This afternoon, over 2,000 residents of Haverford, Pennsylvania gathered at Haverford College to hear Michelle Obama speak about Barack and his campaign.
Michelle spoke about the grassroots movement of the campaign. She said:
They told us we couldn't raise money. But they didn't know that Barack was going to change the face of presidential fundraising forever. We wanted to reach out to regular folks, so we approached fundraising in a way that had never been done before. We knew that $23 is as important as $2300. And now we have more then 1 million individual people donating – we are making history. The American people are hungry for change in a way that we haven't seen before because people are engaged in a way they haven't been before. They bring their kids to rallies, watch presidential debates, and talk about pledged delegates and superdelegates.
I am the product of a working class upbringing. My father was a city worker, a stationary fireman his entire life. My mother stayed at home because back then you could. You could raise a family of four on a single city salary. My brother and I went to public school around the corner. When people look at me, I want them to see what an investment in public education can look like. I want people to understand that I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the steady schools and those teachers. I saw hard work and sacrifice up close. My father had MS and contracted it in the prime of his life. But despite his disability, he got up everyday and went to work with no complaints. The fact that he got up and sacrificed allowed my brother and I to reach for the dreams that we had. My mother and father never went to college but were able to send two kids to Princeton. And most Americans are just like my parents. They just want to know that if they get up and go to work everyday that they will be able to take care of their families. And he wanted to know that after a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice he could put his feet up with a little dignity. And that's what most people want.
Michelle encouraged everyone to get involved for the upcoming primary. She told the crowd that she and Barack needed them to get out and vote and bring change to Pennsylvania.
Jeri, Avise, Helen, and Sheila from Haverford were excited to see Michelle and show their support for the Obamas. Helen told me:
He gives us hope. He can make a change. He will unite us with the world and bring America together. He has new ideas and we're ready for change.
