Portland, Maine welcomed Obama's Campaign for Change wholeheartedly this morning at the Office's Grand Opening event.
A large crowd gathered to meet fellow supporters and listen to Governor Baldacci and Speaker of the House Glenn Cummings invite Mainers to be part of the campaign.

Cummings commented on the great turnout:
“It is fantastic to have this many people here today... it’s going to take a lot of volunteers, a lot of political work, a lot of chewed leather and a lot of phone calls to make this happen, so having this kind of turnout has been fantastic for us and it’s a symbol of I think the hope and potential for this campaign and for the country.”

Governor Baldacci spoke to importance of the field efforts and encouraged everyone to do their part:
“I think the most important thing is that in Maine things happen locally and at the grassroots. People in communities and streets and neighborhoods are going to make a difference. And that’s why Barack Obama inspires people; new people, young people, people that haven’t participated in the process because they really truly believe in him and the change that he’s going to bring about."
"It’s a great opportunity, to encourage many people, make the phone calls, write the letters, do the emails, do the text messages -- whatever it takes. Get them to vote, get them registered, and let’s change this country.”

Campaign for Change Staffer Meredith challenged the crowd to go out and register three new voters each -- a challenger supporters were happy to meet.
