What is going on with Obama's campaign? John McCain is relentlessly attacking and Barack has taken a mighty hit in national and key battleground state polls. Since his trip overseas, the campaign seems flat-footed and has not been at all effective at finding a very tough, consistent message to counter McCain. The Repubs are once again painting the dems as weak, indecisive, unpatriotic ... and it's working. Barack promised he wouldn't be Swift-Boated, but based on what I've seen of him lately, he'd doing nothing to stem the downward tide.

Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 12:52 PM

Barack Obama took it to McCain today at his VFW speech. He said that he will not allow anybody to question his love for America. He also said he would love to know how McCain plans on following Bin Laden into the gates of hell when he was against taking Bin Laden out when he had the chance.
There is a new LA Times poll out that has us slightly ahead 45-43. What I found as very encouraging was the fact that we lead the independent vote 47-36. 78% of our supporters are enthusiastic vs 61% of McCains. I say its all about GOTV efforts. Oh well that's my scoop.

I seem to recall on the forum that McOsama actually said he knew where this mean guy was. Well, if he knows, why hasn't he shared that intell with those who need it to actually catch the guy. You know, like the president, the pentagon oh I don't know anyone willing to go get him and take both Osama and McCain to hell since he said he was willing to go there!

I think it would so great if Senator Obama not only announced his pick for VP but also made a preemptive strike on the rest of this campaign by announcing his list of folks that is plans to put in his Cabinet.
Now that would take the media by storm & send everyone in a tizzy spin for the next 77 days as the MSM & McStaleMate camp had to try & figure out a way to slam all of these folks at once!
Never been done before & it would show that Senator Obama is Ready Before Day 1 !!!!!!!

No, only in the 1970's and he meant in combat. Webb saw alot of horrible things in Vietnam and this may have shaped his views then. Since that time Hillary Clinton and Claire McCaskill have vouched for him. He has also supported women in the military by advancing women’s roles and broadening their responsibility in the United States military after the 1970's, and was in fact endorsed by Military Women during his run . I was a military women (served 10yrs) and I support Jim Webb and endorse him if he is the VP.

Tom Ridge stated that Mccain has never done that and Obama needs to stop accusing Mccain of doing that. Wolfie never showed the clip of Mccain saying Obama would rather win the election than win the war and that his presidential ambition is before the good of the country. There is nothing worse than not being able to even get the money to move where there may be more jobs. I remember a time when we didn't have the money to buy a stamp to mail a job application. My heart goes out to your community.
Our federal government and state governments need to work together to rebuild the infrastructure and provide jobs to tide people over while they retrain or get enough to move.
Better still would be incentives for building plants HERE with penalties for moving essential industry out of country.

Just heard on CNN that McCain’s biggest supporters are those over 50 and men.
Well, when I went canvassing and at the River Rhythms concert, I ran into a few couples in the age range, the woman was a definite Obama supporter, and the man wasn’t. In each case the woman was working on their partner to get the to change their mind.
One woman even said that they would offer to mail both their ballots and accidentally/on purpose lose their “man’s” ballot on their way to the mailbox ;)
Oh, here in Oregon, we vote by mail, so about two weeks prior to the elections we receive our ballots in the mail and we can turn them in any time up and until the polls close here.
So, I was thinking that the next couple I ran into that was in the same position, I might whisper something into the woman’s ear, in regards to her over 50 cohorts, what they are planning to do if their man refuses to vote for Obama :)
Actually, most of the men were not pro-McCain, but they were republican, I felt that they were actually torn between what they want out of a president and their party line. So I would like to see a poll on this exact issue – I think it would be fun to know if this is more universal than just my own experiences on the matter.

Early in the spring, Barack Obama asked John Kerry for his advice on the vice presidential selection process. Kerry was too happy to oblige. Choose someone, he told Obama, that you trust completely. Don't expect the process to build trust. Don't choose someone with the expectation that you'll develop a trust.
This was, of course, the lesson that Kerry learned from 2004; he thought he could trust John Edwards; Edwards had promised Kerry that he deserved Kerry's trust; Edwards promised Kerry that he would be his full and complete partner.

REPOST from last thread...
Why I am not worried about the polls:
Barack Obama is the first black nominee for President of the United States. He is currently above the required 270 electoral votes needed to win. He is implementing a 50-state strategy and is already competitive in states like Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Indiana. He is raising an unprecidented amount of $50+ million a month. He has over 2 million donors and 1 million grassroots volunteers. He went abroad and was treated as a Head of State by major allies in the Middle East and Europe. He was right about Iraq, right about Afghanistan, right about Pakistan, and had the right approach to the Russia-Georgia conflict. The polls are tighting, but the fall campaign hasn't even begun. This is the transition period between the primary and the general. We have the money, the talent, the people, and the right candidate. We will win in November!

How's this for a possible scenario to break the news about veep? Keith Olberman is cut it on it early so he can do his show this evening (it's pretaped by a couple of hours)...and he breaks the news. A wonderful nod to Keith by the Obama camp. We get our texts and emails just before his show airs...and it's AL GORE! There is no sense in waiting to get it out there because our campaign will be absolutely dominating the MSM and there is NOTHING negative to spin about an Obama/Gore ticket. Personally, I love it!

Go ahead. Let yourself get all discouraged for half a week. It's good for you. Rest up.
When you are ready to come back you will be rested and ready to go again. You finally come to the conclusion, I don't care what they say, I don't care what happens, I am standing for Obama.
The nay-sayers like to tout the possble Bradley effect and all that...and I am saying think of the caucus! So many of us came there shaking in our shoes, thinking we would have to stand alone for Obama while other people wondered about us.
And what happened. EVERY SINGLE caucus state practically we won by hoards. It was amazing.
If there was to be a Bradley effect it would have showed up at the caucuses where you have to stand up in front of racists, God, and everybody.
And we found we were not alone. We almost ALL wanted Barack. He deserves this nomination...against all odds, and he deserves this Presidency.
Rest up, and then let's go get 'em. Watching the livestream above, I could tell Barack is getting HIS second wind. We will get ours.

REPOST from other thread...
I think Bill Clinton caused the recent drop in polls for Obama. How? By being unwilling to say that Obama was qualified to be President [or ready to lead] at the exact time that McCain was calling him an empty-headed celebrity. It was discussed in the media for days, and would definitely impact people that were already on the fence. Barack is maintaining support among indepedents and losing support among democrats. Does anyone really think that McCain impacted democratic voters? Of course not. Does anyone think that Bill didn't know that McCain was already questioning Obama's readiness to lead? Coincidence... I think not!
Just food for thought. Obama will still win for all the reasons I stated in my post regarding the fall campaign.

"I'm not the guy".
I'm not sure what else he can say? "Yes, its me?" or "I'll have more to say tomorrow?" At least Biden is proving to be concise and can shut his mouth when he has to.
I guess we won't be hearing anything soon about VP.
I am disappointed. We need to get this over with in the right way or else Hillary's people will cause more damage next week.
The polls have to start rising before the convention. Saturday is too late.
If McCain chooses Lieberman, then I am afraid Obama will lose without Biden as VP.

I can’t believe they are now saying that Obama isn’t as good at economy issues but Hillary and her husband are, so that would be a good reason to give Hillary the VP spot.
OK, all of the journalist and news media people have been hypnotized or on drugs or both. Please or Please, someone get real information to these idots!

I volunteered at an event, though, and I will tell you that if you have nothing better to do (if you don't find a ticket), GO ANYWAY!!!!!
I went to a 2500 person town hall and there were at least 25 extra tickets from people who had extras. NOBODY who didn't have a ticket was turned down!! (I was working tickets, alas...)
It's worth a shot, if you don't find someone who has a spare.

Not sure if that is still the policy but I had friends that did not get in and got to shake his hand while waiting out in the cold anyway.

It seems that he is meeting with or near all the top choices this week - only adding fuel to the fire. This way he dominates the airwaves a week before his pick, and the week after. McCain will announce after DNC convention and won't have nearly the same amount of buzz.

Although Obama is only ahead 45-43 in the LA Times poll, he is up by 11% among Independents. That should be enough to put him up by 14% overall.
Link
The problem, once again is not getting enough Democratic support. Once again it is the age 60+ and/or Hillary problem.
We just need a good Natl. Security VP and need it fast and then Democrats will fall in line.
Barack has delayed way too long, IMO, on selecting a Natl. Security VP. They must be struggling inside HQ. Apparently no pick will come soon. I don't know what they are waiting for unless Obama still can't make that decision.

Lots of folks know how to disagree in a civil manner. The folks who assume that you have to hate someone for disagreeing with you stir nothing but pity in me.
If you talk to someone long enough, you'll find a hundred things you disagree on. But if you listen long enough, you'll hear that you agree on more things, in the long run.

Schwarzenegger I am hoping will become an Obamacan, one of Obama's Republican or Independent endorsers.....
Schwarzenegger has stated that he would love to be Obama's energy Secretary in his cabinet....
Schwarzenegger, as a Republican would face great consequences within his own party for defying it...He has already endorsed McCain, but his wife is a huge Obama supporter....
He would be a great surrogate, he is charismatic, well liked....
He is in my top four "OBAMACANS" hopefuls..
1) Mike Bloomberg
2) Colin Powell
3) Ron Paul
4) Arnold...
My concern is what strings would be tied...Congress introduced a bill last year that would allow a non-american who has lived here for 35 years to run for President....Arnold is in that group..Congress didn't pass it, Arnold was sort of the reason it was introduced....Will Arnold want Obama to pass this bill which might ultimately ensure we have a Republican President in 4 or 8 years...
I actually support him as Energy Secretary..We can find smart people to work under him to help develop policies but we also need to:
1) Change peoples behavior
2) Get other countries to follow..
Arnold has the charisma nad media focus he could get exposure for the sacrifices that need to be made, he could make the programs get exposure, he could get Americans rallying behind these new programs..
Also he is LOVED in China and Asia and could work with them to follow similar progams...Even if we reduce oil consumtpion 75%, it will only reduce global warming by 10% by the time China expands use of oil....
The most popular Republican Govenror (Arnold) endorsing Obama is huge....Bloomberg would give him credibility on the economy and with Independents....Ron Paul with Republiacns, Libertarians, fiscal conservatives, and Powell with foreign policy..
Arnold appeals to the everyday guy...the low informaiton, uneducated voter would b the most excited...

well, well, here i've been working in Chicago, not able to get on the blog... and look at all this great VP talk... reading it, plus reading major and not so major news stories about the pick, the meter has narrowed the choices down to:
1. Biden
2. Gore
The meter thinks that Obama will let us know tomorrow morning via text, and have a major rally in Illinois on Saturday to 'come full circle' to signify the start of the GE battle.
The meter thinks that Obama should pick Gore because this raises everything to a whole other level - and will make the rally on Saturday one heck of a kickoff.
The meter will be happy with Biden, but feels the dramatic build up we are witnessing would not be happening if it were such a known and expected pick like Biden.
One again, the meter appreciates your input and really has no idea who will be picked....

1) Check out zogby.com/50state We are actually up 2 points when Nader/Barr are included.
2) We have the endorsement of course of Evan Bayh whether he is VP or not but the interesting thing will be whether Obama can pursuade the other Senator, a Republican, Dick Lugar to become and Obamacan, a Republican supporter/surrogate... Lugar is a close friend, someone Obama worked with closely on a major nuclear proliferation bill they wrote together...and he is hitting Lieberman hard on his attacks on Obama....
If Obama were to have Lugar as a surrogate that would gain huge ground with Republican voters in Indiana (and have an impact nationally) would show bi-partisanship.... Bayh was a popular governor....And a VP like Schweitzer would have great appeal in Indiana's farm and rural areas...would gain a few poitns.
My thought process.
An Indiana campaign with:
Pres Nominee - Barack Obama
VP nominee -Schweitzer
Senators: Evan Bayh AND Dick Lugar
Former President Bill Clinton
Former Candidate Hillary..
Republican Senator Chuck Hagel..
I think with this combination we can pack a pretty hard punch and launch an ambitious voter registration effort that will gives us another 4 points....Then bring this whole team to Ohio the next week...
Dick Lugar is one of my favorite hopeful Obamacans...doesn't make my top four..
1) Bloomberg
2) Powell
3) Ron Paul
4) Schwarzenegger

I really believe that the announcement will come tonight or tomorrow night.
In order to capitalize on the largest audience, an early morning Eastern Time announcement (to take advantage of the morning shows) would have to exclude other time zones. You can't send a text to hundreds of thousands of Californians at 4am Pacific.
The ideal time would be...well...right about now. 8pm Eastern - Prime Time in Eastern and Central Time Zones, and just in time for the evening news in the Mountain and Pacific time zones.
While I'm posting - won't someone please help me reach my fundraising goal?

Thanks in advance, and keep the faith!

It's been a while since I've been on here, but I have a question that is bothering me. I've looked online a bit and can't find any info that seems even remotely objective so I thought I'd ask all of you. Not that you're objective necessarily but at least you'd be opinionated my way! :) Someone brought up to me recently the issue of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act. As I understand it, this was a bill that was put forth in the Illinois legislature. The bill stated that a baby that was alive after a botched late-term abortion would be given full rights as an infant.....or something like that. What I've heard is that Barack was the only one in the Illinois legislature that voted against it. Does anyone know anything about this? Any info any of you have about this would be appreciated! Thanks!

From what I understand it had some wording in it that would have directly challenged Roe V Wade. Had the wording been taken out Obama would have voted for it. I am not intimately informed but this is what I have gathered along the way.

Sen. Obama addresses this claim in a recent interview with Relevant magazine:
“The email rumor that’s been floating around is that somehow I’m unwilling to see doctors offer life-saving care to children who were born as a result of an induced abortion. That’s just false. There was a bill that came up in Illinois that was called the “Born Alive” bill that purported to require life-saving treatment to such infants. And I did vote against that bill.
The reason was that there was already a law in place in Illinois that said that you always have to supply life-saving treatment to any infant under any circumstances, and this bill actually was designed to overturn Roe v. Wade, so I didn’t think it was going to pass constitutional muster.
Ever since that time, emails have been sent out suggesting that, somehow, I would be in favor of letting an infant die in a hospital because of this particular vote. That’s not a fair characterization, and that’s not an honest characterization. It defies common sense to think that a hospital wouldn't provide life-saving treatment to an infant that was alive and had a chance of survival.” [1]
Senator Obama has stated repeatedly that he supported the federal version of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which passed Congress and addressed this same issue. Senator Obama opposed a state version of this legislation in Illinois because there was an existing state law that had been on the books for 20 years that already required such medical care, it was drafted in a way that would have rendered it unconstitutional, and it was even opposed by the Illinois State Medical Society. i'm worried about the fall in barack's favorability ratings. it seems to me the tightening in national polls is due to the MASSIVE negative ads that mccain has launched over the past month.
it's weird because when hillary tried this in the primaries, it seemed to backfire and sink HER favorability.
is all this tightening because mccain has really managed to shore up HIS base with the ads? i think it may be that republicans in general are more easily fooled by these tactics and are falling in line, especially the evangelicals.
when independents start paying more attention (hopefully with the start of the cnventions next week) maybe the polls will go back up.

My word of the day, for application to certain individuals who have been working hard to prove that the American people are stupid:
JINGOISM
The term is generally negative and applies to extreme patriotism used especially to persuade public opinion in support of war; extreme nationalism characterized especially by a belligerent foreign policy; chauvinistic patriotism.
Good news:
Rachel Maddow (PhD)
will soon host her own show on MSNBC
discussing politics.
I just sent Jack Cafferty a fan letter for his honest & truthful, spin-proof, commentary. He is proof that we are not entirely a nation of crazies.
And Mr. Olbermann pointed out that the tendency of certain people to call other people "Nazi" if they fail to nod and fall in line has become a predictable pattern, a verbal tic.

John McCain reminds me of my own father. He is a war hero in his own way like McCain. He is manipulative, confrontational, and aggressive like McCain only thinking of himself and his survival.
After the death of my mother my father was at my house every day for years while I cooked up a storm for him, entertained him at holidays, took him to doctors, held his hand through multiple operations and illnesses, etc. My father always bullied and punished me. I never dared cross him and when I did it was awful. Here I was a grown, married woman with children and a home business of my own and I was driving this egomaniac around everywhere and catering to his every whim.
It finally stopped a bit when he met a rich widow and now is at HER beck and call. I still take him to the hospital etc., but the girlfriend speaks for him now and I have not been able to get in his house lately. It almost seems like he can only operate under these two extremes. His war experience made him either attack or be a prisoner.
They will be voting for John McCain.
Before my sister died, she had faced some hard times and begged to come live with him in his big,empty,three-bedroom house. I begged him also but he said that he might not survive if he did. Well she didn't. He might have saved her life but he could only stubbornly think of his own survival.
I used to call him the 50's father and I feel that John McCain is the same. He will decimate rather than negotiate or nuance a situation. He will bully and it will be really bad. There was a picture of John McCain floating around at the crap tables. Anyone who votes for him is really shooting craps. But McCain does not care if he loses thousands of dollars...his wife is rich. But we will lose bigtime.
Barack Obama is a nuanced, intelligent, inclusive,problem-solver who would be a uniting force for change. Could you picture Barack grabbing the collar of someone he is supposed to be negotiating with and shaking it and yelling at him? No, because it is unbalanced. Why would aggressive bluster and a wealthy gambler win the day? We must elect Barack Obama to change the course of our country!

Michael Moore's Letter to Caroline Kennedy
Abridged to fit
Dear Caroline,
It appears we may be just days (hours?)from learning who The VP Choice will be.
The media is reporting that Senator Obama has narrowed his alternatives to three men: Joe Biden, Evan Bayh and Tim Kaine. They are far from the core of what the Obama campaign has been about: Change. Real change.
Senators Biden and Bayh voted for that invasion and that war, the war Barack ran against.
What Obama needs is a vice presidential candidate who is NOT a professional politician, but someone who is well-known and beloved by people across the political spectrum; someone who, like Obama, spoke out against the war; someone who has a good and generous heart, who will be cheered by the rest of the world; someone whom we've known and loved and admired all our lives and who has dedicated her life to public service and to the greater good for all.
That person, Caroline, is you.
I cannot think of a more winning ticket than one that reads: "OBAMA-KENNEDY."
Caroline Kennedy a vice president who helps restore America to its goodness and greatness.
Caroline, you are one of the most beloved and respected women in this country, and you have been so admired throughout your life. You chose a life outside of politics, to work for charities and schools, to write and lecture, to raise a wonderful family. But you did not choose to lead a private life.
So many families are hurting, losing their homes, going bankrupt with health care bills, and living with this war without end. This is the year that both names on that ticket should be people OUTSIDE the party machine. This is the year millions of independents and, yes, millions of Republicans are looking for something new (and you are the Kennedy Republicans would vote for!).
This is the moment, Caroline. Seize it! And Barack, Step up and be different than every politician we have witnessed in our lifetime. Keep the passion burning. Make Caroline Kennedy your VP. "Obama-Kennedy." Wow, does that sound so cool.
Caroline, thanks for letting me intrude on your life. How wonderful it will be to have a vice president who will respect the Constitution, who will support (instead of control) her president.
Say it one more time: "OBAMA-KENNEDY."
Yours,
Michael Moore

Please follow this Congresswoman's path and succeed in memory of her fight for equality:
(We)mourn the Loss of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones
Washington, DC – Jody M. Huckaby, ...issued the following statement following news of the passing of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH):
“ (we) mourn the loss of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones, one of our nation’s true champions of equality. From employment non-discrimination to the military to equality for bi-national couples, Congresswoman Jones was an ardent advocate for the dignity of every American. She never shirked from any civil rights battle, and never failed to stand up and give voice to those who often felt voiceless. Our thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Jones’ family. Congress, and our country, have lost one of the biggest hearts of the heartland.”
Congresswoman Jones was a co-sponsor of fully inclusive legislation to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans from workplace discrimination, as well as of Congressional bills to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law, expand the federal hate crimes statute to include sexual orientation and gender identity, and to treat same-sex couples equally under American immigration laws. First elected to Congress in 1998, Tubbs Jones was the first African-American woman to represent the state of Ohio. She passed away on Wednesday after suffering brain hemorrhaging caused by an aneurysm.
