President Barack Obama Awarded Nobel Peace Prize
As I reflect on the meaning of this event, I must ask:
'What other international award exists that has the
prestige of the Nobel Peace Prize?" I can not think of
one!
You may argue that this is just the opinion of a
committee of Europeans in Oslo, but I would bet
everything I own on the the premise that if everyone
in the world could vote at this time in our history, our
president, Barack Obama, would win in a landslide!
Who has done more to give hope that in a fractured,
wounded world peace is possible, that we can
begin to destroy nuclear weapons, that we can end
the construction of new ones, that both friends and
enemies need to make discourse a means to understanding,
that force to bring justice is always a last option, and that
there are means to end the environmental threat to
our planet.
President Obama's effect on these issues is worldwide.
His pledge to work ceaselessly on solving our domestic
and international problems brings hope to billions who
lost hope before he appeared on the horizon to inspire
us to a more optimistic future.
Those individuals and groups of Americans who say that
he is undeserving of this prize, must remember he is
our president. All Americans should be proud of the honor
to our country, regardless of personal politics.
They may say this award was given for Obama's
aspirations, rather than his achievements., They will be
forgetting his achievements at the United Nations in
bringing agreement among so many nations that nuclear
disarmament be begun for some and increased in pace
for others.
They will be forgetting his achievement in changing the
negative image of the United States as a war monger to a
positive image of the United States as a peacemaker. As
one of my grandson's said, "He created a global shift in
consciousness throughout the world."
We should all celebrate these achievements and commit ourselves
to helping him in anyway we can, now, and in the future.
Congratulations, Mr. President!
