After a full day of Camp Obama training, almost 100 attendees are back at the Travis County Coordinated Campaign office here in Austin to learn more about organizing. Yesterday they
shared their stories
, learned about
voter contact
and familiarized themselves campaign's
online organizing resources
before putting their new skills to use phonebanking.
Our Texas field staff is ready for another day of instruction, empowering people to get involved and help build this movement. And the returning attendees here are excited about today's sessions and learning more about how to get their communities organized for Barack.
The people of Austin, Texas are fired up and ready to turn Texas blue. Check out these pictures from this morning and stay tuned for more Camp Obama coverage:

Are you aware that McCain was not in a "safe room" during the interviews held between senator Obama and senator Mccain over the weekend? It was revealed on CNN by Rick Sanchez on Sunday's interview with the evangelical minister. McCain was in a car and claimed he was running late. He came into the forum stating that he had had his ear to the wall. Lies lies and more lies. He has never spoken so well in his caimpaign. It was so rehearsed.

This is the day!
I'm so close to my goal.
Here's what I'm doing:
* leading the UK's largest Obama group, the UK Obama Meetup
* working to increase members in this group - we have almost 600 members now!
* hosting events with the UK Obama Meetup -
* Notting Hill Carnival, next week, we are registering voters, giving away small things, helping people to be aware of voting for Obama, doing press interviews, making it known that we support Obama!!
* a series of fundraising events in upcoming months
* working on a panel for explaining various positions to voters
* working on training volunteers to register voters (remember, outside the U.S., we need info for all 50 States to register voters!)
* working on preparing questions and answers to train people to persuade undecided voters
* doing interviews on UK Television and Radio shows, and with newspapers/ magazines
* writing for Americans Away From Home, the website (google it)
* updating news articles and links on Americans Away From Home

Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain
Phillip Butler | March 27, 2008
As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States.
John was offered, and refused, "early release." Many of us were given this offer. It meant speaking out against your country and lying about your treatment to the press. You had to "admit" that the U.S. was criminal and that our treatment was "lenient and humane." So I, like numerous others, refused the offer. This was obviously something none of us could accept. Besides, we were bound by our service regulations, Geneva Conventions and loyalties to refuse early release until all the POW's were released, with the sick and wounded going first.
Most of us who survived that experience are now in our late 60's and 70's. Sadly, we have died and are dying off at a greater rate than our non-POW contemporaries. We experienced injuries and malnutrition that are coming home to roost. So I believe John's age (73) and survival expectation are not good for being elected to serve as our President for 4 or more years.
I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button.

Aug 17th 2008 at 12:25 pm EDT (Updated Aug 17th 2008 at 12:25 pm EDT)
Howdy folks, just finished a biathlon near Lake Sebago in NY. Incredible. I had to get up at 5 am to get all set for this thing. Those who know me, which is none of you (lol), know I just don't get up that early - but this was important to me!
As I was running, then biking, then running again, I couldn't help but think about Obama (I needed something positive to pull me through). I thought, I need to treat my work on this campaign like it's a race (and wow, it is!). I have to train hard, work on me weaknesses, get up early, keep my focus, avoid distractions, and take action every day.
I also thought about McCain, and what we all saw last night - an incredible display of hatred and intolerance intended to pander to the hard right religious nuts. I realized that under a McCain administration, we will go to war again, we will take away a woman's 'god given right' to make the final decision on what she is going to do with her body. McCain really displayed a character that is so old school, so Bush/Cheney/Buchanan-like that I truly fear for our country if he is elected to POTUS.
I guess I'm rambling now because it hit me, about mid-way into the second run in my race today, that we have two choices: go forward, or go backward.
I choose the former - and recommit myself to this campaign - and make myself into someone who will get up at 5 am, not just to run a biathlon, but also to stuff envelopes, put up posters, prepare for canvassing, buy breakfast for the team, etc.
Thought I'd share this revelation with you this lovely Sunday morning in CT. Hope the sun is shining where you are too. A new day is dawning. One that renews the true spirit of America, and defines a new breed of patriots that battle foes like climate change, greed, lost jobs, diseases, our own secret fears, and shows respect to those who have views and faces different from our own.

Kevin, you are always an inspiration. Congrats on your great accomplishment today.
I think you remind us how important it is to recommit ourselves to this campaign. We have about 80 days left to elect Barack Obama. Push is coming to shove. I'll be going to Denver tomorrow to volunteer at the Convention and when I get back, I'm going to go into overdrive to do what I can to pull us ahead. I've done phonebanking, data entry, canvassing, fundraising and just plain talking to people. All of it is very, very satisfying - especially if you feel discouraged by the MSM.
Now some of us will need to travel to states that are swinging in our direction to secure a win. So yes, let's remind ourselves to do what we can, even if it seems like a small step. Every voice, every step and every penny counts.

Howdy, for you new to the blog, g+s+, means:
going positive, staying positive
it is how I, we, try to run this campaign. It came out just after Clinton went heavy negative on Obama and someone wrote, 'we need to go positive and stay positive'... that stuck with me. it is a key difference between the soul of the two camps.
note: it is free to all who wish to use it. i would love a t-shirt with a big g+s+ on it... hint.

Joe,
this site is moving slower than usual this am; I tried to post a message with your FR page and went to your dashboard to link it and it didn't show up!!
Please everyone we raised $51 Million in July!!
Link
But we're going to have to push harder for August. I know it's hard on some of you to donate, and that's okay, you do other things; but those O-Nation folks who can donate, please, be a little more generous this month; $51 is hard to beat, but we must!!
Begin by donating a little sump'm-sump'm to Joe Ruwe this morning or later in the day. He needs to reach $19,000 by the end of this day. It will be a most precious salute from us for all of his hard work. Not only has he & his adorable FR Team raised money, he has made over 1,000 phone calls all over the country.
So let's get him to $19,000 today. I love you all with all my heart!!
Btw, check out BO getting off the plane, he is so smooth, he could slide on barbed wire!!

I did not see him but I did read the excerpts on Mark Halperins page. According to the excerpt I made Bayh called Pawlenty out for being against the surge. I did not know Pawlenty was against the surge. It seems like that would disqualify him for John McCains VP choice since that is McCains favorite word and of course my friends.

I was not impressed with Evan Bayh and gov. Kaine on Face the Nation and Meet the Press. Even though they both did an adecuate job of defending Barack, they both passed the opportunity to defend him when Jindal and Paulenty accused Barack of wanting to raise taxes on electricity and on people making $45,000. I caught it, why didn't they?
I think Biden wouldn't have missed that opportunity to defend Barack.
Regardless of Biden's shorcomings, we need an attack dog like him as VP or we are going to get crucified by the repubs.
Obama cannot bring himself to play dirty or negative, that's OK, but we need someone who is not as gentle as he is. I don't know much about Biden, but I think he is what we need to win this election.
Regardless, I will accept whomever Barack selects as VP. I just whish he doesn't select another gentle soul like him!

If that doesn't scare the crap out of you, I don't know what will.
Not sure if our campaign will use any of those soundbites from last night, but we could create a scathing ad with McCain's "I will be a pro-life president...' comment - and, you could add in Bush's statements along the same line to further cement the two of them together. I swear, I thought I was watching a scene from Dr. Strangelove when McCain exclaimed his love, maybe even lust, to be a pro-life president! Followed up by his salivating desire to declare war on practically every country that disagrees with the U.S...
My my, this is going to cost him every woman and every one who is disgusted with the waste of lives and money in Iraq - while our economy goes into th tank.

I don't care who you pray to (George Carlin's God was Joe Peshi....remember that??) or how you worship. Actions speak louder than words....I DO care about your DEEDS.
We have a nutso born again in the White House who's God TOLD him to go to war!
And at $2000 a ticket to get into Rick Warren's church is disgusting. Rick Warren is a fat, greedy, money grubbing moron....who laughed at the notion that $150,000 was considered "poverty" in Orange County!
Just like L Ron Hubbard (a mental patient and drug addicted con man who founded Scientology)said....."The easiest way to get rich is to start your own religion"

Well I saw a report on it last night. The church was covering the whole event therefore it is expensive to set up according Kelly O'donell. She actually said that the church had a "lottery" type deal in order to get tickets. The tickets actually cost $2300. So yes the audience was a tailor made McCain conservative base audience. He has to get those votes. The problem is that he may have lost votes from women and independents where Obama may have actually gained some. I definitely don't see it as a win win for McCain. The ticket cost covered the venue.

Great analysis. That's where I saw the gains for Obama. He might have peeled off some of the social evangelicals also. Overall, I would say he lost that debate if you look at it in black and white.
McCain was preaching to the choir. Observers with a distinct sense of spirituality will have a little more reverence for Obama. Most of his answers were sincere. He stumped every now and then but not as much as McCain.

CBN News' David Brody interviewed Barack Obama after Saturday night's Saddleback forum. He says:
It seems like Barack Obama's heated answer about The Born Alive Infant Protection Act is making some headlines out there ... Clearly, the conversation over this bill has gotten Obama riled up. He truly believes The National Life to Right Committee is lying about this controversial infanticide bill which he opposed. He is adamant in saying that the bill he opposed in the Illinois State Senate was NOT the same as the federal legislation that pro-choice Senators even voted for.
The Huffington Post previously reported on the effort to paint Obama as pro-infanticide:
Catholic voters should steel themselves to hear Barack Obama accused of "infanticide" this fall. Support for that heinous crime is the latest charge being cooked up against a Democratic nominee by the man who helped to paint John Kerry as unworthy of the communion wafer back in 2004.
Deal Hudson, who was compelled to resign from his role with the Republican National Committee after sordid details from his personal life were brought to light four years ago, now sits on John McCain's 80-person advisory board for Catholic issues. From that perch, he's begun launching the "infanticide" smear against Obama in niche media outlets like his own "Inside Catholic" website and talk radio host Al Kresta's program. ("Infanticide is becoming a touchy subject for Barack Obama," Hudson wrote matter-of-factly on his website in early July.)

With so much uncertain, how can anyone vote another republican into office? The logic behind republicans keeping us safe is nonsense!
9/11 happened under Rethug rule,
biggest deficit ever happened under rethug rule
worse housing crisis since great depression happened under rethug rule
highest gas prices under rethug rule
Can people be serious about putting another republican in office. I mean really???? This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Bryan as someone suggested yesterday you may want to take some time off and take a step back for a little while. Maybe you are suffering from election/campaign fatigue. Obama definitely knows who he wants as VP we just don't know who yet. It would make no sense for either one of them to end their campaigns. Politics is tough and only the strong survive.

Getting Democrats registered to vote is an effort that can help deliver victory for us in November. You can hand out slips of paper to people printed with the Obama website address because right on the homepage is a link that says “REGISTER TO VOTE” for those who want to register themselves online.
Or you can find voter registration forms for each state at the Board of Elections links below. You’ll also find contact information at these sites so you can call and ask your Board about the requirements for registering voters in your state.
I keep a stack of registration forms with me and just in going about my day, I have been able to register friends, sales clerks, people at sporting events, and even the plumber who was fixing our faucet!
Again, if you’re going to try to register voters, be sure to find out registration requirements for your area and also please remind people about the IMPORTANCE OF BRINGING PROPER I.D. WITH A CORRECT ADDRESS ON VOTING DAY. Thank you.

Most ex-felons were not told this and most ex-felons are democrats becasue of there situation.
Tom Hartman feels there are 8 million ex-felons who are eligible to register. And if even a portion knew they could register, then that could give a couple of states to Obama. Please pass the word, to check state laws...

The reply I got from the Hq has nothing to do with my letter. The Republican have engaged in deliberate falsification of Obama's tax plan and it is important that supporters are armed with the detailed resources to fight back.
I know that some refutations are provided in both the video and fight the smears but that is rather reactionary,we need more than that.
Attached is reply from the HQ.
Dear Fanor,
Thank you for contacting Obama for America. The volume of messages we're receiving has gone up recently, and we appreciate hearing from you. While we cannot respond individually to thousands of messages per day, the level of interest and thoughtfulness of the comments reflected in these communications are very gratifying. Your thoughts on our campaign and America's future are greatly appreciated.
Individual citizens like you are the foundation of this campaign.
Since he entered this race, Barack has spoken consistently of working together to reclaim the meaning of citizenship, restore our sense of common purpose and rally the power of millions of voices to demand long overdue change. We hope you will explore our website, www.BarackObama.com, to learn more about Barack, his record and his plans.
If you're writing because you want change, we need you to help us fight for it. Please sign up here to volunteer:

And you can get started from home right now. We've built a set of easy-to-use web tools that empower you to get further involved right now. Sign up for My.BarackObama.com, where you can find events near you, connect with neighbors who support Barack, create your own blog, and do much, much more.
And if you're not sure you want to get involved, and are writing to express a concern or disagreement, we appreciate that as well. The open discussion we want to facilitate cannot take place without hearing from people expressing a wide range of views.
Thank you again for writing.

The Civil forum yesterday produced one forum with faith based perpective on social issues which Barack handled brilliantly.
The second forum was about War and the warmindeness of John McCain. He has so much of narrow view point of issues that for hm everything is defined in terms of military power. very antagonistic.
His comments about Russia were very dangerous and provocative. It would serve MCCain well to realise that right now Russia is Militarily stronger than US with the two wars in Iraq and Afganistan.
Of the three people he will listen to one is Gen Patreaus. If a propective commander in chief bows down to an army general so much in public now how will he be able to objectively analyse the advice from his general when he takes office? This is riduculous.

One of the candidates for president strolled onto the stage at a massive megachurch in suburban Orange County Saturday night and started joking easily with the Rev. Rick Warren, maybe the most popular evangelical leader in America -- but just plain "Pastor Rick" to the candidate. He talked about his certainty that "Jesus Christ died for my sins, and I am redeemed through him," said Americans should be soldiers in the fight against evil, and defined marriage as between a man and a woman -- "and God is in the mix." This particular Christian candidate was so on his game that after a segment on domestic policy ended, Warren told him -- his mic still live as the TV feed cut to commercial -- "Home run."

Here's a quick draft of part of as speech I would construct for Obama talking to Texans:
Hello, my name is Barak Obama. As you can see I am black and some people think that I therefore do not belong in the White House. I can understand that feeling because I was raised by my loving Middle America Fundamentalist grandparents who very much thought that way. But I am running for the Presidency of the United States-- not because I am black but because I am desperately aware that America needs to change and to change fast or it will sink irretrievably into the morass into which it was sunk by this administration. I would not have subjected myself and my family to all the slings and arrows that a black man faces submitting his name for presidential candidacy if I didn't intensely love my America and yours as much as we all do; unless I really believe that I have a salvation to offer that I do not think my opponent capable of offering.
There is one unique experience I bring to national politics that is unique: I am a biological composite of what many would deem opposites. Fate brought me into this world looking black and giving me African names because of my father. But I am in every way a white Middle American because of my mother who came from Kansas. To survive and not go mad, I had to make peace within me with all the opposites I inherited from my parents. Having achieved through hard introspection and self-discipline a together I-like-myself-one-whole-united -me, I really think that I can do the same for our very polarized America, not just between whites and blacks but also cultural clashes that are at the root of our polarization into opposites. If we are to survive as world leader and a happy nation with hope and progress ongoing, we need foremost to achieve a making-us-whole-and-one-united Middle form which we can all take off together. Towards that end we need moderate and reasonable policies that slowly but surely bring us out of the trajectory into the dangerous reef that the current administration has led our Ship of State into, charting our way into safer, surer waters for smooth sailing.

I'm thinking, remembering Hillary. In the first debate, she cut off everyone, wouldn't even let them stop for a commercial break, argued with the anchor. I thought it was just rude.
Then later, it was clear - her strategy to show no weakness, solid, warring. And it worked!
Hillary became known for being strong, and for being tough. Maybe that is why McCain is acting this way.
We have a superb candidate. Barack is almost flawless. To the people who think he is too genteel, and want him to be tougher; then we would have a warlike McCain.

Well said Carole, I agree Obama's style is different, it's what drew me to him in the first place.
Anyone can be rude, lack manners, be disruptive, but it takes an inner grace like Obama has to be more thoughtful and give people whom he speaks the same intellectual respect.
People who think Obama can't be tough because he isn't belligerent or doesn't try to over talk people, does not mean he's not tough where it counts. He's more strategic, like chess or poker, he's very effective in summing up his opponent.
I'm sorry McCain might be more tough talk, but that is the easy part imho.

Hi all...out of curiosity, could someone tell me how the various polls are accumulated? Is it by land phone only or do they include cell phones? I ask this because a huge number of citizens especially the Millineans and Generation X generation have cell phones only and not land phones. Also, what about the fact that there are more Democratic voters than Republican voters and it seems that most of the newly registered voters are Democrats. How does all of this play in the polls? Lastly, are polls taken other than by phone, i.e. internet, face-to-face. For example, how is the Gallup poll accumulated? Sorry for all of the questions, but have a need to know. Thanks!

land lines only for most polls. some, if they supplied a number when they registered, have that number so if it's a cell they are surveyed.

McShame mentioned last night that one of his moral failures was the failure of his first marriage. Speaking of that first marriage, why doesn't the press ever question McShame about the children from this first marriage, who are all probably over 40 by now. Why aren't they out there stumping for and supporting their dad? If this were Obama, the press would have been all over him citing something like: "Obama has a hidden family"....

"Cross in the Dirt" story stolen from...
[…] It just sounded so fake and so contrived, so... I searched around [on Google] and [found] a story about Alexander Solzhenitsyn from his times in the Soviet Gulags.
“...On one particular day, the hopelessness of his situation became too much for him. He saw no reason to continue his struggle, no reason to keep on living. His life made no difference in the world. So he gave up.
Leaving his shovel on the ground, he slowly walked to a crude bench and sat down. He knew that at any moment a guard would order him to stand up, and when he failed to respond, the guard would beat him to death, probably with his own shovel. He had seen it happen to other prisoners.
As he waited, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly he looked up and saw a skinny old prisoner squat down beside him. The man said nothing. Instead, he used a stick to trace in the dirt the sign of the Cross. The man then got back up and returned to his work.
As Solzhenitsyn stared at the Cross drawn in the dirt his entire perspective changed. He knew he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet he knew there was something greater than the evil he saw in the prison camp, something greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that hope for all people was represented by that simple Cross. Through the power of the Cross, anything was possible.
Solzhenitsyn slowly rose to his feet, picked up his shovel, and went back to work. Outwardly, nothing had changed. Inside, he had received hope.”

When I heard McCain talk about that cross it sounded like another Bosnia story to me. So, I also "used the google"
A September 13, 1968, cable from Averell Harriman, U.S. ambassador-at-large, to the State Department confirmed that McCain's captors had offered him early release, but that he had refused. The cable reported that, according to the Vietnamese, "Commander McCain feared that if he was released before the war is over, President [Lyndon] Johnson might 'cause difficulties' for his father because people will wonder if McCain had been brainwashed."
McCain was moved into in the "Hanoi Hilton." On Christmas Eve, McCain CHATTED with “The Cat.” They talked about McCain refusing early release.

The minute that story came out of his mouth I knew it was a LIE. I saw it in his eyes and on his face that all he wanted was to get more votes from those in the audience by using their own highly regarded symbol to insert into a completely untrue story. I use to feel bad for him that he went through the experiences he had, but look what America is now doing, not really any different than what happened to him - - why isn't he trying to stop the horrible things going on to Iraq/Afgan. POW's. huh?
He creeps me out. I wish he would be beamed up onto a visiting spaceship and be wisked away for the preservation of the entire planet!!!!

Confirmed by Rick Sanchez on CNN this evening and from Rick Warren's own mouth!! McCain was roaming on the streets, on his Secret Service motorcade _WHILE_ the forum was going on.
He was ABSENT for 20 minutes into the debate!!!
Which leads to believe that he could have and must have had wind of the questions... That suspicious absence explains why he was so quick, sharp, and well rehearsed in his answers....
He even betrayed himself by alluding to the Supreme Court question... How did he know about that question???
Sen. Obama is playing too nice and plays by the game. McCain and his clan do not. When will HQ, the BO campaing and Sen. Obama himself stop playing NICE. It's harming him.
He's being screwed up, messed up with, swiftboated in many ways, and he doesn't even realize it!
He should be mentioning that he is a man of his word and he abides by the rule. He should mention in his campaing stomps this week that he WOULD have stayed in the "Cone of Silence" as agreed to...

Am I the only one who saw something wrong with Barack Obama and John McCain LIVE at the Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency August 16th?
JM who came second was not to know about the questions put to Barack Obama
However, I noted a few incidents in the JM responses that appeared to tell that he had watched the BO interview or he had the questions from some other source:
After answering the stem cell question JM asked the moderator pastor, when/whether the question on the Supreme Court Judges was to come up. He, noted, that the stem cell questions was related to the SC one. The Moderator, with a little mortification – one could feel it in his tone – mumbled some reassuring words to JM which I missed.
JM’s answers not only appeared rehearsed, but they were fired out quicker and much more promptly than the questions the pastor was asking him. Pastor Rick Warren even complained that JM was answering questions so fast. Example: JM did not wait for the pastor to finish outlining some of his questions. JM just interrupted and gave the answer!
He acted like an excited High School student who has read through the question script a day before the exam, and is scribbling away what he memorized before they evaporate from the mind.
Because of his short answers, he got an opportunity to be asked a question that BO did not get…. cant remember which one but he almost had no answer to that, which almost says that he was watching Obama’s responses and came up with his own refined ones.
Why would he appear less spontaneous only on the question that Obama did not get?
After his short answers, JM had nothing more than to fill his blank mind by telling war stories and his now well know talking points.
JM even equated evil with terrorism. Evil as we know it, is something broader. In a Christian sense, Evil is everything that God does not agree with.
We must defeat evil, JM declared! Those evangelicals who were applauding him are probably not Christians.
The Bible teaches that we must avoid and steer clear of evil and strive to please God through our actions. God himself will defeat evil not JM.
We cannot confuse standing against evil with defeating it.
I am worried about America now
