In order to participate in the caucus you have to be registered to vote. You're probably already registered, but make sure first-time voters and people new to the area know this step must be done in advance to participate in a caucus so they should arrive early that night.
On Feb 5th you can participate easily in the caucus just by showing up between 6:30 and 8 p.m. to mark your preference in the presidential race. The caucuses officially start at 7. If you don't have the time to stay and talk about other matters it's enough to just fill out that one ballot, which you should be able to do even before 7 - this is NOT like Iowa.
There are four processes anybody attending can participate in: Vote for their favorite Democratic candidate in the Presidential Preference Ballot Elect delegates to Senate District or County Unit Conventions Sign up to become a DFL election judge Pass resolutions to help develop the DFL Party's 2008 platform.
Because turnout is predicted to be larger than average, some caucuses are being moved to larger spaces. Northfield will likely be at the Middle School. The official sites will all be determined by the 15th. The county auditor is the ultimate authority, though the information is likely to be prominent in newspapers. The DFL website says you should be able to check the Secretary of State's online information to verify the location (or call toll-free at 800-999-7457) but presently that refers you back to the country auditor(s) and the DFL.
If you have any questions, drop me a note. If you need buttons or bumper stickers, drop me a note (yard signs are on backorder, not likely to arrive before Tsunami Tuesday.) I want each of you to join me at the caucus February 5th with at least one friend at least long enough to fill out the "presidential preference ballot." Help bring about the most dramatic change in the political landscape of this country in decades while showing our support for the vision, policies, and integrity of Barack Obama.
