mankind's behaviour ever since he wrote those words, & he himself is the perfect example of the "ignoble savage". He & his wife(?) left their new born baby on the steps of a foundling home.
Democracy is all about the private ownership of the means of production, often called a "laissez faire"economy.
Socialism is a system which allows a mix of the two approaches. Things like essential services are run by the government, whether or not they make a profit, while the rest of production is in private hands. However, private production must be constrained by legislation so that it does not become exploitive of the employees & indeed the "public welfare" in general.
Hope that helps!
Helen

Over the last year I've been on their blogs quite a bit & overwhelmingly you could see Democrats there blogging.
So, they've "miffed" the hand that fed them as viewership means ratings, ratings means advertisers & advertisers means $$$$$$$.
CNN just continues to bite the hand that feeds them. So, either they change their perspective or they are doomed. But, CNN is afraid to go head-to-head agains the FOXY Network.

The election is in 2010. It gives PBO something to hold over Specter. PBO is about compromises and does not expect everything to perfectly lined up, but he would not stand for obstruction of the healthcare bill from Specter.

I'm sure there will be a primary challenge...
Another thing..if Specter get's re-elected in 2010 (when he will be 81 years old) I really doubt he will serve a full 6-year term with his health problems, age and all...he will probably serve 2 years, then in 2012 the PA Governor (which will hopefully be a DEM)...will pick his replacement...
Sestak really has no chance...One benefit of the Democratic base being bigger in PA is that it is broader...a lot of the moderate Republicans registered as Democrats to vote for Obama in the primary...many of these will vote for Specter in the primary...
Specter will outfundraise Sespak (and whoever else is thrown at him) by far, and will get all the endorsements...
I could really care less how Specter voted the last 28 years...the last 28 years he was a Republican and the state was a lot more conservative...
If he is willing to vote progressive the next 2 year, and if he get's re-elected, that's all that matters...
His switching to be a DEM will be HUGE in getting universal healthcare passed, environment bills passed, bills to create jobs...all the major stuff...
Specter will be forced to vote more progressive because if he wins the Democratic Primary, he wins the election as the state is overwhelmingly Democrat and the Republican Opponent (Toomey) is so far right and unpopular that he doesn't have to worry about the GE...
The DNC should throw at him a liberal/progressive challenger to force him to vote with the party...
One thing I respect about Specter, was when he left the Republican Party to be a Democrat he really didn't trash the Republican Party too much, he was honorable about it, and as a result he will be better at working with the Democratic Party to get votes on these issus...
Another thing 12 DEMS voted with the banks and not with the people yesterday...12...nobody is talking about primary challenges to them...
In 4 years Specter will be out, we will have someone younger and much more progressive...

I think he'll focus on PA need for the next two years.

Here's some contact info for Sestak. I say we can start laying the groundwork to encourage him to do run against Specter. I'll be sending emails of encouragement and calling his office regularly to do the same. If he knows he's got support, then I believe he will stay on the offensive, pushing the issue of running a TRUE Democrat.
The best case is that he wins.
The worse case is that he doesn't run against Specter, or loses, but makes Specter sweat and forces Specter to actually be a Democrat and support Obama's agenda.

I agree, Vero, competition is good. Sometimes "old geezers" just run one too many times I've seen it so often, & not always "age" old but just been there too long. Specter is both. And, I'm no spring-chick myself, 59 this summer, but I've seen it all before.
Rank and file Democrats deserve to choose the "best person" for the job by Primary selection. That's DEMOCRACY.
Brilliant idea to encourage Rep. Joe Sestak. It was his original plan to run & he deserves to be in the line-up. As I said up thread apparently he's already raised $3 million according to Chris Matthews.
Rep. Joe Sestak (D) PA is the highest ranking U.S. Retired Military Service person in all of Congress, he retired as a 3-Star Navy General, and he's relatively young.
Thank you for your service, Rep. Joe Sestak, and I encourage you to run for the U.S. Senate in 2010 as planned.

I am still waiting to see workers hired in mass doing the job needed for this country as the president has laid out, but so far i dunno...kinda seeing only incremental stuff.
I just don't understand why no one is working rebuilding the LEVEES? (or are they). Also we could be hiring millions of workers constructing the Electric Grid, and the Speed Rail, and Wind Turbines.... But i dunno it just seems as if we're not being informed of this (either by our President, or the Media).
I kinda was hoping it would a HUGE hiring of workers doing the jobs needed....not this small step kinda thing which isn't really showing the work being done.

The only real solutions are in the private sector.
What the government did was prevent a downward spiral towards depression. What BO is doing is providing a vision, motivation, and leadership. For example, the high speed rail and other ideas you mentioned are fabulous, but require people you, me, us to move local and state governments to partner with the private sector to get it done!!!!

Money alone won't make it, the structures have to be changed and this unfortunately takes time.
Secretary Stephen Chu is doing an excellent job to accelerate the standards of geting electricity off a national electric grid.
One this things are settled, there will be massive hirings.

Some comments:
1. Modern Bankers are lazy. It much easier to lend to bad risks companies or individuals, collect exorbitant fees, wait for them to default or go bankrupt and then resell any recovered assets rather than evaluate good business plans, make roots in the community, and profit when everyone does well.
2. $500,000 paying jobs are really $35,000 jobs. With the advances in computer technology people used to have a plethora or knowledge can be replaced by adequate folks with access to internet and all the data that is now available.
3. The tough bankruptcy laws backfired. Rather than being able to collect from people who don't have assets (real estate went done), banks loaned money to bad risks, assuming they be able to collect in court or re-sell appreciating assets. Wrong, see 1.
No more money to bad or good banks! Let the bad banks go into bankruptcy (B of A, CitiGroup , Providian), sense that is where they want the American people to be.

Rendell doesn't need to be a U.S. Senator...
He was once head of the DNC...He could easily join Obama's cabinet at some point in his second term...
Remember, Pennsylvania is the LARGEST state with an elected Democratic Governor (as the NY and IL Governors were not elected, they replaced elected Governors that resigned)...
He is chairman of the national governors association...
Or he could do lots of other things...
Yes, strong chance Specter won't run in 2010 because of his age, health (cancer)...but even if he runs he will be 81 and I doubt he will serve a full 6 year term...will probably serve 2 years of that term...
The next DEM governor will pick his replacement in 2012 or 2013....By then Rendell will be about 70...not sure if he wants to serve many years in the Senate...a lot of Governors hate the Senate..they say it is too slow...
Just make sure your state elects a Democrat in 2010...
Pennsylvania might have to replace both Senators....Bob Casey I think might run for Governor in 2010...He would easily win, would do a great job...
That would put Casey in a very unusual position...
Upon leaving the Senate and becoming Governor he would pick the replacement for his Senate seat in 2011...then in 2013 he would pick Specter's replacement if Specter retired...
He'd pick good people...young, progressives...
Casey would be a great gov, PA would have 2 great senators, and Obama would be President for a second term with an 80% approval rating, everyone would be happy...
PA would trend more Democrat...right now Pennsylvania is
51.2% Democrat
37.0% Republican
Hopefully more Dems will be registed over the next few years and it can be
54% Democrat
34% Republican
Would be great...

I don't think this blog needs to chill out, as much as Daily Kos. They are the epitome of chicken littledom. That is one of the most usefully useless progressive website ever. Useful in that they are a progressive voice. Useless in that all they do is complain and inflame.
In terms of PBO, I think a lot of the wooing of Specter happened without his involvement. I'm actually a little bit disappointed in Joe Biden. This seems more like a political notch in his belt than anything else - bragging rights that he converted a Republican.
I just don't see the advantage in having Specter, and I don't think PBO saw it for more than just a nice rub in the wounds of the Republicans.
Democrats better be careful not to get too cute with their power. I hope PBO reigns them in because stunts like this will sour voters. Republicans aren't happy about the Specter switch, but I'm noticing that most Democrats aren't happy either, so it seems like the only people really happy are Biden, Rendell, and Specter.

PA Gubernatorial rules are:
Election every 4 years &
Term Limited to 2 years
Gov. Ed Rendell is Term Limited as he's serving his second term. He was elected in 2004 & 2006. By my calculation the Gubernatorial Race for PA would then be November 2010.

Whereas, the majority of people tend to only think about critical issues in ideological limited extreme terms of "black or white", President Obama seeks to take into account the tapestry of colors that lie in between in an effort to reach for nuanced practical solutions potentially beneficial to the larger majority rather than a select few while also remaining morally centered and true to himself.

ok, so in light of specter and nelson's comments about this, exactly how many democratic senators can we expect to support a public health option?
that is what obama wants, right? and if we have a majority we can still pass major reform with the reconciliation process can't we?
because i really want the public plan option, and that's really the only way we can get real healthcare reform.
what pisses me off is, if there is a substantial minority of democrats opposing this, and we have to go around them with budget reconciliation, then it will be really easy for the republicans to frame this in a negative way, i think.
we have got to get these democrats in line. the only reason they would oppose that is if they get money from the insurance companies, which a lot of them do. but this reform is necessary, we NEED this.
and i'm worried because i know the white house would prefer to leave the crafting of the healthcare plan to congress for the most part. and harry reid tends to cave a lot.

I wish that as part of the exercise of coming up with a plan, every congress person and senator had to go to the private market to purchase their own insurance policy. They just have no clue what it's like to get insurance in the "real" world.

Cilla, do you really thing the Seantors & Congresswomen/me write the Bill?
That's all done by staffers: Legislative Policy Writers, Legislation Writers, Legislative Assistants etc. etc. The "politicans" can barely read what's put before them with the exception of a few "exceptionally bright" few.
So, when Vero says she disappointed, that's why. It's the comments coming out of the right & the left and in the end it will become a "white wash". As for the "public option", I didn't hear or read President Obama's comments in favor of the "public option" or a partial-public option, so I can't really comment. But, during the campaign he never did articulate the "public option", from what I remember was he said he favored providing health care that people could afford, just like the plan Congress has, and that he was in favor of mandates for covering children. That's what I remember.
But, to think that the Legislation isn't written is naive. It's written, and it's all about deleting or adding at this point.
And, NO matter what the Grand Old/Obstructionist Party says, it isn't Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid's Health Care Bill, they simply present the Bill for passage in the HOUSE & SENATE. Just like the American Recovery & Reinvesment Act.
Legislation takes months & months to craft & it's more than a full-time job for many staffers with lots of midnight oil.

If there was a way of doing it that involved more government regulation and involvement, I'm happy to do it that way as well." - President Obama, March 5th

Great to hear President Obama is flexible either way! I missed his most recent comments. Thanks for posting. The key in any health care legislation is "Affordable". Right now it seems that health care is NOT affordable for 50 Million Americans.

Sorry for the delay in responding Cilla as I was having supper.
My comments were in response to comments "the bill isn't even written yet". You can bet there's a Bill drafted and waiting, one that is prepared by policy experts, Researchers, & Legislation Writers, Cabinet Staffers, Legislative Assistants, et al.
What we hear in media is only reactions to proposals & grandstanding by politicians on the political left & right. Really it is all "politcal theatre".

Vero,
I seriously doubt that it will play out as a weak bill that gets improved over the years. If we don't have a public option, it will be a pathetic bill that gets weaker over the years. The notion that the health industry special interests will get less influence over the years is just not supportable.
We are at our strongest now. Sure we may get another dem in the senate here and there, but public support won't get stronger for healthcare reform once the economy starts to recover. If we can't do it now let's not kid ourselves about doing it a year or two from now.
The time is now, or never. Perhaps that means we have failed, but WE have failed to support Barack and have expected him to implement this while we simple write and call. Failure is not good enough.
The GOP would love to sell us on the "wait for next year" approach.. as any delay is a victory and the chance they can defeat it later. When our own supporters buy into that it's very distressing and I feel we will lose on perhaps our biggest agenda issue.
Barack should veto anything that doesn't have the public option in it and should make that clear. All other health care 'reform' is simply lip service pandering as the underlying economics will be for higher, rather than lower health care costs.
I really hope Barack makes it crystal clear the public option isn't just 'desired', but 'required' for his signature.

Interesting take on the republican parties current position by Joe Scarborough and Gillepsie. However, I'm not sure the normal ebb and flow from democratic to republican leadership and vice versa in congress and the White House applies here. What these two pundits are forgetting is that Bush gave us the worst 8 years of American History. We ended up with what could have been a depression if it hadn't been for Obama. This is not the norm. This is more like what happened after Herbert Hoover and FDR between the 20's and 30's. After Herbert Hoovers (a republican) mess the democrats had control for decades. Its hard for the American Public to forget a great depression.

This is not a normal ebb and flow. And if they think that, then they'll be in the wilderness for a while. Bush's screw ups fundamentally shifted our country's consciousness. We are more alert, more ready to read between the lines than were were under Bush. He took advantage of our old habits of not really paying attention and trusting the establishment. That got us into 2 wars at the same time, and an economic crisis.

Subject: How Obama-Biden Health Care Reform is Addressing Access to Coverage:
Obama-Biden health care reform plan is a relatively new prototype, which Obama's administration envision "using existing providers, doctors, and plans" to essentially EXPAND CURRENT HEALTH CARE SYSTEM in United States.
Although some details have yet to be amplified; fundamental goal of Obama-Biden current plan's structure is to provide ALL Americans access to health care.
Employers
Obama-Biden plan preserves employer-based plans.
Employees will continue to receive health care plans through their employers, if offered.
Unless employees choose to opt out, employers will be mandated to enroll employees in company's plan.
Another option for company is to pay a percentage of its payroll towards its employees' health care costs; a concept is referred to as a "play-or-pay" mandate.
For small businesses that cannot afford to offer health plans to all employees, Obama-Biden plan offers Small Business Health Tax Credit with "a refundable tax credit up to 50% on premiums paid by small businesses on behalf of employees".
Individuals
Obama-Biden plan mandates all children be insured.
ADULTS MAY CHOOSE NOT to receive health care however, though it will be readily available to them.
Health Policy Center predicts that this will leave 6 percent of non-elderly population uninsured, as opposed to now current 17 percent.
Individuals having insurance already do not have to do anything.
However, for individuals not covered by Medicaid, or who cannot afford public or private plans, an income-based sliding scale tax credit for premiums will be available.
Criteria of Obama-Biden plan useful to individuals are;
...portability of employee's plans (plans will follow them from job to job), guaranteed eligibility (no one will be turned down for pre-existing conditions), and easy enrollment allows individuals to enroll in plans easily at schools, churches, etc.
Government
In order to achieve goal to cover every American, federal government must expand and create programs that will make health insurance accessible to everyone.
Medicaid and SCHIP programs WILL EXPAND ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS to include more people.
National Health Insurance Exchange (NHIE) will be created for "INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT ACCESS to Medicaid, SCHIP, or employer-sponsored insurance;
They could purchase coverage through this public plan created, as well as a range of private insurer options.
Small businesses could also use Exchange (NHIE) to purchase coverage for their workers."
Private insurer plans in NHIE will have to be as generous if not more so, than basic public plan offered

Marti,
Think these parts of Obama/Biden plan apply to your kids....
"... for INDIVIDUALS NOT COVERED by Medicaid, or WHO CANNOT AFFORD PUBLIC or PRIVATE PLANS, an INCOME-BASED SLIDING SCALE TAX CREDIT FOR PREMIUMS will be available.
National Health Insurance Exchange (NHIE) will BE CREATED for "INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT ACCESS to Medicaid, SCHIP, or employer-sponsored insurance;
... COULD PURCHASE COVERAGE THROUGH THIS PUBLIC PLAN created, as well as a range of private insurer options."
I'm hoping that this option will be available for my married daughter also, so that she won't have to stay at present employment she hates, just to provide Health Care coverage for her & husband.

"After so many years of watching a White House upend laws, I now listen raptly when President Obama plays the constitutional law professor.
He was asked at his news conference Wednesday night about the Republican fear that he will "ride roughshod over any opposition" and establish one-party rule.
"I've got Democrats who don't agree with me on everything," he said.
"And that's how it should be.
Congress is a coequal branch of government."
You almost thought the professor-in-chief was going to ask the assembled students to please turn to page 317 in their Con-Law book."

Dear Mr. President,
I Have read you are going to meet Asif Ali Zardari and Hamid Karzai.
We all trust in you not to give both of them money but american soldiers to fight terrorism there. With money you will support them the wrong way, because - honestly they will put that money into their own purse. I am really sick of the situation in Pakistan and Afganistan and this f++++g Presidents who don`t care for their land and their citizens (like for example in Swat land). Giving them money will not change the situation- also i thing it will give them the wrong sign: doing nothing but opening hand for money. Thats wrong. First they have to show really interest in fighting the taliban and then they will get your support. Who knows maybe the money will get in the hands of taliban (With Zardari or Sharif as president of Pakistan this will not suprised me).
Please dear Mr. President Obama,
help the citizen of Pakistan and Afganistan not this larifari Governments.
With best regards
