Saturday, January 5th:
I've been in Massachusetts for the last 2 weeks, on vacation with my family and I want to share my experience from just over the NH border.
Like most of us, I tuned in to the Iowa primaries with a child-like anticipation. When the news stations started calling it for Obama, I started jumping up and down like a maniac. Then I calmed down and found myself shedding tears of relief. We really can elect Barack Obama as our next President.
I was up half the night on January 3rd, surfing the blogs for insider comments.
But as I read up on views from around the nation, I started to get worried. Even though the Iowa winner is the likeliest candidate to win the nomination, posts started coming in which tried to downplay the win.
"Wait for New Hampshire" was the talking point from the right and many newspapers have been regurgitating that message for the last 48 hours.
Rather than get worried, I talked it over with my wife and decided to spend a day, just 19 miles over the border from where my in-laws live, campaigning for Obama in NH. At the end of the day, here is my report:
I am NOT worried. I am pumped.
I joined three "undecided" voters (we all met online for a carpool) to attend the Nashua, NH rally. The rally created a traffic jam which backed up half of town, making us over 40 mins late. By the time we parked (about half a mile away) and got to the high school, there was a stream of people leaving because they couldn't get in.
We weren't about to turn back. Just as we walked up to the high school, the campaign opened up the old gymnasium and filled it. Over 3,000 people were there. I got lucky again by walking right up to the guard rails where I knew he would come by. 5 minutes later, Obama took the stage.
You see, they had filled the stadium to capacity and the gym to capacity, so he had no choice but to speak to two crowds today.
It was the speech we all know, with a few comfortable jokes thrown in. I left with 3 "decided" voters. On the way out, I was interviewed on live TV by Bloomberg, then a few minutes later by the Huffington Post. Then my companions were interviewed by IFC Television and everyone had the same answer: "The man has integrity. He is authentic. He is honest."
I'll add: "He's a Hope-Monger."
There's your field report from Methuen, MA.
I cannot thank you all enough for leading Western North Carolina.
Be well and start saying it out loud: "President Obama!"
