Rick in Tallahassee, Florida spent yesterday afternoon hosting a Unite for Change event. Earlier in the week, Rick told the campaign about why he wanted to host an event. He said…
Like most Americans, Tallahasseans want to set our country back on course. We're tired of the sagging economy, the threat of home foreclosures, and $4 gas. As Florida's capital city, Tallahassee has a large number of state and municipal employees who understand that, in order to change government, you've got to stand up and get involved. We're standing up to take our country back, and by hosting a Unite for Change event, we're reaching out to more people and building the movement that will make it happen.
His event was a success. He and his guests went above and beyond to get people involved in their community.
We just finished our Unite for Change meeting, and it was terrific. Seventy-two attendees came FIRED UP and ready to go! We gave an overview of our work to date, and passed around the newspaper photo of Wednesday's "Sign-waving for Obama" event in front of our state capitol building. Voter registration is the number one priority for now, but we also talked about phone banking, canvassing neighborhoods, and providing visibility at events like football games and large concerts. We then gave details of our next big volunteer event, to be held at Tallahassee's upcoming Fourth of July festival. With more than 30,000 people coming for the music, food, and the best fireworks in North Central Florida, this will be an excellent opportunity for Obama volunteers to get the word out. And what better way to celebrate the birth of our nation than to help change it? We'll be registering voters, passing out lapel stickers, and talking with folks about electing Barack Obama! Before closing our meeting, we passed out call sheets, and asked everyone in the room to make enough calls to complete two sheets apiece (that's about 25 voters each). Using our cell phones, we called infrequently voting Democrats, collected their email addresses, and encouraged them to sign up for Vote-By-Mail ballots so they'll be more likely to vote in November. By the time we finished, we had called hundreds of phone numbers... all of which will be updated in our voter file database. Our Unite for Change meeting was just another example of how Tallahasseans are mobilized to create change in this country. In fact, as they left, several people told us they were heading to one of the other Unite for Change meetings taking place later this afternoon!
