Rebecca of Eagan, Minnesota is a newcomer to political campaigns. She has never been involved in politics before and has never focused on any of the candidates. Last year Rebecca started to follow Barack’s campaign and now, at 64 years old, she is fully engaged as one of our top phonebankers in the country. She made more than 5,000 calls during the primaries and caucuses and logged over 700 calls to Ohio in July alone. Even from the suburban Midwest, Rebecca has had an impact on voters in cities and towns from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters. She has decided that this election is too important, and by making calls she play an active role in the campaign.
My brother lives in Iowa City and got involved there. When Barack won in Iowa I said, ‘Maybe I’ll volunteer.’ I work four days a week, but I decided that I would make time. I started calling and it was easy. The website is so well done. I’m not very computer literate, but it was simple: the next number to call came up on the screen, the script is there with what to say – it tells you everything.
After calling 14 states throughout the primaries, Rebecca admits to having some favorites. She liked calling North Carolina, Indiana and Mississippi most because “they were friendly, respectful and kind.”
Although there have been some unpleasant interactions, she found most people want to be engaged in this election. “I’ve been surprised,” she said. “There have been a few who said, ‘That’s my business,’ and hung up, but many are very polite and want to learn more.”
In this campaign, Rebecca has been inspired and empowered to help the campaign in any way she can. She believes deeply in Barack’s vision and the movement for change needed in our country. With the general election quickly approaching, she is determined to spread the message. Her calls have been fun and have produced some memorable stories.
I called a man whose wife was voting for the very first time. She is a big Barack supporter, and even though he is a lifelong Republican who finds it hard not to vote for Republicans, he said he is going to vote for Barack with her. She has all the kids involved.
Asked whether she plans on making calls for the general election, she said immediately, “Oh yeah, I already have. I call on weekends and every Wednesday I call during lunch at work.” In Barack, Rebecca sees someone “so caring and genuine; he’s the real deal.” She is dialing phone numbers and doing whatever she can to help win this election.
I have 12 nieces and nephews – they’re like children to me. Six are adopted of all races and it has been wonderful for our family … I want things to be better for my nieces and nephews. I want change for all of them.I just feel that if we let this opportunity pass by we will miss something that will make a huge difference for this country and the world.
