Ethanol | Report to Admin

Using food based crops to produce ethanol is the worst idea ever. I would vote for McCain on this sole issue. Using corn to power our cars is just another government handout to farmers like the farm bill. Do you plan to give farmers money to not grow crops while subsidizing them to grow corn for ethanol? It's a lose, lose situation for the tax payer. Moreover, there is not enough farmland in our country to grow enough corn for ethanol and various other crops for food. In addition the total carbon emitted by ethanol production is about the same if not more than the same amount of oil. Its' environmental sustainability is a hoax. Furthermore, if you plan to support ethanol, at least lift the embargo on Brazilian sugar cane and stop subsidizing corn based ethanol. For if you don't you're giving the tax payer and the environment a raw deal.

I just noticed this comment. Ethanol from food, such as corn is the old version 1.0 of making ethanol. Cellulosic Ethanol is the new ver 2.0 way of producing ethanol from non food items, such as sewage, grass, wood chip, etc..

Additionally - if you are really interested in helping the US and the world go green and contribute positivity to the cause.

I appreciate "Joe's" comments here about the problems with plant-based alternatives to fossil fuel, but c'mon Joe, it's silly to suggest that the earth does better on this or any other environmental issue with McCain and the Republicans in the White House!

Instead, we environmentalists need to take responsibility for insuring that the Obama administration does right by the environment once elected. Under Clinton, too many of us feared loosing our access to hold his feet to the fire on many environmental issues.

We can't blame Barak for the fact that many many environmentalists and organizations put forth biodiesel as the solution when the problems Joe details here are there. His policies are based on the advocacy organizations' positions to a large extent, so we need to come up with more sustainable suggestions and make sure we engage his advisers as soon as he is elected to put forth something better.

Another critical error in Obama's energy policy that concerns me is the support he mentioned during his acceptance speech at the DNC, for "Clean Nuclear Energy." There is currently no such thing, and until someone figures out how to safely dispose of nuclear waste, this is a fantasy. Any attempt ever made at disposal of nuclear waste has caused cancer to often poor, indigenous, or communities of color, and permanent toxification of the land that is an unacceptable burden on wildlife and future generations.

I am glad those three words were not listed in this document on Obama's positions on the environment. Once Obama is President, we must all work to defeat the nuclear industry lobbyists and make sure that nuclear power plants are not being built in the name of green energy.

Many of us who are dedicated to this approach are volunteering our time to phone bank for Obama in swing states to help get out the vote, and voting for Nader/Gonzalez or McKinney/Clemente in "safe" Obama territory like California, to demonstrate the demand for MORE PROGRESSIVE policies on the environment and foreign policy. We are most powerful when we can either deliver or withhold votes. We can help give Obama the LEVERAGE he needs to be even more GREEN by showing a strong percentage for these third party candidates, without jeopardizing the outcome of the election. We must think beyond November 4th, 2008 and get ready to STAY engaged!
