My Experience at a Town Hall Meeting on Health Care Reform

At the Lexington Town Hall meeting instead of showing the President's plan they showed the GOP plan (chart included).
At the Lexington Hall Meeting there was majority Republicans of course, and a few Democrats. There was a share of outbursts here and there.
I sat up front and got to ask the people around me their opinion on Health Care. Some were unsure about it. Dr. John Black, the President, SC Medical Assoc. Said the? Doctor association (don't remember the name) was supporting the President's Plan, because of duress. Rep. Joe Wilson also echoed that other groups were under duress, to support the plan. What I find so interesting about Dr. Black everything he would support in a Bill in Health Care Reform is already in the President's plan. The folks love it, but they didn't understand that this is part of the President's Plan not the GOP.

Rep. Joe Wilson continuously spread some of the same falsehoods Republicans have been spreading in emails. He said that Abortion is mention through out this bill, which is False. He talked about the so called death panel and how the illegal aliens would take advantage of the Presidents plans. Some Democrats were fed up of the falsehoods and would shout out liar. Any information in reference to the President’s Health Care Reform Joe Wilson talked about has been proven false by the Media and the White House. Questions were put on post cards and drawn from a box. All the questions we heard were from Republicans. (Not to add there were several duplicate questions on the Post cards which was a waste of time.) I guess they were afraid of the questions if people got up to use a microphone.

There was one short elder lady that kept interrupting and calling Joe Wilson a liar with some shouts about Iraq. She kept getting reprimanded by the man reading the Questions on stage. At one point Joe Wilson directly reprimanded her for her out bursts (something about comparing to a chair and table). People were yelling at her to leave. After it was almost over she got up to leave and Republicans were roaring and clapping. As she was leaving and Joe Wilson was speaking she yelled something and another elder man went over and looked like touch her arm (? I guess to take her out). The elder gentlemen she was with stood in front of her and stared the other elderly man down.

After the meeting I went over to Speak to Rep. Wilson to ask a question. There were several people trying to ask questions and I was directly standing beside Rep. Wilson and every time I tried to get in to ask a question he seem to keep to turning around in the circle to answer someone else's question. Not to say this figured into the picture, but I was probably suspected as a supporter for the President since I am African American, and I was the only African I noticed in the crowd trying to ask Rep. Joe Wilson a question after the meeting. There were some people who kept mentioning after the last person had finish with their question, I was trying to ask a question. (He seem to keep turning in a circle in the other direction to answers someone else's question, mind you again I was directly next to him). The agent? I assume who was with Rep. Wilson said he would make sure I would get to speak to Rep. Wilson.

I ask Rep. Wilson How can he explain for Canada, who he said has everyone on a 6 months waiting list, can some how be able to provide health care since 2007 for any American unemployed or simply cannot afford insurance in the United States to come there to gain health care for a small fee? How can he justify the United States can't take care of his own? He gave be a blip answer, we can't afford it, and tried to turn away.
I then said the President's Public option was not free and that people would have to pay for it. The plan also help covers the gap for those that can’t pay for private insurance.
He also later said each country should take care of its own. Mind you Joe Wilson is not interested in providing insurance option such as a public plan so how could he say the United States will take care of its own? The folks chimed in...

He tried to mention the Trillion dollars the President’s health care program would cost and I said I understood it to be in the billions.

He tried to mention all the illegal aliens that have been driving up the cost, (when he mentions illegal aliens everyone began yelling about the illegal aliens. I had one woman pointing at me and screaming. I looked at her and looked away. I told him of all the millions Americans who drive up cost by using the emergency rooms to get medical attention.

He then mention all the small businessmen that would go out of business and all the people with private insurance would be removed from their personal insurance plan and I explained a public plan would be good for the small businessmen that could not afford providing insurance to their employees. Employees would be able to buy affordable insurance on their own, and people with private insurance would still be able to keep their insurance.

He kept trying to make people fear government involved in health care throughout the town hall meeting and when I was talking to him, I also ask him if he is going to ask all these folks around him to get off Medicare since Medicare is ran by the government. I then ask him does he support Medicare and he did say yes.
There was another woman next to me who kept yelling I was wrong about the small businessmen not going out of business. She said she would explain it to me, and I looked at her and told her I didn't want to hear from her because anything she had to say would be biased. Rep. Joe Wilson looked over his shoulder and smiled at her. (I had overheard earlier this same woman talking to one of Joe's Wilson's people. Apparently she and Rep. Wilson have talked before and also I overheard her tell she works for the Insurance Industry).
We had some other comments back and forth but that’s about the gist of it.
I had all the questions I could think of and so I left. On my way out small businessmen shook my hand and told me he actually understood the questions I asked Rep. Joe Wilson. He thought the President plans was a good plan, but was concerned about some of the penalties (some more of the Falsehoods Joe Wilson put out there at this Town Hall meeting).
Actually I believe majority of those people in that room would support a Public choice, but the Republicans are making it sound bad. One lady told Joe she was mad and she was afraid that the government was going to take her Medicare. Do you think Joe Wilson told her she shouldn’t worry about that in the President’s plan? NO, he didn’t tell her she was wrong, he overlooked this and referenced what he would not support this bill. One gentleman told Joe Wilson that he hopes he can put out more information about the Health Care Reform bill, because he just didn’t have enough information about it. C'mon he isn't going to get the correct information from Representative Republican Joe Wilson.

Well that's my long story, and my last Town Hall meeting on Health Care, so my mom can stop worrying.

Updates and a bit of a rant

There are a couple of new items on MyBo that I wanted to bring to your attention. The first is the new feature on Neighbor to Neightbor, which is called Vets to Vets. Right now, it targets phone calls to vets in New Hampshire, but I'm sure that will expand to other swing states quickly. Here is the link: http://my.barackobama.com/page/votercontact/landing.

Second, Im pleased to announce that there is a Womens Veterans for Obama group @: http://my.barackobama.com/page/group/FemaleVetsforObama (it says Female Vets for Obama, but they are working on changing that). For those of you who are women veterans, you are well aware of our unique needs, and how imperative it is to bring those needs to the forefront. Please spread the word and let's get the group numbers up!

I have been asked by Stephen Fox, Contributing Editor for the New Mexico Sun News to share his blog posts: http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/stephenfox/gG5Q5n.

There is one thing he said that I want to echo: WE MUST WIN THIS ELECTION!

We risk losing everything that we have fought for for the past232 years, namely, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, for us, our children and our childrens children. This is a class war. They are using their bastardized version of "family values" against us, and believe me, there are a lot of folk out there buying every ignorant word they are putting out.

WE MUST WIN THIS ELECTION!!

Veterans medical benefits will be privatized. Personnel returning from OIF/OEF will continue to be short-changed in receiving the care they need for the physical and psychological damage they have suffered for serving their country. Much needed services to assist them in transitioning from military to civilian life will be non-existent.

WE MUST WIN THIS ELECTION!!!

We need to show them that Community Organizers trump their Hockey Mom, on ice, grass, on the water, in the air, and in the desert.

Have a great weekend, get lots of calls made, doors knocked on and literature distributed. And as always, stay "Fired Up"!

If "Education is the civil rights issue of the 21st century" then why didn't McCain vote to pass the Webb GI Bill?

"Education is the civil rights issue of the 21st century". John McCain, Republican Nomination Speech, September 4th, 2008.

If so, why did John McCain oppose the new GI Bill? This legislation provides access to higher education for our veterans and their families. Barack Obama understands this and supported this landmark legislation and is dedicated to ensuring its full implementation. Unfortunately even now the Bush-McCain team is working to undermine this law by poor management and leaving it to contractors instead of VA education specialists to administer

Even Politico questions McCain's VP pick

Please read and circulate widely. This is information that we need to be using as we go about canvassing and tabling. If Politico is questioning McCain's pick, we know something's up.

http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Scholars_question_Palin_credentials

He's busy pandering to Hillary supporters, as if they are too ignorant to see what he is trying to pull.
The Real McCain

Ok, things are going to heat up really quickly. The convention is next week, and Barack gives his acceptance speech on 8/28. From there on, we have 68 days to winning the election. We are all going to have to push really hard to help him gain the double-digit lead he needs in the polls and assure that McCain doesn't have a chance. To that end, I'm posting some material here that can be used for talking points. It is imperative that we demonstrate to veterans how much effort the senator has put forth on their behalf, and what his intentions are for the future - and what John McCain's voting record on veterans and military issues has really been.

Thanks for Curtis Walker and Barb Miller for much of this information:

McCain Lies About His Voting Record on Veterans Issues:

http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/07/10/mccain-lies-about-his-voting-record-for-veterans/

Bush Gives McCain Credit for GI Bill He Opposed:

http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/06/30/bush-gives-mccain-credit-4-gi-bill-he-opposed/

And, you can share Curtis' experiences as a first time delegate at the convention at his blogspot:

http://integritynowca.blogspot.com/

Fired Up!

The Discrimination Veterans Face

If you go take a walk down many of our streets, most of the people you will run into are in some way tied to a veteran. They could be grandchildren of those who served in World Wars, parents of servicemen and women, brothers and sisters of those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and some of them are veterans themselves.

Many of the veterans of our society have been trying for years to succeed. The country that they once believed in, the freedoms and liberties they fought for, the people they thought they could confide in, all of that seems to be some sort of fairytale of hopes and dreams to save the world and eventually realizing it was never saved to begin with.

I am a veteran of the Iraq war. I have seen many things, people and places that most will never have the opportunity to see. I chose to enlist because I felt I could make a difference, not only in myself, but in my country and the lives of others. I swore to defend my country as a Chemical Operations Specialist in March of 2003, the same day President Bush declared war on Iraq. I can remember watching the television screens as I sat in the MEPS station in Chicago, Illinois and thinking someday I am actually going to end up there. The attacks, the raids, buildings that were set ablaze, Saddam's regime was coming apart and we were all watching it on nationalized television.

I remember how happy the Iraqi civilians seemed to be that we had tore down his statues, his paintings, this world of torture he had created was about to crumble. It was all so reassuring that I was joining something of the greater good. I felt it was my calling, a mission in which I must complete. I had visions of where I wanted to go in my career, and who I wanted to be.

In July of 2003, I went to basic training confident and with pride. I thought that this was the life I was supposed to lead. I had finally found a way to secure my future, and to make my life better in some way. The challenges of basic training made me a stronger individual. I was able to experience true leadership, dedication and motivation from some of the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers above me. The Drill Sergeants carried themselves with such a high standard that I was amazed at how much trust I had in them. I knew from that experience alone that I wanted to become one of the greatest, and most professional soldiers in the military. I wanted to become a Drill Sergeant.

I remember an event that occurred three days before I was supposed to graduate basic training. It was December 14, 2003, and I was currently in Advanced Individual Training. It was early morning and the time had come for us to hit the lines for breakfast chow. We were all waiting in the chow line and as I took my silverware and tray I could hear a round of applause and cheering coming from the tables that seated our soldiers. I got through the chow line pretty fast, grabbing a banana and some juice so as to find out what everyone was so happy about. "Look guys!" shouted a soldier, "Drill Sergeant they caught Saddam Hussein!" stated another. It was amazing, to see so many people who had no idea what was to come in their future military careers.

I served in Ft. Bliss for several months, but due to the fact that I was not happy with the unit, I continually called my branch manager to find a way out. The problem was I was "fenced" which means the Army basically has you locked into a unit. Finally, after months of calling, my branch was willing to work with me to get me out of there. I was sent to Ft. Hood, Texas in November of 2004, and nearly two to three weeks later, I was put on a plane to Taji, Iraq.

I left the United States and got to see the airport of Shannon, Ireland. It was one of those moments where I actually remember thinking, "this is really happening, I am about to go to war," but I tried not to think about it to much. Shortly after our time in Shannon, we arrived in Kuwait. Camp Doha was the place, and I was so glad to see a Starbucks. It kind of gave me a little piece of home and I was already a little homesick as it was because I was missing many of the things I used to take for granted, such as a warm house, a bed, and sleeping peacefully. I went with a few soldiers to the dining facility and then back to the phones to make the calls to everyone who wanted to know I made it to Kuwait. Afterwards, I went to my sleeping area, packed my gear, spoke with a few people and waited for the next day.

The process of going to Iraq went smoothly, I remember sitting on the C-130, looking at the faces of fellow service members who showed an uneasiness about themselves. When we landed in Taji, Iraq it was kind of a shock to some. Others were nothing less than terrified. I on the other hand was simply without emotion at all. It was a feeling I have only felt one time. It was kind of like I had accepted the fact that this is what I was sent to do, or I just wouldn't be there. I remember trying to humor myself by saying "This is Baghdad? wow, it's flat and there's like nothing here!" The pilot of the plane then told me, no this is Taji, but you're right outside of Baghdad. Then my first sergeant came up to the plane and yelled out the names of myself and three soldiers. Both himself and my commander grabbed our bags and my first sergeant turned to each of us and said, "you'll see Baghdad soon enough, let's get you troops settled in your rooms."

The next day, I spent the whole day finding out that I was going to cross-train to work outside of my military occupational specialty. My military specialty was Chemical Operations, however, I was trained within days to work as a motor transport operator. My entire company was always on some sort of convoy. I was assigned under Bravo Company, 27th Main Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division out of Ft. Hood Texas. The experience was like nothing I had ever been through. Some of the things I had witnessed were like something off of a Hollywood film. It was shocking in so many ways, but in other ways very rewarding. I saw a lot of great things come of this war and a lot of bad things right along with it. It was surely an experience to see compassion in a war torn world of terrorism.

I returned from Iraq and served until April 27th of 2006. To say the least, my chain of command railroaded me out of the military. I was set to ETS in July of 2006 and was given a General under Honorable conditions discharge 3 months before the end of my term of service. I have since had difficulties obtaining a government job, and government funding. I reached out to several organizations to try to figure out what it was I needed to do. I was unable to draw unemployment, which ultimately resulted in the repossession of my vehicle. I have lived homeless, gone several days without food, and ultimately my faith in everything kind of went away.

I feel like my country had betrayed me. The country I believed in, that I fought for, the people I thought I was defending was ultimately a cold hearted world that didn't deserve much of anything. I think a lot of what is going on in our country is because the people who live in this nation are so selfish with what they have. There are not very many good, genuine people who are willing to help others, regardless of the outcome. It is rare to find a person that is not out to hurt you, or destroy your spirit.

I have heard from soldiers who have been unable to provide for their children when they have gotten out of the service. They are told such things as they should not expect special treatment because they are veterans. There are soldiers who cannot work at certain jobs, because they are considered to be unworthy of serving in their units based upon a discharge they may have received.

The thing that people need to realize is that not every soldier who has left the military, is a bad individual. Yes, soldiers did swear to defend their country by raising their own right hand and putting on a uniform. The problem lies in the fact that when people go into the military, it is usually because they have a need of some sort. For a lot of people it is the best way to pull themselves out of a situation. Some people join to feed their children, to pay off the thousands of dollars of college loans and debts they are facing, others may enlist because they need a place to stay, or they want to start over in some way. It is very rare that you will find someone who joins just to fight for their country. Although, it does happen in some cases.

Our soldiers are ridiculed, for joining, persecuted for leaving, and mostly forgotten by those they have to face once they are back in the civilian world. These faces, the ones you see, our veterans both old and new deserve more than this. Our society needs to work to find better care for veterans who are disabled. Society needs to work to help veterans who cannot eat, or sleep, or live comfortably in a home. Our government needs to focus on getting veterans back into jobs and take into account all facts of a discharge before basing an employment decision on them.

The bottom line is our country is ungrateful. Veterans deserve more in this world. However, it seems like with our nation being so caught up in their world in which most Americans think only of themselves, it will be extremely hard to change the world we live in. How many times do we pass by a person with a hunger sign and just keep walking? How many times is it going to take for us to look at children who have no home because their parent was killed in action? How many times are we going to allow soldiers who are severely injured both physically and mentally to go without federal aid? What is it going to take? When are we going to stop and care? These are all questions many of our soldiers, your veterans ask themselves everyday. So I believe it is time for everyone to stop, think, and to listen. To go out and make the world a better place even if it's just something as small as making a child smile for the day. We must change our ways for one day we all shall be judged for our actions.

-Ashley N. Miller OIF Veteran

An Appeal to Senator Obama on Gates and Petrayous

Sir,I have spent the last two days watching the news with horror in my heart at the "promotion" of General Petrayous. He is nothing more than a lap-dog for the Bush administration and it pains me to see him rewarded for his "Yes-man" antics. My husband takes extreme pride in serving this country. He has served for almost 24 years from the Air Force, to the Guard and back to active with Army where he has now been for over ten years. An officer in the military MUST be able to face fear and adversity and do what's right in the face of danger. General Petrayous has failed in this mission. The Army, contrary to what the press may push, is not a bunch of lap-dogs. They serve because they are proud of the United States Constitution. My husband would NEVER openly talk ill of his superiors and would if ever interviewed praise his commanders BECAUSE HE HAS TO! The articles of the UCMJ make it illegal for him to say anything but positive. BUT, do not take this as true affirmation of the current administration’s policies, nor should it be considered support of Generals like Petrayous who feel they must become "yes-men" and not take a true stand for their men. A true leader, again, thinks of his men first! General Shinseki and the Admiral that was just "retired" both knew this to be true and spoke out. They were the heroes that Congress should have protected from the monstrosity that is Bush. Congress has failed. You, Senator Obama, are our last hope. PLEASE, I truly beg, do everything in your power to block General Petrayous' promotion. Do not let bad leaders go rewarded.I realize that this may be an unpopular posting. The truth is a dangerous thing and to this I must state my husband has nothing to do with this posting as he might be prosecuted for strong language against a serving General but I, as his wife, have no restrictions and I hear the concern in his voice and I felt the loneliness and worry while my husband was in Iraq. I know the pain of hearing he was Medevaced and worrying that he may die even though he insisted he was ok. The General does not get it sir. He does not comprehend that just throwing more soldiers at a problem is not the answer. You have pledged to get them out of that dissolving country before more soldiers are needlessly killed for Bush and Cheney’s own gain.
I support Moveon.org's stance on General Petrayous in the point he should be known as the Betray-us because he has done just that. He has betrayed his fellow soldiers by not taking a stand. Please do not let him get rewarded. Block him!

No right to say "No"

Well, its pretty much official:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/22/national/main4033774.shtml

The Army is once again preventing people from being released from their duty even after their obiligations end all in the spirit of keeping the War going. Imagine if this was applied to a Wal-Mart worker. The lawsuit would be incredible if Wal-Mart told someone they couldn't quit their job if they wanted to. Its a serious loss of rights. I have been military for over two decades and this is the one of the practices that amazes me that the military can get away with it!

We, in the military can not sue the government nor can we refuse to go. We have to have help from civilians to contact the Congress to prevent these practices. Even during Vietnam, soldiers were allowed to go home after their tours ended. Only under the current "War" do we lose this basic human right to choose how e are employed. Do not get me wrong, I love the military and my life is dedicated to my troops, BUT my troops and others should be allowed the right to say "No."

This basic denial of rights is ONE MORE REASON to have Senator Obama as our next President. With the removal of troops from Iraq, and eventually Afghanistan, our troops will not be "needed."

President Barack Obama

We are going through some growing pains right now. Americans all across the country are waking up to some pretty troubling realizations. We are fighting a war without declaring one, with the sons and daughters of the lower and middle class people of America. These same middle class people's interests are not being looked after by those people who should be, and say they are, looking after them. What makes many of us so damn frustrated is that so many of our fellow average Americans cannot see or admit to what is going on. Some may say, "What matters? They (public officials) are all the same and no one cares anyway." To this I must say, IT DOES MATTER, and if enough individuals stand up together and say, "Enough is enough and we are not going to take this anymore," and take some real action to change things, then they will listen and they will care and things will get done. What is so great and yet so troubling about our country is that the responsibility is put into the hands of the individual...or at least it was intended to be originally. The reason why this is troubling is that apparently people have come to think that someone else will do this work for them. I am here to tell you....they will not, and if they do act on your behalf you cannot be sure that they will act with your best interests at heart. No, it is up to each of us to stand up and do something about the blatant disregard that has been shown towards the American citizen's interests and well-being.
So where does Barack Obama fit into this growing process that we hope is taking place? Let's be frank and honest, he has been a major catalyst for this movement. I have been told that I oversimplify things a bit too much, and maybe I do. However, I think sometimes what we need to hear is not some complicated, smarter-than-you analysis of these issues, but rather a plain-spoken, clear, honest, and aggressive approach to the problems that we are facing as a nation. This is what Barack Obama brings to the table, among many other things. When he stood up for what is right and spoke about what has been on many people's mind, namely race, he showed me why he will be one of the best presidents we have ever had. People, this is leadership. When the country yearns for someone to step up and say it how it is without worrying about what the political ramifications may be, Barack Obama will be there. Not only speeches and rhetoric,no. The man's words follows his deeds. He has not been a "Clinton" politician and that is one reason why the Clinton machine hates him. In their view that had to "fight" to get where they are, and they see this person who comes along and demonstrates that sometimes you can use a different method and get better results. We have some big choices to make in this country. The single best choice we can make is to make Barack Obama our next president. I believe he will help our military refocus our efforts BACK ON Afghanistan and take the fight to those people who will harm us if we allow them to. I believe this totally. At the same time, even with him as our president, the only real way for us to make real change that will last is to get involved ourselves.

Hope is not a dirty word- 2

Have we been so uninspired for so long by our politics that we cannot imagine the possibility of someone coming along who is unique in their approach? We keep trying to frame this movement that surrounds Barack Obama within our recent past… when we should be thinking of it in terms that are more accurate to its essence. In fact, this is new, this is different, and this is something that if it is to be framed at all, must be within the larger and longer-reaching historical context. It is easy for many of us to fall prey to the hope-killing machine that is our mainstream media. When we step aside and outside of that however, we start to realize that this movement to which we call ourselves a part, is so much more than what the evening newscast can grasp…more than they can understand, at least for now. This new thing, this positive movement in our history is up against a wall of cynicism. For so long we have been told that the best that we can hope for in our politicians is that they keep their noses clean most of the time and when they don’t, they don’t get caught…and when they get caught they attempt to spin the truth so fast and so hard that it becomes another truth….something that Webster would be hard-pressed to define. For in deceiving our opposition we have deceived ourselves. The truth will set you free in deed… but if you shackle your truth in hopes of winning whatever short-term battle you may be fighting at the time, you forfeit the core of your followers and betray the essence of your message. If many of us cannot look past our pessimism and hate, those of us that can must bring the light to the darkness, the truth to the disillusioned. We are all the same… at this moment what separates us is this debilitating negative culture of the American political front. Those of us that held out a tiny bit of hope that someday we would get our chance have found that day before us. Those that were battered by years of cutthroat politics and found ourselves engulfed within, so deep that it changed a tiny bit of our spirit.. we will need the consistent influence of those that have committed to the possibility of today….and found great inspiration, direction and a renewing of our national pride and soul. If hope is allowed to be cast as a dirty word, what shall be next?

FOR BLOGGERS EYES ONLY- 2

Not really but I thought it may catch your eye! Hey this is a call out to all my fellow Obama supporters who are blogamaniacs... We need to reflect our campaign's ideas and themes out there in the blogging world.. we have to refrain from insults and negativity... I AM NOT SAYING WE SHOULD NOT DEFEND OUR POSITIONS!! However, people are paying attention now more than ever thanks to this movement and we need to engage others the way we do each other...with respect. This is not only the right thing to do but it also attracts many "undecideds" and some of the oppositions people once they see we are not trying to attack them. You undoubtedly are wondering how I know this... well last night I spoke to a Hillary supporter who expressed concern that many in our community are discouraging others by being a too negative on blogs and comment boards. So please...this is a request....get out there and BLOG,BLOG,BLOG... and let's reflect our own ideas and those of Barack, not Hillary and John.... IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE! thanks, Ken

HEALTH CARE

I hear people calling for universal health care. NOT a bad idea, Think again. Truth is Hillary plan is based off of Canadas PLAN . Which I am sorry to say is failing. WE have a goverment that wants our taxes on time or they will penalize us. But when it comes to them paying us its a long drawn out process that does not care about our timely needs. Canada citizen are haveing to come to America because cases are backed up or there is not enough money for there medical need at the time. I believe everyone should have health care if they want to and would have it if it is affordible. Same governed rates for all. Take time learn, dont get fooled by the NEWS

YES WE CAN '08

What the win in Wisconsin means to me

I think the win in Wisconsin tonight may be overlooked later, when the smoke clears and the next contest is clearly in our sights. However, I see this victory from a deeper perspective. Barack made SIGNIFICANT increases with white males. I was discouraged recently when I spoke to a democratic party county chairperson who spoke in a negative and bigoted way about Barack. I could hardly believe that someone with a postion of resposibility would blab out her personal views without even being asked!! What I see even more clearly now, is that this person is the exception and not the rule. America, and more specifically white America, has grown up just a little more during this process. It gives me tremendous hope to see people of ALL races get inspired by someone who is honest and
full of ideas and determination. Someone who chooses helping others over personal financial gain. And yes, by the way, he is a black man. I do not support Barack because he is black, I support him because I believe in him. Apparently, there are plenty of other white Americans (and black, latino, etc.) that feel the same way as I do. This gives me hope.

Setting the Record straight

Lets look at a few common myths About the military:

1. All Soldiers are bloodthirsty killers. False. Many Soldiers join the Army to provide better for their families, obtain money for their education, or just to serve their country.

2. All Soldiers are for the war in Iraq. False. Many Soldiers, though required by Army regulations to support their commanders intent, that of their commander-in-chief included, harbor serious reservations about this particular use of force, and do not feel premptive war is just.

3. All Soldiers are Republicans. False. Many Patriotic Democrats and Independents serve bravely in the US Armed forces and are waiting for a time when they can again be proud of what they are being called upon to do.

The moral: Don't get too cought up in all the Hype. Soldiers might be a little more sane than the media often depicts them. We of the US armed forces want to be able to trust our government once again to fulfil its obligation to only send us into harms way when our country's security is directly threatened. We need a leader in the white house who is not deaf to the will of the people he serves. We need a leader who will preserve combat power for real threats, not imagined ones or hoaxes. We need a President like Mr. Obama.

Now is the time to take a stand against the irresponsible employment of US military assets. The strain that the Iraq and Afgan wars have placed on the US armed forces has seriously jeoperdized our national security Those in the military know all too well how the life-cycle-of-units philosophy has had Army organizations spending a year or more deployed, only to return home with the mission of preparing to return to battle within a year. This has left our coutry without a readily deployable combat force. All of our units are either tied up in Iraq or Afganistan, or are in the year-long process of recovering from combat deployments, while at the same time experiencing personell shortages as Soldiers are changing duty stations, only to be sent right back in to the fray. There is no strategic reserve, as National Guard and reserve forces are being utilized in nearly the same fashion. The question on everyones mind is, what do we do if we find ourselves facing another enemy in this radically changing world?

America needs to adapt to the changing world situation, by making use of deplomacy, sanctions, and showing force when necessary. But America cannot possibly do this when any threat we might make can be reasily laughed offt as empty because all of our assets are curently overloaded as it is. Senator Obama's plan to end the fighting (and senseless dying) in Iraq will be a welcome relief to the Soldiers consigned to return there again and again over the next decade by the Republican go-the-distance philosophy.

At some point the Iraqi people must choose to take ownership of their situation or allow their country to fall inot disarray, either way it is their country and their choice. The Invasion and occupation of Iraq is a mistake that it is high time we recognized and discontinued.

After listening to Senator Obama speak I am inclined believe that he is the candidate who can bring such a remedy.

Silent Soldier Speaks Out

Many people are not aware that much of what is portrayed in the media as Soldier opinion is nothing of the sort. Its time to set the record straight. Soldiers are not permitted by regulations to speak negatively about their curent commander-in-chief. Soldiers are not allowed to give their personal opinions on national level matters (especially while in uniform orwhen specifically identified as a Soldier), but are provided special classes on how to react to media where they are spoon-fed talking points to regurgitate. This, we are told, is to prevent the media from misconstruing the opinion of a single soldier or officer for official policy. Ths makes sense at first glance, but it can create other serious misunderstandings. Let me explain.

The problem comes about when the news media interviews a Soldier, get the standard Public Affairs generated talking-points, and then present this to the country as Soldier opinion. The next days news includes headlines like; "Soldiers support the war," or "Marines want to continue the fight." Let me make it abundantly clear to those who are actually interested in knowing what Soldiers really think, that they have yet to see or hear a Soldier speak of their personal feelings about Iraq, or our curent foreign policy, on television. When you hear all the hype about how Soldiers supposedly support the war in Iraq, desire increased public support for that war, or think we are winning, realize that this is all pre-selected talking points, and has nothing to do with actual opinions.

I find myself somewhat tentative to even speak about this subject publicly. I can only take comfort in reminding myself that I remain somewhat anonymous here, and that since as a Soldier I stand ready to fight and die to protect the right to freedom of speech, I should not be afraid myself to exercize it.

As a member of the armed forces I can assure anyone who cares, that there exists a significant number of Soldiers who feel, just as many other Americans do, that grave miscalculations (or possibly even abuses) have in all likelihood taken place, and are looking to see dramatic change in the way our government works. My collegues are brave and patriotic men and women who are willing to put their all on the line for thier country, but they are also sick and tired of getting shot at and watching close friends die for what seems to be no good reason. The benefits just do not seem to outweigh the costs. We pledge our lives, and we only expect one thing in return... that those lives will be risked only when aboslutely necessary. We do not think that this is too much to ask.

Simply put, Mr. Obama represents the change that many Soldiers are looking for.

Obama, before its too late.

Darkest Before The Dawn

America stands at a very unique point in history. For months, this moment has been brewing, but few have taken notice of it. The opportunities for America are endless, though our challenges are great. America is at a point where our power is still the greatest in the world, though our standing is low. The challenges we face are not as great as the passions have to improve ourselves. These opportunities, these passions, are exemplified in the man who is on covers of newspapers around the world: Barack Obama.

Flying somewhat under the radar since he announced his candidacy in February 10, most people around the country had the assumed feeling that he would be another footnote in the 2008 Presidential Election. He was to be the man who carried lots of hope, but no votes. Today, just as it happened in Iowa, those thoughts are being put to rest. Young people from around the country have been showing up to his events in throngs. Many of the events where Obama speaks are packed to the brim, and still more are literally overflowing. This movement may seem to have a core of young people, but there is no doubt that the attraction of a Barack Obama presidency does not stop there.

Reporters from news agencies all over the world are covering the Obama campaign as something inherently unique. There is a ‘feeling’ you get at the rallies that is difficult to describe. Obama’s speeches hearken back to the days of great orators like Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy, and Bobby Kennedy. The message of change is communicating especially well for Obama, even though other Democratic candidates have been using that word often.

As this is being written, reports are coming across the wire of the Clinton camp being worried about a double digit loss to Obama in New Hampshire. Word is getting out that the Culinary Workers Union, the largest union in Nevada, is looking to endorse Barack Obama tomorrow. With the Nevada primary only 11 days away, that means a likely win for Obama there as well. The news continues, though.

This morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Tim Russert talked about reports that throughout the country “black pride is rising.” This shows promise for the Obama campaign in South Carolina, where half of voters are African-American. South Carolina’s primary is January 26th. Ultimately, there is a strong chance that Barack Obama could come out of the first 4 big primaries 100% victorious.

This brings us to a question that many Christian patriots have been asking, particularly since the election of Southern Baptist Jimmy Carter in ’76, followed by the rise and decline of the Moral Majority: How do American Elections fall into the will and purpose of God in our world?

No doubt, this question has answers that many will disagree on. Without question, if you ask Dr. James Dobson, conservative leader of Focus on the Family, you will hear that God’s most important issue in this or any election is abortion. However, should you ask Jim Wallis, editor of Sojourners and convener of Call to Renewal, he will explain God’s passion for social justice and smart environmental policy. Millions of Christians have subscribed to the Right or Left based on where they see God working in our world, and still millions more stay fairly independent. It is fair to say, however, that God is certainly interested in the election of the person who is known as “The Most Powerful Person in the World.”

In the election years of 2000 and 2004, the political genius of Karl Rove came into play by actively enrolling the conservative evangelical Christian body to help elect George W. Bush. Many were convinced that once Bush was elected, abortion would end, gay marriage would be outlawed, and the blessings of God would pour out upon this nation. With a Republican congress for six years, there is no doubt there was a strong chance of those things coming to pass. However, those results are yet to be seen.

Meanwhile, America has fallen into a very dangerous situation. We are embroiled in a war that has recently shown security promises, but lacks to display any form on long-term success. Our deficit has become an annual expectancy, along with our debt rising over 50% in the last 7 years. Unemployment is rising, and education levels are stagnant. The opinion of America in the world has been consistently poor over the last 5 years. Al Qaeda is growing stronger in the northwest region of Pakistan, and militant Islam is attracting more followers every day.

Perhaps someone should mention the old adage: “It is always darkest before the dawn.” More and more, this writer is becoming convinced that it was, indeed, God’s will to allow President Bush to be in office for 8 years, though not for the same reasons many that voted for him would believe.

Broken promises and a weak economy could have spelled certain death for the Republican Party in 2004. However, a weak candidate and shifty positions enumerated a defeat for John Kerry and the Democratic Party. In the midst of defeat, however, millions of Americans were inspired by an unknown Illinois State Senator with a funny name. At the time, Barack Obama was running for the United States Senate, and his message was almost identical to what you hear today.

Without the failures of the Bush presidency, there would not have been the opportunity for Barack Obama to introduce himself to the country in such a powerful way. Without a Republican victory in 2004, we would be looking to re-elect John Kerry or replace him with a new Republican. Instead, here we are.

Here we are, at what many are calling a new movement in American politics, and perhaps America as a whole. Here we are, with an African-American who has been in the US Senate less than 3 years, leading in early state polls and climbing in the nationwide polls. He has run a campaign taking no money from Washington PAC’s or federal lobbyists. Over 500,000 people have made over 800,000 donations, both numbers records for any campaign in history. In Iowa, the country saw a record turnout for young people and for the electorate overall. In New Hampshire, the country is seeing a similar turnout.

Barack Obama has a unique message. America can be better. Politicians do not have to be corrupt. Republicans and Democrats from across the country can work together to face the real problems that face America. We can lead the world in every form of progress. We can trust our President. These all seem like things that God would want to see in our nation.

Perhaps, if we follow the will of God, the Sun may rise, a new day will dawn, and a new President will lead our country to a blessed future.

Airman 1st Class Andrew Bary

January 8, 2008

I met Senator Obama in person!!!

Friends:

I attended a Foreign Policy discussion with Senator Obama and Richard Danzig in Washington, D.C. (Fri, Nov 30th). It was hosted by DC for Obama and Young Lawyers for Obama at the Carnegie Institute. About 300-400 people filled the small theater style room. Most were maxed out donors. Older gov't types. (This was not a rally) A few of us paid less and sat in the back rows.

Sen. Obama conducted a foreign policy Q & A. The discussion started around 8:15 and he had to leave at 9:00 sharp to catch a flight to Iowa. Thoughout the evening he expounded upon the great efforts of the military and how they are over tasked with some duties suited for diplomats.

Time was running short so I frantically raised my hand and asked the last question of the night. My question was about the establishment of AFRICOM, permanent stationing of troops in Africa and potential fault lines. I followed up with a request to take a photo with our candidate. He answered the question and I took a photo with him afterwards.

I was impressed how during the discussion that centered on the Middle East and Persia, Sen. Obama emphasized the importance of cultural awareness and the hazards of referring to all people of one religion or region as "terrorist" or "jihadist." He is well-versed and intellectually thoughtful. In a word: Presidential. But, if you're reading this you already know that.

I'd post the photo if I knew how. Thanks to the volunteers who coordinated this fantastic discussion.

Fired up,

Major Man

Numbers that never add up!

I am watching Gen Petraeus report to Congress on C-SPAN. Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was brown-nosing the success in Iraq. As I listen the numbers that she regurgitated and then as I hear our Generals regurgitate the numbers of "progress", I keep thinking to myself, "We at the lowest level in the Army, can't report solid numbers"

The reason I say this is because, I've noticed that my time in the Air Force and Army,we report numbers that may or may not be accurate. I've noticed that people in general like to exaggerate to make them self look better or used as a tool to defend their actions.

Every time I hear reports, Its hard for me to believe reports of Data that reflect numbers because as the numbers make it up the chain of command, the numbers gets skewed. I currently deal with numbers and data that is reported to me and then to higher levels. I never feel comfortable with the data that I collect from the lower levels.

There are so many things that I wish was done right but I believe this war is going to be reported by numbers as to show progress. Remember Vietnam, that was all about skewed victories measured by enemy casualties.

Let me know what you guys think about the data that is reported on TV. Talk to you soon.

Military for Obama

I noticed a trend when i talk to fellow Military comrades. I think Obama brings hope to Military members as he represents a leader that we can trust as our CNC. A lot of us want and need to him to lead us.

Many people in general automatically are supporting Hillary only because of her name and don't even know who Obama is. Obama and his supporters somehow need to promote more who he is. I was training in South Carolina and everywhere I went, I discussed our current candidates and many didn't know Obama and what he represents.

Another random thought, There are some people in the Military who think Obama is a Muslim running for president. Educated people believing what ever they heard on the news and what there fellow friends told them. It is amazing.

What can we do to promote a better candidate. Not only does America need Obama but other Nations would benefit with President Obama steering our country into the right direction. Thanks and talk to you all soon.

LEO

Random Thoughts

Note to the Reader, There will be grammar and spelling errors.

I am sitting here at the Denver USO waiting for my evening flight to Boise, ID. At first I was upset because the Airlines were affected by the weather and in turn every action there is a re-action or what I am saying is someone is going to get affected and not every involved person in the process will be happy or satisfied. How does this relate to my random thinking? I am not sure. But, I sit here in this USO looking at men/women who serve our country to include myself. Well first let me explain a little about myself. It may or may not be relevant but I have 8 more to get on the plane and reunite with my wife Sandra.

Ok. I am originally from Mexico. I was born in a small town near Culiacan, Sinaloa. My birth Certificate says Rancho Viejo, Sinaloa, Mexico. (Side note – I decided to copy and paste this into Word, in the event my web-browser fails.) My Mother’s name is Pilar Heraldez, she currently resides in Phoenix, AZ. I also have a brother with the same Mother/Father. Well, in the late 70’s my soon to be stepfather met my mother and it was then followed by him adopting my brother and I and bringing us to a suburb in Chicago. When I tell my life to people, I usually expand on more details because my existence and opportunity that I have is by chance and coincidence. My Step-dad could be a chapter, if I were to write a book. But, I am not an author or do I claim to be.

I am not sure if I should use names but, why not. Paul is my step-dad and Pilar is my mother. My brother and I were brought to the Chicago area at the very tail end of 1979 or beginning of 1980. From this point on, I will focus just on my life and try to be as accurate as possible. We lived in Chicago for 8 or so years before moving to Richland Center, WI. Small town that is not ready for change. But then again that is my opinion. This is where I graduated from high school. Public education was great to me but the culture shock to a 99% Anglo-Saxon school was an experience in its own. I realize now that the kids who called me spic, border-hopper, Pedro, bean-eater, and a bunch of other names, did it because they were passing on what they heard growing up. Well, this in a sense made me grow up faster and learn that the world isn’t fair.

During my senior year, I was focused on attending college and I knew I needed a way to cover the costs involved in attending a major University. I did what my stepfather did (he was drafted), my brother (Army Reserves) and I enlisted into Active Duty Army. I was 17 years old when I decided to take this next challenge/chapter of my life. At this point, I was still a Resident Alien and wasn’t thinking of applying for my citizenship. And yes, there are many people serving in the military that aren’t eligible to vote. That sort of bothers me but that is our system and you got people who can’t vote serving. That should make every American think and see if they have something at stake when we send our military to fight for the decisions of our elected officials. Just think about it. Have you done your part for your freedom? (Freedom to vote and play an active role in our government.)

What is my point and where am I going with this. First let me explain the rest of my story up until this moment here at the USO lounge. The first three years after high school I would get stationed in Germany and deploy to Bosnia for 9 months. At the three-year mark, I transferred to the National Guard while I was attending University of Wisconsin-Madison. After two years in the Guard, I transferred into my Brothers Army Reserves medical unit. In 2001, I graduated College and completed my 8-year Army Obligation. I didn’t re-enlist or extend because as a Resident Alien, you are only allowed to serve 8 years. Well, a month after I left the Army, my citizenship package was completed and I swore in at the Ronald Regan Court-House.

This opened up new doors for me. Not only could I vote, I was able to apply for federal agencies or become a Military officer. I applied for the FBI and the Air Force Officer Training School. The process was going well for both agencies. The Air Force responded in 10 or so months after testing and interviews. So, I now would become an officer in the Security Forces career field. This career field is unique because they think and operate like the Army and very recognizable in the Air Force.

My career was going well until the Air Force announced a Reduction in Force. I was like holy cow; you are going to cut 60-75% of my career field for 2002-03 officers. I thought I was going to be safe because of my time in. But, the Air Force’s vision was to cut Manpower by 57,000 and Inventory to cover the contract of the new planes. The contracts were for the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. I didn’t under stand. My career field was a ground troop who does Army missions and you are cutting us why? Well, every action there is a re-action. First, Accessions brought to many of us in 2002-03 without thinking it through. (Budget wise and rank wise). I was given the opportunity to take a severance package or to put in for a Blue to Green Package. (Intra-Service)

I decided to give the Army a chance and see what I can offer the Army as an officer. I would not lose any rank and in fact promote to captain 4 months ahead of when I would of got in the Air Force. This time I went into a the Human Resource Career field called “Adjutant General.” You lead and manage personal actions and of course do extra petty tasks. When I made the transfer my wife stayed at Boise to finish her masters while I attended the Captain’s Career Course at Fort Jackson, SC. (This is where I had the opportunity to meet Barack Obama in Florence.) Didn’t have the chance to tell him my story but I did file a Congressional on the Air Force down-sizing.

Today, After 7 or so months of training, I will re-unite with my wife and help her drive/move to our new home near Fort Hood, TX. I then will be deploying to Iraq in the months coming. I will see my wife for 7 days before flying out to train at Fort Irwin, CA. So, I sit here waiting to get on a plane. Remember, the first plane I missed due to the bad weather Midwest area.

Ok. Every Action there is a re-action (Cause and Affect). I can talk about our war policies, Reduction in Force, Joining the military, voting and so on. Anything we do will affect someone else. I look at these troops here at the USO. We are the extension of the elected officials. We are at the mercy of their signatures. This includes all branches and the people who serve. But, The Army is taking the brunt of the signatures of our elected officials. We are overworked, tired, lack of equipment, uncontrollable spending, and the list goes on and on. It affects our budget, operations of our government and the decision making process. And most importantly, It weakened our ties with all the inhabitants of this Great Earth. How do other Nations look us at? Cause and Affect my friend.

Please feel free to add to my random thinking. Please remember, I am not an English major or do I pretend to be. Take care and please be active in our political process. Do what is right for our country. Put someone in charge that has a vision and someone who can repair the damage we have caused. I believe Barack Obama is the answer.

tales from the field: Michelle & Barack Obama conquer NYC

So the bigger more official Obama '08 button they gave me as a volunteer for the March 9th NYC event worked its magic for the entire night.

But let's start at the beginning. I witnessed both the 6PM $1,000-$5,000 event as well as the 8PM $100 event. Michelle introduced her husband both times. And the verdict is in - MICHELLE OBAMA IS THE FIRST LADY OF AMERICA'S FUTURE; in every conceivable way!

I found this poem online that embodies much of what's so fantastic about Michelle Obama:

a woman

there is a woman who cares
what i have to say
there is a woman who loves
me for who i am
there is a woman who says
what she wants
there is a woman who does
what she feels
there is a woman who creates
art through life
there is a woman who sees
life in art
there is a woman who sings
for those oppressed
there is a woman who acts
to save all women
there is a woman who cannot
know how we need her

In both of Michelle's introductions (which were not identical but exceptionally well tailored to the respective crowds) she said a leader is someone with the ability to "move us from passive indifference to active engagement."

That is exactly what Senator Obama has done for me. I fully admit it.

Before moving forward, it is so very important to note that both Michelle & Barack addressed the two different crowds with equal passion, integrity, intelligence, & candor. One would expect to find greater investment in the people who gave more money, but as far as I could see - the two levels of contribution were equally appreciated and privy to the same capacity for empathy. That speaks so very well to the kind of future we are in for AFTER WE WIN THIS!
"If we focus on what we have in common, there is no challenge we cannot meet" Senator Obama promised both crowds, "I am an imperfect instrument in this process...people are coming out because this is a vehicle for your hopes and dreams."

And I believed him.

I happened to be closer to the stage at the $100 event where every cell phone in the place snapped shots of Senator Obama speaking before the American flag. I wish I could have videotaped the techno-savvy-generation image of the wave of raised hands bearing cell phones ALL CAPTURING THIS IMAGE OF OUR FUTURE PRESIDENT STANDING BEFORE THE AMERICAN FLAG.

And it even gets better...

In the lobby, I hooked up with the Brooklyn for Barack crew who first introduced me to the grassroots effort. We headed down to SPICE where this table of 3 beautiful young women noticed my bigger and bolder Obama '08 button. We reveled in awe of Michelle Obama and they expressed enough interest that I'm sure they will soon be regulars on this site.

And then, the table beside them (who were not present at the event) reached out to the button & after talking with them, plans are in the works to spread our grassroots efforts into their Bronx stomping grounds.

"If liberty and equality, as is thought by some, are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when all persons alike share in the government to the utmost." -Aristotle

Akin

tales from the field: if you want him to win

So I Assistant Directed this wildly successful benefit reading at The Gatehouse Theater in Harlem yesterday with my Obama button on my lapel. Not only did it draw the attention of scores of supporters who gave me their email addresses to keep them abreast of what's going on within the grassroots efforts, but there a few middle-of-the-road people searching for a reason to Support Senator Obama. Granted NYC artists are generally fairly liberal people but it is also New York (Senator Clinton's stomping ground).
I finally got back to Jersey by about 2AM to find well over a hundred emails and messages from Senator Obama supporters requesting support NOT for our candidate but for their individual projects. We are so very lucky to have the internet to put Democracy back in the hands of the people, yet I find myself concerned that we are splintering into thousands of small efforts that are working against each other. I am particularly worried about the Marches & Calls for Demands simply because we must not be perceived as bullying our way into the White House. Staging a march? What are you marching for? Making a Demand? What are you demanding? Generally you March, demand, & sign petitions to get candidates on the ballot who otherwise would not be there. When the primaries roll around Senator Obama WILL be on the ballot. Anyone invested enough to step up will show up at the polls & check off his name. No single politician or even group of politicians can hoist Senator Obama to the presidency and they certainly are not going to do so because a ton of people marched or demanded it. You want to demand something - do it with your vote. POLITICIANS DO NOT HAVE TO LISTEN TO PEOPLE WHO DO NOT VOTE. Because if you do not vote, you tell the government that your voice does not matter. You have only to listen to Senator Obama's Selma speech to deduce what his campaign needs from us: GET PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR HIM (IN THE PRIMARIES - because the primaries are where he will beat Senator Clinton). Of course Fundraising is essential to marketing any candidate today. As soon as the news media can say a bunch of angry people are staging marches in the name of and making demands in the name of Senator Obama - we lose those middle-of-the-road voters; we lose all those possibilities. And that is what this election & this excitement about Senator Obama is actually about - POSSIBILITY.So please, please, keep our eyes on the prize: VOTER TURNOUT & FUNDRAISING. Any activities geared towards spreading the word about Senator Obama will be integral to increasing Voter Turnout amongst his supporters (i.e. Cousin Pooky in the Selma speech).
I hate to douse anyone's civic propeller but we've got to be in this to win. Waging marches and making demands is precisely what the GOP is hoping we will do. If you want him to win, he must be allowed to blaze his trail without disorganized grassroots efforts shoving him further and further left like screaming banshees. While left is a perfectly fine place for a citizen to be, it is not a strong place for any realistic presidential candidate to be. Like it or not, we must be realistic: IF YOU WANT SENATOR OBAMA TO WIN, HE MUST NOT BE SEEN AS LEFTIST.
BARACK THE PRIMARIES

At the reception following last night's Money & Politics panel many urged me to consider the other Democratic hopefuls. One of my goals with this campaign is to get involved in voter registration amongst people are not, to quote Michael Waldman, "the usual suspects". I'm also interested in helping get Senator Obama supporters voting in the primaries because it is THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE AN IMPACT.

If you vote in the primaries your voice is LOUD!!!

So few people vote in the primaries (in some states only a quarter of the registered voters hit the primaries) so if we can get folks to weigh in, we will have really accomplished something. Movie stars, athletes, & singers are perceived as having clout because of the way they are presented to the public. If people saw that primary voters have clout (albiet a different manner of clout), they would step up.

As many of us have a full year befre our primaries, I'm interested in developing a concrete 12 month strategy. We are so fortunate to have this site to organize ourselves. Lack of organization is the quickest way to burn out. Order and organization are continually the downfall of grassroots efforts. I have a few PR friends but I still need some people with marketing backgrounds & people all over the country - from Seattle to Miami - who are up for the marathon. The first step is to formulate a strategy & slogan. Soon as we have laid out a concrete strategy, I'll build out some web pages.

"No steam or gas drives anything until it is confined. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined." - Harry Emerson Fosdick D.D.

tales from the field: our wounded

So my trusty button attracted a small legion of lovely ladies in the supermarket as I picked up the March 5th Newsweek with this cover story: "Failing Our Wounded". We got to discussing Senator Obama & the Vets. However, I was not actually comfortable using their suffering to plug our canditate. I mostly listened. I must say, no matter what party affiliation you have chosen or what candidate you support, you gotta support these men and women.

You just gotta.

Bout a decade ago I was paralyzed and I spent a few months in a physical rehab hospital with a bunch of other paralyzed guys. I can tell you the battle to regain your mobility is daunting, invogorating, isolating, ego strengthening, educational, and awe inspiring. I cannot heal these men and women, but I can urge all of you good people to hear their stories. <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17316437/site/newsweek/

I">Link must admit that the more I heard these supermarket ladies go on about their connections to soldiers overseas or soldiers at home, I was less & less concerned with persuading them. I left trusting that they were already armed with all they needed to come to their wn decision. Suppose I should thank them for the moment of reflection.

Only time you'll find success after work is in the dictionary.

Akin

www.atthatdrop.com/nycmarch9

www.atthatdrop.com/whybarack

tales from the field: an untelevised revolution

So the trusty lil Obama button drew more questions as I searched about Jersey for Joe Trippi's book The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: Democracy, the Internet, and the Overthrow of Everything. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Revolution-Will-Not-Televised-Everything/dp/0060779594/sr=1-1/qid=1172370923/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-3168562-8333235?ie=UTF8&s=books

I">Link got asked lots of questions by people in bookstores today - some I didn't know the answers to - but there seemed to be a significant number of people out there with very basic questions about how we elect our presidents. Granted, I mostly got asked what I knew about David Geffen's comment but I had to explain the Electoral College & Florida a few times. I discovered that simply being someone who backs Senator Obama tells Joe-Down-The-Block that you might know a lil somethin' about this politics game. It got me thinking that WE COULD BE THE ONES.

Ya know?

We could be the ones who help those People-Down-The-Block claw their way outta the mud-pit-of-apathy. We've all been stuck down there at some point. In fact, somebody on this site told me that Senator Obama has gotten her excited about politics for the very first time in her adult life.

"Every generation needs a new revolution" - Thomas Jefferson

"No real social change has ever been brought about without a revolution - Revolution is but thought carried into action." - Emma Goldman

"Up there it's their time. But down here, it's our time. It's our time down here." - Mikey (the Goonies)

Let's be the ones.

Akin

And if anyone has read Trippi's book, I'd be very interested to know what you thought of it.

tales from the field: our advantages

Swaggering about Jersey wearing my Obama 08 button, I've had my first 3 real interactions with oposition.

1. Last night, I hit a Central Jersey bar my sister tends bar at. A few 20somethings asked about my button and I started telling them reasons to support Senator Obama. Thanks to some of the reasons you good people on this site have contributed to www.atthatdrop.com/whybarack , guys in this lil' bar got a riled up. The War & the Vets were the big selling point. Eyes lit up as these Gen X & Gen Y guys spoke fondly of childhood friends who are still overseas. The hunger for hope of safe returns was infectious and each story led to someone else chiming in about the kid he used to play kickball with down the street. Then I asked who was registered to vote and the wind fell out of most of the sails in the place. The owner was open to a voter registration drive "on a slow night" but he didn't think it would be very successful. Nevertheless, it was actually exciting to witness how a bar full of guys who didn't think much of their ability to affect change got fired up about possibly getting their buddies home. As we move forward and learn more, I'm optomistic that we'll cultivate an effective strategy to harness that energy to our advantage.

2. This afternoon, a Checkout Lady at the local Stop & Shop told me she preferred the Republicans. I asked her why. She grimaced, "Just cause..." Again, that is to our advantage.

3. This evening, the cashier at an office supplies store volunteered that she was voting for Senator Clinton. I smiled politely, "Senator Clinton is a worthy opponent." The cashier giggled, "It's either gonna be a woman or a black guy. Such a shame though..." I just nodded. The cashier continued, "It's such a shame; such a shame - that poor Anna Nicole verdict." While we're all blogging and organizing, many people who sort-of-support-our-opposition are focusing on Britney Gone Wild. This is somehow to our advantage.

And lastly, all 3 of these interactions were with people who voluntarily inquired about our little blue button. And naive as it may sound, that is to our advantage. We just have to harness Senator Obama's curiosity factor.

You may not be interested in strategy, but strategy is interested in you.” - Leon Trotsky

Akin
