"If by a Liberal, they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a Liberal, then I'm proud to say I'm a Liberal."
-- President John F. Kennedy
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but morally treasonable to the American public"
-- President Theodore Roosevelt
"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves"
-- President Abraham Lincoln

The quote by President Theodore Roosevelt is particularly timely to post as opposing campaigns encourage voters to consider patriotism when assessing qualifications for the president.
Your posting of Roosevelt's quote is also quite timely as the memory of the "Mission Accomplished" banner of May 2003 should be a sign when viewed against to today's headlines as proof of where blind faith in a leader can lead.
If at the time of a 5 year anniversary of a pre-emptive war - proven to have been started for reasons we now know to be false - is not the right time to question our leadership, when is? Why does wearing a flag on your lapel and vowing blind loyalty and a "never say die" attitude equate to "proof" that you love your country?
At a time when the current administration and Republican candidate continue to support, justify and change the goal posts for victory, I hope the American public will take heed in President Theodore Roosevelt's words - and John McCain and the current adminstration will consider Abraham Lincoln's advice offered in the quote you posted.
Regarding the JFK quote about being a Liberal - I will share that I am sick to death of being labeled a "Liberal" by "Compassionate Conservatives" whose policy stances and actions prove their alleged identity is nothing more than an oxymoron.
Cheers and thanks for your posting.
