The Senate passed a landmark health-care bill Thursday morning that would provide coverage to more 30 million people and begin a far-reaching overhaul of Medicare and the private insurance market. Vice President Biden presided over the 60-39, party line vote. Thursday's vote -- which came on the first Senate session on Dec. 24 in more than five decades -- brings Democrats closer than ever to realizing their 70-year-old goal of universal health coverage. For the first time, most Americans would be required to obtain health insurance, either through their employer or via new, government-regulated exchanges. Those who can't afford insurance plans would receive federal subsidies. And Medicaid would be vastly expanded to reach millions of low-income children and adults.

Senate Democrats passed a landmark health care bill in a climactic Christmas Eve vote that could define President Barack Obama's legacy and usher in near-universal medical coverage for the first time in the country's history. The 60-39 vote on a cold winter morning capped months of arduous negotiations and 24 days of floor debate. It also followed a succession of failures by past congresses to get to this point. Vice President Joe Biden presided as 58 Democrats and two independents voted "yes." Republicans unanimously voted "no." The tally far exceeded the simple majority required for passage.

Senate Democrats this morning passed a sweeping healthcare overhaul bill, setting the stage for reconciliation early next year with similarly historic legislation passed by the House last month… The bill, which is President Obama's top domestic priority, would extend insurance to about 30 million people who now lack it, expand the reach of Medicaid for the poor, and impose new rules on health insurance companies. It would cost about $871 billion over 10 years, but raise more than that in new taxes and fees and cuts in Medicare… The Senate bill would lead to the largest transformation of the country's healthcare system since the creation of Medicare in 1965. It would require all Americans to have health insurance, either through their jobs, through the government or through the private market, and it would penalize those who do not comply.

The Senate approved sweeping health-overhaul legislation on Thursday, a landmark moment for White House-led efforts to expand insurance coverage to more than 30 million Americans. The bill, approved by a 60-39 vote, would deliver on a long-promised Democratic goal of extending coverage to nearly every American, and would represent the biggest expansion of the federal safety net since the 1965 creation of Medicare, the health-insurance program for the elderly and disabled. Presiding over the Senate, in a rare appearance, was Vice President Joe Biden. As Senate chair, the Vice President can serve as the tie-breaking vote in the event of a 50-50 deadlock. But tonight's victory for Democrats was never in doubt. Over the course of this week, Democrats have passed several test votes--set at a 60-member, supermajority threshold. The only question this morning was, would they keep all of their members united for the final vote. In the end they did.

Ron Brownstein, Atlantic Media, “Historic achievement...Largest Democratic legislative achievement since Medicare”:

Well I think there are two big points about it. First, this is - whatever you think about the underlying bill - an historic achievement. Up until this year no universal coverage bill had ever even reached the floor of the House or the Senate, much less passed it. It has defeated every other President who has tried it. Truman, Nixon, Clinton, FDR. This will be, as it now seems inevitable to reach the President's desk, this will be the largest Democratic legislative achievement since Medicare in 1965 and it will be achieved in an atmosphere that is very difficult to operate in simply because you now need 60 votes to do almost everything. There have been more cloture votes in the Senate this year than there were in the entire decade of the 1960s.

On December 24th, in an early morning vote, the United States Senate voted to pass health-care reform. It was the first time the body had been in session on the 24th since 1963. That's fitting, as it's arguably the most important piece of legislation the body has passed since 1963. It's become difficult to write these milestone posts. Health-care reform, by this point, has had a lot of milestones. It has cleared five committees. It has come through the House of Representatives. It has been merged into a single bill in the Senate. It has passed through the Senate. No previous health-care reform bill has come anywhere near this far. But there are more milestones left to achieve: The House and Senate need to agree on a bill. That bill has to pass both chambers again. And then the president has to sign the legislation.

North Carolina is Jumping to Action!

In response to Organizing for America's 100,000 Call to Congress Challenge, North Carolina citizens jumped to the call for action! It's only 4PM here in North Carolina and citizens have already made over 1,024 phone calls across the state to their neighbors, family and friends to empower them to contact their Member of Congress to demand Health Insurance Reform! Thus far students and senior citizens have led the rally for Health Insurance Reform!!!
Senior Citizens all across the state are rallying to prove to their neighbors and fellow senior citizens that the President is committed to delivering Health Insurance Reform that positively affects them, as well as the generations to follow! In Asheville, NC a relentless group of callers started at 10AM this morning calling senior citizens to spread support for the PResident's plan. Equipped with wisdom, strong organizing and the hope for change, these callers took off and accomplished over 100 calls into the rural mountains of Western North Carolina. See below for a few pics of them hard at work for our President!!!

Students from UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University, Shaw University and North Carolina Central University started the charge for Health Insurance Reform here in NC at 10:40AM. With two large rallies and two tabling events, students pushed the need for Health Insurance Reform across their campus loudly and in some very creative ways! At UNC Chapel Hill, student organizers wore hospital masks and handed out the President's Plan to students during their lunch break. In addition, student organizers at UNC wore hospital gowns with OFA Health Care Reform signs on, pretending to be sick and literally BEGGED students to commit to calling their Member of Congress. This was very entertaining and very effective. At these campuses, students have already collected over 200 commitments from students and are still working hard to show that the youth support the President's Plan for Health Insurance Reform!!! Tonight, we have over 100 volunteers signed up to make calls tonight to their neighbors and fellow citizens to spread the need for Health Insurance Reform across the state of North Carolina...Will you join us?

Shortly after 7:00 AM this morning Barack and Michelle, accompanied by their daughters Sasha and Malia, arrived at their local polling place -- Shoesmith Elementary School. This was the same school gym where Barack cast his ballot in the Illinois primary on February 5th, nearly nine months ago.

When they finished, Michelle left to take the girls to school and Barack dashed off to Indiana to help get out the vote.

Backstage Pass Selection: Sara Reese

Cary resident Sara Reese is the first of ten donors to be selected to join Barack backstage tonight at the Election Night event in Chicago. Sara and her husband Kerry have been struggling to make ends meet with rising medical costs and gas prices-- it all began after September 11th when Kerry lost his job and was out of work for a year.

Sara made the first step when she stopped in to the Campaign for Change field office in Cary to register voters and make phone calls to supporters across the state. Here's what she told us about her volunteering experience:

It's a great feeling--you feel special and connected with people. Everyone has concerns and there is one common thread--and thats the economy--we are all wondering how we are going to get our bills paid.

It was then that she made a promise to herself to make a donation to the campaign every month and would allot space in her family budget for it.

I wanted to be a part of this campaign. We need change and I knew Barack Obama would be the one to bring it.

Sara woke up early this morning, anxious to head straight the the polls and cast her ballot for Barack before hopping on a plane to Chicago with her "I voted sticker" still in tact. She was "stunned" and began pacing from excitement when she received the call from the campaign that she was one of ten to be selected.

I'm so amazed. This a story I'll be able to tell my son and my grandchildren--it's absolutely priceless, a priceless gift. Barack's successes have motivated us to be better parents. We are turning off our t.v. and working to help our son achieve.

All North Carolinians who registered to vote before October 10th are eligible to vote.

Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. To 7:30 p.m. ALL voters in line at 7:30 p.m. have the right to vote as long as they remain in line.

To make sure your vote for Barack counts, you must vote for President separately. If you vote only a straight party ticket, you haven't voted for President.

You do NOT need to show ID to vote unless this is your first time voting in North Carolina. If you are a first time voter, find what you need to bring HERE

Today, John McCain's campaign said, “The fact that young people have not made up a larger share of early voters this year proves that Obama has failed in his mission to reshape the active voting population on a broad scale...The whole premise of Barack Obama's campaign was, 'We're going to restructure the political dynamic in America.' There has not been a restructuring...Where's the youth vote? They come to his events. They wear nice shirts."

Each one of you has helped make this campaign possible - and the McCain campaign has written you off. Let's prove them wrong. You have been working towards tomorrow, Election Day, for months now - if not longer. Now is not the time to drop the ball or live up to the low expectations set by the pundits and other campaigns.

At the Polls: Last day of Early Voting

Today, I stopped by the polls to chat with a few supporters who were excited to cast their ballots on the last day of One-Stop Early Voting. They shared their reasons for supporting Senator Obama, their volunteering efforts and early voting experiences.

Raleigh resident, Bob Gilbert brought his wife Marie to the polls to cast her ballot. Bob distributed "I voted early for Barack Obama" stickers and talked about his volunteer experiences. "I first volunteered at several events and then I really got involved during the Early Voting period--I started making phone calls from home but being in a campaign office and volunteering is something else, there's a certain energy and excitement that comes along with it."

Marie shared her reasons for supporting Barack and how the current economic conditions are affecting her directly:

I'm a social worker for a large non profit organization and most of my clients are folks that are struggling.
Our organization is struggling to fulfill our mission --our funds are being cut by the state and federal government and we are unable to distribute funds to those who need them. So when my clients come to me asking for assistance and see how strict we have to be with the food banks and how much we can give them, I say "get out and vote." I encourage them to be an agent of change thorough voting.

Michele came down to the polls with her daughter to volunteer and educate voters on the ballot. Here's what she had to say:

I support Obama because he is the solution to our economic problems. He knows what's going to work and is willing to listen to different points of view in order to make the right decision. For the first time in eight years, I will be proud to be an American--we'll get that respect back from all over the world. I'm going to continue to work at the polls and give rides to those who need them. I voted early in Wake Forest on the first day--I felt thrilled and refused to take the backing off my sticker because I want to frame it--I want to remember this emotional experience forever.

Our father was a republican and so was his father. We were raised in a republican household but I identified myself as a democrat. We always cancelled each others votes out--but now my entire family is involved in this election. I think his level of intelligence and his appeal to the masses has generated an enormous response--you can believe what he has to say and that's why we all need to exercise our right to vote.

It’s not a trick: your chance to vote early is almost gone. So this Halloween, treat yourself with a One-Stop Early Vote. It takes just minutes, even if you’re a first-time voter. Yesterday in Rocky Mount, Michelle Obama made a powerful case for why voting early is so important. Here’s an excerpt:

If you vote early … that means if you get sick, if the weather’s bad, if something comes up, you can’t say, ‘Well, I didn’t make it.' You can’t not make it this time...And after you’ve voted early, we need you to educate other people. You need to take it upon yourself to find five, ten other people in your own lives, particularly those who are not registered. Find them. Walk them through the process. Hold their hands. You remember what Barack says? We are one another’s brothers and sisters, keepers.

Barack Obama can win North Carolina if we can work together to make it happen, and voting early is a big part of that. When you vote early, you can talk to your friends and family about how it works and how easy it is.

The Elizabeth Pumpkin Wall returns to Charlotte at the original site, 537 Lamar Avenue. Each year people from the community get together, carve pumpkins, place them in the wall and add a phrase or word on the wall. This year the organizers decided to do an "Obama" pumpkin wall.

I voted early at the Triangle Town Mall in Raleigh. I have to say that it was pretty quick. I waited about 20 minutes in total. The people working the poll were very polite and helpful. Everything was organized. They had everything I needed to vote. The site used paper ballots and there were probably 20 kiosk to use for marking your ballot. A few days after I voted, I checked on the Board of Election website to make sure that may ballot was accepted. It was! Vote. Vote EARLY. It will make your life easier and you can make history and change our course!

Meet four super volunteers: Clay, Atreyu, Carolyn and Melissa. All four are students at NC State and they volunteer both on campus with NCSU Students for Barack Obama and at the Central Raleigh office.

Carolyn:

I have been involved on campaigns since high school; I have worked for Rep. Schuler and other local campaigns. I am busy in school, but did not want to pass up on this opportunity. I didn't want to take a chance on him not winning.

Clay:

This election is important to my generation because it is going to affect the rest of our lives.

Atreyu:

The first election I voted in was 2004. I did not volunteer and I felt partly responsible for the results. I am from North Carolina and I love that I can be a part of it here in my home state. It's actually a battleground state. In the primaries, I knew people who travelled to Iowa and South Carolina - and the NC primary was almost an afterthought. But it mattered - and was a part of Barack's nomination. And now North Carolina matters more than ever.

Clay, Atreyu, Carolyn and Melissa are doing what they can in between class, exams and studying to help Barack win. How much time can you give? There are only 6 days until the last day of one-stop early voting on November 1st. VOTE EARLY and then sign up to VOLUNTEER today.

Joe Biden's Raleigh Rally

Yesterday Senator Joe Biden traveled across North Carolina and held three Change We Need rallies in Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Raleigh. We had a chance to catch up with him in Raleigh and here is what he said to a packed audience of over 7,000 at Meredith College,

I know how patriotic the people of North Carolina are. This is a state of 790,000 veterans. It has more than 5,300 North Carolina sons and daughters deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

...There are heroes all over Amercia in every state and in every town. We all love this country.

...That is why we should be ending these scurrilous phone calls and e-mails that are going out. They lie about Barack Obama. These attacks don't hurt Barack. They are an attempt to divide the country and distract us from the things that really matter.

While scanning the crowd for people wearing "I Voted Early" stickers, I met Peggy and John. They not only voted early, but will be driving other voters to their One-Stop Early Voting locations.

Both have been supporters of Barack since the North Carolina primary. Here is what Peggy had to say about why she supports Barack:

We prefer Barack's health care plan. I am appalled at the current state of our health care system - tremendous reform is needed. We also support Barack for his judgement on the Iraq war. Finally, like every one else, we are negatively impacted by the economy. McCain played a role in the decisions and policies that brought the economy to where it is today.

Road Blog: Joe Biden Campaigns Through North Carolina

With 12 days left before the election, Joe Biden campaigned through North Carolina today encouraging people to vote early.

The first Change We Need Rally took place in Charlotte. According to Brian O'Keeffe, Associate Director for Events and Programming, 1,300 people arrived at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte Halton Arena to hear Joe speak. A large, painted “Hope” sign hung to the left of the stage. Joe told the assembled crowd that the Obama-Biden ticket was aiming to achieve the largest voter turnout in North Carolina’s history.

Next, the motorcade drove to Wake Forest University where Joe conducted the second Change We Need Rally of the day in Hearn Plaza, outside of the grand Reynolda Hall. Four thousand five hundred people attended the rally on this brisk, fall day. Joe spoke about the dire need for the country to unite together across political lines to solve the problems that we struggle with today.

Joe ended the day at Meredith College’s McCiver Amphitheater in Raleigh. Seven thousand people gathered in the grass below the stage and fanned out in the amphitheater seats. Joe talked about campaigning through the United States and how American heroes are found in every region of the country. It was a cold night, but as one student excitedly said as she was leaving the rally, “That was really worth it!”

General Wesley Clark on National Security

This morning, four-star general Wesley Clark, met with veterans and supporters of Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change for coffee at Java Express in Sanford. The former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO hosted a discussion on national security and why Obama’s plan to improve the quality of care for veterans who have returned from service overseas is helping to grow his support among men and women of the armed forces.

Gen. Wesley Clark raising the arm of Lee County Field Organizer, Henry Wellington, telling a crowded coffee shop to contact him "to knock on doors and make phone calls over the next 13 days to make Barack Obama the next President of the United States."

General Clark also visited the Braswell Memorial Library in Rocky Mount to address volunteers and veterans. He thanked tireless volunteers and encouraged new supporters to make regular visits to their local Campaign for Change headquarters.

General Clark joined Marine Corps Captain Jonathan Kuniholm of Chapel Hill in a discussion about the change that Barack Obama would bring to improve veteran care and support. Kuniholm is the Chapel Hill veteran who addressed thousands at Denver’s Invesco Field prior to Barack Obama’s address at the Democratic National Convention.

James Taylor Comes Home to North Carolina

James Taylor wrapped up his tour in support of Barack today. Over five concerts in three days, Mr. Taylor shared why he thinks Barack is right for North Carolina with supporters across the state - while also encouraging each audience member to vote early for Barack. This is what he had to say last night in his hometown of Chapel Hill:

I'm very pleased to be back here - back home in Chapel Hill. Above all I'm honored and thrilled and delighted to be able to be a part of this historic moment - this Obama campaign. I commend you all. Hats off to you for the work you've done and for the work that you will do. We're in the home stretch, this is the crucial point where it all comes right down to it. We've got to get those votes out. I feel a kinship - we have all been summoned to do service to the campaign and to stand up and make an effort for our country.

The audience was a mix of students and non-students and I had a chance to meet Erin, a volunteer with UNC Students for Change. She is a sophomore and has been active since...Iowa. That's right. Erin is from Cedar Rapids and began volunteering on the campaign before most people had even heard of Barack.

I have throughly enjoyed the excitement of volunteering and being a part of the grassroots campaign. When I was a volunteer in Iowa, the campaign was so new and local - now I am so excited that I can help out here in North Carolina, as well. The race in North Carolina started to get closer when we got back to school this fall - and it's great to be able to help out here.

I received this email from Moretta this morning and wanted to share it with everyone. It struck a chord in me as I feel, like Moretta, that this election will mark our lives and live within each of us. WE CAN MAKE HISTORY. It is in our hands and heard with our vote.

Hello all,

I went and made history on Saturday, October 18, 2008!

That is a day I won't soon forget. I went to my alma mater, NCCU to cast my vote for who I pray is the next PRESIDENT of the United States. It was gloomy, but as soon as I got out of the car I felt a sense of excitement and with my 4 year old daughter in tow I walked to the polling site. I was greeted outside by some very cold but enthusiastic volunteers that asked me "Are you ready to make history." My daughter held her head up high and said I'm voting for Barack Obama. (For those of you who know my daughter, I'm sure you can imagine how she said it.)

We walked inside, and although there weren't any lines there were several people casting their votes. As I stood at the booth with my ballot, my daughter told me that she wanted to see what I was doing. Those tables are high for me at 5'1 so I took my ballot down and pointed to Barack Obama's name and asked her what if she knew what it said. She recognized his name immediately and I showed her where I filled in the circle to indicate that he was my choice. I explained that I was voting for him because of her and her her brother, who was sick and didn't feel up to going.

As I completed the remainder of my ballot, I overheard a women telling someone that this was her first time voting. I didn't get a good look at her, but she sounded like an older woman. Then another woman chimed in and stated that she was a 43 year old republican and this was the first time she was voting for a democrat. I wanted to linger in the booth because the sense of excitement was so overwhelming, but my daughter was getting anxious because she knew that there was a sticker waiting for her. We got our stickers and placed them on our jackets and headed out. When I got in the car, I immediately began to call all of my friends and family in NY and to tell them about my experience. I know you shouldn't talk on the cell phone when your driving, but I was so moved.

Thus far, the question of my lifetime has been "Where were you on 9/11?" I am now looking to answer a question of hope and not one of fear and despair; I want to answer "Where were you when Obama won the White House?" I will gladly recall that, and tell them the story above about the day I made history. The story of how I was #2,326 to cast a vote at NCCU and that vote was for Barack Obama.

Sorry for the long email, I am INSPIRED and I hope it's contagious!

This morning on his way to a rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina Barack received the news that Colin Powell had endorsed his candidacy for president. General Powell is an extraordinary American, having served in our armed forces and in two presidential administrations with distinction.

Barack called the General to thank him and said that he looked forward to taking advantage of his advice in the next two weeks and hopefully over the next four years.

In his endorsement, Powell called for a politics of unity and spoke out against the politics of division. Barack expanded on these themes in front of the 10,000 folks who crowded into Fayetteville Coliseum (per Captain R.A. Sullivan of the Fayetteville Fire Department) and acknowledged what an honor it was to have the confidence of a man like Colin Powell.

On Nov. 4, North Carolina voters will head to the polls for the general election. The Daily Reflector will recommend candidates in races prior to that vote, and today focuses on the presidency.
For U.S. Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain, the campaign for the White House required an exhausting, grueling process spanning nearly two years. It necessitated an overwhelming investment of resources reflecting the high stakes and tremendous opportunity this election represents.
As Americans choose their next president, they should take careful measure of the candidates and determine which can chart the best course over the next four years. In doing so, American voters should conclude that Obama, the Democratic senator from Illinois, will be the leader of vision, intellect and temperament the nation needs.
Though style and flash always weigh heavily on presidential campaigns in the modern era, Americans look to the issues as they thoughtfully weigh the decision before them. And this year, Obama bests McCain on the most daunting challenges now facing the country.
Economic turbulence can be calmed through the sound fiscal policy Obama promotes. His tax plan moves the country away from the reckless budgets of the Bush administration and divides financial burden in a more equitable manner. McCain, conversely, would extend excessively large tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans passed at Bush's insistence in 2001, driving the nation further into debt.
On health care, Obama's plan would go further than McCain's proposal to provide coverage for the 47 million uninsured Americans by allowing them access to a federal system used by members of Congress. Independent reviews call it a more thorough and affordable plan.
On foreign policy, Obama wants to shift the military focus from Iraq to Afghanistan, a move that would ratchet up pressure on the al-Qaida leadership responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the Taliban forces that protect them. He argues that diplomatic negotiations with all nations foster a safer world, and that the country's strength lies not only in its military might but in its compassion toward those oppressed by tyrants.
Obama argues a more thoughtful approach to energy independence, one that invests in renewable energy sources and limits a reliance on fossil fuels in general and foreign oil in particular. And on a host of other issues — from ensuring the solvency of Social Security to the need for comprehensive, rational immigration reform — his positions represent the type of progressive leadership that can restore confidence in the leadership of the White House.
Obama has been dismissed by opponents as little more than an exemplary orator, a man with limited political experience who is unprepared for the challenges ahead. He has been the subject of blatant falsehoods about his religious background and attacked as a radical leftist with dangerous associates.
But Obama has responded by relentlessly seeking to raise the level of public discourse and by focusing on the path toward an America that lives up to its promise as the greatest, most prosperous nation in history. His potential for achieving that outweighs McCain's.
The United States needs a new start with leaders capable of bringing innovative solutions to the troubling challenges that face this nation. For those reasons, the country needs Barack Obama as its president.

Raven Symoné spoke at One Stop Early Vote Rallies at UNC, NCCU, Shaw University and Fayetteville State where she encouraged students and citizens alike to vote early.Thursday kicked off the first day of One Stop Early Vote and Raven Symoné as well as supporters hit the ground running.

This is our time we must take advantage of the right that has been afforded to us, explained Raven. Now lets everybody get out there and do your stuff!

Barack Obama returns to North Carolina this weekend to hold a Change We Need Rally in the Fayetteville area on Sunday afternoon. Obama was last in North Carolina immediately before the last debate. He spent several days in Asheville preparing for the debate and held a rally that drew 28,000 people. Both Senator and Michelle Obama visited Fayetteville during the Primary. This is the Senator’s sixth trip to North Carolina since the Primary.

My mother and I voted this morning. I wanted to get there early before going in to work, and, to be honest, I wanted to be the first to vote for Barack Obama in my area.
We got to the early vote location north of Durham at 8:30 AM and there was already a line – apparently there are a lot of Obama fans in my neighborhood. Mom had been giving me a hard time earlier about showing up so early to vote, but as the line formed behind us she thanked me for dragging her to vote. By the time the polls opened at 9:00 AM, the line was out the door and around the corner.
I proudly voted for Barack Obama at 9:13 AM. Mine was the 6th ballot of the day.

I have been following all the debates and was impressed by Obama in the debates from the beginning. I also favored Biden and would have been happy with either candidate. I was delighted to get them both.
From the very start , I trusted Obama; admired his intelligence, his demeanor and his political ideas. I voted early today, because there would be nothing that could change my mind. This was the first time in a long time that I was excited and hopeful as I walked in to cast my ballot.
Obama's level head, graciousness and detemination are what America needs to lead us in this time. With an ally like Biden, a genuine good person who is well qualified, we can begin to hope again.
I am grateful to both of them to be willing to take these responsibilities on. Obama is thinking about all Americans; not himself.

Winston-Salem is Fired Up to Vote Early

Today, Winston-Salem had one of the biggest turnouts of Early Voters across the state. The people of Winston-Salem came together to get out the vote on the first day of One-Stop Early Voting--students from surrounding schools united in a march to the polls, people assisted voters with rides but overall we saw many people join their friends and family members to share this experience together.

While waiting in line, voters expressed their thoughts on Early Voting and and the importance of getting involved in this election:

I think Early Voting is really important because it provides an opportunity for people to get out and show their excitement for the campaign and for the democratic process. It is also important for folks like me who intend to work for Barack Obama on Election Day--we'll be out early that moring and throughtout the night.

Students Campout to be First to Vote

Last night, over 100 NCCU students camped out on campus to march to the polls the following morning and be one of the first to cast their ballot for Barack Obama. The room was filled with young, fired up individuals, united and eager to bring about change in the country--and most importantly, change the education system.

Bundled up in sleeping bags--these students focused intently on the last Presidential debate of the election and followed the debate with board games, movies and unfinished homework. Students expressed their excitement to be a part of history and to be able to tell their children, "I was one of the first to vote for Barack Obama for President."

Here's what a couple of them had to say:

I'm here to raise awareness and let people know that North Carolina Central University is going to show up and vote at the polls and that we're ready to make a change. Voting is the only voice we have as citizens and I'm definitely excited about his $4000 tax credit for students. Being the first member in my family to go to college creates a lot of pressure but I think Barack Obama will help ease that and will be a great role model to young men like me.

Tonight, me and a couple of my fellow college students are camping out to vote and be a part of Decision '08. Most of us are voting for the first time so we just wanted to get to the polls in a pivotal way--I think in order to bring about change, we may need to do some extreme things to get it--sleep outside, be the first to the polls--I don't think we are gonna get anywhere without sacrifice so I'm willing to sacrifice a few hours of sleep to get it.

KiDs FoR oBaMa

Yesterday, nearly 100 kids gathered in Pullen Park in Raleigh with their family and friends to show their support for Barack Obama. Children painted t-shirts, colored portraits of Barack, shot hoops for prizes and made American flags that they paraded around the park holding while cheering “Obama.”

But this event was more than just puff paint and glitter. Kids of all ages learned about the voting process--the electoral map, the candidates and past presidents. They were all able to register and vote by writing in their candidate of choice and dropping their ballot into a "confidential" ballot box.

They even wrote personal letters to Senator Obama, expressing their support and sending their wishes:

I am having an Obama Rally on Oct.12, 2008 in Raleigh N.C. Pullen Park I want to know if you want to come. It is 1-3PM.

Because I can’t stand the thought of four more years like the last eight.

I can’t stand the thought of four more years like the last eight because I have a sick very sick child. We went to the Doctor on Friday and she gave me two prescriptions, one of which cost me $70 and guess what? He’s not getting any better. So now I am looking at another doctor’s visit, which I can’t afford but can’t afford not to. Not mention more prescriptions. Sen. Obama has the better health care plan and looking at the state of our economy we can’t afford to have 4 more years of the last eight.

They can't afford to buy their own home, even though they both work full time. My daughter graduated from technical school but can't find a job in her field. My son is in the military and I constantly dread the day he will be sent to Iraq. His wife left him - along with their daughter - while he was deployed on a ship. She couldn't handle the stress. We need change NOW!

I can’t stand the thought of four more years like the last eight because time is running out. Things are happening for the people with Barack Obama. New direction, giving people a fair chance -- it just makes sense. People really believe that when he’s talking he’s not just a politician, we believe him, it’s who he is —we don’t need another politician to lie to us—Barack tells the truth and he is going to get rid of the corruption. I’m disabled and know he will have a great program for disabled people make things fair.

I can't stand the thought of 4 more years like the last eight because of the current US Heath policies. My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer last year, due to the illness, she had to resign her job which meant her benefits ran out as well. She applied for Medicaid but was denied because she had a 401K which carried the balance of 12K. According to the government rules you cannot have assets in excess of 2K in order to be eligible for Medicaid. Fortunately, Cobra kicked in but this too came with a premium of 400 per month, which is unaffordable for her. Her disability is roughly 1200 per month, she has a mortgage of 700 per month. You do the math. We need change today and these issues are real! I believe in Senator Obama's plan for change.

I can’t stand the thought of four more years like the last eight because I care so much about my community. I talk to the elderly and hear about their gas bills-- they don’t have a fixed income and they can’t afford it. I help people here with transportation. In this rural town some people don’t have cars and they need to get around--in exchange they give me something from their garden. I work as a substitute teacher at schools and these kids are apathetic because they know they won’t get the education that they deserve and I worry about that. When I see how humbly people have to live I think “we can do better than that as a nation”—and we will. I see trailer parks in my neighborhood and know that these people want jobs— we can’t have anymore of this.

Harper and Washington Encourage Students to Get Involved

Yesterday, actors Hill Harper and Kerry Washington came to Greensboro to show their support for Barack Obama. Hill and Kerry participated in various events surrounding North Carolina A&T State University's Homecoming--marching in the homecoming parade, tailgating and enjoying the game, they took every opportunity to speak to enthusiastic supporters, encourage them to volunteer and participate in One-Stop Early Voting.

At the tailgate location Hill and Kerry addressed a crowd of hundreds about the important role that North Carolina will play in this election. Onlookers listened intently under the bright North Carolina sun to the message they delivered while volunteers moved through the crowd to sign up and show their support in the remaining critical weeks.

During a radio interview, Hill Harper shared a very personal story about how he met Senator Obama while attending Harvard Law School and how their friendship has grown over the last 20 years. Harper said that in the middle of the intense primary season Sen. Obama took the time to call him and wish him a happy birthday, demonstrating the type of person he is--Harper went on to say he will be "good for our country."

Supporter Profile: Gray McKay

Last weekend, Gray McKay, set up a Voter Registration Drive at Pullen Park in Raleigh. As a First and Second grade Teachers Assistant, Gray spends her time away from the classroom canvassing, making phone calls and registering new voters.

With what happened in 2004, I was kicking myself to stop it but I was wasn’t doing anything to do so other than voting. So this election, I’m doing something and I’m enthusiastic about it.

Gray talks about the middle class having “a chance,” the need to get out of Iraq and to have healthcare for all. With yesterdays deadline of voter registration for voting on November 4th, Gray discusses the importance of voting early.

I think One-Stop Early Voting is great. I was always afraid that voting this way wouldn’t count but now I’m certain it will. I understand that they will be counted first. Something may come up on the 4th—people may get a flat tire, the line may be very long and then they may just not vote. But through Early Voting they definitely will.

John McCain said, “I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I've been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.” And just a few months ago, McCain bragged that he’d voted with President Bush 90% of the time.

The failed Bush-McCain economic policies have been disastrous here in North Carolina. Since 2001, North Carolina has lost 30% of its manufacturing jobs and the overall unemployment rate has jumped to 6.6%. At the same time, the cost of health care has doubled and the number of uninsured has increased 50% to 1.5 million North Carolinians.

North Carolina - we simply cannot afford four more years like the last eight. Vote early and then volunteer to help bring about the change we need.

Actors Hill Harper and Kerry Washington will attend several homecoming activities across the state tommorrow to encourage students to register to vote and vote early in this year’s presidential election.

Harper and Kerry will discuss how as president, Barack Obama would offer a $4,000 tax credit to help students pay for college as well as increase Pell Grant awards that make college more affordable. Senator Obama would also change our economic policies in order to create jobs and support working families.

Hill Harper has appeared in the television show CSI and the movie Soul Food. Kerry Washington was recently in the movie I Think I Love My Wife.

Over the weekend nearly 30,000 people in Western North Carolina attended the political rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, filling Asheville High’s Memorial Stadium to capacity and then spilling over. And as we enter into the final month of the presidential campaign, Senator Obama did not fail to inspire the crowd with his graceful tongue, unique ideals (for a politician) and quick wit. Selma Sparks, an older woman from Franklin, was so inspired she wrote a story about the youth at the rally.
Obama’s dignified bearing and easy grace transcend any mere political campaign. He invites his supporters and skeptics alike to understand that this campaign is not about him, but actually a movement for change (for the better). The election is only the first step of many in the effort to improve America and to once again make it, as Abraham Lincoln said, a “government of the people, by the people, for the people, [that] shall not perish from the earth.”
On Saturday afternoon, as I was preparing to go to the Vance- Aycock fundraiser — I had heard that Obama was staying at the Grove Park Inn and he may be appearing there — a stranger asked me if I believed him. I quickly replied that I did, that I had been watching him closely for over a year, that no politician could be that consistent in his dignified behavior unless he was “the real deal.”
But being the introspective type, the question nagged at me all evening. I wanted to know for sure. First, I figured, if Obama was going to be at the Grove Park Inn at the same time as the state’s Democratic leadership was holding their annual banquet, a true gentleman would make an appearance for his supporters. Of course he did show, rallied the troops and then went back to work in the next room practicing for Tuesday night’s debate.
The workers at the Grove Park liked Obama as well. Several of them said he would stop and “talk to them like an ordinary guy.” The bathroom attendant said Obama seemed like he actually cared, that he even stopped in to congratulate two newlyweds during their reception.
When I strolled into the hallway later, I saw a Secret Service agent examining me because of the camera bag. I seized the opportunity to pick his brain. Now, Secret Service agents are trained to be silent sentinels of their mission, so it’s not easy getting one of them to talk at all. But I’ve found that if you can look past the four or five guns they each carry, they are all-American, clean-cut, nice guys (that can kill you in a myriad of ways). After some smalltalk, I asked the agent if he liked working for Obama. He said the campaign had a “one-voice policy” and he couldn’t comment. I explained that it wasn’t for a story (only a commentary), and I just wanted to know for myself. Finally he said, “Alright, I can tell you this: It’s been a good experience for me.”
That said it all. Of course Obama is a shrewd politician, but he is foremost a gentleman. When he saw Franklin’s own Chris Cappocia, age 10, wearing a big red cast on his arm at the rally, Obama asked the boy if he could sign his cast for him, rather than the other way around, and even provided the marker. That’s my kind of President.

Mrs. Obama will address the unique challenges these families face while having a loved one deployed overseas and juggling everyday work and family responsibilities amidst an economic crisis. She will also share the Obama-Biden plan to support our troops and veterans, and provide economic security for North Carolina families.

Mrs. Obama began her series of conversations with military families in North Carolina in May, when she hosted her first roundtable discussion with military wives from Fort Bragg. Since then, Mrs. Obama has met with military families in Kentucky, Virginia, New Mexico and Pennsylvania. Last month, Mrs. Obama hosted an economic roundtable with working women in Charlotte, and a Women for Obama rally in Greensboro.

Change Crew Leader: Linda Puertolas

Cary resident, Linda Puertolas, moved to North Carolina 12 years "for a better quality of life," for herself and her family. Making the move from the very liberal state of New Jersey, Linda described her move to the South as "shocking."

She says:

In every election, I saw this state go red and this year I decided I would be actively involved to make sure that we could turn this state blue and make Barack Obama president. There is just something about him that is so fresh and inspiring. He strikes me as real.

Linda got involved with the campaign this past July by heading out and doing voter registration with her 10 year-old son and canvassing with her 13 year-old daughter. As a mother, wife and business owner, Linda finds time to volunteer and supports the campaign as a Change Crew Chief.

Change crews are the most important part of our field plan here in North Carolina and as a Change Crew Captain, Linda leads a crew of volunteers in canvassing, phonebanking and voter registration drives in their neighborhoods.

Talking to your own neighbors provides more accountability--our kids go to the same schools, we shop at the same grocery stores--it just makes more sense rather than them getting a call from someone in another state. Every single vote and every single volunteer is going to make the difference here in North Carolina.

Road Blog: Barack Obama in Asheville, North Carolina

Liz Allen is a registered nurse in the Cardiovascular Unit at Mission Hospital, here in Asheville. What Liz hates most is the waste. So many people who end up in the intensive care unit she works in are there because they don't have insurance. When people don't have health insurance they usually develop conditions that are far more dangerous -- and far more expensive to treat. It just doesn't make sense, especially at a time when Americans are suffering under the rising cost of everything in their lives, not just health care, but food and gas as well.

In her introduction at Asheville High School, home of the fighting Cougars, Liz made clear why she supports Barack. He is the only candidate looking out for needs the middle class.

She declared her support in from of about 28,000 folks (according to Captain Sarah Benson of the Asheville Fire Deptartment) and could not have been a better prelude to Barack himself.

So many people, like Liz Allen, are working hard to help others, even as they themselves are just scraping by. It's the only way this country can regain it's strength. More than that, as Barack says, it's who we are. Find out how you can help this movement for change across America.

Eastern NC Leaders for Change--Tomorrow

Several key leaders in eastern North Carolina will meet tomorrow in Raleigh, in an unprecedented show of support for Senator Barack Obama and for his agenda for economic prosperity. Eight of North Carolina’s current and former elected officials will be on hand, including former Governor Hunt, Secretary of State Marshall, Representatives Price, Etheridge, Miller, Butterfield and Senator Rand.

The event will focus on how an Obama Administration will address the challenges facing North Carolina families. Senators Obama and Biden have a plan to put the middle class first with tax cuts for 95% of working families, trade policies that don’t put American workers at an unfair disadvantage, and a plan to provide access to healthcare for all Americans.

Jarrett has no formal title inside the campaign, other than senior adviser. Her place at the table comes from her long personal relationship with both Barack and Michelle Obama. She is the insider-outsider, a trusted friend who can give them a view from beyond the confines of the campaign bubble. Jarrett was Michelle Obama's mentor. An aide to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley in the 1990s, she hired Michelle away from her law firm to work for the city. A veteran of Chicago politics, Jarrett got her start working for Harold Washington, the city's first black mayor. Obama has long turned to her for advice. When he wanted to run for the U.S. Senate, he first had to convince Michelle and Jarrett that it was a good idea. He's been seeking her counsel ever since.

Campaign for Change Office Openings--This Weekend

Three office openings this weekend bring us to a total of 44 offices statewide! Join us this weekend in Clayton and Selma to eat good food and meet fellow supporters in your community.

"Last weekend volunteers knocked on over 107,000 doors in North Carolina" said Marc Farinella, State Director for the Obama campaign here in North Carolina." The groundswell of support for Senator Obama in North Carolina has enabled us to open campaign offices in every corner of the state. These offices will serve as a resource to our 9,000 statewide volunteers who are working to bring about the change that North Carolinians deserve."

How Barack will Steer Us Out of the Current Financial Crisis

Today, the Obama-Biden campaign released a new two minute TV ad, Same Path, which includes Senator Obama telling America he knows we can steer ourselves out of this crisis, but not by driving down the very same path and how that's what this election's all about.

In the ad, Obama details how his plan to jump-start our economy, create millions of jobs, and bring back our Main Streets all across America differs with John McCain's plan to continue the same failed policies. Obama specifically lays out how his tax plan which offers three times as much tax relief to the middle class and cuts taxes for small and startup businesses differs from McCain's which will continue giving hundreds of billions in new tax breaks to big corporations and oil companies and extends the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest.

Obama in Reno: "We cannot have another day like yesterday"

Senator Obama just finished holding a Change We Need rally in Reno, Nevada. In his opening remarks, he discussed the current financial situation and the Economic Rescue Plan. He stated his plan to call for expanding the federal deposit insurance for families and small businesses across America...

This morning – like so many others over the last few months – we woke up to some very sobering news about our economy. Over the course of a few hours, the failure to pass the economic rescue plan in Washington led to the single largest decline of the stock market in two decades.

Over one trillion dollars of wealth was lost by the time the markets closed on Monday. And it wasn’t just the wealth of a few CEOs or Wall Street executives. The 401Ks and retirement accounts that millions count on for their family’s future are now smaller. The state pension funds of teachers and government employees lost billions upon billions of dollars. Hardworking Americans who invested their nest egg to watch it grow are now watching it disappear.

But while the decline of the stock market is devastating, the consequences of the credit crisis that caused it will be even worse if we do not act and act immediately.

Because of the housing crisis, we are now in a very dangerous situation where financial institutions across this country are afraid to lend money. If all that meant was the failure of a few big banks on Wall Street, it would be one thing.

But that’s not what it means. What it means is that if we do not act, it will be harder for you to get a mortgage for your home or the loans you need to buy a car or send your children to college. What it means is that businesses won’t be able to get the loans they need to open new factories, or hire more workers, or make payroll for the workers they have. What it means is that thousands of businesses could close. Millions of jobs could be lost. A long and painful recession could follow.
...This morning, I proposed one such idea that might increase bipartisan support for this plan and shore up our economy at the same time: expanding federal deposit insurance for families and small businesses across America who have invested their money in our banks.

The majority of American families should rest assured that the deposits they have in our banks of up to $100,000 are still guaranteed by the federal government. That guarantee is more than adequate for most families, but it is insufficient for many small businesses to meet their payroll, buy their supplies, and create new jobs. The current insurance limit of $100,000 was set 28 years ago and has not been adjusted for inflation. I’ve proposed raising the FDIC limit to $250,000 – a step that would boost small businesses, make our banking system more secure, and help restore confidence by reassuring families that their money is safe. That’s one idea. If there are others that can help shore up support for this plan and shore up our economy, I encourage Democrats and Republicans to offer them. But we must act and we must act now. We cannot have another day like yesterday. We cannot risk another week or another month where American businesses are afraid to extend credit and lend money. That is not an option for this country.

For the rest of today and as long as it takes, I will continue to reach out to leaders in both parties and do whatever I can to help pass a rescue plan. To the Democrats and Republicans who opposed this plan yesterday, I say – step up to the plate and do what’s right for this country. And to all Americans, I say this – if I am President of the United States, this rescue plan will not be the end of what we do to strengthen this economy – it will only be the beginning.

You Did It -- 107,703 Doors Knocked for Barack!

This past weekend, history was made in North Carolina. Despite bad weather on Saturday, over three thousand volunteers -- thoroughly fed up with the status quo -- signed up to go door-to-door and talk about their reasons for supporting the Obama-Biden ticket.

These volunteers set out to answer the call to knock 100,000 doors in one weekend. When the walk papers were all sorted and the numbers tallied up, our amazing supporters had not only gone where no presidential campaign had gone before, they had gone further and knocked on precisely 107,703 doors all across NC.

That means 107,703 families in NC this weekend had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with a supporter about the issues that matter to them -- the wars, the economy, healthcare, deregulation. That means 107,703 chances to register voters, talk with undecided voters, and let North Carolina know that Barack and Joe are serious about the Tar Heel State.

One of the most exciting aspects of this campaign is that many of our active volunteers are Independents and Republicans who believe that now is the time to unite -- and that Barack and Joe have the policies, the judgement, and -- rather importantly -- the power of the people behind them to affect real change.

These volunteers went to their local Campaign for Change offices, where they were armed with packs of literature, voter lists, and guidance. (And granola bars, bottled water, and bumper stickers, too.) For many volunteers, this was their first time canvassing. For others, who are Change Crew members, and other powerhouse volunteers, they just kept on walking and knocking.

North Carolina, you did what many thought was impossible. Thank you for your work -- Barack is going to need your continued efforts as we turn North Carolina blue!

POSTPONED: Tomorrow’s N.C. Leaders for Change Events

According to today’s news reports, Congress will likely be in session Monday morning, preventing our Members of Congress from attending the N.C. Leaders for Change events scheduled for tomorrow, September 29th, at 9:00 a.m. in Raleigh and 12:15 p.m. in Greenville. Because of this development, the N.C. Leaders for Change event will be postponed.

We apologize for this change. We will let you know as soon as possible when this event will be rescheduled, and we hope you will be able to join us then.

I attended my second Obama rally on Sept. 27, 2008 in Greensboro, NC! It was a fantastic experience and my first time hearing Joe Biden speak. The rally was the morning after the first Presidential Debate and the crowd was fired up and ready to go! I met both of the gentlemen and enjoyed every moment of it. OBAMA BIDEN '08!

I waited in line with my friends for over 4 hours to see and hear history being made. I cannot even express how thankful I am to have experienced such a special day in my lifetime, a day that I will never forget. Barack and Joe are both dynamic speakers but at the same time I appreciated their candidness concerning the issues affecting North Carolinians. I also could not believe how "real" they were. The day came to a perfect ending when I was able to shake the hand of the next President of the United States of America...BARACK OBAMA!!!
