As the Obama campaign explained last night, Barack is moving ahead with plans for tonight's debate, though it remains uncertain if John McCain will attend. But in the editorial pages of newspapers across the country this morning, there was a clear consensus -- the debate should go on.
In Virginia, from the Roanoke Times:
The debate that matters most today is the presidential debate scheduled for tonight. McCain can ill afford to snub Americans' interest in weighing the candidates. For them, too much is on the line.
From the St. Paul Tribune in Minnesota:
This week, more than ever, Americans are worried about the direction of their country, and want to participate as informed citizens in its governance. They want, and deserve, to hear more from the candidates for president, not less.
From the in Youngstown Vindicator in Ohio:
There should be no debate about having the debate . . . This is a time for both candidates — wait, let’s include the vice presidential candidates and say all four candidates — to be in front of the American people, answering myriad questions about every facet of governance as they see it.
From the Colorado Rocky Mountain News:
In this case, Barack Obama is right. "It's going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once," he said in response to McCain's desire to delay their first debate.... we don't really see the benefit for McCain or the nation in the suspension of the campaign. There will be an election in a few weeks, no matter what condition Wall Street and the economy are in at the time. McCain needs to keep making his case to the American people about what needs to be done.

From the Waterloo Cedar-Falls Courier in Iowa:
The series of debates between Republican presidential candidate John McCain, and Democrat Barack Obama couldn't come at a better time. Those in tune with American politics are hungry for a credible forum.
And in New Hampshire, from the Portsmouth Herald:
The need for a vigorous debate is why we reject Republican presidential contender John McCain's call to delay the first presidential debate scheduled for tonight in Oxford, Miss.
