The Sun-Sentinel reports that students across Florida are getting involved in the 2008 Presidential Election...
If some Florida college students have their way, 2008 will be the year of the young voter. After all, many students are concerned about the economy, student-loan debt and the war in Iraq. Combine that with using YouTube and Facebook to get their message to the masses, and they plan to play a big role in deciding the next president. They're already turning out in large numbers. More than 6 million people between the ages of 18 and 29 voted in the presidential primaries, which is more than twice as many who voted in the 2000 and 2004 primaries, according to Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan advocacy group that focuses on first-time voters. Even during the traditionally slow summer months, students are turning up on South Florida campuses to get out the vote. That was evident Saturday, as the Florida College Democrats held a large summit at Florida Atlantic University. Hundreds of Democrats of all ages turned out for the South Florida Democratic Party Summit, including former Attorney General Janet Reno. "People for years now have been waiting for something to believe in, something to be hopeful for, and for years, we haven't found it," said John Martino, 21, a University of Central Florida student who is president of the Florida College Democrats. "Today, a young senator from Illinois talks about change and unity and that senator has captured the hearts of my generation. Barack Obama will no doubt turn out the young people in November." Reno said she, too, has been encouraged by the young people she's met and thinks they will turn out in big numbers. "They want so much to have answers and be involved in ways that will make America better," she said.
