Getting Democrats registered to vote is an effort that can help deliver victory for us in November.

Please encourage people to visit the new VOTE FOR CHANGE website Link
At this site people will be able to: find out if they are registered to vote; get registered to vote; apply to vote absentee; plus find their early vote location.

You can hand out slips of paper to people printed with the VOTE FOR CHANGE web address. Or you can find voter registration forms to print out for each state at the Board of Elections links below. You’ll also find contact information at these sites so you can call and ask about voter registration requirements.

Registering can be a pretty quick and simple process. It literally takes me about two minutes to get a registration form completed. I keep a stack of registration forms with me and just in going about my day, I have been able to register sales clerks, waiters, people at sporting events, and even the plumber who was fixing our faucet!

I think we have done a fantastic job so far. Yet there is more we can do. One thing in particular that I find lacking is helping people figure out where they should register to vote. This is particularly problematic for college students, people that have moved around - perhaps out and back into the country, etc.

The step of figuring out which state to register is can be a stumbling block to some. Do I register in the last place i voted? the mailing address in the US where I get my mail? Perhaps the state where I spend most of my time in the states?

While there is a relatively straightforward list of questions to help people decide where to register, more help in working through the legal issues of where someone has to register (or at least what the legal options are) would assist college students and others that have moved around. You may have a studen that has moved and settled full time in a new state, but with a mailing address of his parents home, or a student that is not in school this term, but living in another state anyway.

One way to address these complexities is to provide a 'hotline' that we can call and talk to an 'expert' that can help us answer the 'where should I be registered' questions. Perhaps there already is such a service, and if so having that with the post on registering to vote would help.

Shocking Choice by John McCain

WASHINGTON-- Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.

“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

“Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

“This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.”

Can someone help me understand this? I know there are some republicans out there spying on our blogs. So, if you're out there, explain to me how it can be said that a Mayor of a community of 8000 (1/10 of the amount people who showed up at Invesco) and 2 year (not two-term), two-year Governor can be better qualified to be President than two US Senators? They say, "She has more executive experience" than Senators Obama and Biden combined. Well, doesn't that also include McSame? So, it seems to me, McPTSD chose his running mate because she shores up a weakness in him. He has limited no executive experience and he doesn't know the economy. Or, is it because “She’s exactly who I need” as he says. That speaks volumes. She completes him, after all Cindy is getting long in the tooth. He does have a precedent for trading in wives for younger models.
They (republicans) think we’re dumb. McCain accused Senator Obama of making decisions based on politics so, what does that say about him? After all, he did say in one of his books, “Being President was an ambition…” so, doesn’t this move indicate he’d rather win an election rather that make a decision that is in the best interest of the country. So, now between the two of them, their campaign is now a popularity contest and a beauty pageant. What? You may ask do I mean. Think about it. After Thursday if McCain’t can not continue the campaign, she becomes the republican candidate for the Presidency. Think about that for a minute. Kind of makes you go hmmmmm. What a scary thought. Her only foreign policy experience is she has a son in the military. Oh, sorry, she is commander-in-chief of the Alaskan National Guard. It is clear McShame is pandering to the extreme right and the so-called disgruntled Hillary supporters. I wonder if Hillary’s people know she called her a whinner? That seems to be a favorite word of the republicans today

Democrats you’re funny. Let’s discuss Obama, first of all experience, what is more important, an inexperienced president or vice president?
Obama is going to be in training himself. He does not have the training on most issues that the president needs to have. But, on top of that he has not been Mayor of a city, and has no executive experience. So now are you going to allow a president with no experience to learn by his mistakes? We as a country will suffer more than ever, because he will make mistakes that will cause this country to be vulnerable. He has already said "HE WANTS TO SLOW DOWN THE DEVELOPEMENT OF OUR DEFENSE". This would be the dumbest thing ever. That is what Clinton did and that is the reason why we were vulnerable and got attacked all those times while he was in office and on 9/11. He closed down bases, cut our troops in half and stop the development of defense systems.
Now you dems talk about change, well even a blind person can see that change has happened in the last 8 years. We are a stronger country throughout and better than ever. No one wants to mess with us now. We are safer everywhere, our military is strong and well equipped.
Obama’s not scary; hell a baby would mess with him. At least McCain is strong when it comes to his guts, knowledge and he will keep this country from being attacked again. I know people in the military that are waiting to reenlist, because if Obama becomes president, they are getting out. They do not want him as their commander and Chief.
As for the military, don't talk about us, we make our choices based on patriotism. When we join, we join knowing that we may have to go to war. That is our job. We believe in what we are doing and volunteered to do it. Stop talking about us like you know what we want and need. Our pay and lively hood is better than ever. Bush and McCain have made sure that we are appreciated. After all if it weren't for the brave men and women this country would not be what it is today.

And speaking of the military, what about Genocide, everybody wines about Darfur, but do they remember what happened to the people of Iraq? This was a great case of genocide, those people deserved to be free. We never had a war against the people of Iraq; we had a beef with the leader who allowed his own people to be killed, and housed terrorist. We are helping those people, it takes an education and we are educating them. Take a look at all the countries that have been to war, most of them we help rebuild and educate and now they are thriving. Our own country was not what it is today, and it was due to our ancestors fighting for our rights. It took education all along the way.

WASHINGTON-- Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.

“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

“Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

Last night's speech was a masterpiece. I am glad to hear not only the promise of change, but the actual way in which it will be carried out.

However, I would like to comment on something that struck me as very odd. Today I was watching International Correspondents on CNN International, and saw a French journalist complaining passionately, and rightly so, about the discrimination towards the foreign press from the Obama camp. It seems they are not treated with the same access and coverage opportunities as the American press. This journalist's description was quite vivid, indicating that, for example, the foreign press has to share one single pass among them all.

As an American living abroad, this hits a very low note. I understand that most voters live in the US and, therefore, the US press needs access. However, if one preaches better foreign policy, one must demonstrate better foreign policy from the get-go. The above anecdote is in no way a step in the right direction.

So yes, go Obama Biden! But show some respect for the foreign press. Because they shape public opinion around the world. And they will be one of your key allies once the dust settles after the election.

That's why I watched every single minute on CSPAN! I don't need the MSM pundits to tell me what I heard, saw or think!

The broadcast networks and possibly security people may have had control of the number of press allowed. Did that gentleman consider that? Did you?

In any case, there hasn't been any instance of the BO campaign "dissing" anyone so why blame him?

BO has an excellent relationship with the foreign press; could this guy have been acting to make trouble in the French/European countries?

Think for yourself and consider everything before leaping to conclusions.

security is a big factor for the obama campaign. not just any and everyone can get access. trust me some press here were nagging because they did not get to go with him. obama cannot please all and his security should be first priority over any press coverage. imo.

Thanks for your replies. As much as I support Obama, I wanted to point this out. It might be the DNC, as you say. Nevertheless, I believe the Obama campaign should make sure everyone is treated equally. This French journalist was infuriated, saying that because of the way they were treated, she couldn't call her job actual "journalism."

I hope the Obama camp takes note of this, whether they or the DNC are responsible, and makes the appropriate changes.

The argument about security, honestly, doesn't run when you have free access for the American press and not for the foreign press. Or are you suggesting that the French press is somehow a threat? That is exactly a statement worthy of Bush and his party. It reminds when, during a Presidential Debate, Bush said he wanted to make sure "Canadian drugs don't kill ya".

Wow, it took me so long to get this posted, a new thread had already started so I will cut and paste it.

I just have to say this...these two remind me of Tim Conway's 'little old man' and Karen Walker from Will and Grace!

Thanks to everyone who posted links with more info. My husband is an Alaska Native (Haida), born and raised there. I spent 16 years working there all over the state as an EMS Coordinator. I love Alaska with all my heart.

That being said...

Alaska is a huge state with a relatively low population (500,000+) and a whole lot of oil money. They give a yearly dividend to all the residents out of the oil money. The lowest I ever received was $700 and the highest was $2400.

With just a few people and a lot of money it is an easy place to govern. As I recall, the biggest political debate reoccurred every election cycle and was whether or not to move the capitol from Juneau to Anchorage (seriously, we went through that enormous challenge every 4 years.) I first lived in Sitka, then in Juneau, but have traveled the entire state a lot. Being mayor of Wasilla just isn't impressive on a potential VP resume. Neither, in my humble opinion, is 21 months of Governor experience.

I shouldn't say this, because I have always been a working mother. But I heard Rachel Maddow tell a story that Palin was in Texas this spring when her water broke. AFTER that happened, she went on to give her speech, then boarded a plane and flew straight back to Alaska (at least 4-5 hours minimum.) I'm sorry, but as a mother and as a former medical professional, I find that to be terribly irresponsible for a 44 year old woman, (can you say 'high risk pregnancy') to be traveling that late into her pregnancy and risking a lot to fly home after her water broke.

On the computer I'm on I can not have Flash09.ocx enabled. In other words I go to Tools.. Manage add ons... and I disable Shockwave Flash - or IE (and even Mozilla Firefox) crash and close out IE.

It is my little crux of computer insanity - so I have another computer I use if I must see the vids.

First let me tell you straight out that if you were to look up my voter registration, you would discover that I’m a Republican. And if you could track my voting history, you would learn I primarily vote for Democrats.

But I’m not writing to discuss my voting idiosyncrasies. I’m writing to express my discouragement.

Back in the 90s I believed the Monica Lewinski scandal would blow over. Voters may have been titillated, but I felt they would recognize all that the Clinton administration had done for ordinary people in this country. I believed they would not confuse the President’s lapse of personal judgment with Vice President Gore’s character and intellect. I cast my vote convinced no one in their right mind would vote for George W. Bush.

I was devastated at the outcome of the 2000 election.

I was disappointed in Kerry as a candidate, but in 2004 after the public erosion of our Constitutional rights and the disclosure of this nation’s torture of Prisoners of War—no matter what their “legal status is”—who would have thought it possible for Kerry to lose? Yet he did.

Democrats gained a majority in both houses of Congress in 2004; however, we are worse off as a nation four years later.

I feel the stir of hope inside me whenever I hear Senator Obama speak; but I suppress it. I'm no longer certain that it is possible for a man of vision and healing to get elected.

Democrats need to focus on the environment, the Constitution, the nation’s infrastructure, New Orleans, the war, and the economy. But Senator Obama and other Democrats are going to have a hard time convincing us that they will do actually do anything about these problems considering their do-nothing record during the past four years.

I hate to put it this way, but actually Bill Clinton and the Democratic controlled Congress had our whole country thriving.

And GWB and his republican controlled Congress were able to get stuff done, it's just their agenda took us to the path we are in.

Obama will get much done with him in the White house, and a democratic controlled congress, just like Clinton did.

Sad to say, but you need both parties controlling both branches, or else you get nothing but gridlock.

It's hard to get much done with a Republican president in office and a very slim majority in the Senate. It's hard to get much done with your hands tied behind your back. Vote for a Democratic President and watch what the Democrats can do.

You know what? If I were Hillary Clinton, I would be really unhappy about the way Sarah Palin tried to basically steal Hillary's mantle today. After all the work Hillary has done throughout her life, and 18 long months of campaigning, and this less than 2-year governor is going to make history and Hillary isn't? I don't think that's going to make Hillary Clinton very happy. I think John McCain has completely disrespected her with this choice. Just my take.

By putting in Sara ? as his running mate, McCain has shown more than lack of judgement. He has shown that he puts McCain first. The first criteria of the running mate should be, as Barack said, 'can this person become the commander in chief if something happens to me?. It is clear that the only thing Sara ? could be is a senior administrative assistant. So the answer to that first question, the one that separates each candidate from the other, is an equivical NO. Yet, McCain, old, dilusional and sick, puts a person in 2nd place who could be literally a heartbeat away from running this country if, god forbid, he is elected. A person who at best could lead the PTA. This is the most irresponsible decision that he could ever make. “Is this a joke?” That seemed to be the question du jour when my phone started ringing off the hook at 6:45am here in Alaska. I mean, we’re sort of excited that our humble state has gotten some kind of national ‘nod’….but seriously? Sarah Palin for Vice President? Yes, she’s a popular governor. Her all time high approval rating hovered around 90% at one point. But bear in mind that the 90% approval rating came from one of the most conservative, and reddest-of-the-red states out there. And that approval rating came before a series of events that have lead many Alaskans to question the governor’s once pristine image.

There is no doubt in my mind that many Alaskans are feeling pretty excited about this. But we live in our own little bubble up here, and most of the attention we get is because of The Bridge to Nowhere, polar bears, the indictment of Ted Stevens, and the ongoing investigation and conviction of the string of legislators and oil executives who literally called themselves “The Corrupt Bastards Club”.

So seeing our governor out there in the national spotlight accepting the nomination for Vice Presidential candidate is just downright surreal. Just months ago, when rumors surfaced that she was on the long version of the short list, she was questioned if she’d be interested in the position. She said she couldn’t answer “until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day. I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here….”

There is no doubt that Palin has fierce territorial loyalties. When elected governor there was much concern because she came right out and said she would favor her own home town of Wasilla (where she was mayor) and its surrounding environs collectively known as “the Valley” while leading the state. And it’s obvious from her statement that Alaska was on her mind when accepting the VP nod (see my emphasis above).

So what is it that we’re “trying to accomplish up here”?

Obama punched McCain in the stomach hard last night. In response McCain, who knew Obama would give a good speech, decided to distract. In fact, since Obama's return from London McCain has been all about news cycle distraction.

Obama's speech was viewed by more 38M people plus the PBS and C-SPAN viewership which is not included in these numbers. Normally cable networks who cover Sarah Palin got about 5M viewers.

Regardless, Sarah Palin in theory addresses several fundamental McCain deficits.

1. Enthusiasm gap. Evangelicals are giddy about this. They will organize in their churches with their ppt presentations claiming that democrats eat babies for lunch. The have an extensive organization in OH from the previous election.

2. Reform. By picking someone outside DC McCain picked someone who has some credible record of reform, even if it is Alaska.

3. Western states. There's little evidence that contemporary VP picks influence elections much but her selection will probably help in CO and MT.

4. Compete. During the convention Plouffe said he is laser-focused in white suburban female voters. Well I don't know how much she will help but the McCain campaign seems to agree with Plouffe on that.

5. Stop Obama's momentum. Distracting from a perfect 38M+ viewership and great comments even by republican commentators.

6. Make his photos, well photogenic. If you think that photos/beauty don't matter you need to wake up.

7. Victimization. Well as I wrote in my diary yesterday they hope that attacks against Palin will awaken the fired up sexist sensitivities. For example CNN wondered if Palin would be able to cater for her 5 month old down syndrome kid and govern. That is a SEXIST comment. Would anybody ask the same question of a father with 5 kids?

The way to attack Palin is very simple: Ask her about foreign policy and east coast problems all the time. All the time.

Has she ever been abroad?
Has she ever met with any foreign leader?
What are her opinions on Iraq and Afghanistan?
What's her proposal about curbing inner city violence?

we must SHOW people she is waaaaay unqualified. But we need to let her do this to herself not lecture people about it. take her seriously and call McCain's bluff.

Great advice. I'm sure we'll see this play out. My hope is that when (if?) she is on MSM shows, that they do ask her the tough questions you listed.

The good news already is that the average person has already figured out that if McCain kicks the bucket, a very under qualified individual will be running the country. This is a deal breaker - McCain rolled the dice and has lost right out of the gate.

I canvassed many homes and talked to several everyday average people (like myself) all over the country today - and they are already moving to Obama in droves.

We cannot let this ultraconservative, backward thinking ticket slip through the doors of the White House. I'll be out again tomorrow knocking, talking, walking for Obama and well as calling in the evening. On Sunday, I'll be helping with voter registration.

One thing this ticket has done is fire me up so high that the roof of my mouth is burning!

I helped with the Obama campaign for the primary. Due to my panic disorder, which came back hard after a year or so, I chose to pull myself out and support from a far. But after Obama's great speech and seeing how McCain uses woman as nothing but political gimicks, I am volunteering again. There is too much at stake, and I cannot set on the side lines. I am worried about the panic attacks, but I am going forward. I am not writing this to say poor me. Trust me, I have been blessed in this life, but I just want to say, we all have to get aboard. History is judging us. Do what ever you can, and I promise to do the same.

Jess ... I understand panic attacks. I suffered them after miscarrying a baby, as soon as I was pregnant again, and know how debilitating they can be. Thankfully, they passed once my daughter was safely delivered, but my heart goes out to you as I will never forget how they made me feel.

But you know, I think that getting out and "fighting" in this campaign may be helpful to you. Give it a shot - and let us know how you do. I am proud of you for even trying!!!

The State of Alaska will sue to challenge the recent listing of polar bears as a threatened species, Gov. Sarah Palin said Wednesday.

She and other Alaska elected officials fear a listing will cripple oil and gas development in prime polar bear habitat off the state's northern and northwestern coasts.
Palin argued there is not enough evidence to support a listing. Polar bears are well-managed and their population has dramatically increased over 30 years as a result of conservation, she said.

Climate models that predict continued loss of sea ice, the main habitat of polar bears, during summers are unreliable, Palin said.

True enough but those GOOD OLE BOYS LOVE SOMEONE WHO IS INFLUENCED BY BIG OIL. Her husband works for BP and her policies on wildlife, energy and climate are biased by this connection. Those good ole boys are salivating at the thought of drilling all over Alaska!

Well, let's be honest. It's no mystery. There's almost no doubt that either the McCain campaign or somebody close to Palin is responsible for the unethical whitewashing of history just hours before her candidacy was revealed.

This is of course a major no-no for Wikipedia. NPR reports. And their source is unimpeachable: a pro-Palin Wikipedia editor.

I got the same feeling about Biden months before he was chosen as vp except my feelings about Biden were nothing but positive. There is something about Palin that doesn't meet the eye. This will come to light--maybe sooner than later.
