Constituent groups are an integral part of our campaign, working hard and organizing their communities for this movement for change. One way that they are doing this is online, through MyBO groups and constituent group pages.
Here are a few examples of how some of our constituent groups are organizing…
The Latino community is hosting an array of Camp Obama trainings during the next month.
This past weekend, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the National Obama Campaign sponsored one of four slated "Camp Obama" workshops with the greater Latino/a community. I call it the "greater" community because as Latino/as, our community is diverse in dialects, clothes, customs, foods, and music. Diversity is also reflected in our political inclinations. At Camp Obama, participants ranged from the staunch Obama supporters to the undecided. They included the monolingual, bilingual and multi-lingual young and old, from varied countries of origin. All were passionate about learning how to enhance personal skills necessary to become catalysts of change for their unique communities. This simple desire to effectuate "Change," compelled each of us to attend the Camp. Senator Barack Obama's commitment to "Change" is how the Camp became a reality. The Camp started on a Friday. I rushed over to the local culinary union hall after a long day at work. Not knowing what to expect, all participants were given the opportunity to introduce themselves. When it was my turn to speak, I explained that I am a first generation U.S. citizen. I was a grandmother when I returned to school and became the first in my family to obtain a higher education. It wasn't an easy task, considering I had been a high school dropout and teenage mother. And now, there I was, attending leadership workshops facilitated by Marshall Ganz, Professor of Harvard Kennedy School of Government. The workshops were structured in small group and large group sessions, guided by Obama Campaign field representatives. In attendance were Obama Campaign National Field Director Temo Figueroa, and Juan Soto, community organizer from Chicago.
Students for Barack Obama are gearing up for their own convention in the coming weeks.
Though it may seem like all the spots in Denver are reserved for those of us who are senators and/or millionaires, the best spot in the house may actually be reserved for students. The College Democrats of America Convention starts just days before the Democratic National Convention. At the CDA Convention students have the opportunity to take part in valuable trainings, interesting panels and hear from some serious speakers. We are starting on Friday, August 22nd and students can stay throughout the CDA and Democratic National Conventions to attend youth events throughout the week.
Americans Abroad for Obama are conducting voter registration efforts to ensure Americans living overseas can vote absentee.
When Barack laid out his vision for American foreign policy in Berlin last week, he was hardly the only American working the Tiergarten. A team of volunteers, composed of Americans living abroad all over Europe, helped our road team assist people through security, help disabled spectators find their way, wrangle the press, and most importantly, register Americans to vote.Kathleen flew to Berlin from Sweden to volunteer her time, joining roughly 40 other volunteers who registered over 350 Americans to vote in the upcoming election."I was doing voter registration, and it was on a big long street, and we had a couple of stations set up. Most of us spent our time trying to find the "needle in the haystack," the Americans who were not registered to vote. There was a huge group of us that basically just tried to yell out into the crowd. We had signs that said "Voter Registration." We were yelling out "Americans Abroad! Voter registration! Absentee ballot registration!" We actually found quite a few people. I heard an estimate that we registered 350 people. I personally found about 20. And we had tables set up where you could look up the info for the states and what forms to fill out.
We have over 16 constituent communities working to elect Barack Obama as the next president. Find one that you can connect with and join today. It's a great and easy way to get involved.
