Am I the only one who thinks McCain choosing Palin as VP is an embarrassment to this country. I guess I care too much for the country and it is an embarrassing to hear "it is good to see other part of the country:" from so-called VP choice...

Am I the only one who is angry that Mccain thinks all women are stupid....For God's sake- Palin is NO Hillary Clinton...the next time I hear her uttering Hillary's name- I guess- I will get a heart attack out of irritation..:-)

Not only that Dee but I was watching thier rally in PA and when she mentioned Hillary's name the crowd starting booing. I dont know if anyone else caught that but me. She didnt even say anything to the crowd for disrespecting her like that. She is a joke and everyone will read right through her.

I wish I had seen that. But, it all plays into the theme McCain has no respect for women. His voting record (which, suprisingly, she supports) tells you. He is so shallow he believes you all think alike in most cases. In other cases, he believes you need someone to think for you. Kind of cynical don't you think. Also, she will soon find out what being in the national spot light is really like.

We and the campaign need to not underestimate Governor Palin or her impact on this election. Choosing to not abort a down syndrome child, and video clips that show her firing an automatic weapon may resonate with undecided voters. Her strongly conservative views may help solidify the republican base.

I urge our campaign to not take her on directly. Instead, encourage the media to interview her. Let's let the public know Gov. Palin through tough media scrutiny. And Senator Biden will be in a tough position during the VP debate. Don't take her lightly.

I completely agree. She is already being hyped as a wife and a mother. She will use her story of having a downs syndrome baby to show how strongly she believes in an anti-abortion stance. Never mind that others should not be FORCED to follow her actions.

Voters like to see women as 'fighters'- remember Hillary? It was not so long ago. When she came out swinging, she started winning the states. Sarah whatever will do more of that. McCain's playbook is based on Hillary's and Palin's will too.

I agree that we cannot take her lightly, and yet Barack & Joe cannot directly criticize her. We have to make women aware of the choice they would be making on Nov.4th- freedom or bondage?

HELLO PEOPLE....THIS IS AN ACTUAL FACT:

My Republican sources tell me that at the night of Barack's speech, McSame had indeed made his choice on a VP, but his choice was not Sarah Palin, his choice was MITT ROMMNEY. Before Barack's speech, Rommney had already accepted the vp nod, but after Barack ended his speech, Rommney realized what must republicans knwe at that point....THAT THIS ELECTION IS LOST AND THAT BARACK OBAMA WILL WIN.....So Rommney called back MaCain and turned down the offer. McCain Phoned Pawlenty, Cantor and other Repubs that where on his shortlist, but no one accepted, they all know, that a fail run for the vice presidency is the best way to say goodbye to a political career, whit nowhere else to go, he called Sarah Palin, because she was the only that would accept.

The Repubs know that Palin have a lot of skeletons in the closet, which are:

1. Her husband work for BP petroleum in Russia, she has ties with big oil companies, that is why sshe says that global warming does not exist, that anwar should be drilled, and that the NRA should hunt all polar bears and gray wolves to extinction.

2. She is currently being investigated by the Alaska legislature for Abuse of Power and Nepotism.

3. No one ever saw Palin pregnant of her last child, but curiosly, her 16 year old daughter, abruptly left school and no one saw her for more than 7 months, because of an "illness". At the same time of Palin "pregnancy". My sources tell me that Palins last child is in fact the child of her daughter. Palin did that cover up because an unwanted teen pregnancy of her daughter would be a political liability, specially among social conservatives...

All the MSM cover about Palin is just spin to cover the truth that I have just wrote here....

McCain have just demonstrated that he have no judgment whatsoever...

We should be careful not to emulate the republican party. The guilty by innuendo is not right. Do you know what the Democrats and the republicans? We are liberal thinkers, free thinkers if you will. The republicans "tow the party line" they say and believe whatever is told them. Their favorite tool is to attack the person because they cannot effectively argue premise.
Now, one thing I would question about Palin’s judgment has to do with her last child. Apparently, it has been reported her water broke while she was waiting to give a speech in Texas. She then made the decision to give the speech anyway and THEN catch a plane to Alaska so her baby would not be born in Texas. Now what does that say about her judgment? Ask any woman or pediatrician if that was a good decision. And what did she think of Texas? Does she consider it a foreign country?

I agree. He is using her as a woman, to get the news cycle back from Obama's historic moment. Of course the Main Stream media takes all Repub talking points as "news'.
This is so crazy, anyone would have been crazy to run with McCain but I truly think that Mccain takes this as a joke. Our country is in serious trouble.
He is trying to say that he for chgange but CHANGE OF GENDER IS NOT CHANGE OF POLICIES. SHE IS CRAZIER THAN MCCAIN AND JUST AS OIL CRAZY AS CHENEY. THIS IS NOT CHANGE THIS IS MORE OF THE SAME!!!!

I can only imagine Putin and the KGB figuring out how they will negoticate with Palin should she end up as POTUS. They ran rough shod over Bush, and will run over McCain. One can only wonder how the world leaders are considering the possibility of Palin as POTUS.

I am sure that while most of us thought that anyone would be better than Bush, we are rethinking that now that Palin is the GOP VP nominee.

I noted that the normal GOP bias in the news disappeared a bit with many 'news' people asking if McCain was serious about Palin. I think the absurdity of the selection will play out to Obama's advantage.

So, no I doubt it's limited to a small group of obama supporters, I think every american, even the talking heads spouting the party line of how great Palin is are embarrased by the choice.

MY GOD! MY EARS WON'T STOP BLEEDING!!! Her voice is like a rusty knife with a jagged edge.

Call me petty. Call me mean. I don't care. I cannot listen to this woman for the next four years.

The Democratic women in this party, the ones with razor sharp tongues and wit are going to have to go after Palin with a vengeance. Not Biden. Not Obama. No, the women should do this. Women like: Clinton. Boxer. McCaskill. Where the hell is Kiki???? Pelosi. Wasserman. It's time to take the gloves off for a straight up bare-knuckle brawl.

The thought of Palin as POTUS gives me the hives ... and nightmares.

PUMA is no longer worth talking about. The party has done all it can to unify. Barack has done everything he can to bring them into the fold...it is time to let them go. I don't know think they are racist. I think some of them are truly angry and cannot yet see straight. But, I think the majority of them are G. Gordon Liddy-type GOP operatives driving the rancor that exists, and trying to make certain it does not dissipate. There are racists out there, no doubt, but I don't think this group qualifies-- it smells rather like a Karl Rove operation to me.

She talked about how she and her husband fell in love, how hot it was and that she was not used to that(apparently she has never been anywhere except Alaska). She talked about coaching basketball and being a point guard. Oh yeah and her great stance on ethics reform. That's all she could talk about really. She was a cheerleader for McCain and said what he would do as far as foreign relations go but of course she could not put herself in that discussion. It was rather sad really. He is going to have to introduce her while we can keep attacking him and tying him to Bush. They aren't attacking Obama/Biden. I guess they are still re-working their new strategy since experience and foreign policy is off the table. She focused on "shaking things up" right out of Obama's play book. Hell he passed the toughest ethics reform in Washington.

For the last year,Obama has been attacked on the stands he took from Hillary,McBush and every pundit(Iraq timetable,Iran talk,...)but Bush and the Iraqis ended up "FOLLOWING" his advises!

this is what I said on another blog. McCain flinched, caved in, as is now trying to "out-Obama, Obama". He's playing Obama's game now, just like Bush played his game in foreign policy.

McCain is trying to re-introduce himself as a "change agent" and a "maverick." The only problem is, HIS POLICIES ARE IN STEP WITH BUSH'S! LOL Talk about putting lipstick on a pig.

Obama can't say this (well, in the debates he can) so Biden does it for him. Biden did that in his speech Wednesday and on the stump today.

I liked it today when Obama said he's travel to all the states except.......ALASKA. Joe got a kick out of that. He said "now I may have to swing up there" LOL

First, a special shout out to Brian Fairbanks for letting us know about this. Nerve.com has published the internal McCain Campaign talking points memo dealing with the Palin VP selection. I can't confirm its authenticity, but the Republican surrogates I've seen this afternoon are quoting it verbatim.

The memo reads like an exercise in contradictions. In the beginning of the election, McCain tried to measure the value of a candidate's experience based on quantity. Now, they are arguing that it is the quality of the experience, which has been the position of the Democrats since the beginning.

I'd like to suggest that we all play a game. Over the next few days, let's see how often that Republican hacks regurgitate the following phrases from the memo: “record of achieving results ”, “record of accomplishment”, “shaking up the status quo”, and “maverick”. If you hear one of these lines, mention it in the comment section below. Here's one to get us started: I saw Eric Cantor and Rob Portman on Race to the White House today, and they (unenthusiastically) went through the motions of saying that Palin has a record of accomplishment.

We are omitting Sarah used the quote of John Shedd in her first intro speech without attributing the quote. She uses the quote about "a ship is safe in harbor" like she came up with it herself, but she did not. Of course she may not know much about Shedd but it's definately John Shedd.

I read the article on the bridge to nowhere money being kept and think it is an issue that could very well sink McCain's ship if we can get more detailed information and confirmation that the money was kept rather than returned. How much, and how was it kept, where did it go? When we get these answers we will know if it's truly game over on this alone.

If it turns out we don't have that information, then it may backfire on us to push this story.

Anyone have a way to follow up on that story?

Hi from Sharon in Columbus Ohio!!! I was not able to make it to the rally in Dublin, a large suburb of Columbus, but I watched the event on my computer. It was really heartwarming to see all of those people, white and black, out there supporting Obama and Biden. They seem to be fired up for sure. I donated a small amount 2 weeks ago and this is the first time that I ever donated to a political campaign. I really believe that the country is ready for change. I hope that Ohio will go blue this year. The economy here is the pits. Everyone here is having a hard time making ends meet. Ohio used to have a decent economy under the Clinton administration. I am an African- American who just turned 46 last week and I was very impressed to see the racially mixed crowd at the rally in Dublin. It says a lot on how far our country has come. I believe that we will win the election this year!

Folks ... Just arrived back from a day of training for Neighborhood Team Leaders in Region 7 in Missouri. I've lost count of how many counties are in our region, but as an NTL in Franklin Co., I have some exciting news to post.

Missouri is third in the nation for the number of persuasion calls made so far, and Franklin Co. is leading in "first pass" voter contact in our state. How's that for encouragement?

Seeing our targets, knowing how far we have come already, and knowing that we will complete everything we need to do, plus some, before the election, I have to tell you that I am even more fired up (I didn't think that was possible) and feel so honored, privileged and just plain excited to be part of this campaign.

If there is anyone from MO reading this who is not already involved, jump right in! This thing is winnable in the Show Me State!!!

I'm dehydrated and sunburned from standing outside in 95 degree heat to register voters here in Pensacola.

I saw a lot of sad and down trodden people today and most would not give us the time of day but I'll share some stories that will make you smile.

The little boy with glasses who kept saying, Mom, I want to do that, I want to vote for Barack Obama (I gave him a flyer to keep). The young marines who are here in basic school. They don't know where they are going to be on November 4th and they don't know the address at their barracks. One wasn't a U.S. citizen, but they are willing to fight and die for our country. I told them to make sure to register and get absentee ballots and mail them in by election day. I hope they will. The young marines here break my heart every day. I registered a homeless man. He gets mail at his sisters house. He said, "I gotta do something". Maybe he will.

We have to win this people. Get out there and do something.

The most troubling issue about this selection is that 'she' would not be a counsel to him as Biden will. I don't think she will brought in on major issues. I believe McCain once said after the 2000 primary that VP's are there to attend the funerals of other heads of state.

Most people would acknowledge that, regardless of her charm and good intentions, Palin is not ready for the top job. McCain seems to have put his political interests ahead of the nation’s when he created the possibility that she might fill it.

There was also some pandering right from the start. “I told Congress `Thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere,’ ” Palin reported to the crowd in Dayton, Ohio. “If our state wanted a bridge, I said, we’d build it ourselves.”

But the state kept the bridge money. That’s because Alaskans pay federal gas taxes and they expect a good share to come back, just like people do in every other state. We build very little by ourselves, and any governor who would turn that tax money down likely would be turned out of office.

Alaska's legislature is spending up to $100,000 "to investigate the circumstances and events surrounding the termination of former Public Safety Commissioner Monegan, and potential abuses of power and/or improper actions by members of the executive branch."

The investigation is supposed to wrap up by Oct. 31, just days before the Nov. 4 general election.

Palin will be deposed along with others in the governor's office and former administration officials, said state Sen. Hollis French, a Democrat and former state prosecutor from Anchorage who is serving as the project director for the investigation. The special counsel just this week was trying to arrange Palin's deposition, French said.

French said Palin's new role as vice-presidential candidate won't change the investigation.

"I think it raises the profile but it doesn't really change the mission or the work," the senator said.

Before she was governor, Palin pushed for a trooper investigation of Wooten over a number of matters, including using a Taser on his stepson, illegally shooting a moose, and accusations of driving drunk. At one point, Palin and her husband hired a private investigator.

Troopers did investigate, and Wooten was suspended for 10 days, later reduced to five. That took care of it, Monegan said. But the Palin administration and Todd Palin wouldn't let go, he said.

Barack chose Biden for his VP. Biden fills the foreign experience gap in Barack's resume. He will be ready to serve as president should the need arise.

Barack was thinking of the country.

McCain chose Palin, who has practically zero experience in politics (18-20 months as governor of Alaska amounts to almost zero, politically). Should something happen to the 72 year old McCain, the country will have to run itself, since Palin will be incapable of doing so.

McCain was only thinking about how he can win the election.

I am not sure about that since I think phone calls are going to registered voters. I am not sure about this though for sure. I do know that you can call and to get volunteers and these volunteers could do tableing or other registration activities. If you are interested in doing it in your home state I would call your local office and see what kind of support work you can do. If you are interested in working for another state I would suggest soliciting volunteers.

Hi everyone:

I normally just come to the blogs to read what everyone is saying on a daily basis, but today I feel compelled to comment.

From my heart, I believe that the GOP's reasoning behind making the selection they made for McCain's running mate is for us to do what we're doing right now, which is to spend an absorbitant amout of time talking about it, while letting Barack and Joe slide off of the radar. We all know that the pick was politically expedient and a HUGE pander, but Barack has the right idea - in his latest ad, he doesn't even mention the name of McCain's running mate - instead he points out that the pick is more of the same politics. I say we take a page from Barack's book: let the GOP have their 15 minutes of fame (and from my estimate, they may have about 2 minutes left), and continue to focus on supporting our candidate.

Well, if you think Governor Palin is qualified to be President in these complex, dangerous times that is your opinion. I think she is a nice woman, that I would probably like to have as my neighbor. But, she is no more qualified to be our President than I am-- Alaska has its problems, but those problems have little, or anything to do, with the problems faced elsewhere. Alaska has no rust belt, no great distribution hubs, no budget crisis (all of those oil royalties-- perhaps we can all get $1000 per year from big oil? I don't think the GOP would go along with that idea for more off shore drilling, though), and a massive abundance of land (and polar bears).

Conversely, Illinois is a macrocosm of this great Country-- from its farm belt, to its rust belt, its great transportation hub, to its technological belt.

And Senator Biden, despite his 30 years in the Senate, has the lowest net worth of any Senator. The man is only worth $150,000 TOTAL. There is no sign of corruption in those numbers.

I'll go with Barack and Joe, thank you. They will bring common sense, and leave behind empty mantras, to Washington-- thank goodness!

I don't know this town myself. One of the things I have learned, though, by calling people all over this Country, is that it is never useful to stereotype no matter at whom the stereotype is aimed.

I didn't even know it, but I used to be one gigantic bag of stereotypes-- about regions, about states, about mountains, plains and coasts (my stereotypes were mainly grounded in a notion that the land informs who we are much more than it really does)-- in those calls, one stereotype after another was proven utterly false. My stereotypes did not help to understand the person to whom I was speaking-- indeed, they got in the way. When I just spoke to a person as a person I was interested in hearing, suddenly I started having conversations. My conversations did not always end in a vote, and perhaps they benefited me more than they did this Campaign. One thing I learned from them was stereotypes actually hinder real conversation, no matter how we come up with them, or at whom they are aimed.

The first order of change is to change the party that controls the executive branch. The other important change is to have a democratic majority in the Senate.

Then Obama's policies can be implemented to a large extent.

Selecting Joe Biden may not seem like change, but Obama cannot run the country by himself.

Conversely, Gov. Palin may seem like an outsider, but it's doubtful she will bring about change on any of the significant issues since John McCain is running the show.

It is important to believe in change/renewal, but it's also important to select the policies that can best serve the nation. We've had 8 years of 'republican' (more like neo-con) policies which have brought this country to the brink of ruin. To continue those policies with John McCain is not change.

Actually, I think change is a great deal more than a slogan. I think it is a necessity. If we keep doing what we have been doing, the only thing that is going to change is that everything will simply continue to get worse. We have to change-- that is not a slogan, it is absolutely necessary. Nothing has "changed" (pardon the repetition) about that.

Sounds like you are suggesting the slogan "Change for change sake" is the McCain motto.

While McCain is trying, as well as pretty much every other politician to be the "change" candidate there is only one authentic, real, orgininalllllllll.. Obama...

Seriously, change for change sake isn't what Obama is about. We are talking about responsible governance. We are talking about addressing how we approach making decisions, who is involved and a balanced influence on the process. Random change for change sake may be your thing, but it's not what Obama is offering, nor was it ever what Obama offered. "The Audacity of Hope" is a pretty easy read and engaging. It would be a good read even in a non-election year. After you read it, please cite where you think Obama is suggesting random radical change for change sake as I must have missed that part.

Obama does want us to hold politicans accountable, he wants to change the amount of influence that lobbyists have, not just in the electoral process which is minor compared to the influence in governance (they actually write the damn legislation in many cases). Obama wants to not just compromise for compromise sake, but to try a bit harder to reach concensus, and even when taking action that is not a concensus have at least seriously considered alternate views. Obama would like to move away from gotcha politics, and gotcha legislation (again his books are a good read).

In short, Obama wants to move politics towards where we focus not on what we can not do or agree on, but on what we can do, and can agree on. Obama's understanding and first rate education make him especially well suited to handle more cerebral nations that have cleaned Bush's clock for the last 8 years. Obama will not look into Putin's eyes and think he sees Putin's soul. Yet Obama will match Putin's crafty intelligence in a way that McCain nor Palin could ever do.

Change for change sake is really just chaos. That is just never been what Obama has suggested.

Of course that is just my opinion, your view is obviously quite different than mine.

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (CNN) – This might not be the best way to reach out to those disillusioned Hillary Clinton supporters.

In just her second appearance on the campaign trail with John McCain, newly-minted GOP running mate Sarah Palin was showered with boos on Saturday for attempting to praise Clinton’s trail-blazing bid to become the first female president.

As she did at in her debut speech in Ohio yesterday, Palin reached out to the women in the crowd here in Pennsylvania with a political shout-out to Geraldine Ferraro, who preceded Palin as the first women to be tapped as a vice presidential candidate. The reference was met with polite applause.

But in contrast with the mild reception that greeted the comment at the Ohio event, when Palin praised Clinton here for showing “determination and grace in her presidential campaign,” the Alaska governor was met with a noisy mix of boos, groans and grumbles around the minor league ballpark where the “Road to the Convention Rally” was held.

Palin quickly recovered, promising the audience that female candidates weren’t yet finished, and that she and McCain were on their way to victory in November.

Mike-- I'm not a Democrat, though I plan to become one once I am certain that my ballot has been cast, and hopefully counted.

Again, I ask you to recall that no-one's supporters are seeking any office. Senator Obama and Senator Biden are. Also, I can find nothing that was hateful-- though many did question Governor Palin's qualifications. It is not uncivil to question. Please try and remember that many come here with the intention of throwing verbal hate bombs at us for little reason that I can find. Also recall that your first post -- that I read -- attacked all of us, without explanation, as being a hate-filled bunch. Few respond well to attack-- not even Democrats, who I have found to be a generally lively, but polite, bunch of people in the last few months of my experience with them.

Also, please remember the wise words of Will Rogers-- "I don't belong to an organized political party. I'm a Democrat." Think about that-- the Democratic party will never be a party of lock-step, we can rest assured in that knowledge at the very least.

I don't think you should base your vote on what people say, but look after your own interest and get your own reliable resources for information. It's about common sense and judgment. Draw a line of negatives and positives between the two main candidates if that can help. It's not about who you get along with, there are good ones and bad ones in either party. It's about what you think is good for you and your family. Either way, it's your choice and no one can take it away from you. If you really think Obama is not your candidate because someone said something nasty to you and you prefer McCain, that's your choice. We get what we ask for. Good luck.

I was watching a/report on how simple/economical it is to turn algae into biofuel. I thought"cool."When the report was finished I started thinking"Algae, good/idea."Then drifted to pools and thought"algae, what a pain in the ass." Then I thought "oil crisis solved." Now I'm here. With info I got from these guys, I realized how easily a houshold pool could be converted into one of these algea farms during the winter months when pools aren't being used. Not only would they produce unough bio fule for all the cooking and heating for the winter months, but enough fuel left over to heat the pools during the rest of the months. Not only that, but enough fuel left over to fuel their auto mobils for the whole year! With gov funding and incentives, every houshold in America that already has a pool can easily be converted. New construction of homes would all include pools at no extra costs with gov incentives and funding. The encentives for home owners currently without pools would have great incentives to get one. With investments towards energy independance, i'm sure the RIGHT government would greatly help with the costs. So many benifits, so many new jobs created, so many McCaines, Bushes, Chaney, Palins and big oil put out of business. We are ALL for that. And from what I understand, the only byproduct is a high protein "cake" that can be used for a feed for animals or even humans. Wow.

Yes the algae to bio fuel is being developed here in NM at the University. I saw a news piece about it and it is very cool! I can proudly say our govenor is very pro alternative fuel and we have I think 10% or 20% energy that must be produced by alternative sources in NM. Gov. Richardson is very progressive.

We are thinking of going solar or wind for our home and something I do to save electric in summer in solar cook. It is easy to make a cardboard solar oven and bake or cook in it. My favorite is baking solar brownies! Anyone can do this and help save some fuel and electric. Maybe we can start a solar cooking drive to help the enviroment for Barack. It is amazing how well it works! Just google solar cooking for lots of ideas and designs. Then what we save on electric or gas, we can donate to Barack & Joe!

Re-read the thread-- ask yourself if you may not have offered some offense out of anger at the present situation. Then, try and reverse the situation, and see if your post might not have aggravated you had you been the target. I understand that you wish things had turned out differently, but they did not and that cannot be changed now.

We cannot afford to get bogged down in the usual divisions and distractions, or we will end up with 4 more years of the same. Senator McCain is not different, although he may have been in the past, he is not now. He flip-flopped on torture, he wants to privatize social security and he wants to tax any health care benefit we may get as employees (a proposal that will only make our current health care problems worse).

Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are on the same side of many issues, including health care and equal pay for woman (which Senator McCain voted against, and suggested was not really a problem). Since you were a supporter of Senator Clinton's campaign, I know you care about health care. With Senator Obama, we can help make real health care reform happen. With Senator McCain, our health care situation will only get worse.

Please try and get past your anger. Our Country is at stake-- and we need to try and reach everyone, at the very least, who agrees with us about the fundamentals (like our Country's very real need for health care reform).

A counter to the outpouring of pro-Palin people from Dem campaign sources in Ohio:

We've had multiple diehard Hillary supporters come into our office yesterday and today and say that HRC's speech didn't sway them and neither did Obama's, but they resent the Palin pick as trying to manipulate them and think it's insulting to compare her to Hillary, and they have gone from sitting this out to volunteering for Barack.

There is a backlash we're seeing among HRC supporters who are now coming over.

Also, Obama's camp notes that Democratic women aren't exactly flocking to the GOP ticket now. A new poll on the pick out from Gallup shows that, among this group, only 9 percent said Palin makes them more likely to back McCain, while 15 percent said it would make them less likely.

Further, among all voters, 39 percent says she would be ready to be president if needed, while 33 percent say she's not. Asked the same question about Biden, 57 percent said he was ready, while 18 percent said he wasn't.

HOWEVER, reactionaries (definition - a radical attitude of opposition to change and evolution, especially in regards to society) will be supposedly appeased by his choice.

There are some GREAT volunteers doing wonderful things.

for HELP - contact your local DNC - they may have lists of "Old Faithful" volunteers who phone bank, leaflet, canvas, fundraise, etc. They have umbrellas and clip boards and buttons and EXPERIENCE - Experience in winning - and losing - campaigns. (You need BOTH of those experiences to learn anything!)

for FLIGHTS - check the Travel for Change, run by Stanford, specifically for Frequent Flyer miles exchanges.

While Obama showed much more concern and compassion for the person that was fainting (and passed back his water to them), he could have touched base again at the end of his 'talk' by checking in on them (perhaps he did and we don't know, but let us know). Don't get me wrong, I think Obama was alert enough to know what's going on in the crowd, which is admirable, and caring enough to assess the situation and offer his water while the EMTs helped them. This is all awesome and well beyond what I would ever expect from any politican and shows by his actions that he genuinely cares for people. This being said, I also would like to push Obama closer to perfection, and having him close up with getting back in touch to see if they are ok would be more than awesome.

oh, and great job staying on message. Obama 'rocks'!

Thanks for your response as it shows I was not as clear as I had hoped to be.

As I said, I think Obama did awesome and no I don't expect perfection, in fact I expect inperfection.

I suspect you misread the tone of my post and that is my failing as I obviously didn't write it clear enough. I'll repeat, Obama did awesome, great and the only thing I think he could have done a bit better is close by checking in the the person. I think it's a valid criticism and could have helped him talk a bit how 'we are our brothers keeper' in a way that could tie health care, compassion and the great job that EMTs do. For many without health insurance even an EMT trip to the hospital could be the difference between making the mortgage payment or having to drop out of school.

My point was that despite his near perfect performance, there was room for improvement. My post was intended as constructive criticism, in other words, what we liked, and how we could do it even better. While I can understand people being a bit hyper in this super heated campaign (and crazy time), I don't think we should ignore where we can improve.

In any event I appreciate your response, and as I noted Obama may have followed up afterwards, but perhaps the tone was not clear.

I agree with you that we don't see everything on video and the way he handled it showed genuine compassion. I recall a meeting with a student months ago who started to cry and Obama comforted her in a way that only genuine compassion and empathy can do. Obama definately cares about people in a way that I've never seen in any politican in my lifetime. My post in no way whatsoever (I hope that is clear enough) is meant as anything other than face value.

I guess what I may have been feeling is that I would have some fear that as the campaign becomes more and more heated, the pressure of delivering his message may cause a subtext for undecided voters.

I definately agree with you that everything is not a photo op, yet we are in a campaign that 'anything you say can and will be used against you'. I think Obama has done and continue to handle both.

By the way, people always faint at Obama's event. Waiting in line for hours; not being hydrated and being without food. This comes as no surprise to him; it happens on a regular basis. He doesn't over-react because he has seen it numerous times.

People have been fainting at his rallies for almost 2 years now, espec. when it's hot and crowded.

The EMT's were there as someone fainted as well earlier, while one of the other introducers was speaking.

I'm sure he was made aware if anything happened. O is not about grabbing the spotlight,i.e. running into the crowd (and for security reasons he cannot) and there was not much he personally could do. He knew they were being attended to. No worries! :)

I have to admit you did make me laugh a bit with the image of Obama running through the crowd to help.

I do hear what you are saying and it was not my intent to suggest that Obama do anything other than he did. And yes, he has shown compassion and had similar situations in the past.

And I guess my post was taken as some huge criticism, which it definately was not the intent. The intent was to say he handles it very well and it shows he cares. It was not my intent to make it into a big issue, it's not. It was a heads up that people that might view Obama with a negative bias may interpret the lack of final closure (and i repeat that closure can be offcamera and off the record) in a different way than we do. I'm not suggesting panic, i'm not saying that if we don't do this the sky will fall. It's a very small and presently unimportant item. What we don't want to do is exagerate it (which having to respond to my original post means it's already blown out of proportion - so apologies to all for that) nor forget that we have potential for a video clip that ends up like the "cling to guns" clip (blown out of proportion).

We just need to remain sensitive to that potential, that's all.. no biggie.

Couple things.

Reading Joe's book-picked it up from the library today. I love it. It is not Steinbeck, but a compelling, really touching memoir of more than just the VP pick, but one of a guy who overcame a lot of stuff to be where he is. He reminds me of my dad. a lifelong bus driver who worked in a welding plant when NJ Transit went on strike for a long time.

I read and I thought, and I pondered to myself how these two guys fit; Barack from Hawaii and Joe from Scranton and as I read I thought about how both these men had to overcome obstacles in their lives. The deal is: overcoming those obstacles made both more empathetic and real men. I think as time goes on they will beocme like brothers.

So, good reading. I must say:
I LOVE THIS TICKET! I love these guys. If there was ever a better American story than a single mom minority kid from Hawaii and a scrappy Irish kid from the streets of suburban Philly, I dont know of it.

Come on. Can we really look at John McCain(yes I respect his POW status-my uncles and dad were all in WWII and I am a war respecter) and his new Side Kick Sarah, (we have stooped so low in the Republican race) and give any time or credence at all to THAT ticket? John McCain himself looked embarassed. Yes he did. I think John is not really happy to be forced to take on the Alaskan homemaker to be his second. I think that will be his unraveling.

Because he has three children-- he also had two of them in the hospital for a long time. He recently took out a second mortgage on his home to send one of his children to college and the current downturn in housing values does not exempt Senators. Most of his net worth is tied up in his home's value-- as is most of the net worth of most home-owning Americans. His house is calculated into his net worth-- as are his two mortgages on that home.

I'm 51 years old and have been a life long republican. My father (God rest his soul) was a republican. Now as I have witnessed our economy decline, the lives of many including myself change dramatcially for the worst over the past 8 years...I'm ready for a change. I'm voting for Obama for President and not just hoping for change. I am confident there will be change. For the first time in 8 years I am confident in the future of America. Well..... Governor Palin does seem like a very nice woman, who decided to get involved in public service. I have known and do know people like that-- many of them are very good, decent people. One even ran for Senate -- and I wish he had won, it would have been good for his state. Yet, none of them-- with the possible exception of the boy I knew in highschool who went on to run for U.S. Senate-- is remotely qualified to be President. Governor Palin is not qualified either. Perhaps she is a very quick learner and Senator McCain can teach her what she needs to know in the short time left (what is it now 65? days?), but I doubt anyone can absorb that much that fast. I don't think Einstein could do it.

This selection is rather insulting to Senator Clinton, who WAS qualified to be President, no matter what else anyone might think about her. If Governor Palin should win, her inexperience would rub out Senator Clinton's legacy, and leave her with a minor footnote if she is fortunate-- which would not be an accurate reflection of reality, in my own humble opinion. Senator Clinton's race WAS historic; this VP selection is politically convenient.

I can understand Mr. Carville's outrage. We are not interchangeable simply because we have the same gender. Women are unique-- and our qualifications, and lack thereof, are unique too.

Governor Palin is a nice woman, but she is an unqualified woman and it is insulting to Senator Clinton, in my opinion, to suggest that Governor Palin is filling Senator Clinton's shoes. I support Senator Obama and have done so since January. Please let's all try and read, 'lest we risk alienating people who are with us, yet can still be bruised.

This occurs because these threads fly so fast-- and we read to one word and then fly to respond. I know, I've done it myself. I have no stones to throw-- only a request. Please let's read before responding. That should help cut down on some misunderstandings, and perhaps some hurt feelings.

Didn't know where else to post this but thought it was interesting since Palin is saying that she vetoed the $$ from Washington on the "bridge to nowhere" and that if they wanted to build it, they would do it themselves....sounds below like she vetoed it because she didn't want to add any of Alaska's money to do it......GOTCHA

On Thursday I gave a very special homework assignment to the Fourth Graders I teach at a Title I school. I told my students that Thursday night they too could be "witnesses to history". Here are the results:

My students excitement couldn't wait until they got into our classroom Friday morning. They eagerly called out from the line by my classroom door,"Did you see him Ms. Adams?" "Did you see our new President?" "Did you see all those people at the football stadium?"

Thirteen out of sixteen of my students got to watch the speech. Two of the students even took notes, sharing the facts they had gathered about Sen. Obama. The level of detail truly amazed me. From the names of his daughters, to the name of his future Vice-President, these kids were really paying attention. When one student stated that Sen. Obama had gone to college at Harvard, he was "corrected" by another student, "No, no that's where he went to school to be a lawyer after he went to college!". When you know that very few of my students have anyone in their family that has attended college, you can appreciate what drawing that fine distinction means to a teacher.

Almost all of the students related that the adults that watched with them "laughed" at some parts of the speech, but that almost everyone cried. What impressed the kids most were the pictures of the people in the audience and the fact that there were so many white people crying and cheering a black man. The other thing they noticed was how quiet the people were. "They were really paying attention to every word he said". As a teacher these two comments warmed my heart: "Obama speaks formal English like you've been teaching us Ms. Adams. Now I know what you mean about it being important to learn to talk like that." And my favorite, "Obama has a really, really big vocabulary Ms. Adams. He used lots of different words. What does "insplicable" (inexplicable) mean Ms. Adams? I like the sound of that word." As a teacher, I'm looking forward to Sen. Obama providing me many "teachable" vocabulary moments over the next few months and years, woo hoo!

Thursday night Barack Obama made history, but he also made an immediate difference in 16 lives. He changed the way my students look at themselves, the importance of their education and the possibilities open to them if they "go to school and work hard like Sen. Obama" , as one girl said. Fortunately for our country, Barack Obama is a formidable candidate, but for a teacher like me, he is also a priceless role model.

Palin's record on reproductive choice makes it very clear that she is not a candidate that will respect the rights of American women. Now more than ever, we need to see Michelle, Jill Biden, Hillary, Chelsea, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, and Oprah Winfrey in the swing states. MSNBC and CNN surprisingly showed almost all of these speeches by Biden and Obama. MSNBC switched to Gustav in the middle of Obama's speech, but CNN continued to show it, with a small window for Gustav. I was surprised.

Barack looked like he had a little 'hangover' - fatigue is a better word- from the convention. It took him a while to get into the flow of the speech. He attacked McCain consistently, but I would have liked him to drop some of the lengthy introduction and get to the point faster. The crowd responded well.

I must share with you some experiences I am having with other women.

First of all, my hair dresser. She and I have become good friends over the years, even though she is a republican. She did not know that Palin was anti-choice. She just assumed that Palin would be pro-choice. I had to tell her all about Palin. She will not change her vote (for McCain) but at least she will not give false info about Palin to others.

Second, which is more serious, because it is about several women on another blog. They were pro-Hillary and now they are strong anti-Obama. They could easily be members of PUMA. They are strongly defending Palin, and they refuse to believe anything negative about her. In fact they believe she has executive experience by virtue of her being a governor. They believe none of the other candidates (Obama, Biden, McCain) have that experience. This is insane! I don't believe this group is open to differing opinions, but I did my job by posting information about Palin.

Finally, I am horrified to watch the poll that asked if Palin is ready to be president, and 39% actually said YES. Are these people crazy, or they just believe that any white person can be president? I am sorry for sounding so racist (and I am not AA). I remember how harshly Obama was criticized and scrutinized during the primaries.

Carter said race will be an important factor in this election and I believe him. That is why our work is going to be so difficult and it is so important.

I saw that same poll. It is mind boggling. Hopefully, I can cheer you up a little bit with my story. I was an avid Hillary supporter. I even joined Puma early on, but, admittedly, haven't really been an active member, mostly observing on the sidelines. After hearing Hillary speak last Tuesday, I realized that dream was over, and I could have either gone with Puma's voting for McCain and hoping Hillary would have a chance in 4 years from now or join Obama. I struggled with that decision, but realized the stakes are just way too high to try to wait it out for 4 years, and besides that, there are no guarantees, even if Obama were to lose, what would happen 4 years from now. When I heard Obama speak on Thursday, that was pretty much it for me. I ordered my car magnet that night and signed up here. Any remaining concerns and questions I had about him he resolved for me with everything he said in his speech. The next morning, when I watched, horrified as McCain paraded this ignorant, self-absorbed, power hungry, woman out on the stage and introduced her as his running mate, not only will I be supporting Obama, but I will do whatever I can to make sure he is elected.

I also was at my hairdresser's on Friday, and there were several other women in there. ALL of them were Hillary supporters, but they are now all Obama supporters.

I saw Darragh Murphy on Hardball the other night (founder of Puma). Believe me, after seeing her and listening to her, she is not someone I would follow anywhere.

if you are talking about what's written here, then yeah, I agree that we need to focus.

I don't, however, mind that the narrative has moved from Barack's speech, though. That speech doesn't need to be over-blown or analyzed. It did what it need to do and touched who it needed to touch. I was afraid it might be Obama Overload, but McCain prevented that. So no worries on that front.

Obama now looks like the real deal. His is a real movement in comparison to McCain's games. A good and sharp contrast.

There is something called "karma"in Buddhism. It means:

"We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own Heaven. We create our own Hell. We are the architects of our own fate."

The bible says: "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." (Galatians 6:7 KJV)

The rumors have been rife concerning John McCain's VP pick. Briefly, there seems to have been indiscretions and poor judgement on the part of the new VP. Shabby attempts at coverups and tawdriness make for very poor politics. It is alleged that she fires people who do not do her bidding and hides indiscretions concerning herself and her family members.

Distasteful to talk about except for the fact that John McCain has made a dreadful error. Has his mental acuity gone downhill so rapidly that he thinks this woman could be president in case of his demise? What horrific judgement.

John McCain has let his impulses for beauty queens go to his head. He has jumped the proverbial gun on this one. He was so eager to try to gain a political lead...he was so panic-stricken by the depth and scope of all who were united - about 38 million watched Barack's speech? - to encourage and accept the nomination of Barack Obama that he over-shot the mark.

The Republicans were slow to act on Katrina. They supposedly prayed for rain for Barack's speech. Well there was no rain but tears were streaming down the faces of all the men and women. There were no hurricanes but the winds of change were blowing.

Now the Republicans are gathering and the hurricanes and floodgates are open and the torrents are pouring down. They are exposed and they must not stand. I know this sounds silly but I remember in The Fellowship of the Ring when Gandalf stands on this little stone path between the horrible Balrog monster and the true ringbearer who must be protected. As the monster approached Gandalf slammed down his staff and said "YOU MUST NOT PASS".

The Republicans must not stand or pass or continue. The heavens are opening, the ends of the earth are responding, they are defeated and they are swept away by their bad karma. The people are watching and wondering at these events. Read the signs, everyone and remember that they "must not pass"

I would urge Obama and Biden to go first-hand to the Gulf Coast re Hurricane Gustav. Although Obama's comment that his large traveling contingent would prove a distraction is valid, think what happened when Barack cancelled his plans to visit injured troops in Germany. This would be much worse. McCain is already going to an evacuation center in MS today. IMO, to be seen campaigning when people are in peril would be an issue the nasty Republicans would pounce upon in a heartbeat. Leave the press behind and show the people of the Gulf Coast you are truly with them!

Obama, expressed to us, all 38+million, that it was not about him...that it was about US! all of US - United States of America, WE NEED TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN THIS CAUSE for him. AND, WE CAN DO IT!
To me No matter, the degree to which - what he says get's distorted or misinterpreted by the anti-intellectuals, the fact remains that what's Right and Righteous will always prevail!
