Caribbean Day Parade Tabling

Approximately 1 million people will attend the Caribbean Day Parade on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn on Monday, September 7. Help us spread information about our broken health care system and the Obama plan for health care reform.

We will set up tables along the parade route with flyers listing online sources for issues such as comparative costs and results of health care spending (US vs. other countries), the economics of health care, how we will actually save a lot of money by investing in health care reform now, etc. We will also provide info on how to connect with other people who want to bring real change to our health care system and help people to get involved in pressuring Congress to pass a health care reform bill with a strong public option.

We have trained, rallied, made calls, raised funds, registered voters, invigorated the World and celebrated under the leadership of candidate, presumptive nominee, nominee, president-elect Obama. Now let's get busy and "change america" and the world under the leadership of President Obama. January 19th we kicked off our free Adult Literacy Training for the community of Springfield Gardens New York through Bethsalem Baptist Church, and The Village Adoption Develoment Program for Mongeri, Sierra Leone West Africa, through Edward Perry Ministries and The Sierra Leone Africa America Assistance Foundation. The Perry Family Foundation of Texas will also review adding an international scholarship program at it's next annual meeting/family reunion during the fourth of July Weekend 2009. We watched Senator Obama speak tonight on the loss of his grandmother,Madelyn Dunham(1922-2008), and offer our condolences. On the eve of this election, we send our deepest respects. As Senator Obams said;

".. it's hard to talk about."

Grandmothers in America are often overlooked in the contributions they make everyday. Some are the only parents children know. His comments invoked memories of my grandmother. During the Civil Rights era, we often watched the news together. Dr. King's marches, and arrests, George Wallace's defiant speech on segregation..."now and forever."

I wish that she, and my late father had lived to see the movement, and political tsunami of Senator Obama.

...to see America at the dawn of a new attitude.

I researched Senator Obama's state website, and as a member of Congress, to read his positions on issues from Civil Rights to Darfur, to Education. I read both books, and made a decision millions now have, that Barack Obama is a leader for our time.

Hope has arisen in this campaign, and they are not just youngsters. Americans of all hues, ages, and backgrounds are inspired by Obama's story. The transformation of ideas into action, and the inspiration to make dreams realized. Change we need after the direction this clueless administration took us-- war, and economic chaos. Fighting low by using race as a fear factor.

No matter what happens tomorrow, Barack Obama made history in fund raising, in grassroots organizing, in changing the politics of fear, and his supporters recognized this as a movement for change.

Tomorrow we shall see, and make sure, they don't steal this one!

America must choose between a past scarred by the memory of Emmett Till, to a time when we are judged;

"...by the content of one's character".

Many of us over 30 who worked for this day know America was a very different place during the 50's and 60's, and the 21st century smear attacks against Senator Obama have been sowed with a page from that legacy.

Tomorrow, we have a choice. Pray this nation gets it right.

I will be at the polls at 6:00 A.M tomorrow.

IRAQ WAR VETERANS RELEASE EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS OF MIDEAST OCCUPATIONS
WINTER SOLDIER BENEFIT CONCERT AND BOOK DEBUT, OCT. 30, 2008

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) has teamed up with the NYC management company The Wink Winks to craft an evening of rock and reflection to celebrate the release of Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan: Eyewitness Accounts of the Occupations from Haymarket Books. On Thursday, October 30, 2008, veterans, musicians, and the general public will converge at Sullivan Hall to raise awareness with readings from the book by Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans, and to raise money for continued advocacy with performances by great bands from NYC and around the country.

In the spring of 2008, inspired by the Vietnam-era Winter Soldier Investigation, IVAW gathered outside Washington, D.C., and testified to atrocities they personally witnessed or participated in while deployed in the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. The book presents their powerful words, photographs, and documents from this historic event, with a Foreword from Anthony Swofford, author of Jarhead.

Along with readings from Winter Solder: Iraq and Afghanistan, there will be performances by musicians from around the country who support the continued work of IVAW, including the Brooklyn based bands System Noise, The Volunteers, Wounded Buffalo Theory, Lachi, Trevor Earth, the Connecticut band doublethink, and a special solo performance by Milwaukee's Otto Ohlsson from Into Arcadia. Special guests and additional artists TBA.

Sullivan Hall is located at 214 Sullivan St. in New York's Greenwich Village. Tickets are available for presale through TicketWeb (www.sullivanhalltix.com) for a discounted $15, or $20 at the door. Proceeds will go to the New York City Chapter and the Winter Soldier Committee of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Doors will open at 7:30PM with readings and performances to begin shortly thereafter. The Republicans have some nerve. For the three days of their convention they used every opportunity to insult Democrats: calling us names, turning "liberal" into an epithet, calling everyone with a brain and an education an "elitist," challenging our morals, values and patriotism. Yet the moment Barack invokes an image he has used since the primaries to illustrate how the Republican's cheap rhetoric cannot hide the fact they offer us no solutions for the problems facing the Country, they immediately fly into a tizzy and choose to be offended because the image has a passing similarity to the one offered by Gov. Palin: whereby she described herself as a dog wearing lipstick.

You gotta hand it to the Republicans. They really know how to play this game: call you every name in the book, then claim to be insulted by something you didn't say or mean, and then blame you for all the mudslinging that's been going on. Truly impressive. Now that is the definition of a Pig in Lipstick.

Whose really running against Obama on the Republican side?

Wait a minute, --- whose running for president on the Republican side?
John McCain is using his “surprise” nominee to mask Bush’s agenda.
It’s reported that Republican women, and so-called Hillary “Pumas” are supporting her.
Won’t they be shocked when the truth comes out?
The Republicans think we’re STUPID to put it mildly.
The party that has brought America to the brink of destruction, both ECONOMICALLY
INTELLECTUALLY, not to mention a lack of international respect, and moral decline, now they want to replace HOPE with McCain’s parade style of decision-making.
Whose running for president, what are the qualifications, and issues voters need to decide on?
One, we need an inspirational leader, not another “Decider.” AMERICANS don’t need a leader who hides behind a woman’s skirt, who selected her to attract “her kind,” who deserted his injured wife, and (while married), dated a woman for five years, much younger, and richer, than his own. Is this our hero? Is this the man we want as president?
Barack Obama selected a committee, took his time, and was credited by many for making a wise decision in Joe Bidden. Watching in the sidelines, I imagined McCain as the character “Dr. Evil” thinking he needed SOMEONE to take the spotlight off history. This is the man who voted against making Dr, King’s birthday, a legal holiday. How does his VP feel?
And if this isn’t the most shameful form of pandering I have ever seen, I don’t know what his.
The racial pot brewing in this race never began with Senator Obama, as most of us know. As an early supporter I saw his potential, and due to history, and recent news, we’re all aware of the danger. The four suspects arrested for the despicable plot are not the first, and this is another area the media has not "blown up" the fact they aren’t being charged as terrorists, but “meth heads.” Where is the outrage over this miscarriage of justice? We need to demand that FOX news, and all the rest adhere to the basic principles of journalism, and focus on pertinent information, instead of being a mouthpiece for Karl Rowe.

While they distract the public with the “pit bull in lipstick” who is AGAINST ABORTION EVEN IN THE CASE OF RAPE OR INCEST, WHO WEARS A MASK, AND IS REALLY representing BUSH’S THIRD TERM.

THIS CHOICE IS full of false pretense, a resume full of holes, (read the interview with Ms. Alaska), and there are more questions he and KARL ROWE are trying to stop now, as Bush approves of Mc Cain’s choice (but they don’t want us to know). The “ Trooper-gate scandal is just the beginning. The mask will be revealed.
The future of our national security, respect, economy, and moral standing cannot be trusted to people who react irrationally, or who make decisions based on political expediency.
A candidate who lies on his opponents, or who distorts their record wish to eliminate Voters Rights. I would not trust someone whose character, temperament, judgment, and unwillingness to listen to the counsel of others, a wise choice.
Barack Obama and Joe Bidden are a perfect fit. The gathering of a diverse, and packed stadium upset the Republicans so badly they reacted the same way in their choice, -simply because it was done to take the focus off eight years of misery.
We don’t want any reruns of George Bush and his extremist views. The Republican choice is still more of the same. Let just present the facts, and decide.

Over 37 million Americans felt the spirit of the DNC’s send off for Barack Obama. Our work is not over. Not as long as the Rove/McCain smears continues as they shamelessly work their brand of fear. Let ISSUES & SOLUTIONS for all AMERICANS decide this election.

Relax, relate, release

I.believe "ready to work hard to get Barry elected" — Wed, 10 Sep 2008 04:49:57 EDT

I am amazed at what has happened these last few days. The blog and listservs have turned into a panic. It's almost like people haven't realized that this is a GE and things get heated during a GE.

To all those that are feeling a sense of doom, please calm down. Remember you can't make good decisions when you do it from a place of panic.

Obama, Axelrod, Gibbs and Plouffe put together a campaign that was impropable two years ago. They know what they are doing, they are smart and they have us. We worked hard for this campaign and we need to keep working hard like it's day one. McCain has Rove acolytes and Bush people running in his campaign. This give us a slight advantage because we know they are tricksters. Karl Rove speaks out of the side of his face and whne you hear him speak you know that it is never the truth. We cannot allow them to distract us with their shiny new object. Let's do what we have been doing only double and triple our efforts if we can and when teh campaign asks us to do something, do it. Write letters, ring doorbells, make phone calls and donate.

I have to admit, they had me for awhile. I fell for it too. Then I realized their strategy, so I got off my duff and volunteered to do whatever I can until Nov. 5th. I saw that they wanted to keep Palin in the countryside to attract those voters that Obama had trouble with during the primaries. If you want to make sure that Obama wins in Nov. get off your duff and connect wiith those voters in the rural areas of this country and let them know that just because you like someone it doesn't mean they will be good for the country.

McCain's people said a few months ago that Hillary Clinton had written their playbookd. Until Clinto they had no idea how to fight Obama. We have been up against Clinton and hello, we won. Yes, we are dealing with a different animal entirely but we know this animal on some level. What do we have to look forward to? Hard hitting "Willie Horton" type ads, distortion of Obama's views and record, outright lies, and smears. We thought we saw smears, we haven't seen anything yet. Most of this stuff will happen in October. McCain put out one of the most digustng ads I have ever seen, it is offensive and racist. But, this is what McCain has brought the camoaign to. McCain is 72 and this is his last chance to reach for something greater than himself, he will do anything to win. A desperate man will eat his own foot if he believes it will save him for another day. McCain has traded his honor and his maverick status to be the Nominee. What else will he do?

Now, I know that we are a creative bunch of people and we have tons of ideas about how to best help the Obama campaign. I applaud, commend and encourage everyone to keep up the good work. But, for the love of God, CALM DOWN. Every poll that comes out that has Obama down puts everyone in a tizzy. Haven't we seen this before? Clinton anyone? The media spins things for dramatic effect. They are not our friends, yet we watch and panic. If you had a friend that slapped you in the face every Wednesday and yet every Wednesday morning you get up thinking today is going to be the day that my friend doesn't slap me, would that make any sense. No, it would not. I am not saying don't watch. By all means, do so and take them to task but don't run through the streets ripping at your hair screaming that the world is over based on a poll. Just work harder.

Palin is going to keep hitting hard. She does that. This woman is smart, calculating and manipulative. Let the Republicans do what they do, but do what Obama and team need us to do so we can win this thing and put Bush and Co. behind us as like a bad date.

So, remember people: relax, relate, release.

Is it me, or was Sarah Palin's speach tonight the most condescending, ridiculing and sarcastic performance filled with disdainful mockery that you have ever seen? I think we have a real problem if the media and Biden and Obama have to walk on eggshells around her because of her sex while she wallops them all. Where will the line be drawn now? Hillary cried wolf every time she felt that they were “mean” to her, so now this Ultra right-winger whose political career is a fraud, is going to be the pit-bull with lipstick? The democrats need to make sure that they don’t coat her with Teflon!

While some are still reading the speeches or viewing the videos of the Democratic National Convention, the campaign of John Mc Cain choose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Was Senator McCain so outdone with the Democrats he felt the urge to "one up" on images?

Did Senator McCain listen to Ted Kennendy, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and our official Democratic candidate, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, who spoke for the nation when he said 'ENOUGH!'

(President Bush were your listening)?

More than 85,000 citizens came out in support of Barack Obama. Over 37 million viewers worldwide. This movement keeps growing. Citizens truly want America back. We come in all ages, and colors of the rainbow, and saluted in unison, and celebration as Barack Obama made history.

The day of the famous "I Have A Dream,"speech, and Dr. King would have been proud.

Proud of Barack Obama.

Any person born after 1920 who is still alive, had tears in their eyes at the realization that the United States, of America-- a county that use to lynch Black men for amusement, has finally overcome fear, and bias to elect a man, not because of his color, but due to his love for country, and ability to lead a nation.

Dr. Martin Luther King was prophetic when he spoke of an America where we can be judged;

"NOT BY THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN, BUT BY THE CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER".

Senator Barack Obama's speech demonstrated this as well, COURAGE.

He reminded this writer of Ali-Foreman, and his famous chant;

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

The pundits were falling all over themselves. Pat Buchanan wore shades.

Stevie Wonder played, and the national anthem was sung by Jennifer Hudson.

The sights, sounds, the MESSAGE, and demonstration of UNITY took the Republicans off their guard.

Over 85,000 American supporters came out for Senator Barack Obama!

The Republican game isn't as tight as it sounds. They're going to need a whole new slate of commercials.

Since Barack Obama made his case to the American people, the only thing I have left is to offer a youthful vice-president. One whom I just met, never truly vetted, but if elected, this is just how I'll make decisions as commander-in-chief.

Giuliani failed to make interoperable communications between the NYC Fire and Police Departments a reality after the 1993 WTC bombing. This failure was probably responsible for several hundred deaths of our firefighters on 9/11/2001. Mayor Bloomberg has made it happen, one of the many reasons why I believe Mayor Mike is the one to hammer the Department of Homeland Security into a workable, effective, accountable government agency. Great news! Today's NYTimes reports that, not only are the Fire and Police department fully interoperable, but

"Emergency medical workers can now contact the police directly via radio. Fire officials use information beamed down from police helicopters. Law enforcement officers and emergency service agencies hold joint drills at high-rise buildings, jails and the city’s tunnels. Seven years after the harsh lessons of the Sept. 11 attacks, New York City has improved the ability of its Police and Fire Departments to operate together. On Wednesday, these and other advances were enumerated before the Federal Communications Commission at a public hearing in Brooklyn on improving public safety through better communications among government and emergency agencies.
Speakers at the hearing focused on the lack of a national broadband public safety network, noting that some cities, including New York, Washington and Philadelphia, had improved agencies’ ability to talk to one another on their local networks, while others had lagged behind. ..."

Did McCain Just Jump the Shark?

So I am curious what people think about McCain claiming on CNN he knows how to capture and bring to justice Osama bin Laden. He may have just jumped the shark if the media or people address this.

If this is "true," if there he has a plan, why hasn't bin Laden been captured - because the proof in the pudding would be that OSL is confirmed dead or is US custody (or soon will be depending on the timetable of McCain's plan).
How long has McCain known this plan/when did he come up with it? (read: what/when does he/did he know?)
What is he holding back? Why hasn't he shared it with the President, Military Leaders, colleagues in Congress - so they can put this plan in action and accomplish this critical, life-saving goal?
If he does not share this plan NOW, he has no concern for the safety and security of the American People, is outrageously negligent of his legislative duties, even his responsibility as a US or world citizen (ala “see something, say something”), and is not even worthy of being a US Senator, let alone President of the US.
Delaying it until "elected," or never sharing it because he doesn't get elected, is beyond negligent.

This is so beyond rationalizing it because he “has to say it to get elected” (that is what I hear constantly from my McCain-supporting friends and family on his voluminous list of inconsistencies). He’s screwing with our lives. Talk about someone who is more interested in winning an election than the safety and security of the American people (what he has been accusing Obama of this week)! Its the pot calling the kettle black, and then some.

From what I hear, the FISA bill allows for criminal lawsuits, much bigger fish to fry. Don't we want these criminals in criminal court? I think Senator Obama should follow Keith Olbermann's advice:

"Keep your eye on the wording of the legislation to make sure the Republicans don't realize its flaws.

Then vote for the amendment to strip telecom immunity out of the FISA bill.

Then after that fails, vote for the FISA bill, if that's your final answer.

Then the minute the president has signed the FISA bill, you announce that you voted for it because it renews FISA -- and because it permits a bigger prize than just civil suits, that it allows for criminal prosecution of past illegal eavesdropping."

There has been much concern among the Obama groups over whether Senator Obama will find a way to bail senator Clinton out of er campaign

Debts. It has been made perfectly clear that none of the money that we, his supporters, have donated to his campaign , will be used for anything other than what it was donated for. But there is a question of Barack considering fund raising to help her out. People feel very strongly that Senator Obama should not do this. I agree the thought of donating to Hillary or doing anything to persuade others to do so makes me feel rather ill. But having said that, I think that we should make our feelings, for or against, known to Senator Obama through campaign head quarters. It has also been said that any help that

The Obama team gives Hillary to raise money will be perceived as a bribe to get her out of the way. Some have also said that they feel that this will be a deal breaker between Barack and his supporters. This possibility makes it even more inparitive that HQ knows our feelings.

Emotions are running high at this time and we should take a deep breath and step back. I feel that we should not jump to any conclusions about what the final result of all of this will be. Barack Obama is and has always been a man who is a thinker, who will lookg at all sides of a question and then do his level best to make a fare decision. This is one of the main reasons that I want to see him become President. We say that we believe in him so, now is the time to really prove it.

Economists Release Letter Opposing Clinton Gas Tax Plan

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday she'll have no truck with economists telling her where to put her gas-tax holiday.

Well, now she's got a truckload of them.

More than 230 economists -- Democrats, Republicans, advisers to past presidents and four Nobel laureates -- signed a letter today opposing proposals by
Clinton and presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain to suspend the 18-cent federal gas tax for the summer driving season.

"First, research shows that waiving the gas tax would generate major profits for oil companies rather than significantly lowering prices for consumers,"
they wrote. "Second, it would encourage people to keep buying costly imported oil and do nothing to encourage conservation. Third, a tax holiday would
provide very little relief to families feeling squeezed."

Signatories include four Nobel laureates: Joseph Stiglitz (a Clinton White House adviser), James Heckman, Daniel Kahneman and Roger Myerson. Also signing
were: President-elect of the American Economic Association Angus Deaton; former AEA presidents Charles Schultze, Alice Rivlin and Peter Diamond; former
Reagan administration economist Clyde Prestowitz and former Clinton economic adviser Jeffrey Frankel. Indeed, former president Bill Clinton's administration
is well-represented on the list, with the signatures of Jeffrey Liebman of Harvard University, Rebecca Blank of the University of Michigan and J. Bradford
DeLong of the University of California, Berkeley.

Others are household names within the smaller household of the economics profession: John Shoven and Lawrence Goulder from Stanford, Alan Auerbach from
Berkeley, David Cutler from Harvard, James Galbraith from the University of Texas and Frank Levy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

My comment added to Senator Obama's statement in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day:

The word 'genocide' had to be invented to describe the enormity of the crime of the Holocaust. More than 10 million people were targeted for state-sponsored mass murder by the Nazis, including six million Jews as determined by 'racial heredity', not by religious practice. The other four+ million included Roma (gypsies), homosexuals, Slavs, communists, and many good people of Christian faith who tried to say no. I would like to remember the countries who took European Jewish refugees when no one else, including the United States, would: Sweden, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and China. I also want to honor the memories of all the righteous Christians of Europe who risked their lives to save their neighbors and friends, especially Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat in Hungary who helped tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews, and then disappeared into Soviet prison camps.

Not 'EXTRA-EXTRA-Read all about it', but "They did it to us again" was this morning's call of controlled pain of a 50-something African-American man who sells The NY Post and NY Daily News at a high foot traffic location in The Bronx. I had just heard the news of the not guilty - not guilty - not guilty - on every single charge in the Sean Bell shooting on WNYC, the New York Public radio station before going out to run some errands.

I heard the controlled pain in his low, measured, and dignified "They did it to us again". He was sitting on a bench, stunned, next to his stack of newspapers at the corner of Gun Hill and Bainbridge, sheltered by one of the massive buildings of a world-class medical center. He almost seemed to hear my "got that right" as I walked by with my feet but not my eyes, which looked to see his face.

Errands done, I walked back the same way. He was no longer calling out "They did it to us again". He was sitting a few feet from his unsold papers, in the sun, sinking into stone cold shock. I went up to him, and asked if either paper had any news about this case, knowing it would not - this news was happening in real time.

I asked if I could quote him - he wouldn't look at me - until I finally said, "not even the assault charge..."

He realized then that a white woman might understand, as improbable as that is in his world - a New York City where 50% of adult black men are unemployed. He knew I knew he was talking about Amodou Diallo, the African immigrant shot 41 times by four NYC policemen in 1999 in the Soundview section of The Bronx, when then mayor Giuliani relished dividing black and white, rich and poor. Diallo was reaching into his jacket for the identification card in his wallet in the lit entrance to his home when 41 bullets cut him down.

It doesn't matter that the Sean Bell case was different in that two of the three police officers were also black. "They did it to us again".

Well, all you talking heads who say everything is just fine in America, I challenge you to convert to Black Man in America, and see how it feels.

To his credit, Mayor Bloomberg refused to withdraw his earlier, non-expert observation that 50 bullets appeared to be excessive, and stood with Congressmen Rangel and Conyers today to call for an FBI investigation based on civil liberties violations.

It seemed like my decision to leave NYC this morning was a good one, for I cannot bear to see the anger in so many, and I hope they will channel that righteous anger into non-violent protest.

I am ashamed I didn't buy his paper, and more ashamed I was relieved to leave NYC just in case that righteous anger erupts because "They did it to us again."

What they reveal is racial hatred that still exists among some Americans who refuse to let it go.

The Secret Service needs to get information from the likes of Hannity and some of these radical conservatives who are using the cover or label of Repubican to hide their true colors.

They are "haters" from the past, and despise the progress, and success of the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama.

The mainstream press has marred itself by not doing their homework, and having reporters with the background needed to report the facts, without bias.

They've even ignored a "major story" about the cult children out West being removed due to the forced marriages between girls as young as 8 years old to men as old as 50. This mass rape in closed society to facilitate keeping "racial purity" reveals a sickness of mind, but is not considered as important a news tale, as discrediting the best presidential candidate in the Democratic party.

My concern as an American voter, is to read between the lines of bias writing, and the promotion of fear. Many of us have been eyewitnesses to the greatest grassroots movement being led by Barack Obama. We have see historic increases in voter registeration, participation, and community activism.

This is a great inspiration to many Americans who are "bitter" about the fact we have a president who turned the middle class into paupers by going to war with Iraq.

Who went on vacation when New Orleans drowned. Americans watched a elderly woman's dead body slumped in a wheelchair for TWO WEEKS BEFORE BEING REMOVED!

GEORGE BUSH WAS BUSY.

CONDI WAS BUYING SHOES!

BARBARA BUSH SAID BLACKS WERE ..."USE TO THAT"...

TALK ABOUT ELITISM!

VOTERS NEED TO BOYCOTT THE LIKES OF RUSH LIMBAUGH, SEAN HANNITY, AND OTHERS WHO REMIND ME OF THE OLD SOUTH, AND THEIR SYMOBLISM WITH WORDS.

For many of you, this journey started with Senator Obama more than a year ago when he announced his candidacy for President, right outside the steps of the old Illinois State Capitol where President Abraham Lincoln once served. For others, you joined this movement over the last few months during your state's primary or caucus. Today, the campaign continues for all of us!

We have come so far over this last year. Just one year ago, very few pundits and party regulars were willing to give Senator Obama a chance at winning the nomination. They said he had a funny name. He wasn't widely known by Democratic voters. Virtually none of the party establishment stood behind him. Senator Clinton was already determined to be the "inevitable" Democratic nominee. It was just a matter of time before he'd drop out.

But here we are on March 25, 2008...Senator Obama is leading in pledged delegates, has won double the number of states than that of Senator Clinton and leads the popular vote - in fact, he's received more votes from Democrats than anyone who's run for president in our electoral history. Hello Queens!

Many of you have been looking for ways to continue supporting Senator Obama's campaign, but have not been able to travel out of state to volunteer. Well great news - the Queens Phonebanking operation in Forest Hills is back!! The members of CWA Local 1182 have again allowed us to use their headquarters to make these all important voter identification calls.

TOMORROW is Super Tuesday! It is also, if I'm not mistaken, Mardi Gras. Here in New York, it's also the day of the ticker-tape parade for the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants!

So, it's a festive day, and there's A LOT going on tomorrow. We need to remind people that it's VERY important that they go and cast their vote in the primary election. Remind them that New York is NOT a winner-take-all state, and that we need to win as many delegates for Barack Obama as possible. He and his opponent are neck and neck in some parts of the country right now. He could even pull ahead...BUT ONLY IF PEOPLE REMEMBER TO VOTE.

CALL AND E-MAIL YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES. Give elderly and handicapped neighbors, coworkers, congregation members a ride to their polling place. Let people know, if they don't know where to vote, they can find their location on the barackobama.com website. Volunteer to do phone banking, leafletting, whatever.

Here in NYC, the polls open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 9:00 p.m. If you are waiting on a line at the polling place when the polls close, you WILL be allowed to vote.

January 26, 2008 -- COLUMBIA, SC - Bill andHillary Clinton got walloped yesterday when a photograph surfaced showing them posing with an alleged fraudster whom the former first lady had called a "slum landlord" and linked toBarack Obama in Monday's debate.

In the picture, Hillary Rodham Clinton is grinning alongside Chicago builder and Democratic moneyman Antoin "Tony" Rezko - who stands between the Clintons.

Rezko has been indicted on federal fraud charges and goes to trial next month. The charges involve an alleged scam by Rezko to extort payoffs from companies looking to do business with two state boards in Illinois.

Just days ago, Sen. Clinton slammed Obama for his connection to Rezko, after the presidential rivals got in an angry personal exchange about Republican ideas.

"I was fighting against those ideas when you were practicing law and representing your contributor, Rezko, in his slum landlord business in inner-city Chicago," Clinton fumed.

NBC revealed the photo yesterday when Clinton appeared on the "Today" show.

"I probably have taken hundreds of thousands of pictures. I don't know the man. I wouldn't know him if he walked in the door. I don't have a 17-year relationship with him," Clinton said when asked by host Matt Lauer for her explanation.

"There's a big difference between standing somewhere taking a picture with someone you don't know and haven't seen since, and having a relationship that the newspapers in Chicago have been exploring," she added.

Obama first met Rezko in 1990, when the developer offered him a job that he turned down. Rezko later emerged as one of Obama's top contributors.

The photo could date from 1997, when both Clintons attended a fund-raiser in Chicago for then-Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun.

Clinton's campaign said there is a big difference between a single photo and the $60,000 that Obama says Rezko has donated to his campaign.

As a state senator, Obama wrote letters backing Rezko's effort to get $14 million in taxpayer funds for senior-citizens housing.

The Clinton camp was surprised to get caught in a trap of their own design, since Obama is the one with long Rezko ties.

The campaign put out a memo noting that Rezko has "never contributed a dime" to Clinton.

I am both a resident and a volunteer staff member at an adult home in Queens. Many of the residents here are behind Mr. Obama but not all. As there are over 360 residents at this home, I feel that this is a significant amount of votes. I've been instrumental in making sure that people are registered and instrumental in helping them to do so. There is a general good feeling about Mr Obama and I just want to make sure that the people know enough to vote.

Yesterday may have been the biggest day for the Obama campaign since primary season began.

The Palmetto State saw what our country has endured in the past seven years, and knows the country is seemingly tumbling into recession, and that tomorrow's weather forecast is not very assuring.

The voters, who started coming in waves early Saturday saw through the Clintons' lies demeaning Obama, and knew that the country could not stand another person like that in the Oval Office.

A snowball was made by the voters from the plains of Iowa, the mountains of New Hampshire, the deserts of Nevada, and the beaches of South Carolina, and they decided to help build it.

Then it was pushed down the hill, and it rolled and rolled and rolled. When will it stop?

It won't.

It has been two weeks since the New Hampshire primary, and plenty has happened.

And not all for the better, most unfortunately.

Not only did Barack do well in Nevada, but tension has arisen in this race for the Democratic nomination. As this contest becomes more and more a two-person bout, the Clintons (now that we can not be sure which one we are going against) have proven desparate for some way to come out looking like the frontrunner.

Well, they are just hurting themselves. These smear tactics, including those emails that most probably come from Clinton supporters, must not be tolerated. The reasons why they Clintons seem like they may be in a lead is because most Americans have heard of her, her relation to Bill Clinton, and many other reasons stemming from her time as First Lady.

A true American should wonder if our president for the next few years should have employed such tactics on the way to winning the presidency. Americans are too close-minded to see through the smiles and deceivingly good plans. Every American should dissect the ideas of every candidate, before going to the polls.

If Americans were ideally understanding of the policies and abilities of each and every candidate, then and only then can the best candidate come out in all his/her glory.

A few months ago nobody gave this campaign a chance. We were told that despite all our efforts and work we would lose. The media told us that Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nominee for President. All the polls bore this out. Barack Obama was viewed as a nice guy with some good ideas but an also-ran better served by sticking it out for a few more years in the Senate and then trying again in 2012 or 2016. All this before a single poll opened or a single vote was cast.

But this movement isn't built on polls. It isn't built on what we're told will happen by the media. Its built on people. Its built on individuals coming together across the country, standing together and saying enough! Its saying that we're tired of an America where 40 million people are uninsured. We're tired of an America that isn't respected but mocked by both our enemies and allies. We're tired of an America that works only for the superrich while leaving far too many behind.

We're ready for a change. In Iowa the status-quo politicians lost and we won. We won because Iowa voters understood that Barack Obama doesn't just talk about change he's lived it. Throughout his life he's been a fighter for those left behind by society. Those who cannot speak or whose voice is drowned out. We need a President who will be a President of action and not words. We need a President we can believe in. We need a President who won't just say he'll stand up to special interests and fight for the Average American. We need Barack Obama.

Now campaigns are a funny thing. We went from the no-chancers before Iowa, to the unstoppable train after, to a "real race" after New Hampshire. Regardless of the circumstances one thing has remained consistent. That is the willingness of those involved in this campaign to continue fighting. We have a cause here. A true cause. Its this cause that has led many of us to call strangers in Iowa and New Hampshire before the votes. It is this cause that led many of to travel cross-country, sleeping on the floors of people we've never met and spent long hours campaigning in the cold, rain and snow.

We do this not just because we believe in the cause. But also because we believe in the man. We believe in Barack Obama.

We have just 10 short days until the Nevada caucuses. This race has never been more important. We know that the media seizes on every vote in order to make their pronoucements of whose ahead, whose behind, who has the momentum, who doesn't. Sure we took a little hit in New Hampshire. But ya know what? We're gonna win Nevada. And we're gonna carry that momentum through South Carolina and onto Super Tuesday. But we can't do it without help. Please everyone who can lets work double time now to keep this campaign growing. If you can contribute any amount please do. Don't think that because you can't afford much that your contribution isn't valuable. Even $5 or $10 dollars can make a difference. If not then sign up and phone bank. Call voters directly and tell them why you're supporting Barack Obama and they should as well. If you have a flair for adventure take the trip to Nevada or South Carolina and talk to voters.

Remember, every little bit helps and every little bit helps us draw closer to electing Barack Obama President. Every little bit builds the hope.

The New Hampshire Debates

I'm certain most of us who saw Senator Obama stand his ground last evening in the NH debates observed more than a few things.

First, his Iowa speech about unification affected even the moderator. He asked the Republicans to greet the Democratic Party candidates. Something we've never seen.

Secondly, the way other candidates are now seizing the word "change." Especially the former first lady, who toots about experience, refers to Senator Obama as a novice, yet for 35 years NOTHING HAS CHANGED! We've seen genocide in Rwanda under the Clinton watch. We have genocide in Darfur under Bush's watch. NOTHING HAS CHANGED!

Third, how Senator Clinton stated Senator Obama is giving 'false hopes" in his speeches, and the attacks on Mr. Obama as a hope monger,and someone who appeals only to the youth. We see all ages, colors, and races in the background, and foreground at Obama rallies, and primaries. This is a great sign that results of the grassroots movement are beginning to reveal the results of the hard work of Obama volunteers.

Barack Obama's Iowa speech was not only inspirational,but undeniable evidence of his oratorical skills.There is no comparison to the current president's lack of articulation. I can't recall the last time a sitting president was the subject of so many late night jokes.

I live in South Jamaica,Queens,and the Senator from New York has NEVER visited my neighborhood, she has not spoken out against RACIAL INJUSTICE such as the NYPD shooting of Sean Bell.

She has said nothing about Suffolk County's current case where protestors said charges should be dismissed against John White--- found guilty after a group of white teens invaded his home, and one teen was fatally shot.

Or was New York just her stepping stone state to the White House? I don't believe Al Sharpton should be left holding this bag (for racial injustice), when we elected representatives to protect us?

She's running for president and assumes she has the vote of all Black Americans, but one question no one asked is--What have you done for Black New Yorkers, or for the depressing situation that still exists between the police department and minorities, and how would you address them?

What about the drug problem in Queens, what have you done to stem that? What about the children in these second rate public schools? Queens has it's own brand of Soweto (poor and black), and Johannesburg (rich and white) and the racism being practiced against minority teachers as well as the children?

Why doesn't she challenged both the Chancellor and the Mayor on why when principals are incompetent and white, they get promoted, and if they are black they are presumed guilty, and fired?

This is happening NOW under their watch. We need a flood of civil rights attorneys to fight the war behind wage now in institutional racism situations, and the best-kept secret in town is the micro-management and abuse of human rights in the workplaces of hundreds of public schools in New York City.

What has the senator from New York done for us lately? What is she doing about this?

Nothing. That's why we believe, if you use people to get to the top, along the way, you are going to see these folks on the decline because the people who elected her to the Senate have not seen their lives get any better. In fact, the stress has gotten worse.

Those of us who have seen thousands in crowds from Brooklyn to Harlem, from the Apollo theatre to Iowa, and now New Hampshire-- see young, and old, Black, white, Indian, Asian, Independents, Republicans, and know this alone, is history in the making.

We want a united America, and this moment in history is one propelling us forward to elect Barack Obama as the true agent of change, and a movement only getting stronger.

Early last evening, we all witnessed history in the making. Many of us are still celebrating this first hurdle, and America has witnessed a new spirit. Barack Obama has ignited this nation. You can't really believe the polls in the end, (some placing him third), because it was the impact of the people's vote. We want change, are thirsting for it, and no one else has the credentials for this new movement, the passion for true leadership, and who is making his mark on the American Dream as Senator Obama is doing. None who has heard him speak, is surprised. We feel this is the time for all Americans to come together to rid this nation of the ills that continue to divide us, and to appreciate that fact that this could only happen in America, an America, that once, and for all, can see the real issues, and select the candidate who is not only the most qualified, but who uplifts the spritis of people, who is making them hopeful once again, that America can solve her problems, and regain status as a great nation. We are making the changes necessary in our system to replace fear with a new vision for all. On to New Hampshire, South Carollina, and ultimately, Washington, D.C.!

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Two black South Carolina ministers listed by Barack Obama as supporters of his campaign say they never endorsed the Illinois senator, while at least two others say they affirmed their support only after being contacted by the campaign when questions were raised over their endorsements.

Hillary Clinton, too, has stumbled when it comes to claiming the support of the clergy. And with just over a week to go until Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses, the questions over endorsements coincide with gambits by the two frontrunning Democrats to pick off each other’s supporters and win them over to their sides.

The moves suggest that every endorsement, however low-key, counts — but the enthusiastic head-counting has had its drawbacks.

Earlier this month, Obama’s campaign released a list of what it said were nearly 130 senior pastors in South Carolina endorsing his run for the Democratic nomination. When contacted by The Associated Press, several ministers said they have yet to decide who will get their vote and were unclear how they ended up on the Illinois senator’s list.

“I really haven’t decided to endorse him yet. I was thinking about it,” said the Rev. Clifford Gaymon of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in rural Clarendon County.

An Obama spokeswoman said the list was created after campaign organizers called ministers and asked to release their names publicly. “We used all our resources to ensure we had the most accurate and up-to-date list, and we worked to check with everyone on the list,” said South Carolina spokeswoman Amaya Smith. “It’s a pretty long list of people.”

But some ministers said their names were used without their permission. Gaymon, mistakenly listed as retired on the Obama list, said he’s been to campaign events to find out more about the presidential candidate, but did not receive a phone call about making an endorsement.

The Rev. Michael Blue of Door of Hope Christian Church in Marion was added to the list without permission and has asked the Obama campaign to take his name off the list, said church spokesman Ronnie Green.

Clinton ran into some of the same questions after her campaign released its list of endorsements from black ministers late last month.

Blacks compose nearly half the Democratic primary vote in South Carolina, and the candidates are looking for an edge with the critical voting bloc.

The majority of people endorsing each candidate was accurate, according to the AP reviews, and many supporters said they are eager to lend a hand.

Both campaigns lists’ had some sloppy record keeping: misspelled names, churches listed in incorrect cities and beside incorrect names. But, like Clinton’s list, Obama has some other substantial inconsistencies.

When Obama’s campaign released its list of ministers Dec. 4, it said everyone on it was a senior pastor, unless otherwise noted. That meant there were 122 senior pastors and three associate pastors of different churches and ministries, including four retirees.

Before supplying a second list to the AP a day later, the campaign withdrew two names and added one, and noted a fourth associate pastor. The AP review found at least two more associate pastors and a youth pastor’s assistant.

The Clinton and Obama campaigns also got into an endorsement spat Wednesday, with each claiming to have converted a former supporter of the other.

Clinton’s campaign spotlighted Iowa ironworker and former Obama labor steering committee member Bob McFadden, announcing Wednesday that he has switched his support to Clinton.

“Hillary Clinton won’t just talk the talk — she cares about the issues important to all of us and will work to change the direction of our country,” McFadden said in a Clinton campaign statement.

Obama countered, announcing that Army veteran Kent Sovern, formerly the Iowa co-chairman for Clinton’s Veterans Committee, has defected to caucus for Obama.

Clinton and Obama got into another sparring match over the weekend over who can lay claim to the backing of members of the Bill Clinton administration.

My Response

So a couple of ministers said their names were not supposed to be on the list. That’s news? That’s reactionary.

I have yet to write about the fact Black Americans are entitled to have different points of view, depending on roots, knowledge of history, and one’s own unique experience living in America.

However, not because of race, but due to his substance, and the fact he is best qualified, those two ministers should get on board, as Chris Rock humorously stated at the Apollo.

If America wants to change her image, and only if Americans have truly matured, then the American people will elect Barack Obama as president of the United States.

When Obama wins, everybody’s true colors will be revealed.

Our next president should be qualified, intelligent, a person of character, good common sense, and a grassroots organizer who gets things done.

What has Hillary done for New York? (Besides use us as a stepping stone to her ambitions?)

Why doesn't she speak out on the racial injustices such as the execution style shooting of SEAN BELL, and the recent verdict against Mr. White for shooting a teen who invaded his home to fight?

We still have a two-tier system of racial injustice, and Clinton has NOT cited the back-door way in which Bush has destroyed the Bill of Rights, and the Civil Rights acts, while smiling in our faces.

Where is the outrage from Hillary? Mrs. Clinton avoids touching racial problems, -- she has not lived them, nor does she seem interested in being around the common Black person on the street—only wealthy folks (unlike Oprah) who have turned their backs on the less fortunate in this city, and promised her the ‘pauper’s vote.”

When I wrote to Mrs. Clinton about problems within the educational structure of this city, the violence, the corruption, the racism against veterans educators of color, her response was a form letter, but no action.

Remember when everyone asked Hillary if she were running for president, and she either denied, smiled, but never quite answered the question? Yet she has the arrogance to cite Barrack’s kindergarten work? He was not supposed to dream?

I see a woman who feels entitled. She is not. The American people want the best qualified. Mrs. Clinton's experience is limited to the fact she was First Lady, and as the Times reported, she did not have security clearance.

We need to break free from the Clintons, and the Bushes. Voting for Barack Obama is something Americans need to do to ensure we have a different, more constructive future; it would prove we are no longer a country governed by fear, race, or religion.

The ignorant need to read more about the issues, and Obama’s experience, and accomplishments in the Illinois State Senate, and in the Senate of the United States Congress.

The proof is before us, Barack Obama is a conciliatory statesman who wants to lead, and serve ALL AMERICANS. He is not a self-serving advocate of himself. Barack is capable of leading this nation; he only asks that we each do our share to change it,

John Edwards and his "fight" against Poverty

John Edwards ended 2004 with a problem: how to keep alive his public profile without the benefit of a presidential campaign that could finance his travels and pay for his political staff.

Mr. Edwards, who reported this year that he had assets of nearly $30 million, came up with a novel solution, creating a nonprofit organization with the stated mission of fighting poverty. The organization, the Center for Promise and Opportunity, raised $1.3 million in 2005, and — unlike a sister charity he created to raise scholarship money for poor students — the main beneficiary of the center’s fund-raising was Mr. Edwards himself, tax filings show.

A spokesman for Mr. Edwards defended the center yesterday as a legitimate tool against poverty.

The organization became a big part of a shadow political apparatus for Mr. Edwards after his defeat as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004 and before the start of his presidential bid this time around. Its officers were members of his political staff, and it helped pay for his nearly constant travel, including to early primary states.

While Mr. Edwards said the organization’s purpose was “making the eradication of poverty the cause of this generation,” its federal filings say it financed “retreats and seminars” with foreign policy experts on Iraq and national security issues. Unlike the scholarship charity, donations to it were not tax deductible, and, significantly, it did not have to disclose its donors — as political action committees and other political fund-raising vehicles do — and there were no limits on the size of individual donations.

Mr. Edwards, a former North Carolina senator, set out to keep his political options open by promoting issues he cared about, like poverty.

“He wanted to learn, travel and be in a position to be a viable candidate,” said J. Edwin Turlington, a Raleigh lawyer who was the manager of Mr. Edward’s 2003 presidential exploratory committee. “He had the ability to raise money to fund his activities. He had a vision, and he knew it would take money.”

Mr. Edwards mixed policy and politics in a way that allowed his supporters to donate to the causes he believed in — and to the organizations he had set up. He also set up two political action committees, something commonly done by politicians thinking of running for president.

But it was his use of a tax-exempt organization to finance his travel and employ people connected to his past and current campaigns that went beyond what most other prospective candidates have done before pursuing national office. And according to experts on nonprofit foundations, Mr. Edwards pushed at the boundaries of how far such organizations can venture into the political realm. Such entities, which are regulated under Section 501C-4 of the tax code, can engage in advocacy but cannot make partisan political activities their primary purpose without risking loss of their tax-exempt status.

Because the organization is not required to disclose its donors — and the campaign declined to do so — it is not clear whether those who gave money to it did so understanding that they were supporting Mr. Edwards’s political viability as much or more than they were giving money to combat poverty.

The money paid Mr. Edwards’s expenses while he walked picket lines and met with Wall Street executives. He gave speeches, hired consultants, attacked the Bush administration and developed an online following. He led minimum-wage initiatives in five states, went frequently to Iowa, and appeared on television programs. He traveled to China, India, Brussels, Uganda and Russia, and met with Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain and his likely successor, Gordon Brown, at 10 Downing Street.

“He was not a U.S. senator; he had no office,” said Ferrel Guillory, a political program director at the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. “So he set up a series of entities to finance his travel, to finance a political shop and to finance an issue shop. It all adds up to a remarkable feat of keeping a presidential candidacy alive without any of the traditional bases for it.”

Mr. Edwards depended for his activities in large part on donations from supporters. In addition to the two nonprofit organizations, he created a leadership political action committee and a 527 “soft money” organization that also shared the same name: the OneAmerica Committee. These two committees each allowed donors to give more than the $2,300 per person limit in a presidential primary or general election, and, in some cases, to give in unlimited amounts.

From 2005, when he established them, through 2006, the committee and the soft money organization raised $2.7 million, most of which paid for travel and other activities that helped Mr. Edwards maintain his profile.

“It’s a permanent campaign,” said Meredith McGehee, policy director at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit group based in Washington. “It’s about shaking every money tree possible and finding every means to finance a permanent campaign. It’s like having different checking accounts, with different rules, and the goal of keeping your name and agenda in the public eye.”

The two foundations and the two political committees all shared an address in Washington and jointly raised around $4 million. Most donations to the political committees came from his core supporters, trial lawyers and unions, and in one case from Oak Spring Farms LLC, which gave $250,000. Many donations ranged from less than $10,000 to $50,000. For example, Boyd Tinsley, the violinist and backup singer for the Dave Matthews Band, gave $50,000, as did the Service Employees International Union, whose organizing efforts Mr. Edwards has supported.

The Edwards campaign defended the activities of the nonprofit.

“One of the Center for Promise and Opportunity’s main goals was to raise awareness about poverty and engage people to fight it,” Jonathan Prince, deputy campaign manager, said yesterday. “Of course, it sent Senator Edwards around the country to do this. How else could we have engaged tens of thousands of college students or sent 700 young people to help rebuild New Orleans? It’s patently absurd to suggest there’s anything wrong with an organization designed to raise awareness about poverty actually working to raise awareness about poverty.”

“Of course, some of the people who worked for Senator Edwards in the government and on his campaign continued to work with him to fight poverty and send young people to college,” he added. “Perish the thought: people involved in politics actually trying to improve peoples’ lives.”

Mr. Edwards also developed mutually beneficial relationships with public and private institutions. He founded the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina, which provided him with a platform. In return, he raised $3 million to sustain it. He was hired by the Fortress Investment Group, a New York hedge fund, to “develop investment opportunities,” according to a 2005 Fortress news release. That led to meetings with such people as Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany; Henry Kravis, founder of KKR, one of Wall Street’s most successful investment funds; and the chief executives of General Electric, Citigroup, Coca-Cola and DaimlerChrysler.

“Fortress became a vehicle for foreign travel,” Mr. Turlington said, “but it was also a way to spend more time with sophisticated financial people.”

The Edwards campaign declined to disclose the amounts raised or spent by the two similarly-named nonprofit agencies — the Center for Promise and Opportunity and the Center for Promise and Opportunity Foundation — since their 2005 tax filings, which are the most recent to have been filed.

The Center for Promise and Opportunity Foundation, which started with $70,000 in 2005, gave out $300,000 in college scholarships in 2006, said Pamela Garland, the executive director of the College for Everyone Program that is part of the foundation. The center, often praised for helping poor students in Greene County, N.C., get into college, is on track to give out $476,000 this year, Ms. Garland said.

Mr. Edwards broke his ties to that charity once he announced his candidacy for president. “It’s really just me now,” said Ms. Garland, who began her job last May. She credited Mr. Edwards with devising the program, raising the money and speaking to high school students, using his own up-from-poverty story to inspire them.

At the same time, the larger nonprofit group had a more politically active agenda. Its directors included Mr. Turlington, the Raleigh lawyer; Miles Lackey, Mr. Edwards’s former chief of staff; Alexis Bar, his former political scheduler; and David Ginsberg, currently a senior adviser for communications.

The $1.3 million the group raised and spent in 2005 paid for travel, including Mr. Edwards’s “Opportunity Rocks” tour of 10 college campuses, consultants and a Web operation. In addition, some $540,000 went for the “exploration of new ideas,” according to tax filings.

Nonprofit groups can engage in political activities and not endanger their tax-exempt status so long as those activities are not its primary purpose. But the line between a bona fide charity and a political campaign is often fuzzy, said Marcus S. Owens, a Washington lawyer who headed the Internal Revenue Service division that oversees nonprofit agencies.

“I can’t say that what Mr. Edwards did was wrong,” Mr. Owens said. “But he was working right up to the line. Who knows whether he stepped or stumbled over it. But he was close enough that if a wind was blowing hard, he’d fall over it.”

Of the explicitly political entities, Mr. Edwards’ OneAmerica Committee 527 organization allowed donors to give without limitations. The money was transferred to his leadership political action committee. Leadership committees were initially created to allow prominent politicians to raise money for distribution to needy office-seekers. But Mr. Edwards spent the entire $2.7 million he raised for OneAmerica, including $532,000 raised by the 527, on himself, an increasingly common trend among politicians.

A front-page article last Friday about nonprofit organizations created by John Edwards that helped keep his political profile alive after the 2004 election referred imprecisely to a donation made to an Edwards campaign committee. Although an individual donor was not identified, the donation was credited to Oak Spring Farms LLC, which listed a New York hotel as its address. The donation was not “anonymous.” The article also misstated the title of one of Mr. Edwards’s campaign advisers. David Ginsberg is a senior adviser for communications; he is not the campaign’s deputy campaign manager, a post currently held by Jonathan Prince.

December 14, 2007 -- SOUND familiar? A young, charismatic candidate campaigns calling for change and new directions. Defying the traditional prejudices that have kept his ilk out of the White House, his effortless good looks and measured cadence attract voters to his vision of new possibilities.

Opposing him is a time-tested political figure capitalizing on his role in a popular eight-year administration and campaigning on the theme of experience and deriding the opponent as unqualified and naive.

In 1960 the challenger was John Kennedy and the time-tested candidate was Richard Nixon, whose slogan was "experience counts." Now it's Obama vs. Clinton, but the paradigm is the same.

The decision that Hillary should run as the candidate of experience was an enormous blunder. In a Democratic electorate that's in the party precisely because it so intensely dislikes things as they are and wants change, experience is the wrong virtue to stress.

Democrats back insurgency and political insurrection - but Hillary offers them only a synthetic and imagined incumbency. She has ceded the field of change to her rivals and sequestered herself with those pining for the 1990s, like fans at an old-timers day baseball game.

To voters who want change, she offers only nostalgia.

Hillary and her helpers were doubtless drawn to the theme of experience to set up the negatives they planned to throw at Obama. But it was inside-out logic. Knowing that they'd soon attack Obama's inexperience, the Clinton campaign decided to emphasize Hillary's supposed experience. By stressing her experience, they surely felt, they could attack Obama without seeming to do so. But this put the "negative" cart before the "positive" horse - that is, it gave them an attack plan at the cost of locking them into a lame identity for Hillary.

By stressing experience, Hillary is basing her campaign on a fraud. Like her Senate race, which was premised on the obvious lie that she wanted to be a New Yorker, her presidential race is rooted in the fabrication that she was the principal actress in her husband's presidency.

In fact, she was an observer (a close-up one, to be sure); at most a kibitzer, sending in advice from time to time but surely not a principal.

Yes, she had actual line responsibility, in the first two years of his presidency - a time of dismal failure. But her role from late 1995 to 1997 was scarcely more than a traditional first lady's: She toured the country, wrote books, cut ribbons and traveled the world.

Even her return to a role of power - when the Lewinsky scandal all but closed down the Clinton presidency at the start of 1998 - was only in the realm of damage control, not as a formulator of public policy. Then, the final year of Bill's tenure saw her absorbed in her own Senate campaign, no longer much interested in 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., except as a springboard.

But now her candidacy's focus on "experience" has backed Hillary into a campaign of dissembling to reinvent her White House role - a series of ever-grander boasts that more and more defy credibility: First, she was at her husband's side as he balanced the budget. Then, she became a principal architect of his economic policies, the secret catalyst of the Irish peace process and the face of the administration's foreign policy.

All this posturing not only makes her look fake - but weaker by the day, too: Why is this strong woman hiding behind her husband's record, rather than focusing on her own?

All this artifice accomplishes is to win control of the rearview mirror in an election where voters want to look out of the windshield. She's now positioned in the wrong place in the wrong primary. It's Republicans who vote for experience - Democrats vote for change.

Bill Clinton is now running around Iowa trying to sell Hillary as the "agent of change," but he is fighting against the long-term theme of her campaign in making Hillary the candidate of experience. And how can a former president, whose very presence is identified with a bygone era, convince us that his wife is now the candidate of the new age?

What genius thought up this strategy?

On Thursday November 29, 2007 we were listening to Senator Barack Obama onstage at the Apollo Theatre. He spoke to an impressively mixed audience; it was a rainbow of colors, ages, ethnic backgrounds, basically what makes up America.

We saw famous faces, controversial faces, all there to listen to Senator Obama. Of course, we were treated to music, words of wisdom from professor Cornel West, the comedy of Chris Rock, who introduced the senator, and made us all very proud. This was truly a historic moment. I looked around and the entire theatre was filled, and SRO. Harlem embraced him, and the senator answered the call. Ever since the Afro-American Day Parade when several women asked;

"When is the candidate going to visit us?

Now. Obama was here, generating both excitement, and hope!

The Apollo, a place where I've seen the likes of everyone from Bob Marley, to the Jackson 5, to South Jamaica Queens' Lost Boyz, where so many artists got their start, we saw the making of movement, an agent of change, and a memorable moment in American history.

It hurts when I see all the negativity towards Barack just because people assume that he is Muslim.

I wish that folks would understand that Barack's ties to Islam in terms of his family's heritage is an asset, not should not be a distraction in this race for the presidency.

His upbringing in Indonesia, and his ties to Kenya are invaluable insights into the world as it is.

How can you envision a better solution when you have no frame of reference to go by?

I truly believe that his emphasis on partnership not division, his appreciation of diverse cultures, and his global sensitivity will be key in enlisting allies in this war on terror.

I have a very personal tie to this issue.

I made a film about the post 9/11 backlash against Muslims in America, focusing on the experiences of three Muslim teenagers called Whose Children Are These? www.whosechildrenarethese.com.

In short, as a result of a failed, poorly constructed domestic national security measure called 'Special Registration'--83,000 innocent Muslim men registered with the US Government, 14, 000 were deported and 0 were charged with terrorist related offenses.

The policy was put into effect by then Attorney General John Ashcroft and the newly created Department of Homeland Security. It has done nothing to make our country safer, and has antagonized Muslim nations all over the globe. Barack understands how important it is to fix this 'us against them' mentality, and bring Muslim communities into this fight against Al Qaeda.

This happened five years ago, and I am very disheartened by just how little progress has been made in mainstream America in terms of tolerance and the blatant disregard for civil liberties in this country.

All this talk about Barack being Muslim and being seen is in a negative light is so demeaning. The majority of Muslims around the world have nothing to do with extremist factions like Al Qaeda. To make that correlation is like saying all Christians (of which I am one) believed in and supported Timothy McVeigh and the bombing in Oklahoma City.

Sorry for the rant, but people have to understand that Barack's global perspective, his understanding that America is a partner in our world, his respect for other cultures and his pride in his diverse heritage are what will restore this country's stature in the global community.

To go back to what we know in terms of fear driven politics will do nothing but worsen important ties to nations that would be strong allies in this fight against Al Qaeda.

I don't want to see this happen.

I don't want to see us go down a path that will make us even more unsafe.

When you have seen what I have seen in terms of the devastation caused by ignorance, misunderstanding and fear, supporting Barack Obama is a necessity.

We need Barack. More than ever, our time is now.

Obama's Oprah event moves to stadium as demand soars

December 6, 2007 WASHINGTON

Demand for tickets to see Oprah Winfrey appear with White House hopeful Barack Obama in South Carolina on Sunday is so high the campaign moved the event to an 80,250-seat football stadium.

The Obama team is doing away with tickets because of the strong demand and switching the event to the home of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. This was the biggest venue the campaign could find in Columbia.

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said, "We don't expect to fill the stadium, but we want to accommodate the thousands of South Carolinians who expressed interest in attending."

Winfrey, with Barack and Michelle Obama, will start a two-day campaign swing in Iowa on Saturday with events in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. After the South Carolina rally, they will head to Manchester, N.H.

Hi..Everyone!!

I attended the Apollo Event today and it was awesome! There were a lot of people lined up almost 4 long blocks. It was inspiring to see so many people of all nationalities, lined up for over 1 hr just to see Obama give his speech. Once seated there was a really nice gospel group singing and a solo jazz female artist, who was magnificent in using her violin. Oh.and guess who was also there? Chris Rock!! He was so funny in his speech that he made us laugh so hard. But who really stole the show.. as expected, was Obama. He was articulate and inspiring in his speech. He said among other things, that he knows that he faces a journey in his quest in becoming the next President, but that he cant wait for 4 more years to pass him by, while children are left behind because of their lack of education or seeing young men hanging out in the corners of Chicago and L.A., when they should be working. Obama spoke of the hopelessness of our young youths and how he wants to give them hope, and to the American people--for a better future, which consists of no wars, better education for our children and raising the wages every year instead of every 10 yrs., etc.

Finally, Obama proved once again, to be on point and consistent in his reasons as to why he's running for President. He has big plans for this nation and has promised major changes. Obama knows exactly what the People wants. I support Obama's quest in becoming the next President of the United States. God Bless him and God Bless America!!

SE Queens Wake-Up!

Queens is for Barack Obama, especially South Jamaica, and the areas of St. Albans, Cambria Heights, Rosedale, etc. As people learn more about Senator Obama they're getting off the fence, and making a change in their view of the candidates. During the petition drive, we've met people afraid to let others know they're voting for Barack. Or who think he can't win, or that his life is endangered, and they fear for him. Or, they don't want to deal with "backlash" of the opposition.

I find this interesting as I grew up during the Civil Rights era, and remember when they killed three civil rights workers in Mississippi; when Medgar Evers was shot, when Dr. King was killed. They all fought for our right to vote. Since then, I believe in voting intelligently. Don't vote for someone because they're a specific gender, or race. Learn what candidates are about, and make intelligent choices.

We have more respect for someone who went into the streets of his neighborhood(such as Senator Obama), and organized voters. We have more respect for someone who can admit their mistakes, and is willing to answer tough questions, than someone who brags repeatedly about what they did one day (9/11), and whose judgement should be called into SERIOUS question when your nominee for Homeland Security is no better than a common thug. Imagine that...
In Jamaica, Queens in particular, rogue cops angry at the Sean Bell case are stopping, frisking, and harassing young Black men to this day.
One of my nephews with Sickle Cell disease driving to a local pharmacy was stopped, harassed, and robbed of his $50.00 for his medication by one of the police officers. This little incident never made the news because the young people are too afraid to speak, take names and badge numbers, and that's okay with some of Hillary's (Black),bougousie because they feel the poor are beneath them.
However, young folks who saw Barack Obama on BET a couple of weeks ago were impressed, and signed up to vote. We encouraged the nephew by informing him of his rights,(with the police). He has since signed the petition, and is a newly registered Democrat, but he also filed a complaint with the NYPD's Internal Affairs. We're suffering from inferior education, lack of equity in schools, harassement, neglect of our young, lack of job training, but we realized everybody must do their part.
So, SE Queens, that means all of us. WAKE UP! Wake-Up and realize Barack Obama is honest, intelligent, speaks the truth, and the time is NOW to elect someone of his character, courage, and charisma, as our element of change. He can do this, or as the campaign says, WE CAN DO THIS!

It is clear that just as voters are becoming more engaged in the campaign in the early primary states that Senator Clinton and her campaign have abandoned the politics of “let’s have a conversation,” in favor of purely tactical posturing.

Questioning and challenging what principles, if any, each candidate is standing on when they take a position or change that position is the normal part of the political process. Our campaign regularly fields questions on significant policy issues, even as we did when Hillary Clinton attacked Barack by calling him naïve and irresponsible for a position which she has agreed with him on 2 of the 3 occasions she has addressed it.

Our campaign will continue to speak openly and honestly about the challenges facing Americans and on our nation on issues as vital as Social Security, torture and international diplomacy and Barack Obama will continue tell Americans not just what they want to hear, but he believes they need to hear as well. Granted, we can see why she and her campaign might continue to get irritated by tough questions about her changing positions – they must be very tough to answer.

On Social Security, Clinton had been saying that nothing was on the table in terms of how to repair and strengthen Social Security. But in a conversation with a voter that the AP overheard, it appears to be clear that raising taxes is on the table in a very real way. [AP, 10/11/07]

When it comes to diplomacy, Clinton moved from thinking it “irresponsible and, frankly, naïve” for a president to offer a meeting with someone we don’t agree with to saying: “Here’s what I would do as president: I would engage in negotiations with Iran, with no conditions.” In all fairness, that was the position she seemed to have before launching her attack on Obama for his commonsense policy of not fearing meetings with anyone. On her torture position, first she was for some forms of torture then she opposed all forms, then she refused to tell the Washington Post whether the administration’s policy was one she would continue. And then, of course, she did hedge her bet on the pledge she made to the early primary states. It hasn’t been exactly popular in the states with early contests for Clinton to break her word to them. [DiStaso column, Union Leader, 10/10/07]

And, in response to some of the rather breathless political assertions in their memo today, we would make the following points

· In the one state where the race is engaged, Iowa, the last four public polls show a race within the margin of error between Obama and Clinton, with Edwards in third. This is not because it’s the one state in the union immune to Senator Clinton’s appeal. It is because the voters are paying close attention, they know the most about Barack Obama and are responding to his message. As other early states get more engaged, we will see a much closer race.

· We just started advertising in New Hampshire two weeks ago. Even before that, Obama has a solid vote foundation of 20%. We will build on that in the coming weeks thru additional advertising and candidate visits, like the trip this week where Barack unveiled his energy plan.

· South Carolina is a very close two way contest between Obama and Clinton already. We have a solid base and will expand on that as the election draws nearer.

· We have the strongest precinct organization in Nevada, which will be paramount. Organization will win the Nevada caucus. There is no existing list of prior caucus goers at the precinct level and turnout estimates vary wildly.

Senator Clinton in all these states is the quasi-incumbent. In Iowa, where the race is most developed, over 70% of the electorate is not choosing her, producing a dangerously low ceiling.

And let’s be clear: Hillary Clinton must win every contest. They forcefulness with which they embrace the aura of inevitability will make it shatter if she does not win in every single state. Inevitability does not come with state exceptions. Early setbacks will fundamentally alter the race, especially given our campaign’s financial and organizational strength that will allow us to capitalize fully on early momentum on February 5, where we already have much more developed campaign organizations than the Clinton campaign.

The Clinton operation is the greatest money machine in the history of American politics. The fact that Barack Obama, who has been on the national scene only briefly and who had no national fundraising network in place, has outraised Clinton by $12 million dollars this year and has a huge lead in the number of donors speaks to the hunger for change and an alternative to the frontrunner.

So, while the Clinton campaign attempts to duck legitimate questions on their way to their believed coronation, we will stay focused on telling the American people not just what they want to hear but what the need to hear, continue to build a grassroots movement for change and stay focused on measuring our progress in the early states, the only barometer that matters right now.

If a speech is made in the Senate, does anybody hear?

Interesting... I've been seeing a good deal of "outrage" over Obama skipping the vote on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment. It seems similar to the "outrage" about his having skipped the Move-on/Betrayus vote.

It's worth noting a couple things:

On "Betrayus" -- which is barely worth mention -- I did a bit of informal polling of Move-on stalwarts at their S-Chip rally. None of them, not even the one Clinton supporter, saw Obama's missed vote as a significant issue, nor were they particularly grateful that Clinton had 'adopted' them (as a platform for attack on Obama?).

On the Kyl-Lieberman amdendment

A) the 'outrage' is delayed by two weeks -- there was very little comment at the time. (September 26, the day before the New York City Rally) It is a (relatively) fair parry to Obama's escalating attacks on the Senate establishment (at 76-22, the blame is not all on Hillary) for agreeing the amendment.

B) except both the K-L and the Betrayus resolutions were non-binding -- not only would Obama's vote done little, but the resolutions themselves were simply venues to speechify (bloviate?).

C) On a non-binding resolution, does a Senator need to vote in order to go on record? It seems to me that Obama's views on both issue were clear and clearly expressed. Frankly, they were better expressed outside the Senate echo-chamber for a running presidential candidate Washington Square Park provides a better 'bully pulpit' than Washington D.C.

To be certain, I will be begin to be concerned when Obama misses binding, substantive (and contested) votes in order to campaign. But I doubt we should allow faux (fox?) outrage over these missed votes to distract from the point he is making.

Frankly, the legislature has been compiling a pretty miserable record for living up to its responsibilities. (Vis the most recent toothless growling against Turkey about the Armenian genocide). I wish a brilliant young senator could have more effect in the those hallowed chambers... Sadly, I'm pessimistic.

As the income gap between rich and poor New Yorkers widens, so do disparities in health problems, especially when it comes to chronic illnesses, like asthma, diabetes and heart disease, a new report finds.
   Over the last 15 years, the number of Queens residents hospitalized for chronic illnesses has escalated in low-income areas at a rate much higher than in the city’s more affluent communities, according to the study by Comptroller William Thompson Jr.    For instance, according to the report’s data covering the period between 1990 to 2005, diabetes rates soared in all but the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods, with all of New York City showing an 83 percent increase in hospitalizations for the illness.
   Hardest hit by diabetes deaths were the Rockaways — an area with an especially large population of low-income seniors in assisted living situations — which saw a jaw-dropping 345-percent increase in diabetes deaths between 1990 and 2005.
   Such dramatic local surges have driven a citywide rise in diabetes mortality rates that, again, are being felt most acutely in the poorest areas. In 2005, for instance, there were, on average, 125.2 diabetes deaths per 100,000 people in the poorest communities studied by the comptroller, but just 14.8 deaths in the richest areas.
   “In each year from 2000 to 2005, the diabetes hospitalization rate in low-income neighborhoods was higher than the year before,” Thompson said, adding that the trend “does not appear to be abating.”
   Childhood asthma is also a lingering concern for some health officials. While showing a promising downturn throughout much of New York City, including some poor communities, the illness has yet to abate in many other areas. In fact, between 1995 and 2005, the childhood asthma rate actually rose slightly in Ridgewood and Rockaway.
   Exacerbating these so-called “health-wealth gaps” has been a lack of access to primary care, Thompson asserted. Poorer residents who have difficulty finding a local clinic often fail to get regular check-ups. As a result, treatable health conditions, when routinely overlooked, end up snowballing into costly, life-threatening emergencies.
   As evidence, the comptroller cited a troubling scarcity of doctors in Southeast Queens — which, in 2004, had one of the city’s highest mortality rates for heart disease and cancer. The same year, it also posted one of the lowest populations of primary care physicians: on average, fewer than 50 doctors per 100,000 people.
   Worse yet, Thompson believes long wait lines at the borough’s largest medical facilities have only discouraged poorer residents who actively seek primary care outside of their own community.
   To combat the problem, he urged state health officials to boost reimbursements to doctors who serve poor residents, while opening more community health clinics. New York City drugstores, he added, could pick up the slack for overburdened primary care sites by opening more of their own walk-in health clinics.
   While acknowledging a need to expand primary care access, Celina DeLeon, a spokeswoman for the city’s Health Department, contended that “clinics in drugstores and big box stores are no replacement for an effective primary care system.”

Hillary's divisiveness

It seems worth emphasizing why Hillary would be a poor choice for the next four years.

Hillary is not polarizing because of her political positions. She is polarizing because she has no moral compass and cannot be trusted.

One example: Gore worked with the Clintons and they let him swing in the wind. He vouched for Clinton in the Lewinsky scandal, then turned around to find Clinton confessing.

These kind of betrayals are not forgotten in Washington -- it is unlikely that Clinton will be able to build partisan support simply because Republicans (and Democrats, for that matter) know that she's a fickle friend.

If you did ask that... The reason is because we have no place on any Obama group or page to store files for redistribution. I have created a PDF of the Delegate rules for New York State and stored it in the files section. Also their is no semi-static place to store important links to outside resources. This group has a links section that is very organize-able. When we post a link in a blog, it gets lost over time as new blogs post. It also has a database, and polls section which could be used to store the name and number of the senior organizer in your district, or the named and accepted delegate for each district.

All these features will make us more effective. The rest of the many features on that group will not. If you are a serious volunteer I urge you to try the group. I tried to make as many features available as I could without you needing a Yahoo! ID, but some may require you to sign in on Yahoo. If you do not have a Yahoo! account, they will let you have one for free, but you don't need to make a new email address to do that. You can just tell them during account creation that you already have an email account.

On the difference between HRC and BHO

Those of us who spend too much time with the Netroots have seen the critique of Obama as simply a cipher for Hillary, or the impatience with Obama's failure to throw red meat (red mud?) at Hillary in the debates. I wanted to give that problem some thought, and highlight the grassroot's need to show that the difference, in the end, is less in method than in substance.

The problem Obama faces is that in substance he doesn't differ all that much from Hillary -- bear with me for a moment, I'm sure there are many here who would disagree. He's a realist, and willing, as Kucinich notes, to use force as an instrument of diplomacy. He's in favor of health care reform, but also, as many have noted, he believes that the insurance companies should have a seat at the table.

He can be, and has been denounced as a 'corporate democrat,' particularly by people on the loony left.

But bottom line, we're just not going to find all that much of the red-meat rhetoric that you'd like to hear.

Yet... his method in pursuing the Democrat's brass ring is very different -- the event described here was put together in _six days_, for the most part by BHO's grassroots supporters.

We got word that he was coming last Friday.

Lord know what he would have gotten with media advertising. This is, by the way, something that Obama's professional staff must be thinking now, as they try to figure out how to unbalance Hillary: how many people do you have to pack into Lower Manhattan before the NY machine begins to take notice.

The grassroots element to his campaign is, of course, interesting because of the strategic choices it offers. But it is also significant in the effect it has on the candidate.

HRC and BHO may not differ all that much in their actual positions. But there are two big differences between them:

1) I (and the rest of the 20k people there) will, in some way be able to go to President Obama and say "YOU OWE US." I/We understand that he might not listen, but we also understand that he knows he would be risking his political support.
2) Something that WJClinton never had -- or never really tried to have -- during his presidency was the ability to mobilize crowds in the tens of thousands at short notice. I've blogged on the significance of this ability here:

Changing hearts and minds: dealing with Republicans

I posted the following as #110 on the New York Times Political Caucus Blog, arguing the point about Obama's potential effectiveness in dealing with Republicans

Patricia Barry (#92) raises a (one) good point, arguing that Obama has ‘a little too much of the can’t we jus all get along attitude.’ It is a point that seems to resonate with supporters of another candidate who claims that she ‘knows how to fight.’

Well, frankly, that ‘fighter’ may be too confident of her abilities to fight as a president: she and her supporters seem to think that they can ‘win’ by smearing, confronting, and embarassing their opponents to their face — a method we’ve become familiar with.

And it’s true that money and a spin machine can make these direct confrontations seem effective.

But these folks forget the realities of Presidential power — the president moves politics indirectly, by cutting her opponents off at the knees. (The Marines have a different expression for this). Reagan, in his ability to mobilize constituencies and put politicians in the hot seat, was past master of this art, with the result that his Presidency — not Bush’s — reshaped American politics (and, I would argue, set the nation off in the wrong direction).

The thing is, neither Bill Clinton, nor either of the George Bushes ever learned how to attack their opponents in this way. Their opponents in the legislature might hate them, but unless their reelection was threatened, they would not fear them. Their presidencies were, essentially, sterile as a result.

Obama has so much potential because he is one of the few Democrats in decades with the right chemistry to ‘attack’ his opponents in a way that will change their ‘hearts and minds’ — to refer back to the Marines’ expression.

Put it simply, all the talk in the world will not change the mind of an opposition politician. But pull together 24,000 supporters in his back yard, and he may begin to consider the error of his ways.

My latest effort to contribute to the campaign came from this thought.... what inspired me to support Barack Obama?

Watching his YouTube videos got me interested, but the biggest impetus to act was reading his book, The Audacity of Hope. It convinced me that Barack Obama should be our next President. His plans and philosophies were laid out in a concrete and compelling fashion.

So.... The other day I ordered ten copies of The Audacity of Hope from Amazon. They just arrived, and I've begun sending copies of these books to various associates.

Five of them are going to Democrats who are still undecided.

Five of them are going to Republicans who need to hear what he has to say.

The NYC Rally... so inspiring!

The NYC rally was incredible... the culmination of weeks of work from all the volunteers (including myself) and staff members. It was so fulfilling to see and hear Obama show us how together we can make a difference and how we can change the world. Several people in the audience (including myself) were moved to tears at the event. I never in a million years thought that such a candidate would step forward in my lifetime. Barack Obama is the most sensible, balanced, wise, charismatic, practical, and realistic leader of our time.

As a volunteer, I helped get the event setup and then walked around doing voter registration. Our team of ten volunteers signed up almost 500 people to vote. That in and of itself is amazing.. but it was just one small part of the tremendous effort everyone put into the campaign. While I personally only registered 17 new voters (wow is it difficult when so many people are already registered), I couldn't help but feel like I was part of something bigger.. part of a real movement to change the world for the better.

Barack Obama is truly a hero and a role model. His stances on Iraq, universal healthcare, universal education, and ending the game-playing of partisan politics that has plagued our country for decades, is truly on-point and is what our country needs in this new millenium.

A huge thanks to Barack Obama, all his staff members and volunteers for putting tremendous effort into making this a wonderful event for our city, and our nation.

I'm sure there will be posts to follow up on the New York City 4 Obama African-American Day parade in Harlem, but I figured I'd post a quickie because I came away psyched up about the campaign and our volunteers.

We had New York State Senator Perkins marching with us (about 40 of us in our custom "Harlem 4 Obama T-shirts) and we were immediately preceded by a rather glum and shufflish clot of Clinton supporters in two convertibles.

They may have been particularly glum because they were trailing a very large group of neutral activists, whose platform was, essentially "Hillary hasn't been elected yet, there must be a debate in Harlem between Clinton and Obama."

We, on the other hand, were having a grand old time. There was a scattering of "Hillary" "Hillary" people on the parade sidelines, a lot of "O-bama!" cheers, not a few "where is Obama?" questions.

But we were having a grand old time (and an entirely eco-friendly and shoeleather powered) because we were led by the Brooklyn Drum-line Express -- a high voltage group of teens recruited at a previous fundraiser. They were an absolute treasure, getting us through a hot day and a long walk with style.

So, what a blast.

The lesson, of course, for neophyte organizers like me -- do not leave home for a parade WITHOUT MUSIC! Huge.... the crowd got into us (even the Hillary supporters were counter-chanting in time with our drums). There is little so powerful as a group of people "moving together in time."

... And its another reason to canvass the high schools and colleges for support -- they may not vote, but they can sure pep up a rally!

When Does A School Brawl Become A Criminal Case?--The Jena 6

The Jena 6 case demonstrates how much trouble this nation is still in.

Teachers in schools across America will tell you that fights among students rarely bring out the District Attorney threatening young people of color. A suspension on both sides, but not jail!

An incident that began with a "white tree," the six learned nooses had been placed where they sought shade a day earlier. Why the ropes? Why no arrests for that? Make no mistake what it signifies. 100 years of lynching in America. The fact is this is 2007, but in Jena, Louisiana, and other places it is still 1807.

The administrators, and perhaps some teachers at this high school allowed this incident to simmer, knowing Louisiana's racial history, and it's very much alive.

Why no arrests for those students who placed the lynch symbol? Who brought in a rifle with 13 rounds of ammunition? Why didn't they notice the bogus injury of the "victim" who attended a party that same evening?

The Jena 6 case is bias, one-sided, racial in nature, and they need to remove the DA who rushed to judgment on six Black males, because "that's the way it is" in these hidden pockets of a time warp in many cities, and not just in the south.

This is the kind of mentality that kills, for while the DA (and school board member) threatened the protesting youths, another notorious and vile case (the 20 year-old Megan Williams recently rescued after a week of torture, rape, and beatings at the hands of six whites, -two mothers and their adult children), in West Virginia this week, even these "terrorists" are out on bail.

They know certain elements are still chasing the long-suffering, second-class citizens. What's even more outrageous is the fact an extremist web site posted the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all six Jena families, encouraging readers to "seek justice," by lynching. The site has not been shut down, despiste making racial and death threats on the Internet.

People are "sick of tired" of the two tier system of injustice here in the United States.

How can you preach about democracy anywhere in the world when your own citizens don't have it?

Especially those who were promised 40 acres and a mule?

When does freedom ring? Does freedom ring in the Jenas of Americas?
Bring it out into the open, expose and deal with this type of hatred, and selective justice that has no place in a free society.

Why haven't we heard comments from other candidates?

Where’s the commander-in-chief? He should pardon the six, in the same manner he pardoned Mr. Libby.

Instead of "misquoting" Barack Obama, the heat should be on the DA, Jena's elected representatives, and Governor Blanco.

Fear, ignorance, and the arrogance of the Jena officials who refused to release Michael Bell, should be exposed in the same manner as the Duke University case. The DA was sent to jail, and this DA deserves the same. It applies in this situation.

As of September 28, 2007, Mr. Bell was finally released on bail, due to the over 15,000 demonstrators who marched on Jena.

The charges, if not brought equally should be dropped. Justice demands it.

A Presidential Race Issue Browser

Hello to all,

Quite some time ago I thought I would be a better Obama volunteer if I knew how Barack's position on the issues compared to the other candidates. I was swimming in information trying to do an objective comparison of our position compared to other candidates. They name their positions different so you can't line them up easily for side by side comparisons. I realized after reading some of the posts before the "Walk For Change" that I wasn't the only one with the desire to study the issues.

I completed this website about 1 day before the walk for change, but chose not to mention it because I felt the sense of urgency was leaving us. I feel the timing is right now to announce the "Issue Browser" that I made. It is a free Geocities page, I built it with information from each candidates website, but mistakes may have accidentially been introduced. Please, please feel free to tell me about any improvements or repairs that I should make to it.

I organized the issues by comparing the US Constitution as it relates to powers of the President and then SUBJECTIVELY slotted each candidates individual issue into one or more of the constitutional powers. Any input from Political Science type people would be really appreciated; I'm a math, finance, mechanical type of thinker, and I am aware their is a LOT that I don't know. I invite help from Communications type people too, as I sometimes don't get my message across clearly.

I forced in text strings of web sites so you could read them and type them in an address bar if intrested, but I can't make them linkable. Gore Lieberman

I was just thinking back to Gore's awful decision to run with Joe Lieberman. I'd never really made sense of that decision, and it became even more confusing after the Lieberman/Lamont election. Why did Gore pair with a Connecticut Senator? All too easy to forget the considerations that CNN mentioned below.

It's a good reminder of why Democrats have good reason to dislike the Clinton clan. As Bill has said, "the good old days were pretty good." Too bad that Bill has only found his coattails now, eight years and one war later.
