Saturday Obama Phone Bankers -- Open Thread
by Seneca Doane
Sat May 03, 2008 at 02:48:48 PM PDT
I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but we should have open threads going on phone banking -- if nothing else than to encourage readers of this blog to get onto the phone.
But this is also a place to collect information and share tactics. So let me get right to that.
Right now, I'm calling Fort Wayne. I just spoke to a marvelous woman who's part of a two-votes-for-Obama couple. Because people have been hammered with calls, I've started asking whether they've been receiving a lot of calls this weekend, preparing to apologize if I'm disturbing her before moving onto the pitch.
She said that yes, she has been receiving a lot of calls this weekend -- but they have all been coming from Hillary Clinton's campaign.
I repeat: all the calls this woman has been receiving this weekend -- and I get the feeling it may be something like 4-6 from the sound of her answer -- have been from Hillary Clinton's campaign.
Get on the phone. Share your stories here. Let's not lose this election because we didn't call

Can anyone please explain this story about Peter Paul Vs Hillary Clinton? It's on the blogs now. It's about stuff on fraud and campaign finance against Hillary. Who is Peter Paul? Why is no one talking about this? Isn’t this a serious issue in a general election? This has been described as the campaign finance scandal of the new millennium and no one wants to discuss it. Does America not deserve better? I leave it to you guys to decide.

Glad to hear it's on the blogs. Unfortunately this is a story the press cannot cover due to an order the Clintons got from a Clinton-friendly judge. The order prohibits any media coverage under threat of an astronomical penalty.
The case itself has to do with campaign finance and receipt of funds from a/raised by a convicted felon. It was tried once before but got nowhere for lack of evidence. Evidence has been found and the trial is going forward again.

It has to do with her senate race and the campaign manager who was indicted for finance fraud but not convicted (Judge was appointed by Bill C).
There were questions about this hollywood fundraiser being legal by FEC standards and HRC denied knowing how much was raised. She ended up amending her FEC report amd paid a fine.
This fellow Paul (who organized it) felt he got screwed and the trial going on now is a CIVIL trial that has had trouble gaining any footing.
There is currenly a 'gag' type order on the proceedings which is why you won't see the MSM reporting on it. Paul also has a long criminal history of fraud and deception and things like that.

My understanding is that the case is not a criminal case this time however. It is a civil lawsuit and therefore the burden of proof is greatly reduced, definately in the favor of Peter F Paul. But yes, there is a gag order preventing the media to report the story and Hillary has been given a postponement till after the November election to testify. But currently Bill, Ed Rendell, Chelsea and others are giving depositions.

Peter Paul was with Marvel Comics before he started his own business. He hosted a fundraiser for Senator Clinton's campaign.
For some reason, the Clintons started bashing him and ruining his reputation (I don't truly understand the underlying rational). The lawsuit has something to do with this, the fundraiser and how the fundraiser was included in FEC filings (or not included).
Well, I know who Peter Paul is anyway!

CNN proclaimed Hilary to have won Pennsylvania by DOUBLE DIGIT numbers. The truth is that at no moment was she winning by more than 9.2 (which you can check at the SOS site in Penn). It must have been some of her claimed "base" who came with an idea that 9 is a double digit number. All this NCLB mathematics of CNN was just to help the mathematics of their donors. A lie for some green.
I wonder what they will twist today of Guam?
Warning: Any statements that Guam is unimportant politically will be considered unpatriotic, we have a base (a military one) in the Marianas.

I had to laugh -- because when I checked CNN's numbers for Guam, they actually had the numbers rounded DOWN -- making it look better for Hillary, whereas in PA they roulded UP to make it look like Hillary had won by ten points when it was actually closer to 9.......who can honestly say that the MSM is giving Obama a fair shake????????? The MSM and the other campaigns really do cater to less informed people....

Talk about BS. The PA primary was almost 2 weeks ago, but they're rubbing it in or trying to make it look more relevant than it is. Just the Clinton News Network in action.

They just ran the 134th Kentucky Derby and Big Brown won by 6 or 8 (lengths, that is). Looks like another Secretariat (Big Red); maybe a Triple Crown this year?
Sadly, the filly broke both ankles and had to be euthanized.
When will they ever learn not to run a filly with colts? Remember Ruffian?

Can anyone please explain this story about Peter Paul Vs Hillary Clinton? It's on the blogs now. It's about stuff on fraud and campaign finance against Hillary. Who is Peter Paul? Why is no one talking about this? Isn’t this a serious issue in a general election? This has been described as the campaign finance scandal of the new millennium and no one wants to discuss it. Does America not deserve better? I leave it to you guys to decide.

So, today I am 58--a white woman who should be, but cannot be, a Hillary supporter. In honor of my birthday, I just called 25 women in Indiana.
Here are the results:
6 for Obama
1 for McCain
4 declined to say
2 undecided (but seemed to be leaning Obama after we talked, as war was a big issue as well as health care and the uncivility of our politics)
4 messages left
1 no answer
5 wrong numbers
That's the most people I've talked to in any set of 25 calls and not one person claimed to be a strong HRC supporter, or even leaning HRC. If the "not interesteds" were for HRC, you wonder why they wouldn't proudly say so.
I told them all I wanted for my birthday was for Obama to win IN on Tuesday.
One woman, a strong supporter, had just gotten out of the hospital. I asked if she needed a ride, but said she has it all lined up for her sister to drive her on Tuesday and vote for Obama as well.
Off to dinner soon. Here's hoping Obama wins big in Guam and knocks it out of the park on Meet the Press tomorrow. It will be interesting to see who wins the ratings...as NBC and ABC are both free TV (though Russert will be re-broadcast on MSNBC as well).

I'm surprised Barack is spending Sat, Sun and Monday in Indiana. I hope the internal polling in NC is better than I've been seeing. If it's not then I think he's taking a big risk by staying out of the state the last 3 days. Bill C will be doing 9 stops in NC on Monday alone.
NC is the critical state on Tues. If he wins NC the nomination is ours reguardless of what happens in Indy - we've held serve in the state we are supposed to win and there is no change in the dynamic of a race which we are leading. Lose NC and it's a different story.

I do worry about NC a little bit because Barack has spent most of his time in IN.
I think their internal polling numbers must show them that they will win. If he had spent more time in NC he would have won by a bigger margin.
Barack is trying to close the gap with Hillary in IN. Barack will win NC and loose IN but get more delegates.

Hey Obama Family--
I just called Donatos and donated 3 veggie pizzas. Debbie the shift manager said they only have about 25 pizzas donated. The info is from another blogger's posting which I coped. Please re-post and send to your friends! They need all the orders by TODAY for tomorrow's event.
ATTENTION:
As you all may know by now I am trying to get bloggers to donate pizza (s) to this Sunday’s-Early Voting Event. The great idea came from steve or (S V T) a blogger, he suggested that we do pizza bombs by calling a various of volunteer HQ's (you will see which HQ I contacted). My initial call was to offer to buy lunch for the entire office they instead requested that I donate to this Sunday's cause. I took it upon myself to inform bloggers what is needed, who needs it, and where. Below you will see correspondence between me and Tammy (one of the assistant coordinators at the indianapolis HQ). She has sent me another email to request that bloggers call Donatos Pizza directly be sure to specify the location, details below. The day shift manager name is Jarod, the night shift manager is named Debbie. Please donate whatever you can a medium veggie pizza cost around $13. She said to order a variety of pizzas so far we have about 20 pizza’s set to be ordered. The pizza’s will need to be order by this Saturday. BTW the goal is 500 pizza’s. I update this message as I receive information from HQ, please review correspondence #3-thanks!

Jeanne, "who volunteers at the pleasure of the President" in Eugene, Oregon
May 3rd 2008 at 5:36 pm EDT
Hi there,
I just got back from a rural canvass, and it was time well spent. Most everyone I encountered was settled on their candidate. We were out reminding Obama supporters to turn in their ballots, and giving them information on what to do if they do not receive a ballot by May 7th.
One resident was undecided btw. Barack and HRC. She is a senior citizen, always votes democrat, and really wants to see a woman president in her lifetime. But there are things that trouble her, and it turns out that she really likes Barack! She feels like the pastor distractions have been incredibly unfair and she likes all our candidate's positions on issues. She just "has this loyalty thing going", she told me with tears in her eyes. My canvassing partner spoke about foreign policy, and how our opponent's recent statements about ""obliterating Iran" frightened her away from HRC. Then our new, fence-sitting friend said she thought Obama would have better luck with diplomacy than would HRC!
She ended up saying she had a lot of thinking to do, and was looking forward to having this agonizing decision over with. I invited her to climb on board the O-train, if not now, then definitely in the fall. She smiled warmly, thanked us for our visit, and said she was happy to see all the passion Obama supporters have brought to the party....
Sounds to me like she'll vote for Barack, what do you think?

Just got back from 3 hours of phone banking in CA. We were calling Indiana independents. The room was filled with volunteers making calls this weekend. Our results were very positive. They were 5:l for Barack over Clinton. The people are nice and fun to talk to. I made about 100 calls. I'll go back tomorrow with more friends from my active adult community. Please make calls!!

Great work, Diane (Julie?)! Just a tip, though: when you want to start your own thread, go to the top of the comments, where it says, "Write a comment on this Post," click on that and you can start your own thread. What you've done instead is "hijack" Jeanne's post about her canvassing. You're both doing outstanding work, and each post deserves its own attention. Or, since the two subjects are so related, with one supporter canvassing and the other calling, you could have tied the two together by acknowledging Jeanne's post about her canvassing, then talking about your great volunteer work calling.
For anyone who is new to blogging, I encourage you all to check out The Welcome Wagon, which wants to make blogging as easy and fun a process for you as possible. It explains about "hijacking," posting links, making a profile, requesting friends, etc and so forth:
Link
. Towards the top on the left-hand side you'll see a button, "join group." Go ahead and click on that if you'd like to join. You can also read the blogs without joining the group. The blogs are also on the left-hand side, towards the bottom. Here's the direct link to the blog, so you can see all the threads (all extremely helpful for new users):

Jeanne,
Sounds like she's boarding the train!! We really do have an affect on voters.
I met a gentlemen in Philly, who wore his bright red Marine hat proudly ('Semper Fi' in yellow) . Clearly, life had not been kind to him; his attitude and lack of a few teeth showed it.
"None of 'em are worth a damn" he snarled at me thru his front door as he snatched the GOTV lit from my hand.
I chalked it up as a "can't win 'em all" and kept on canvassing. As we canvassed again on e-day, I saw him walking down the street. Same red hat, same bad attitude. But as I approached and he saw who we were, he actually grinned slightly and gave a quick thumbs up.
"Ya'll were the only ones who visited me," he said.
YES.

Someone in the last thread mentioned that HRC has one commercial on TV? And that people are receiving mail from our campaign and not HRC's.
I'M SUSPICIOUS! Calm before storm? Not trying to be negative - rather realistic - Expect the best - but perhaps brace ourselves for her last minute tactics. The article below spells
out the things she's done in the past. Their campaign knows
how important it is to get their message out there this weekend.
And they're just counting on Hillary's appearances??
Can someone contact the ground force to see if they are seeing any kind of negative flyers, etc.???

What I loved about Barack's NH speech was his contained anger at being attacked as a hope monger.
He didn't mince his words, he showed his core belief in the american capacity to embrace the idea of change.
Unfortunately the closer you get to being the real harbinger of change, the more difficult it gets.
My theory is don't be afraid, keep being honest, and keep being straight with people.
They'll appreciate it and they will get it.

Thanks for the great news! Obama officially wins Guam! I do not care about the percentages...he won! Also, he will take more delegates when you include the superdelegates! Woo Hoo!!!! Obama is on fire!
Also, here in NC, people are fired up!!! My grandmother called all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and blessed them out! She told them that they need to vote and she wasn't playing. She was taking names and kicking butts!!! She would write down when they were voting and call them to make sure that they did it. She was trying to get everyone to vote early so that there would be no excuses. A lot of my cousins had never voted, but they were able to register and vote at the Early One-Stop Voting places.
I love my grandmother. She has a lot of pull in the family. She is a black version of Ms. Weiss from Wilmington, NC. If you haven't seen that clip, you must do so.
Amen to all of the people who voted early in NC. Now, make sure that you help out at the polls on Tuesday. I am going to help drive people to the polls. Obama has got to win BIG so that this race will come to a close.
Bring it home North Carolina!! Show the rest of America what we are made of!!!! Make Obama proud!!!
I love you guys!!!

That's why I posted the below comment on the last thread...as a challenge to all.
g+s+ (going positive, staying positive)
A few days ago there was a challenge out there to go positive for 24 hours on the blogs. I had joined the commitment, and even changed my name for the day...adding g+s+.
Let me tell you something...it was an interesting experience...here's why...there were several times that I was really tempted to add my comments about HRC or the media. However, I refrained, not so much because of the commitment...but because I had to live up to my new name. How would it seem if I were to rant and rave and vent...with "g+s+" being a part of my name?
There was actually a sense of calm over me that day. Everyone should try it.
Try changing your name...adding g+s+...you'll see that you won't be able to be negative. If you are a principled person, you will live up to your name.

I just paid $4.39 for gas. Outrageous. The war goes on. Ka-ching...
I think it is interesting how people hang up. They don't even have the courtesy or energy to say, hey, I'm not interested or I am busy at the moment. They just hang up. I do not take it personally for myself or the campaign.
I do not think they are disgusted with BO. I think they are hopeless, tired, worn out, over worked, underpaid, unappreciated, and F*cking pissed off about this nasty government and the media.
The calls are really important. Especially the undecided voters.
do you want 4 more years of the same?

For Callers: How Barack is Tougher (by far) than McCain or The Clintons |
Report to Admin
By
pgoCapeCod
May 3rd 2008 at 6:01 pm EDT
A Dozen ways Barack is Tough
Watch the campaigns carefully. They foreshadow the way that a leader will govern.
1. What's tough is growing up as a black child with a single white mom. (It's not exactly growing up elite.)
2. What's tough is deciding to campaign for President against a field of eight seasoned, talented politicians when you are the new comer and then beating all but one of your opponents. (So far.)
4. What's tough is building a community organization in every state in America and in every territory and with Americans abroad too.
5. What's tough is to do the work of understanding the tiny details of every single caucus state far in advance and to organize people to participate and to value their input. And then to win.
6. What's tough is to reach out across party, racial, ethnic, age, educational, religious and gender lines and include everyone in the campaign. Look at our campaign. No one else has done that, because it's too tough for them!
7. What's tough is to out fundraise all your opponents. By getting 1.5 million individual donors averaging less than $100 each. It's never been done before because it's too tough for our opponents to do. They say we can't change Washington because it's too tough. They are confused. It's too tough for the old politicians, but not for us. We have ALREADY changed the money game in politics.
8. What's tough is calling the other side personally to congratulate them when we lose, instead of sending a press release or a surrogate.
9. What's tough is to tell people what needs to be told not what they might want to hear.
10. What's tough is accepting and embracing all Americans as they are, with all our diversity and all of our differences. Even though it may lose some votes.
11. What's tough is facing down the media frenzy about the ex pastor issue by addressing the underlying issue of race in America.
12. What's tough is running a campaign of lifting up the nation, not a campaign based on tearing down the opposition. We stand for the upfront proposition that in America, we can show our patriotism or not show it as we each individually choose. No person or political party owns patriotism. We will never attack our opponents' patriotism.

I just finished 25 calls to Indiana. I encourage all who read this to do at least 25. I have called into PA and NC before, but now have done 50 to Indiana.
For those who are scared to call, as I am/was, I love people from Indiana! Just try it - they are great people there...
I had some genuinely undecided voters who were willing to engage with me. All of them were really friendly and thoughtful. As someone who also was undecided in the parking lot of the polling place on Feb. 5, I could definitely relate. I just shared some of the reasons I thought I made the wrong choice of voting for Clinton on Feb. 5 and why I was so impressed Obama's candidacy and campaign. I am so glad for this opportunity to reach out to other Americans and proud of myself for doing so.
I do have one tip - I write down the number and name of all undecided voters and plan to call them back - on my own, outside of the data base - on Monday night or Tuesday morning at 9 - just to see if they've made up their mind and that they get out to the polls.
I had one person who thought Obama was a muslim - in case you run into this - I assured him he was a Christian and referred him to the "Dreams From My Father" passage where he describes coming to accept Christ as his savior. I also told the voter to google "Goodbye to all that," which brings up an article by Andrew Sullivan, which helped bring me over to the Obama camp. In that article, Sullivan quotes the passage from Dreams... where he describes coming to Christ.
No one said they were a strong Clinton supporter. The people I actually spoke to (as opposed to answering machines) were truly trying to make up their minds.
So call... it's easier than you think it will be...

Thanks to the generosity of many who donated their valuable frequent flyer miles, we sent 29 out-of-state volunteers to TX / OH, 32 to PA, and another 17 to IN / NC.
This means ***1,950,000 MILES*** have been donated to date -- putting ***78 VOLUNTEERS*** on the ground, helping bring it home for Barack.
Our focus now turns to the next important states.
VOLUNTEERS: If you want to spend a week or more in an upcoming primary state, but can't afford to pay your own way, contact me and I'll try to match you with an airline ticket.
DONORS: It takes 25,000 miles for a ticket. So -- who's got at least 25,000 on the same airline which they'd like to donate toward making sure Barack Obama is our next President?
Step right up -- I'm getting requests almost daily from volunteers who want to help but can't afford the airfare. Donate now, please, so we can get these people where they're most needed. *** WE NEED MORE MILES! *** No miles? Perhaps you can help pay airfare.

Team Obama,
I just wanted to say that the pizzas are for the Obama volunteers who will be at the event tomorrow. I brought dinner at a sandwich shop for the 25 volunteers who were left last night in the Obama Indianapolis office. This is really legit. SvK does this all the time and it feels really good to know that these people are working very hard to get Senator Obama elected. If that means that I feed them dinner one night, then I would think we all agree that it is truly worth the money. You speak directly with the manager of the pizza place as I have and you google it to make sure you are comfortable with the information that you are being given. I am 1700 miles away in NV but it felt as if I was there last night. Tammy, who works in the Obama Indianapolis office, would really appreciate our help as they work their butts off on the ground to get Senator Obama elected. I just called Donatos and ordered 10 pizzas for OUR event tomorrow. We are all part of this campaign so helping in any way we can is greatly appreciated.
Have great day all!

And of course, the one with the most winning states and popular vote must get superdelegates endorsement as the final candidate but just before June 1st, not in the convention.

I saw the previews for the new ads running in Indiana and North Carolina. The Senator starts to talk about his days as a community organizer, but, what did he actually do? What concrete results did he have? He is still very much undefined in the eyes of the average voter. I also see Hillary making many more campaign stops everyday, just shaking hands. I am a big supporter of the Senator and so I hope this isn't taken as a rant. I am truly concerned about losing this race to Clinton.

Gerald,
I would refer you to both of Obama books, they describe what he did as a community organizer.
He organized and took on slumloards
He organized and took on school boards
He organized and took on corporations
What impressed me in reading the books is even though Obama would obviously be the most elequent spokesperson he always took a backseat at the meetings and had the partners, residents and employees lead and at media events he did the same think.
Very impressive.
You are right about the Clintons they will keep going till the last dog dies, and that is why the people on this blog need to keep calling.

Just to pile on here:
The book also shows consistency. BO's outlook and philosophy did not change as a result of running for President of the United States -- his outlook has consistently been the same: That change happens from the bottom-up. In addition, you will see (in both books) that he really believes in the real issues and thinks that minor differences are a distraction from the common good that results of working together.
On a side (and lighter) note: You will find that his language (choice of words) has been consistent despite the issue(s) or group of people that he is referring to. He has commonly used the words that are causing such an uproar now and he is probably learning that being the underdog candidate with the surprise standing comes at a great cost. He hits it right on the head -- it was no big deal (and even admirable) when he was the "new kid on the block" with some nice things to say about this country that has given him such great opportunity -- but when you run for the highest elected office in the U.S., set to become center stage of the world for our "turning point" as a nation -- well, that's different.
Next -- you will see something that I truly admire because I believe it too: He works, works, works - but not just for the sake of working, but for true, measurable results.
His books are the starting point for learning about the man. That's how he earned my vote - not for any other reason that many think minorities base their voting decisions. As a matter of fact, I was pro our opponent until our researched him and where he stood on the issues - happy reading.

Now, as to your concern, I believe that Barack does better with those who are only 'casually' invested in politics by dispersing sound bytes...sad but true, we are a society of sound bytes. he either has to spend his time telling in general or in specific, and either way he gets dogged; hopefully this way he ALSO garners votes!!

Gerard, you broke rules #2 and #3 so ante up!
--------
You know Bill Maher's "new rules?" Al from The Field made some rules too, I modified them to adapt here. My edits are in caps... ;-)
Link
------
This blogger now institutes simple steps to penance for commenters that regress into “beautiful loser” mentality. These apply to you no matter who your candidate is. They are simple and easy rules for engaging in political struggle.
1. Any time you cite a “national tracking poll” as supposed evidence of your candidate’s chances of victory disappearing, you must make 25 get-out-the-vote phone calls on that candidate’s behalf. (Don’t ask me how to do that: consult the web page of your candidate for instructions!)
[****AND DONATE TO BARACK--any mention of Zogby, Rasmussen, et. al. is worth $25 for starting the post****]
2. Any time you fret aloud about your candidate losing an upcoming primary or caucus, and worry about alleged grave consequences (in the face of the facts that all remaining candidates have lost some contests and yet they march on), you must make 50 calls to voters in every state you mention. [***AND DONATE TO BARACK, $25 per fret per supporter***]
3. Any time you complain aloud about what your candidate’s campaign or staff is not doing you must give at least $10 to that candidate, to make it possible for them to do more. [***DONATE $25 TO BARACK because $10 is to light of a penalty for telling Barack, Axelrod, Plouffe, etc. what they must/need to/should do...***]
-----
Al had 4 and 5, so you can check that out at the link.
Just think how much money we could raise by honoring these 3 "rules"!!! Hit that red "donate now" button at top right corner if you want to indulge yourself in any of the above.

Today I made my first 10 political calls ever. English is my third language, so I speak with some accent. The “accent fear” was the biggest one I had to face before I clicked the button “make calls.” (I have made my decision not to take it personally if somebody will hang up on me.) Then, I was worried that I don’t know enough about where BO stands on the issues. To deal with this, I had to remind myself that for the past 4 months I’ve been listening to Barack’s speeches endlessly, so this is not a serious excuse. Well, do I really have enough time to make these calls? --- I was looking for another excuse. Of course I do! I can cut off on time I spend reading these lovely blogs.
So this morning I made my first call NC.
My first call - left a message. My second call was a bit luckier – a person answered the phone, but as soon as told her that I’m a volunteer at BO campaign, she hang up on me (yes, I had to remind myself not to take it personally.) Then, I had a short & sweet conversation with a republican who said he respects BO, but his “hero” is JMc. Briefly I talked to one of HC supporters who has already casted her vote for “experience.” Then I left a few more messages. No “alive” conversation with BO supporter today :(, but I hope to catch up on this tomorrow!
I have to report that for a shy person with a funny Eastern European accent to make these calls was a really big stretch. Also it was a perfect practice of facing my own fears. I cannot make more calls today, but tomorrow I will and, hopefully, I will talk to someone who directly or indirectly will remind me, “Yes We Can!”
And I'm glad I did it today!

Operation Anti-Chaos: The Narrative on “White Voters” Is Fiction
By Al Giordano
I turn on the TV, read the political columnists (and a significant number of analytically-challenged bloggers, too) and all I hear is a bunch of white folk prattling on about their favorite narrative: “Obama’s losing white voters!”
They’ve swallowed the Clinton racially-obsessed spin, hook, line and sinker. Some, because they are gullible, haven’t an original idea in their little pea brains, and follow the pack of what everybody else is talking about. Others, because they like to toss around knowing falsehoods. Nary a superdelegate can go on Fox News without being berated by an anchorperson screeching (this is pretty close to an exact quote): “But your duty as a superdelegate is to select the most electable and that’s Hillary Clinton!” That these anchorpersons are Republican partisans openly cheering for Senator Clinton is our first clue of the game afoot. One of the major successes of Rush Limbaugh’s Operation Chaos is that it has got all the right-wing pundits and reporters marching lockstep behind the effort to give Clinton enough oxygen to keep slashing away at Senator Obama, who remains the prohibitive likely Democratic nominee.
And when Clinton wins state primaries that, because of demographics, she was always going to win - last week, Pennsylvania and next week, Indiana - they then wave that event up like a blood-soaked flag as proof of their narrative: See? See? We told you so! White people won’t vote for Obama!
Wait. The numbers show that the cynical effort to turn the 2008 campaign into a race riot has hurt the popularity of one candidate among an important demographic, and it’s not Barack Obama:
Not since Ronald Reagan has an American presidential candidate withstood such an assault in the media and seen his popularity not hurt by it, but, rather, galvanized by it. That’s what is meant, in politics, by the term “Teflon.”
Don’t let yourself get upset when some idiot repeats the false media narrative. Don’t plead with them to tell the truth (they won’t; remember, they’re either stupid or dishonest). Mock them. Ridicule them. Expose them as the lightweights they are showing themselves to be, with all the confidence that understanding the hard data ought to provide you.
Let Operation Anti-Chaos begin!
Please check out the full facts and data. Read the full article pass it along. Reignite the fire.

I agree - this needs to get OUT THERE! Bill Moyers said something I had never heard - the church was the only safe place for a black man to express rage at the unequal systems during Jim Crow era (and perhaps since?). Moyers eloquently and calmly describes this double standard for Barack regarding his church while ignoring the right wing's history regarding "family values." These last few months that was my first thought: hypocrites! what about decades of right-wing "Christians" who advocated Jim Crow system, KKK and sided with the Republican party (Nixon's Southern Strategy), etc? Coming from Bill Moyers this is powerful.
We are building a bridge and helping America cross it regarding AA candidates and traditional history regarding black churches. We need to gently take America through this process to pave the way for future, gifted AA politicians. Every pioneer paves a pathway. This is our time.
I'd love to see this Moyers commentary in MSM.

Don't forget to make some calls to North Carolina too!
I cannot make anymore as I have to answer my own phone today -- work does call occasionally -- and it would be rude to say to someone I am calling for Senator Obama "Hey, wait a minute, I really do have to take this other call." My phone is ringing about once every two minutes -- I guess at least I am busy!
I did make calls this morning and everyone was very pleasant. I made calls to Indiana and North Carolina.
If people hang up, it usually means they think you are a solicitation, by the way. Nobody likes phone solicitations. I never take that seriously.
We can do this -- I have no doubt. There is absolutely no end to the potential of the American people. I have always known this, I just forgot that it could have any application to politics! Funny how that is, I listened about the Progressive Movement from my grandparents for years -- especially the part having to do with Farmers -- and yet, somehow I forgot all about it as an adult, that is until NOW. Yes we can!!!

I worked my way through college as a horse trainer. I trained Arabs for endurance racing. The problem with Thoroughbreds is that as speed was bred into them, their bones got too light. No matter how much you like horse racing (I detest it) you have to admit it is cruel on horses.
They are trained and owned for one thing; racing. If they aren't successful on the track, they're pretty much discarded, as jockey club horses are useless for anything else.

Kimberly it truly was amazing! And one of my best friends here , who happens to have been born and bred Chicago just put her head down and cried!
I have to admit I had tears in my eyes as well.
I think the thing that moved me the most wasnt the fact that the Americans (I am American as well) around me were saying it, it was the fact that all these young Swiss kids and Swiss adults from my age bracket( 40+) were joining in!
The Swiss are totally pulling for Barack. It is their sincere hope he wins. He offers them hope as well. Hope that they can once again love America as they did before the entire world was Bushwacked for the past 8 years!
It is hard to live in a foreign country and not be able to attend any of the rallys and town hall meetings. I guess this was as close as I am going to get to feeling what you all at home have the priviledge to experience . Please cherish it if you are able to see and hear Barack in person.
You have no idea how blessed you all are!
Huggles and Love,

I just got back from a couple hours of phonebanking.
A lot of people weren't home, and I got a lot of wrong numbers. Of those whom I spoke to, the biggest issue by far was jobs. People were very frustrated that they couldn't find jobs. One man said his company was going through another round of offshoring right now.
Healthcare and the price of gas were also key. Nobody I talked to was particularly interested in the "gas tax gimmick" - they were tired of the oil companies making record profits on the backs of American consumers. One gentleman suggested that all refineries be federalized so the government could control that link in the "pipeline".
Most folks were very polite, even if they didn't support Barack. I had a handful of women hang up on me when I asked for a man's name (ex-spouses?)...and I ran into a couple of diehard racists, who cursed me in very colorful language and used the n-word with great frequency.
But - the room was filled with callers, and the bell kept going off as we identified (or converted) Obama supporters. Probably my best conversation was speaking with the mother of a young sailor who was deployed on a Navy carrier (the young man was the name on my list). I'm also in the military, and had lived where her son had been stationed, so we had a great conversation. I'm pretty sure the woman was not even a Democrat, but we found common ground quickly and agreed on the issues we felt were important to address.
I probably went through about 75 names - keep up the good work everyone! It is making a difference.

Press Release in 2005 by Senator Evan Bayh:
Bayh Calls for Increased Oversight of Foreign Takeovers with National Security Concerns

Senator points to GAO report criticizing Administration failures to protect national security interests
Excerpt:
Washington-- U.S. Senator Evan Bayh today called for greater oversight of foreign takeovers during a Banking Committee hearing on a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report he requested to explore concerns over foreign takeovers of American companies with national security implications. Bayh requested the study after a commission charged to oversee such takeovers failed to stop the foreign purchase of an Indiana company responsible for making 85 percent of the nation's smart bomb magnets.
"Foreign investment can be a good thing, but in order for that to be true, we must make sure that the parts of our economy that impact national security are protected," Senator Bayh said. "The committee responsible for providing this protection does not have a good track record, as I saw myself when it allowed an Indiana company that made smart bomb magnets to be purchased by a foreign business. When it comes to protecting our national security interests, we should be doing more, not less."
During the hearing, Bayh questioned officials from the GAO for their opinions regarding the current practice that allows the private industry to decide when and if to report takeovers with potential national security concerns...
The report Bayh requested takes a critical look at the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which is responsible for reviewing the national security implications of foreign takeovers of domestic companies. In particular, the report argues that the way CFIUS interprets the legislation may limit its effectiveness. As an example, the report cites how the Treasury and some other departments that make up CFIUS use such a narrow definition of what constitutes a national security threat that as a result, they allow too many questionable purchases to take place without sufficient review.
Senator Bayh, along with Senators Shelby and Sarbanes, first requested the GAO report in 2003 after an Indiana company called Magnequench closed thanks to a 1995 decision by CFIUS to approve a Chinese consortium's takeover. At the time, Magnequench made 85 percent of the magnets used to guide U.S. smart bombs.

Early Indiana turnout heavy in strong Obama counties
RICK CALLAHAN | May 2, 2008 07:21 PM EST |
INDIANAPOLIS — Early voting in Indiana could offer some encouragement to presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who needs a victory in its upcoming primary after a tough few weeks on the campaign trail.
Obama victories in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on May 6 could help him regain momentum in his nomination fight against Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has been on the defensive because of comments by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and his own comments about people in small towns growing bitter.
About 20 percent of the 127,000-plus absentee ballots received as of early Friday were cast in three Indiana counties _ Marion, Monroe and Lake _ that political observers believe Obama is strongly favored to win.

The Huffington Post | April 30, 2008 10:28 AM
Politico reports:
Capitol Hill insiders say the battle for congressional superdelegates is over, and one Senate supporter of Barack Obama is hinting strongly that he has prevailed over Hillary Rodham Clinton.
While more than 80 Democrats in the House and Senate have yet to state their preferences in the race for the Democratic nomination, sources said Tuesday that most of them have already made up their minds and have told the campaigns where they stand.
"The majority of superdelegates I've talked to are committed, but it is a matter of timing," said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.). "They're just preferring to make their decision public after the primaries are over. ... They would like someone else to act for them before they talk about it in the cold light of day."
Obama currently holds an 18-13 lead among committed superdelegates in the Senate, while Clinton holds a 77-74 lead in the House. Asked which way the committed-but-unannounced superdelegates are leaning, McCaskill -- who has endorsed Obama -- said: "James Brown would say, 'I Feel Good.'"

BREAKING NEWS: Initial results show Obama wins by 7 votes
Pacific News Center Staff Reporter 04.MAY.08
9:00 a.m. Guam – Uncertified numbers from the Democrat nominating committee show that Senator Barack Obama has won the island’s caucus by seven votes. Obama led Senator Hillary Clinton by a constant 7 percentage points leading into the results of Dededo, which had the largest turnout on Guam.
Josh Tenorio from the Obama camp is concerned about the results, particularly because of the large number of spoiled ballots. Both he and Clinton representative Rena Borja are confident the nominating committee will take that into consideration before certifying the results.
Borja says she isn't planning on challenging the results, instead choosing to court the uncommitted Super-delegates: Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo and Party Chair-elect Pilar Lujan.
The results will now await the approval of the Central Executive Committee.

Kerry Rips MSNBC On Wright: 'You People Need To Let Go Of This'
April 30, 2008 04:41 PM
Today, John Kerry officially became the 87,436th person to receive one of the three or four versions of the same Reverend Wright question MSNBC has been asking everyone it comes in contact with, including their plants and pets. Kerry, who's maybe a little sensitive toward these sorts of issues, wasn't having it, and his displeasure manifested itself in the closest thing Kerry does that resembles losing his ever-loving mind. That said, it sort of worked! Kerry changed the conversation all right, but Alex Witt opted to just ask one more question ("I would like to get your concerns about the unity of the Democratic party as the Republican party was able to coalesce around its nominee, John McCain. How concerned are you?") before shutting the whole thing down.

Good question. We have been voting this way for about 10 years, and it is working well. There are official voting drop boxes set up in convenient locations in each community, all around the state. They look like the blue post office boxes, but are painted white, and bear large signs designating their purpose. They are secure, and tamper-proof.
Voters can drop ballots (placed in provided secrecy envelopes) in drop boxes, stamp-free, or place postage on the ballot and put them in the mail. Ballots must be received by 8pm on May 20 though, so all media outlets inform voters of the last day for snail mailing, to prevent late ballots. After that date, ballots must be placed in drop boxes or hand delivered to elections offices.

Hi Julia,
Thanks for posting about the different process here in Oregon. I agree that folks might assume we vote on May 20th, when in actuality many people are voting this weekend!!! I will repeat this:
WE VOTE BY MAIL!!!!
So GOTV efforts need to be sustained for about 2.5 weeks in Oregon!!! Those ballots are just sitting around the house, gathering dust, and need to be filled out for Barack, and delivered properly. Please don't think Oregon is a done deal. We are not. Every vote counts, and every delegate counts. We need to run up the delegate count to keep our opponent from having ANY excuse to take this to the convention!!!
So focus on Indiana and NC until Tuesday, then aim those phone calls, surrogates and volunteers this way!!! We can do this!
BARACK IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!
YES WE CAN IN OREGON!!

Feminists for Peace and Barack Obama!
THE PETITION
In the coming elections, it is important to remember that war and peace are as much "women's issues" as are health, the environment, and the achievement of educational and occupational equality. Because we believe that all of these concerns are not only fundamental but closely intertwined, we will be casting our vote for Senator Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee for President of the United States.
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, we have watched with shock and sorrow as our country has become mired in war. The resulting tragedy for our own soldiers, their immediate families and for the people of Iraq has been incalculable.
Less obvious, but no less grave has been the impact on our domestic institutions and economy. With a defense budget of half a trillion dollars and expenditures now averaging $12 billion a month for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, resources that might have been used for health care, housing, education, repair of infrastructure, relief of poverty and community development have been drained away.
We urgently need a Presidential candidate, who understands that "pre-emptive" attacks on other countries and the reliance on military force have diminished rather then strengthened our national security. And we urgently need a Presidential candidate whose first priority is to address domestic needs. We do not believe that Senator Hillary Clinton is that candidate.
We also recognize that the election of Barack Obama would be another historic achievement and that his support for gender equality has been unwavering.
Yet it is noteworthy that at a time when this position was politically unpopular and when he was aiming for national office, Barack Obama opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq and has spoken out against the war ever since. This puts him in a far better position to articulate a clear challenge to a Republican opponent.
We are also moved by the positive tone of the Obama campaign, the tremendous energy it has released across the country, the dramatic engagement of young people and the impetus for change that his candidacy embodies.
We are speaking out now because we cannot afford to elect another President who will continue the aggressive, interventionist policies of the present.

Superdelegates must follow the will of voters
Demand that the Democratic Party defend democracy
Leaders of the Democratic Party are playing a dangerous game -- risking the credibility of the party to hand Hillary Clinton the nomination against the will of voters. Heading down this path means disenfranchising millions of voters and legitimizing a campaign strategy that has displayed a clear pattern of race baiting and divisive politics.
Join me in demanding that Democratic Party leadership and superdelegates uphold the integrity of the party and listen to the voice of voters.
Click right here right now to sign your name to this letter:

Here is the text of the message to send to the Democratic Party's leadership:
Attention: DNC Chair Howard Dean, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and superdelegates:
Dear party leaders:
The Democratic Party is playing a dangerous game and I'm writing to ask that you bring it to an end.
It has come to my attention that elected officials and party leaders are actually considering using their status as "superdelegates" to hand the nomination to Hillary Clinton against the will of voters, an action that would disenfranchise millions.
Following this course would be a shocking attack on voting rights and democracy. It would also give your seal of approval to an "electability" strategy executed by stoking race-based fear and division among voters. We expect that from the Republicans; we fight them on it every year. But now the leadership of the Democratic Party is poised to cosign this strategy of division and disenfranchisement. This could be the worst mistake the party has ever made, yet it's being talked about as a legitimate way for this campaign to end.
The voters who have come out in record numbers to participate in the Democratic Party won't allow this to happen, and as the most visible leaders of the party, you must reject the idea that the nomination can be won with a strategy that preys on racism, sows division, and disenfranchises millions of voters.

When I saw these pictures I was just struck by how amazing this couple is and how hard they are working to improve this country. I think that sometimes we see politicians whose supporters, staff and surrogates work harder than they do, I am glad that this is not the case for Senator and Mrs. Obama.

I've put together some ready-to-print 8½ by 11 inch signs made for the upcoming contests. Print them out and tape them up in the windows of your house, tape some up in your car, give them to other supporters or use them as signs! Email your friends and family asking them to do the same!
