The former VP "Dick" Cheney keeps repeating the same tired refrain, as if he is stuttering badly from drunkeness, that he "kept the country safe" by using torture. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Upon taking office, George W Bush and Dick Cheney were warned by the CIA and Clinton intelligence officials about the dire threat from Bin Laden and Al Queda. Bush and Cheney paid no attention to the warnings. In the spring of 2001, Condolezza Rice, the new National Security Advisor appointed by W Bush, published an article in Foreign Affairs magazine in which she stated that the threat from terrorists was overblown, a relic from a paranoid Clinton administration which was trying to divert attention away from scandals. The real threat to America came from Russia and China.

Over the summer of 2001, numerous American intelligence agencies were reporting alarming amounts of "chatter" being intercepted over the internet and telephone indicating a huge attack on America was coming. The NSA, CIA, FBI, and Defense Intelligence all were warning of an imminent attack. In August, W Bush, Cheney, and other top officials were given a Daily Briefing titled, "Bin Laden determined to attack the U.S." W Bush, and most importantly, Dick Cheney, did NOTHING, in spite of the seriousness of the warnings.

On September 11th, 2001, the most horrific terrorist attack ever by foreign nationals was perpetrated against the American people. Almost 3000 innocent Americans lost their lives. In spite of repeated warnings from multiple sources, W and Cheney did NOTHING to stop the attack.

Now, after this failure to protect America from the worst terrorist attack ever, Dick Cheney has the gall to claim that he kept America safe through torture. How is allowing 3000 people to die after you were warned for almost 9 months straight, "keeping us safe"???

Bush and Cheney were the most incompetent Pres and V. Pres we have ever had. They did NOT keep us safe from anything. Look again at the twin towers collapsing on video. I ASK ONCE MORE, HOW IS ALLOWING THAT HORRIFIC ACT OF MASS MURDER, "KEEPING US SAFE"?????

Over the past few weeks, Vice President-Elect Biden and I have announced some of the leaders who will advise us as we seek to meet America’s twenty-first century challenges, from strengthening our security, to rebuilding our economy, to preserving our planet for our children and grandchildren. Today, I am pleased to announce members of my science and technology team whose work will be critical to these efforts.

Whether it’s the science to slow global warming; the technology to protect our troops and confront bioterror and weapons of mass destruction; the research to find life-saving cures; or the innovations to remake our industries and create twenty-first century jobs—today, more than ever before, science holds the key to our survival as a planet and our security and prosperity as a nation. It is time we once again put science at the top of our agenda and worked to restore America’s place as the world leader in science and technology.

Right now, in labs, classrooms and companies across America, our leading minds are hard at work chasing the next big idea, on the cusp of breakthroughs that could revolutionize our lives. But history tells us that they cannot do it alone. From landing on the moon, to sequencing the human genome, to inventing the Internet, America has been the first to cross that new frontier because we had leaders who paved the way: leaders like President Kennedy, who inspired us to push the boundaries of the known world and achieve the impossible; leaders who not only invested in our scientists, but who respected the integrity of the scientific process.

Because the truth is that promoting science isn’t just about providing resources—it’s about protecting free and open inquiry. It’s about ensuring that facts and evidence are never twisted or obscured by politics or ideology. It’s about listening to what our scientists have to say, even when it’s inconvenient—especially when it’s inconvenient. Because the highest purpose of science is the search for knowledge, truth and a greater understanding of the world around us. That will be my goal as President of the United States—and I could not have a better team to guide me in this work.

Dr. John Holdren has agreed to serve as Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. John is a professor and Director of the Program on Science, Technology, and Public Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, as well as President and Director of the Woods Hole Research Center. A physicist renowned for his work on climate and energy, he’s received numerous honors and awards for his contributions and has been one of the most passionate and persistent voices of our time about the growing threat of climate change. I look forward to his wise counsel in the years ahead.

John will also serve as a Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology—or PCAST—as will Dr. Harold Varmus and Dr. Eric Lander. Together, they will work to remake PCAST into a vigorous external advisory council that will shape my thinking on the scientific aspects of my policy priorities.

Dr. Varmus is no stranger to this work. He is not just a path-breaking scientist, having won a Nobel Prize for his research on the causes of cancer—he also served as Director of the National Institutes of Health during the Clinton Administration. I am grateful he has answered the call to serve once again.

Dr. Eric Lander is the Founding Director of the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard and was one of the driving forces behind mapping the human genome—one of the greatest scientific achievements in history. I know he will be a powerful voice in my Administration as we seek to find the causes and cures of our most devastating diseases.

Finally, Dr. Jane Lubchenco has accepted my nomination as the Administrator of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is devoted to conserving our marine and coastal resources and monitoring our weather. An internationally known environmental scientist and ecologist and former President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Jane has advised the President and Congress on scientific matters, and I am confident she will provide passionate and dedicated leadership at NOAA.

Working with these leaders, we will seek to draw on the power of science to both meet our challenges across the globe and revitalize our economy here at home. And I’ll be speaking more after the New Year about how my Administration will engage leaders in the technology community and harness technology and innovation to create jobs, enhance America’s competitiveness and advance our national priorities.

I am confident that if we recommit ourselves to discovery; if we support science education to create the next generation of scientists and engineers right here in America; if we have the vision to believe and invest in things unseen, then we can lead the world into a new future of peace and prosperity.

For weeks I have been beating the following drum of analysis on how properly restructuring the auto industry with pure electric hybrids is THE critical magic bullet response to everything from global warming to restoring America’s manufacturing sector to drastically curtailing our oil-producing enemies ability to fund global terrorism.

Mickiboop, a Veteran Obama Blogger, gave me a link to a recent 60 minutes episode which details the Saudi Oil Biz. While the segment is largely a commercial for the wonders of the Saudi’s Oil Empire... there were several EXTREMELY revealing moments in interviews with high Saudi officials. Especially take note of what the Saudi Oil Minister says at the end of segment #1 and the look of deep fear and defensiveness in his eyes when he says it... it totally backs up this analysis...

“ But the oil companies know the cats are out of the bag now... just like when the cigarette companies finally couldn't resist the pressures of the ultimate high court... the court of global mass public opinion (no matter how many lying 'scientists' they trotted out to support their nefarious claims that cigarettes did not cause cancer... or in the case of big oil... that global climate crisis isn't real).”

We need to take the Auto CEO's up on what they said at the house and senate hearings... that they were ready to allow for federally mandated restructuring... meaning we can finally get them to build the kind of pure electric hybrids which will actually become best-sellers all over the world.

That old addage about the Chinese symbols making the word 'crisis' are one for 'danger' and one for 'opportunity' combined was never more apt. We are literally on this razor's edge brink... on the brink of destroying ourselves via global climate destruction and on the brink of saving ourselves via a complete restructuring of the auto AND energy industries towards wind/solar electricity grids and rechargeable pure electric hybrids (especially at a time when China and India are developing exploding middle class populations who will all be looking to buy the cars of the future).

If Obama stays resolute and doesn't compromise the obviously MASSIVE leverage we now have to make a revolutionary shift to save the planet AND millions of jobs by shifting to mass production of electric hybrids... we may very well get to witness an even more momentous historic accomplishment than his Presidential victory.

Mass production of pure electric, wind/solar powered hybrids is the lynchpin essential to every aspect of Obama's America and World Transforming agenda... whether we're talking about greening the planet or creating millions of good-paying jobs, or limiting our oil-producing enemies abilities to fund global terrorism thereby greatly reducing the threat of future wars over oil.

PS-- Why do you think gas prices are going so low right now? Because the oil industry has read the above-mentioned handwriting on the global wall and they are rightly panic stricken. Better start learning how to make long-life car batteries boys if you want to survive cause we're about to break the mass homicide/suicide pact you've attempted to foist upon the entire world, WIDE OPEN.

How perfect that our American economic recovery/revitalization via pure electric hybrid vehicle production should also be intimately linked to our global ecological recovery/revitalization.

Why do you think gas prices are going so low right now? Because the following strategy is precisely what the globe-strangling oil industry fears most.

I know many of you have seen this appeal already... but considering how DENSE Congress is, and how devoid of common sense solutions they are... I am forced to repeat this revolutionary concept yet again.

The following is an excerpt from my upcoming book... AMERICAN REVOLUTION II... it was originally posted immediately following the election.

The American Automobile Industry has proven one thing emphatically... It is literally TOO STUPID TO LIVE (In it's current brain-dead form).

The current financial crisis in the auto industry offers the Obama Administration a literally GOLDEN opportunity to achieve some MAJOR campaign goals. How?

Simple.

Say to the big three automakers... you want a multi-billion dollar bailout? Fine. In order to get it, you will dump your top management and resurrect the EV1. That's right... GM's original best electric car.

JUST AS IT WAS A MATTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY TO CONVERT AUTO PRODUCTION DURING WWII TO BUILD THE WEAPONS WHICH DEFEATED HITLER, SO TOO NOW WE WILL CONVERT OUR GAS GUZZLING MIDDLE EAST OIL ADDICTION INDUSTRY INTO ONE WHICH FREES US FROM THAT CORPORATE CRACK-PIPELINE ADDICTION ONCE AND FOR ALL.

More practical and affordable than the Chevy Volt... the EV1 is a normal sized family sedan that can go 100 MILES ON A SINGLE CHARGE. The Chevy Volt only goes 40 miles and costs an estimated $45,000 while the EV1 costs around $27,000... add in a $7,000 bailout funded tax break to the consumer and just watch how these electric vehicles will fly off the shelves. Another huge plus regarding the EV1 is that the production techniques already exist since it was produced in the 1990's for the California zero-emission imperative.

As a matter of fact... while we're at it... let's just boot the top executives and boards... force these strategic manufacturing changes, and then fill the management posts with vetted public service appointments. After all, if we're going to be the chief shareholders... it SHOULD be up to us how these companies are run.

Socialism shmocialism... I WANT PRACTICAL RESULTS NOT THE SAME OLD INCOMPETENT FAT PIG GLUTTONY & THIEVERY.

As a matter of fact... we will simply DEMAND that you build these green, job creating, middle east oil weaning vehicles OR NO GO ON THE BAILOUT DOUGH!!! Plus... we won't even have to wait for developmental ramp-up BECAUSE THE BLUEPRINTS AND PRODUCTION TECHNIQUE FOR THE EV1 ALREADY EXISTS!!!

Better still... we will DEMAND that GM share the blueprints with Ford and Chrysler who can then build their own style versions of the EV1... thereby meeting sure-to-be-exploding demand, driving down production costs, and paying GM a percentage of their profits.

You think there might be a market for a car which can be sold on the benefit of saving soldiers lives by getting them out of the middle east oil business AND saves the consumer 100's of dollars per month in fuel savings which can then go back into the economy? And as every junior economist will tell you... consumer spending makes up fully two thirds of all economic activity.

So there it is GM, Ford and Chrysler... you want the multi-billion dollar bailout? FINE... WE'RE TAKING YOU OVER AND MASS PRODUCING THE EV1 NOW!!!

Oh... and by the way... the EV1 will rapidly become the fastest selling American export EVER. Think that might be good for jobs, your bottom line, AND fighting global warming... not to mention the not so little ancillary benefit of dropping the price of oil even further thereby limiting our enemies ability to fund global terrorism via their depleted oil revenues? (Iran).

PS -- And when GM whines about the Chevy Volt being undercut... simply say... that car is out of reach for the average consumer anyway at $45,000 and impractical with only a 40 mile charge range... think of it as the Corvette of electric cars... a car that a GM VP admitted yesterday on MSNBC would not even be able to mass produce the essential batteries until 2010 AT BEST... the EV1 will end up outselling the toyota corolla RIGHT NOW.

Simple really. OPEC and the Exxon/Mobils of the world are running scared... Why? Because the current American auto manufacturer restructuring gives us the truly golden opportunity to revolutionize an about to explode global demand for pure electric, wind and solar rechargeable cars.

With the exponential growth of China and India's middle class... whoever is first to mass produce electric cars with a REAL driving range of 100 miles per charge will truly become the next manufacturing superpower... and guess what... AMERICA ALREADY HAS THE TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE THIS ECONOMY SAVING DREAM A REALITY.

All the economic experts have projected China to overtake our economy in about ten years... well, HERE'S A NEWS FLASH FOR THE SO-CALLED EXPERTS... IF WE START MASS PRODUCING THE EV! ELECTRIC VEHICLE WE CAN STOP THAT SLAVE LABOR/BRUTAL TYRANNY BY CHINA IN IT'S WORLD DOMINATING/TWISTING TRACKS.

And then of course there's even more job creating possibilities...

High speed rail buildout linking our cities to our suburbs may be one of the most important infrastructure job creators America can muster. All plans for highway and bridge rebuilding should integrate a high speed rail system at the onset so as to not end up making such rail buildout more difficult down the road.

Combine these efforts with turbine buildout of the wind corridor along with vast solar arrays in our desert southwest and a mass production of EV1 already existing electric auto manufacture which will create HUGE international demand for a KEY American product line... and just watch how we turn a near depression into one of the biggest and longest sustained economic booms the world has ever seen.

High speed rail is also an excellent way to rechannel bloated defense industry contractors/ jobs into constructive infrastructure jobs thereby thwarting the all too common business urge of military industrial contractors to sabotage attempts to pare down the defense budget... which happens to be the most likely place (DOD) to find billions in essential federal budget savings.

Of course, it also makes sense to increase vital funding for Veterans Affairs... what better more common sensical place to get that essential funding than from bloated unneccessary defense programs/antiquated weapons systems. Naturally, this will require a Secretary of Defense with both the military stature and political wisdom to get this cost-cutting job done with the least amount of corporate/political interference/sabotage.

Colin Powell or some like-minded military hero/pragmatist would be best suited to this all-important reform function cabinet post.

Given our current economic woes, no one can successfully argue against the simple fact that ONLY the most essential weapons systems are the ones worth funding anymore... especially support of our veterans as the ultimate living weapons system.

This integrated approach to national repair will succeed because it recognizes the essential rot and corruption which has led to financial disaster across all economic fronts and addresses them all with a comprehensive no-nonsense approach that has been sorely lacking in our governmental function for far too long.

Considering re-election will require the same grassroots effort, I'm stunned by this obvious snub and lack of good judgement.

Certainly, the nation has far bigger fish to fry... with 533,000 more jobs being lost in November and the auto makers about to go bust...two wars to end...

I was not going to be able to make it to DC anyway (a fact which still pains me), but I was looking forward to seeing my compatriots from this amazing community, carrying our banner on that historic day.

Alas... such is the lot of the hard-working life blood of America dear friends... the red in the red white and blue is all too often taken for granted...whether on the battlefield, or in the sphere of political battle.

This dualistic balance is perfectly displayed by the foreign policy team Obama has assembled and introduced today. Combined with his committment to rebuild America's crumbling infrastructure, creating millions of good American jobs, simultaneous to repairing our deteriorated global image... it becomes clear that America has chosen it's next president wisely.

The only problem now is the nearly two month wait for him to finally be sworn in.

An Answer To The Call For An Energy Independence Plan

"I admire your initiative... you kind of answer the "why not" question with your first point about how much is spent industrially and militarily to keep the oil flowing out of the gulf... this is all part of "the cross of iron" Eisenhower was talking about America hanging itself upon... to undo this self-destructive/globally destructive paradigm will take visionary strategems and leadership of biblical proportions.

We MUST essentially find a way to shift the planet killing/war feeding oil industries into massive peace-supporting new energy initiatives such as the buildout of high speed rail, which in the end, will make the industries of death more money than the current mass death paradigms.

THEN... with their crosshairs taken off the heads of our better angel leaders...we can do full buildout of the wind corridor, massive solar arrays, and home use wind/solar generators capable of charging pure electric hybrid cars which could become the NEXT biggest world export since computers and dvd players, thereby completely reinvigorating the American manufacturing sector, and of course, millions of good new jobs in the process.

And oh... by the way... those home generating units for the electric cars will put billions of freed up dollars back into the economy... if we're not spending hundreds on gas per month... that's money we can spend shopping and eating out and taking vacations right?

Oh yeah... and that built out new wind-powered/solar generated electricity grid? A PUBLICALLY owned utility... screw you remaining Enrons of the world and all your globe choking brethren... I guess we can let them help buildout the new infrastructure and give them some cut of the operating management and costs just to keep their filthy assassins at bay as well.

And there you have it. If we could gear up a similar effort to win WWII in a couple of years... we should be able to accomplish all of the above in 2-5 cause THAT'S what America is truly made of.

Believe me... I know all about Clintonian ruthlessness and dirty tricks.

But I would be a hypocrite and a small-minded childish bore if I failed to admit that she has atoned for many if not all of her Obama attacking sins.

Her Convention appeal/speech in Denver was nothing short of brilliant... not just because she rallied HER faithful to the Obama cause... but because she did so forcefully and with poetic sincerity. The closing rally from the words of Harriet Tubman perfectly captured the sense of enslavement we have ALL felt for the last eight years of fascistic abuse... hell.... the last 45 years of fascistic abuse... and it was nothing short of one of the most powerful political speeches in American History AND IT WAS GIVEN TO HELP FUEL THE OBAMA ELECTION.

Her campaigning, especially in Florida where she potently refuted the stagnant BS of "Drill baby drill,"...chanting instead, "JOBS BABY JOBS!"... again, perfectly charged the moment and the electorate in a state where the critical Clintonian influence paid HUGE dividends on election day.

Does the Clinton political entourage come with a travelling sideshow? Yes. But do we really think Barack Obama is not up to the task of keeping control of his top team members and advisors?

For what the persistent and often hysterical attacks against Hillary Clinton have come to express is less a repudiation of her... and more an expression of insecurity about our beloved president elect.

Enough IS finally ENOUGH.

In closing... let's not forget that ANY candidate for national office, must, as a prerequisite, be possessed of a fairly enormous ego. Hillary Clinton is no exception. She was, for the better part of a year... ahead in all the polls over Barack by up to 30%... the process of Obama's ascension was more akin to an exorcism of that ambition at points, than a simple political victory. And yes, that exorcism included some ofthe ugliest and most vicious tactics ever displayed in politics... everything from the race card to the incompetence card was played... but let's keep in REAL perspective why they were played, and why they were used so unsuccessfully... because they were employed out of sheer desperation and resentment... a desperation and resentment that was beautifully shed that night in Denver and again in Florida and all over the campaign trail.

And one final note... no matter how I feel about Hillary's Machiavellian tendencies, one thing is irrefutable... she is a sharp intellect, a leader, and the Clinton brand is STILL stellar globally.

So let's all take a deep breath... and give our president elect the credit and the faith he so richly has earned and deserves. We need to close ranks and not be like the self-destructive party we just defeated and which has sparked worldwide jubilation.

We must be the team which pulls closer together in these tough times if we are to have ANY chance of rising above the historic challenges confronting us.

Yes, the woman has made her share of egregious mistakes... but she has redeemed herself as well and when it counted most. Let's show her the respect a confident and faithful movement has the power to exert in the name of the common good and leave the team management to the young visionary we just gave our historic vote of confidence to.

Like many of you... I'm bone-aching tired. Tired of carrying such a heavy load... tired of the liars and their lies... tired of being despised.

Now that Bush and Co. has engineered the single most treasonous rape of the national and global trust... from Iraq to Katrina to Wall Street... we are actually being duped into wondering whether or not we should save some three million auto industry jobs at a time when losing them would almost certainly spell complete economic ruin.

First of all... there is no gold standard anymore... our money is only worth the honor and integrity we inject back into our society... so the only real question is whether we believe we deserve a long painful recession or a longer even more painful depression.

Man... when will we ever get over our "I'm not worthy of your love dear God" enslaving indoctrinating master/servant BS. Soon I hope. Soup lines and mass suicides were bad enough the first time around.

So fine... make as a condition of saving these woebegone industries of rusted out incompetence a complete management takeover which makes nothing but electric cars and hybrids... but to do nothing at all is to buy into the last phase of the neo-con scheme to completely gut America and sell off it's scrap to the Chinese and Saudis. Yeah... that'll really show those fat cat clowns whos's boss.

Money? Money is nothing but the last hypnotizing voodoo of the golden calf... printed like so much confetti... worth only as much misplaced faith as we put into it.

So long as we keep our faith where it belongs, in ourselves and in The Common Good (which is God's truest name) we'll turn out alright.

Gay Marriage Is None of The Government's Damn Business

Gay, lesbian and transgender brothers and sisters... here's your best argument.

Marriage is a RELIGIOUS RITE. PERIOD.

Separation of church and state never had a clearer cut precedent.

ALL marriages are therefore CIVIL UNIONS AS FAR AS THE CONSTITUTION AND LAW IS CONCERNED (see the fourteenth amendment as well as the most basic statements about all being created EQUAL in the eyes of the law).

MARRIAGE, as defined by the sancrosanct "separation of church and state" provisions, should ONLY be determined by the couples seeking such a RELIGIOUS CEREMONY and the CLERGY willing to perform said RITE (PUN INTENDED).

See you in court for a long overdue Constitutional VICTORY.

PS -- If you are somehow offended by gay marriages... then might I suggest you DON'T ATTEND THEM. Haven't our "Inalienable Constitutional protections of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" been abused enough for the past eight years? Hillary AND McCain In The Cabinet!?!?!?

It's a distinct possibility... here's why.

Personally, I beat Hillary like a pinata during the primaries... and even though I favor Gov. Bill Richardson for Secretary of State... it looks like Hillary may get the job.

The only plus I can see, is that it will keep her from maneuvering AGAINST Obama's legislative initiatives in the Senate...AND... no matter how we feel about her, she and Bill still have stellar brand name in the eyes of the world which is a key prerequisite for diplomatic success.

Believe me, I am NO FAN as evidenced by my CSPAN attacks against her being complicit in Walmart's slave labor tactics across the globe... but... if nothing else... Barack is proving to be a Real Politik type of leader... dispassionately weighing his options in terms of what he believes is best for the country.

And if You think this Hillary for Sec of State possibility is galling... what if he decides to name McCain Secretary of Defense?

The rationale? McCain will clearly have big respect from the Pentagon rank and file... and now that he is free from having to kiss up to the RepubliThug base... he can go back to one of his key goals on defense... cutting bullshit weapons systems that exist solely to pad the profits of the military industrial complex.

Remember, in tough times like these... it will take substantial budget cuts to fund mandates like healthcare reform and job creation. Considering there is no single departmental budget larger than Defense... what better place to free up the cash... which then of course requires someone respected enough within the Pentagon to get the cost cutting job done without getting whacked (mob style) in the process.

All of this may be like chugging a bottle of cod liver oil... but in the end... it could turn out to be sheer genius.

Plus... don't forget... if such controversial appointments don't play ball by Barack's rules... he can always give them the boot.

Better to make up any shortfalls with hydro, bio-fuels, and geothermal than to resort to the exorbitantly costly and filthy nuclear alternative.

Do you really think it's a coincidence that NO ONE wants spent nuclear fuel in their backyards? The stuff stays toxic for THOUSANDS of years... not to mention the regular cost overruns associated with building nuclear power plants.

Live on CSPAN from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial... along with the veterans and their families in attendance, I can see the face of my childhood hero... a 20 year old neighbor whose chopper went down in '68...

Me and the rest of my grade school buddies thought he was invincible... thought our playing war in our backyards with bottle rockets and firecrackers was all guts and glory tribute to him and those like him... but when we found out he was gone... our games went from high-spirited revelry to somber practice for what we believed was the fate of every boy in America... to go to war and maybe never return.

It wasn't until many years later that I learned of the lies and historically tone-deaf misguided policy which was directly responsible for those nearly 60,000 brave young men who died... not in vain... for they died protecting America in that most elemental and sacred of ways... they died loving and protecting each other, brother to brother... the living stars and stripes...

So now... as I watch those who made it home... the scars of war etched upon their tear streaked faces... I know that the ultimate tribute we can provide is not a parade... not some D.C. event... the ultimate tribute we can bestow upon these brave soldiers and courageous defenders of the living America is to bring our Iraq soldiers home as soon as possible... for every minute they are left to referee that bloody civil war... a living part of all of America's veteran brothers and now sisters and families suffers with them... and put quite simply... THEY HAVE SUFFERED ENOUGH.

Let us all pledge now together... NEVER AGAIN WILL WE SEND THESE FINEST PATRIOTS INTO HARMS WAY UNLESS IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR THE DEFENSE OF AMERICAN LIBERTY. NEVER AGAIN WILL WE ALLOW PROFITEERING LIARS AND THIEVES TO USE OUR BRAVEST PATRIOTS AS THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION.

Obama Spells New Hope for Human Rights

Celebrations of Barack Obama's election as president of the United States erupted in countries around the world. From Europe to Africa to the Middle East, people were jubilant. After suffering though eight years of an administration that violated more human rights than any other in US history, Obama spells hope for a new day.

While George W. Bush was president, I wrote "Cowboy Republic: Six Ways the Bush Gang Has Defied the Law," which chronicled his war of aggression, policy of torture, illegal killings, unlawful Guantanamo detentions and secret spying on Americans. When the book was published, it seemed unimaginable that we could elect a president who would turn those policies around. But the election of Obama holds that potential.

This is the first in a series of articles in which I will suggest how the Obama administration can start undoing some of the damage Bush wrought, by ratifying three of the major human rights treaties and the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court.

Although the US government frequently criticizes other countries for their human rights transgressions, the United States has been one of the most flagrant violators. We have refused to ratify the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR); the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW); and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). And while the United States worked with other countries for 50 years to create the International Criminal Court, it has failed to ratify that treaty as well. When we ratify a treaty, it becomes part of US law under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution.

In this article, I will explain why the United States should ratify the ICESCR, which is particularly relevant now that we are in the midst of the most serious economic crisis since the Great Depression.

In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose New Deal helped lift us out of the Depression, gave his famous Four Freedoms speech, focused on freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Roosevelt fleshed out the freedom from want and fear principles in his Economic Bill of Rights. It contained equality of opportunity, the right to a job and a decent wage, the end of special privileges for the few, universal civil liberties, guaranteed old-age pensions, unemployment insurance and medical care.

FDR's Bill of Rights formed the basis for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which Eleanor Roosevelt helped draft, and which the UN General Assembly adopted in 1949. The Declaration embraced two types of human rights: civil and political rights on the one hand; and economic, social and cultural rights on the other.

These rights were codified in two binding treaties: the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

The United States ratified the ICCPR in 1992. But it has refused to commit itself to the protection of economic, social and cultural rights. Since the Reagan administration, there has been a policy to define human rights in terms of civil and political rights, but to dismiss economic, social and cultural rights as akin to social welfare or socialism.

Indeed, the United States's inhumane policy toward Cuba exemplifies this dichotomy. The US government has criticized civil and political rights in Cuba while disregarding Cubans' superior access to universal housing, health care, education and public accommodations and its guarantee of paid maternity leave and equal pay rates.

The refusal to enshrine rights such as employment, education, food, housing and health care in US law is the reason the United States has not ratified the ICESCR. This treaty contains the right to work in just and favorable conditions, to an adequate standard of living, to the highest attainable standards of physical and mental health, to education, to housing, and to enjoyment of the benefits of cultural freedom and scientific progress. It also guarantees equal rights for men and women, the right to work, the right to form and join trade unions, the right to social security and social insurance and protection and assistance to the family.

In the United States, more than ten million people are unemployed, two to three million families are homeless each year, and 46 million have no health care benefits. Untold numbers lost their retirement savings when the stock market crashed. Obama has pledged to give the rebuilding of our economy top priority after he is sworn in as president. He promised to create jobs and to ensure that all Americans are covered by health insurance. When Obama said he would cut taxes for 95 percent of the people, but end the tax cuts for the rich, he was criticized for wanting to "spread the wealth." But Obama's plan is fully consistent with our progressive income tax system. After the election, 15,000 physicians called for a single-payer health care plan, which Obama and Congress should seriously consider.

The United States's flouting of the United Nations in its unilateral war on Iraq, and torture of prisoners in Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Iraq has engendered widespread condemnation in the international community. Yale Law School Dean Harold Koh, citing Professor Louis Henkin, summarized the hypocrisy of the United States in the area of human rights as follows: "In the cathedral of human rights, the US is more like a flying buttress than a pillar - choosing to stand outside the international structure supporting the international human rights system, but without being willing to subject its own conduct to the scrutiny of the system."

We should encourage President-elect Obama to send the ICESCR to the Senate for advice and consent to ratification. Becoming a party to that treaty will help not only the people in this country; it will also engender respect for the United States around the world.

As I drove home last week from my visit with the always fired up JFK Fan, everything felt different... the air itself seemed relieved.

The sight of cultures all across the globe spilling into the streets to dance and sing of LIBERATION... yes indeed... this was far more than just another American election.

Even in the reddest of red states like Oklahoma and Texas... there was an increased level of civility.. people holding doors for one another, white, black and every shade in between. Yes, there was a palpable sense of exhausted resignation too in those opposed to our historic cause... but they seemed somehow more peaceful... as if a great measure of toxicity had been driven out of them by this historic process of meaningful and essential CHANGE.

Now don't get me wrong... I'm not so starry eyed that i believe the powers of dissension and hatred won't regroup in some way... which is why I am thrilled that this site will remain here for our networking/mobilization efforts to continue... because while we HAVE heaved a mighty old boulder over the top... now the hard work of rebuilding our cherished American Middle Class Dream must commence.

I don't know which will seem longer in coming... the last excruciating weeks leading up to this historic election of mass liberation... or the weeks leading up to Team Obama being sworn in to take the reigns of power and CHANGE.

Our good buddy JFK Fan put me up in New England where we watched the returns come in like the living answer to a waiting world's group prayer. The man is a testament to the heartfelt dedication and faith of this truly amazing movement. To all of you, both here and abroad, it will probably take YEARS before the total weight and scope of this victory can finally be fully absorbed for it is truly that monumental.

Fear, death and destruction rejected in favor of hope, vision and mutual respect. Even the Republican Leadership was openly relieved, in the immediate, to see such a joyous victory... But let's not kid ourselves... what's left of the decimated Republican base will undoubtedly go back to their deep muscle memory response/tactics of attack attack attack... country first my ass.

So it's a VERY good thing we are keeping this online community going because we will need it to help mobilize the focus and support essential to achieving all of the reforms and changes required by our current national/global crisis.

Winning the nomination was the first giant boulder we all helped push up and over the mountain to fill the breach between what our abused democracy had been allowed to become and what our WE THE PEOPLE empowering founders always intended to be a nation of Liberty and Justice for ALL.

The next even more massive boulder was of course the just won election... but we have so much more work to do before the chasm between what is and what should be, has been properly and so essentially achieved... JOBS... HEALTHCARE... GLOBAL AFFAIRS... EDUCATION... ENERGY... CLIMATE CRISIS... The good news is... we are stronger now due to our combined efforts, and we are ready to make it all happen.

So by all means... let's celebrate this historic win... but never forgetting that the work has just begun... and the best is still yet to come.

Just as middle class consumer spending is the main engine which drives American prosperity at it's best... Out of balance thievery by the top 1% of the wealthiest individuals and corporations as facilitated by the Republican Party is the main obstacle to keeping our all-important middle class prosperity engine humming.

The last eight years have amounted to stealing from the poor to give to the rich... a recipe for disaster that has even crippled the wealthy's ability to prosper.

So why would the forces of wealth at the head of the corporo-fascist movement (the Republicans as puppeted by big corporate money), allow the system to break down so completely that it would directly affect their bottom lines as well?

Because like locusts, they have no remorse for their victims... devoid of any larger innovative vision of renewal... they simply consume everything and move on to greener pastures... in this case to third world nations where they can soullessly pad their profits on the blood sweat and tears of slave labor, in many cases, child slave labor... for the corporation is a blood-drinking zombie whose only allegiance is to profits and not people, or country.

These corporate traitors and the "politicians" like McCain/Palin who serve them above and beyond God OR Country, are treating America the same way the junk bond traders of the 80's treated American businesses... they sold them out piece by piece, job by job and now they are doing the same thing on a national scale to America.

Country first? What a crock.

So how do we break their spell? How do we save our jobs and America if these vampires in patriot's clothing are so intent on selling us to China and the Saudis?

By using the only language they understand... PROFITS. BY PRESENTING A BETTER BUSINESS PLAN THAN THEIR CURRENT FASCIST REPUBLITHUG TRAITOROUS SELLOUT NIGHTMARE PROVIDES.

JUST ANNOUNCED... Whirlpool 8,000 jobs to be cut..., American Express, 7,000 jobs to be cut... Motorola, 3,000 jobs to be cut.

So what is the vision which can save America from the corporate wolves? We must shift, as President Eisenhower urged, from a war-based unsustainable economy, to a globally essential green technology economy, and export these new technologies as the restorative backbone to our best days being ahead.

Better more efficient wind turbines and solar arrays... electric cars which can travel 60 miles on a charge and which doesn't use ANY fossil fuels... including a home charging unit which can supply energy to the home as well. Think there might be a market for such a device? Who better to manufacture such a device than our converted defense industries IN LEAGUE WITH THE FINE YOUNG MINDS OF OUR ENVIED UNIVERSITY SYSTEM.

Does this mean we don't want new innovative more cost-effective defense technologies? Of course not... but, a combination of leaner more efficient defense spending (a strategy McCain agrees with by the way), and defense industry sharing with university and think tank innovation... we can create the technologies this climate crisis stricken world community is clamoring for.

Look at how America mobilized itself to build the armed forces needed to save the world from nazi fascism in WWII with hundreds of tanks and planes and ships built virtually overnight. Can you imagine if the same "can't do" bullshit was the order of the day back then? If so-called leaders had said it would take 10 to 20 years for us to convert our industries to combat global tyranny? IF WE COULD MOBILIZE SUCH AN EFFORT THEN... WE CAN MOBILIZE SUCH AN AMERICA AND PLANET SAVING EFFORT NOW!

America is ready willing and able to mobilize an historic national effort to remake ourselves into the competitive middle class MANUFACTURING ECONOMY WE ONCE WERE... THE ONLY THING THAT HAS BEEN MISSING, IS VISIONARY LEADERSHIP... UNTIL NOW.

And how about this for a green project which can create tens of thousands of high paying jobs while simultaneously re-directing our defense industries to peacetime activity that is MORE profitable than war as Grand-Daddy President Eisenhower so wisely advised... LIKE HIGH SPEED MAGNETIC LEVITATION TRAINS CONNECTING OUR CITIES TO OUR SUBURBS RUN PURELY ON WIND AND SOLAR POWER.

Sounds like science fiction? Well, the fact is... these 200 MPH plus trains already exist in several European nations as well as Japan. Building this system out would not only relieve urban traffic congestion, but it would, again, create millions of high paying jobs from the engineers needed to design the system, to the construction workers needed to build out the actual tracks.

By reinventing America in these ways... (just think of how much more you'll have in your pocket if you are paying NOTHING to drive your car every month!) we restore the American spending middle class engine which drives ALL prosperity including the upper classes prosperity AND we will have given big business a better blueprint by which to EXPLODE THEIR PROFITS BEYOND WHAT THEY COULD MAKE EVEN IN WAR OR BY THE SELLOUT OF THE AMERICAN WORKER IN FAVOR OF SELF-DESTRUCTIVE SLAVE LABOR.

THIS is how America can best save ourselves from our worst tendencies and usher in a better day FOR ALL AMERICANS.

Obama Will Be One of The Greatest (and Most Loved) American Presidents

Great presidents are made great by horrible circumstances combined with character, temperament and intelligence. Like firemen, cops, doctors or soldiers, presidents need a crisis to shine.

Obama is one of the most intelligent presidential aspirants to ever step forward in American history. The likes of his intellectual capabilities have not been surpassed in public life since the Founding Fathers put pen to paper. His personal character is also solid gold. Take heart, America : we have the leader for our times.

I say this as a white, former life-long Republican. I say this as the proud father of a Marine. I say this as just another American watching his pension evaporate along with the stock market! I speak as someone who knows it's time to forget party loyalty, ideology and pride and put the country first. I say this as someone happy to be called a fool for going out on a limb and declaring that, 1) Obama will win, and 2) he is going to be amongst the greatest of American presidents.

Obama is our last best chance. He's worth laying it all on the line for.

This is a man who in the age of greed took the high road of community service. This is the good father and husband. This is the humble servant. This is the patient teacher. This is the scholar statesman. This is the man of deep Christian faith.

Good stories about Obama abound; from his personal relationship with his Secret Service agents (he invites them into his home to watch sports, and shoots hoops with them) to the story about how, more than twenty years ago, while standing in the check-in line at an airport, Obama paid a $100 baggage surcharge for a stranger who was broke and stuck. (Obama was virtually penniless himself in those days.) Years later after he became a senator, that stranger recognized Obama's picture and wrote to him to thank him. She received a kindly note back from the senator. (The story only surfaced because the person, who lives in Norway , told a local newspaper after Obama ran for the presidency. The paper published a photograph of this lady proudly displaying Senator Obama's letter.)

Where many leaders are two-faced; publicly kindly but privately feared and/or hated by people closest to them, Obama is consistent in the way he treats people, consistently kind and personally humble. He lives by the code that those who lead must serve. He believes that. He lives it. He lived it long before he was in the public eye.

Obama puts service ahead of ideology. He also knows that to win politically you need to be tough. He can be. He has been. This is a man who does what works, rather than scoring ideological points. In other words he is the quintessential non-ideological pragmatic American. He will (thank God!) disappoint ideologues and purists of the left and the right.

Obama has a reservoir of personal physical courage that is unmatched in presidential history. Why unmatched? Because as the first black contender for the presidency who will win, Obama, and all the rest of us, know that he is in great physical danger from the seemingly unlimited reserve of unhinged racial hatred, and just plain unhinged ignorant hatred, that swirls in the bowels of our wounded and sinful country. By stepping forward to lead, Obama has literally put his life on the line for all of us in a way no white candidate ever has had to do. (And we all know how dangerous the presidency has been even for white presidents.)

Nice stories or even unparalleled courage isn't the only point. The greater point about Obama is that the midst of our worldwide financial meltdown, an expanding (and losing) war in Afghanistan, trying to extricate our country from a wrong and stupidly mistaken ruinously expensive war in Iraq, our mounting and crushing national debt, awaiting the next (and inevitable) al Qaeda attack on our homeland, watching our schools decline to Third World levels of incompetence, facing a general loss of confidence in the government that has been exacerbated by the Republicans doing all they can to undermine our government's capabilities and programs... President Obama will take on the leadership of our country at a make or break time of historic proportions. He faces not one but dozens of crisis, each big enough to define any presidency in better times.

As luck, fate or divine grace would have it (depending on one's personal theology) Obama is blessedly, dare I say uniquely, well-suited to our dire circumstances. Obama is a person with hands-on community service experience, deep connections to top economic advisers from the renowned University of Chicago where he taught law, and a middle-class background that gives him an abiding knowledgeable empathy with the rest of us. As the son of a single mother, who has worked his way up with merit and brains, recipient of top-notch academic scholarships, the peer-selected editor of the Harvard Law Review and, in three giant political steps to state office, national office and now the presidency, Obama clearly has the wit and drive to lead.

Obama is the sober voice of reason at a time of unreason. He is the fellow keeping his head while all around him are panicking. He is the healing presence at a time of national division and strife. He is also new enough to the political process so that he doesn't suffer from the terminally jaded cynicism, the seen-it-all-before syndrome afflicting most politicians in Washington . In that regard we Americans lucked out. It's as if having despaired of our political process we picked a name from the phone book to lead us and that person turned out to be a very man we needed.

Obama brings a healing and uplifting spiritual quality to our politics at the very time when our worst enemy is fear. For eight years we've been ruled by a stunted fear-filled mediocrity of a little liar who has expanded his power on the basis of creating fear in others. Fearless Obama is the cure. He speaks a litany of hope rather than a litany of terror.

As we have watched Obama respond in a quiet reasoned manner to crisis after crisis, in both the way he has responded after being attacked and lied about in the 2008 campaign season, to his reasoned response to our multiplying national crises, what we see is the spirit of a trusted family doctor with a great bedside manner. Obama is perfectly suited to hold our hand and lead us through some very tough times. The word panic is not in the Obama dictionary.

America is fighting its 'Armageddon' in one fearful heart at a time. A brilliant leader with the mild manner of an old-time matter-of-fact country doctor soothing a frightened child is just what we need. The fact that our 'doctor' is a black man leading a hitherto white-ruled nation out of the mess of its own making is all the sweeter and raises the Obama story to that of moral allegory.

Obama brings a moral clarity to his leadership reserved for those who have had to work for everything they've gotten and had to do twice as well as the person standing next to them because of the color of their skin. His experience of succeeding in spite of his color, social background and prejudice could have been embittering or one that fostered a spiritual rebirth of forgiveness and enlightenment. Obama radiates the calm inner peace of the spirit of forgiveness.

Speaking as a believing Christian I see the hand of a merciful God in Obama's candidacy. The biblical metaphors abound. The stone the builder rejected is become the cornerstone... the last shall be first... he that would gain his life must first lose it... the meek shall inherit the earth...

For my secular friends I'll allow that we may have just been extraordinarily lucky! Either way America wins.

Only a brilliant man, with the spirit of a preacher and the humble heart of a kindly family doctor can lead us now. We are afraid, out of ideas, and worst of all out of hope. Obama is the cure. And we Americans have it in us to rise to the occasion. We will. We're about to enter one of the most frightening periods of American history. Our country has rarely faced more uncertainty. This is the time for greatness. We have a great leader. We must be a great people backing him, fighting for him, sacrificing for a cause greater than ourselves.

A hundred years from now Obama's portrait will be placed next to that of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt. Long before that we'll be telling our children and grandchildren that we stepped out in faith and voted for a young black man who stood up and led our country back from the brink of an abyss. We'll tell them about the power of love, faith and hope. We'll tell them about the power of creativity combined with humility and intellectual brilliance. We'll tell them that President Obama gave us the gift of regaining our faith in our country. We'll tell them that we all stood up and pitched in and won the day. We'll tell them that President Obama restored our standing in the world. We'll tell them that by the time he left office our schools were on the mend, our economy booming, that we'd become a nation filled with green energy alternatives and were leading the world away from dependence on carbon-based destruction. We'll tell them that because of President Obama's example and leadership the integrity of the family was restored, divorce rates went down, more fathers took responsibility for their children, and abortion rates fell dramatically as women, families and children were cared for through compassionate social programs that worked. We'll tell them about how the gap closed between the middle class and the super rich, how we won health care for all, how crime rates fell, how bad wars were brought to an honorable conclusion. We'll tell them that when we were attacked again by al Qaeda, how reason prevailed and the response was smart, tough, measured and effective, and our civil rights were protected even in times of crisis...

We'll tell them that we were part of the inexplicably blessed miracle that happened to our country those many years ago in 2008 when a young black man was sent by God, fate or luck to save our country. We'll tell them that it's good to live in America where anything is possible. Yes we will.

Syrians hold funerals for people killed in US raid

SUKKARIYEH, Syria – Families in this village near the Iraqi border buried loved ones Monday who they said were killed when the U.S. military launched a rare attack in Syrian territory. During the funerals, angry residents shouted anti-American slogans and carried banners reading: "Down with Bush and the American enemy."

The Syrian government said four U.S. military helicopters attacked a civilian building under construction shortly before sundown Sunday, killing eight people in the village of Sukkariyeh — about five miles inside the Syrian border.

A U.S. military official in Washington confirmed Sunday that special forces had conducted a raid in Syria that targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq.

"We are taking matters into our own hands," the official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids.

Syria's foreign minister, Walid al-Moallem, described the raid as "cowboy politics," Speaking in London, al-Moallem said of the U.S. raid. He warned that if there was a repeat "we would defend our territories."

The attack is another sign that the United States is aggressively launching military raids across the borders of Afghanistan and Iraq to destroy insurgent sanctuaries. In Pakistan, U.S. missile strikes have killed at least two senior al-Qaida operatives this year and ramped up the threat to groups suspected of plotting attacks on Western troops in Afghanistan and terror strikes in the West.

Iran condemned the attack as did Russia, which has had close ties with Syria since Soviet times.

The raid also put the Baghdad government in an awkward position while negotiating a security pact with the United States. Iraqi officials said Monday they hoped the raid would not harm their relations with neighboring Syria, but the government spokesman in Baghdad noted that it happened in an area known as a terrorist haven.

"We are trying to contain the fallout from the incident," Iraqi Foreign Ministry undersecretary Labid Abbawi said. "It is regrettable and we are sorry it happened."

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh, however, said the area where the raid occurred "is a theater ofmilitary operations where anti-Iraq terrorist activity takes place."

The Syrian government statement said eight people were killed, including a man and his four children and a woman. However, local officials said seven men were killed and two other people were wounded, including a woman among the injured.

An Associated Press journalist at the funerals in the village's cemetery saw the bodies of seven men — none of them children. The discrepancy could not immediately be explained.

Sunday's attack also comes at a time when Syria appears to be making some amends with the United States. Though Syria has long been viewed by the U.S. as a destabilizing country in the Middle East,Damascus has been trying in recent months to change its image and end years of global seclusion.

Syria's foreign minister, Walid al-Muallem, was in London on Monday and scrapped plans to hold a joint news conference with his British counterpart.

Jihad Makdissi, a spokesman at Syria's embassy in the British capital, accused the United States of "applying the law of the jungle."

The U.S. military in Iraq said it did not have any information about the incident. But the raid came just days after the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq said American troops were redoubling efforts to secure the Syrian border, which he called an "uncontrolled" gateway for fighters entering Iraq.

In Sukkariyeh, villager Jumaa Ahmad al-Hamad told The Associated Press he was walking Sunday when he saw four helicopters, two of which landed.

"Shooting then started ringing for more than 10 minutes," al-Hamad said Monday. After the helicopters stopped firing and left the area, he and other villagers went to the site and discovered the bodies of his uncle, Dawoud al-Hamad, and four of his uncle's sons, who he said were killed.

Syrian government newspapers also published scathing criticisms in Monday's editions. Tishrin splashed its front pages with a headline denouncing the raid as a "U.S. war crime," while the Al-Baath newspaper described the attack in an editorial as a "stunning, shocking and unprecedented adventure."

"Even while it's preparing itself to leave the White House, the Bush administration seems determined to demonstrate its foolishness, and this is a dangerous indication of political madness and stupid arrogance," Al-Baath said.

Some Iraqi officials warned that the U.S. military raid into Syria could be used by opponents of the security pact under negotiation with the United States.

"Now neighboring countries have a good reason to be concerned about the continued U.S. presence in Iraq," prominent Kurdish politician Mahmoud Othman told The Associated Press.

Abbawi said he did not believe the Syrian raid would affect the security negotiations but acknowledged that "some will use the incident for the argument against the agreement."

Sunday's attack comes as the flow of foreign fighters into Iraq has been declining. A senior U.S. military intelligence official told the AP in July that it had been cut to an estimated 20 a month. That's a 50 percent decline from six months ago, and just a fifth of the estimated 100 foreign fighters who were infiltrating Iraq a year ago, according to the official.

The area targeted Sunday is near the Iraqi border city of Qaim, which had been a major crossing point for fighters, weapons and money coming into Iraq to fuel the Sunni insurgency.

Ninety percent of the foreign fighters enter through Syria, according to U.S. intelligence. Foreigners are some of the most deadly fighters in Iraq, trained in bomb-making and with small-arms expertise and more likely to be willing suicide bombers than Iraqis.

Yet ANOTHER Painful "Senior Moment" For John McCain On MEET THE PRESS

As a lifelong registered Independent... I was prepared to vote for John McCain in 2000. But that seems like a million years ago to me now considering how far from grace this once heroic American figure has fallen.

Ever since selling his soul to the RNC and their corporo-fascist America-betraying $pecial Intere$t$ in that downright creepy ring-kissing, George Bush hugging ceremony on a national stage... Watching John McCain publically wrestle with his inner demons has been a national referendum on a once proud leader's pathetic and utterly regrettable self-destruction.

Believe me... I take no joy in pointing out that John McCain is clearly having mental/cognitive difficulties ON TOP of his clear shift to the dark side of American politics, but the man IS seeking the most powerful position of leadership in the world so EVERYTHING MUST BE ON THE TABLE... ESPECIALLY something as obviously performance-affecting as this candidate's clearly eroded mental faculties.

Yesterday on MEET THE PRESS, as McCain attempted to name the five ex-secretaries of state now endorsing his campaign... he got visibly stuck searching for the last name, George Schultz.

Now this in and of itself wouldn't be such a big deal... we've all had the ocassional momentary lapse of memory. However, McCain's response to this lapse was what was so troubling.
