Thank God Obama is supporting Fair Trade. It's about time someone in US in leadership position understands the false pretenses of Free Trade.
After living in a foreign country, talking to people around the world, and reading many articles about work conditions outside the US, I am a proponent of Fair Trade. Free trade is against the labor standards and laws we have established in the US. When we make agreements with countries to permit free trade we say it OK to violate human rights, fairness, ethics. I am talking about salary rates. I'm taking about no work day off; not paying earned wages for more than a month, sometimes as long as 3 months; of providing exceptionally poor living conditions; abusing authority; requiring employees to work in excess of 12 hours without extra compensation or on-going. I know there are more violations.
We have American companies who have companies around the globe. They do not instill our fair labor standards and laws in other parts of the world. I've heard that is the custom in that country. That does not make it right. And oftentimes, it is a practice but not the law,in fact, violates the law. Employees are so grateful to have a job, they do not report the employer. They do not complain, aloud. But, they have spoken to me.
I hope every American understands that Free Trade is inhumane. Free trade is outright wrong. Free trade needs to be abolished in our constitution, by the UN, and in our international policies, forever.
