I'm Voting Because...

Change happens from the ground up. And in this case, change is happening quite literally on street level. In the form of text messaging, passersby are invited to send in supportive messages on why they are voting for Barack Obama to an interactive projection on a wall, finishing the line "I'm voting because..."

The projections move beyond the typical static signage and billboards, allowing the public to create their own, customized Obama poster. Participants typically snap photos of their messages up on the wall. The project encourages the sharing of positive messages, negative and mean spirited messages about either campaign are not displayed.

This is part of an interactive roadtrip criss-crossing the heartland from Indiana to Michigan, through Ohio, then into Pennsylvania for the ten days preceding Election day. Volunteers with the Obama campaign invite people to participate in the large scale projections, and have been successful in signing up more volunteers to help out with getting out the vote and issue awareness.

Campaign for Change Road Blogger Paul Notzold wrote this post.

Day 1: Last Words

This post is the latest in a series chronicling Governor Rendell's Road to Change Bus Tour.

Day 1 of the Road for Change tour concluded with rallies in New Castle, Monaca and Beaver. All of our events today took place in a cold, driving rain. Under most circumstances the conditions would have made it a day to forget, but with only a week left until the election, the tough weather actually served to accentuate the passion and the commitment behind this campaign. Abass submits these words to end the day:

I was able to meet some of the great volunteers of this region. Their work really helped pull of a great event and will drive this camapign to victory. Doing all these events, sometimes we forget how powerful it is for citizens to meet their politcal leaders and make that personal connection with their government- the enthusiam these folks had for this event is so infectious. That so many folks would come out during late hours and in cold weather is a tremendous energizer....I wish I could bottle it up.

Pennsylvania Newspapers Overwhelmingly Endorse Barack

With the campaign entering its final stage, newspaper editorial boards around Pennsylvania have been meeting to decide which candidate to endorse for President and in an overwhelming number of cases, their answers have been the same: Barack Obama.

The Campaign for Change is fighting for every last undecided vote and these endorsements can be a useful resource for voters who are still trying to make up their minds. If you know anyone who is still on the fence, please send them some of the links listed here:

Newspapers that Backed George W. Bush and Made the Switch

Erie Times-News (Endorsed George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004) - “Our pick: Barack Obama for president”: Because of his steady hand, his demonstrated intelligence and his promise to listen to a range of views on domestic and international issues, the Erie Times-News Editorial Board endorses U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for president… In Sen. Obama, we see a president who will inspire Americans to work together to address the current financial crisis and to repair our international relationships.

The York Daily Record (Endorsed George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004) - “Barack Obama for president” [Obama's] campaign exudes optimism -- much like Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did at times in our recent history when our nation suffered from crises of confidence Ultimately, though, Barack Obama, standing on the doorstep of history as the first black man with a realistic chance to become president, is the best hope for a nation that is searching for inspiration and whose highest ideals hold that all men are created equal.

Easton Express-Times (Endorsed George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004) - “The Express-Times endorses Barack Obama for president over John McCain”: A riddle for our times: Most Americans agree we are confronted with a historic choice in this election, one that will determine whether we continue climbing the mountain or fall off the precipice, with dire consequences. Obama does not win this by default. He wins The Express-Times' endorsement because of his platform, because he has demonstrated a cool head in troubled times, because he inspires confidence and because he is conducting an above-board campaign.

Scranton Times Tribune (Endorsed George W. Bush in 2000) - “Barack Obama for president”: Change of course requires new leadership Pressing economic and security conditions, separately, are massive issues. Together, they point to the overarching requirement for the man who will be elected president: the leadership ability to inspire Americans to a new era of greatness. As this campaign has progressed, it has become clearer with time that Barack Obama is well-suited to the awesome tasks ahead. The Times-Tribune endorses him for president… America's problems call for new leadership. In that regard, Mr. Obama has the potential to be a truly transformational figure.

Harrisburg Patriot-News (Endorsed George W. Bush in 2000) - “Democrat shows temperament, judgment to be a good president”: It's this approach to the office and its challenges that we believe sets Obama apart from his Re publican rival. His cool and thoughtful analysis, his willingness to consider alternatives and his promise to seek pragmatic, rather than ideologically pure solutions suits him especially well. Where McCain, the self-described "maverick," is inclined to go it alone when he believes he's right, Obama is much more likely to seek counsel from those offering a different perspective. It is such "intellectual curiosity" and "intellectual vigor," to use Gen. Colin Powell's terms, that this nation clearly needs in its leaders in this troubled time.

Big City and Small Town Papers Alike Make the Call for the Change We Need

Pocono Record - “Obama can inspire us to be 'United' States again”: Obama continues to reach out to all Americans, in small towns and big cities, rich and poor, Christian and non-Christian. He has focused his stump speeches and public statements on the issues and acquitted himself with calm and intelligence during three televised debates. His spirit of inclusiveness has drawn large crowds to campaign events across the nation, including the Midwest where his mother and grandparents are from and where he has put down roots. His campaign fundraising arm boasts of some 3 million contributors, most of them small donors. In a recent endorsement, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, referred to Obama as "transformational figure" who represents a new generation of Americans on the world stage. Our divided nation badly needs this kind of leader.

Sunbury Daily Item - “Our pick: Barack Obama”: These are trying times. We are in a war with no clear path to victory. Our dependence on foreign oil has been crippling and the economy has gone from sour to outright putrid. Increasing numbers of financial experts have called the current economic situation the most perilous facing this nation since the Great Depression. Which of the two candidates for president, then, seems most reminiscent of FDR and his thoughtful, inspiring style of leadership? The answer seems clear. That is why The Daily Item is endorsing Barack Obama for president.

Beaver County Times - “Common ground: Obama has shown the qualities our next president will need”: The next president of the United States doesn’t necessarily have to be a uniter. He does, however, have to be a leader who can convince Americans to start pulling in the same direction. For that reason, our editorial board endorses Democrat Barack Obama for president. We start with a basic premise: Neither candidate will be able to fulfill the promises he is making. In addition to working with a dysfunctional Congress, the next president will be limited by the economic meltdown. Therefore, what matters most is that the next president has the temperament to be a steady, focused leader who can communicate with his fellow Americans.

Pottstown Mercury: “Sen. Barack Obama is best choice to lead forward through change”: Former Secretary of State Colin Powell last week endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president, offering a perspective on the system that has brought the nation to this point, as well as on the candidates who will lead us forward from it. Powell spoke of the polarization that has overtaken much of the political thinking in 2008, and he chastised the Republican platform and Sen. John McCain's campaign for taking things too far. This newspaper's choice is Sen. Barack Obama. We believe he has demonstrated, particularly through how he has conducted this campaign, the ability to lead through differences and inspire unity.

Wilkes-Barre Times Leader - “Barack Obama”: Sen. Barack Obama exudes a cool confidence during debates and other high-pressure situations that, even many of his detractors will admit, makes him appear composed, somewhat soothing and, yes, even presidential. But Obama’s composure – combined with his intelligence, ideas, communication skills and capacity to rally people to a cause – gave our endorsement board the evidence it needed to reach a decision: Democrat Barack Obama is the man for the job... the 47-year-old Obama has shown, especially during the recent Wall Street calamity, that he will react quickly to a crisis, consult with trusted experts and draw up an appropriate response – without appearing flustered. His opponent, by contrast, looked at times during the market collapse much as he did during the second presidential debate – adrift. His election would help to salve some of the country’s longest-festering wounds and energize a population inspired by the notion that Obama first raised at the 2004 Democratic Convention. He said this is not a nation of red states and blue states, but rather the United States.

Delaware County Times - “Daily Times endorses Obama for president”: Change. It is the single word that has dominated the political landscape for months. On Jan. 20, 2009, change will indeed arrive. Both Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona have made change a hallmark of their campaigns. There is another reason to believe Obama would be the more effective leader. He has proven he is more than an eloquent orator. Throughout the course of the campaign, he has appeared unflappable, even in the face of ugly accusations and mud-slinging. Instead, he appears thoughtful, cool and not prone to rash action. On the other hand, McCain’s temperament and actions continue to sow doubt. The Daily Times endorses Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president.

Philadelphia Daily News - “BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT” At this point, maybe no one has the solutions to the country's problems, but Barack Obama has the best chance, by far, of finding them...He is big enough for the moment. As he has throughout his career as a community organizer, a law student, a state legislator and a U.S. senator, he will apply an intellectually rigorous approach to making decisions, crafting policy and bringing people together. But it is his core temperament - and the movement that he has built, and that has been built around him - that will allow him to lead Americans into a challenging future with confidence.

Philadelphia Inquirer - “For President”: The situation facing the next American president may be the most dire since Franklin Roosevelt took over the job in 1933. With the Great Depression holding the nation by its throat and as talk of another war in Europe lurched toward reality, FDR offered this country something better than money or guns - hope. Both major candidates are trying to avoid association with Bush's failed policies. But only one does so successfully. On every issue important to America, Barack Obama offers a plan that would pull this nation from the precipice built by bad Bush decisions. The Inquirer endorses BARACK OBAMA for president.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - “It's Obama: We need a president who will break with the past”: American exceptionalism -- the idea that this nation by virtue of its history, political beliefs and the blessings of divine providence has a favored place in the world community -- is easy to believe in this year of a presidential election that is in every way exceptional. In three weeks, Americans will be called upon to make an exceptional judgment worthy of the times. The forces of history appear to invite boldness and the Post-Gazette believes they should be heeded by voting for the only authentic, fresh agent of change in this race, Barack Obama.

After nearly two years of campaigning and countless volunteer shifts, our final Get Out the Vote (GOTV) push is now just a week away. The Campaign for Change has put together the most extensive Get Out the Vote operation in Pennsylvania presidential election history and the Campaign for Change field staffers took it out for a test drive today. Even with rain in some corners of the state, we had volunteers lining up out the door to get canvass packets in all 81 Campaign for Change offices. Here is the scene in Scranton at 10am, just before the first wave of canvassers headed out:

The Campaign for Change is actively recruiting volunteers for our four day Get Out the Vote operation (11/1-11/4). It is not too late to get involved in this historic campaign. When this election is all over you are going to want to be able to tell your kids, and your grandkids that you knocked doors for Barack. Signup here to get involved.

"You'd rather be on the phone talking with your friends?"

Barack's run for the presidency has energized young voters in a way we have not seen in more than a generation. Young people have been foundational in this campaign from the start, providing energy at rallies, boots on the ground in our local field offices, and multimedia creativity over the Internet. Only one question remains. Will they get out to vote?

The Youth Vote Project is a collection of high school seniors which aims to ensure that this year, the answer is yes.
The Biggest Barack You Have Ever Seen

With the help of artists across northeastern Pennsylvania, Hilary and Jim Lennox chose to put a field on their property to good artistic use this election season. Expressing their hope for change in the coming months, the artists involved painted a 100 by 70 foot mural of Barack. Then they climbed up a nearby tree to take this picture (for a sense of the scale, note the person walking by the P in HOPE):

New Media Correspondent Patrick Furey wrote this post.

This past weekend, Senator Bob Casey embarked on a “Road to Change” bus tour through northeastern Pennsylvania on behalf of Barack Obama. Stopping in ten towns over two days, Casey encouraged Pennsylvanian voters and families to look at the candidates running in this election, and to vote for the one best representing their needs. Speaking to the engaged crowds, he said, “I believe this campaign has energized people across all groups, and that includes many families." Senator Casey and his family energized even more Pennsylvanians, and helped spread Barack’s message to many supporters and many undecided voters over the two day trip.

“Everywhere I've gone since the beginning of this campaign,” he said during one of his stops, “this turnout of people and this kind of activity and intensity, I've never seen it.” Over the course of his tour, Senator Casey made his way to Pottsville, Carbondale, Honesdale, Stroudsburg, Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, Jessup, Duryea, Montrose, and Scranton.

Last Thursday Michelle Obama was in Pittsburgh to talk about the economic stakes in this election and to explain why her husband has the judgment and the temperament to lead the country during these difficult economic times. Talking about rising prices and stagnant wages, Michelle asked a crowd of more than 2,000 at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, "Don't we deserve some new solutions?
Endorsement Sunday

On the same Sunday morning that General Colin Powell appeared on Meet the Press to announce that he will be voting for Barack Obama on November 4th, the Editorial Board of the Philadelphia Inquirer published an editorialendorsing Barack for President of the United States. Here is the full text:

Obama will lead

The situation facing the next American president may be the most dire since Franklin Roosevelt took over the job in 1933.

With the Great Depression holding the nation by its throat and as talk of another war in Europe lurched toward reality, FDR offered this country something better than money or guns - hope.

It's a commodity not to be discounted when a recession, if not another Depression, is knocking on our door. People need hope when their country is caught up in an unpopular war, and they know more soldiers must be sent to another theater. But hope is not enough.

If America is going to fight its way out of a worldwide economic crisis that has people fearful of losing not only their homes but also their jobs, fearful of unending war, then it must have better leadership than it has had the last eight years.

There are those who say this election should not be a referendum on the incumbent. But the presidency of George W. Bush colors everything about America today. His mistakes must not be repeated.

Both major candidates are trying to avoid association with Bush's failed policies. But only one does so successfully. On every issue important to America, Barack Obama offers a plan that would pull this nation from the precipice built by bad Bush decisions. The Inquirer endorses BARACK OBAMA for president.

While John McCain also promises "change," it's hard to believe that's possible from someone who, by his own admission, has voted with Bush 90 percent of the time. On key issues such as campaign finance, pork-barrel spending, and humane interrogation of terrorism suspects, McCain has indeed been a "maverick." But mostly, he and Bush have been on the same page.

More troubling was McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. This blatant overture to women voters and evangelical Christians who share her views on abortion backfired when Palin in interviews proved she is not prepared to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Over the last four months, this Editorial Board has compared the candidates' positions. In almost every case, Obama has a superior proposal for this nation. Consider:

Give McCain credit for supporting the successful "surge" of additional U.S. troops to Iraq. But McCain opposes a timetable for leaving Iraq, something even the Iraqi government wants. Obama wants a reasonable timetable for withdrawal, coordinated to protect U.S. troops, that would allow our focus to shift to the Afghanistan/Pakistan border area, where Osama bin Laden is holed up.

One of the most persistent deceptions in this campaign is McCain's claim that Obama proposes "painful tax increases on working American families." Obama would raise income taxes on households earning more than $250,000 per year. Most households - 81 percent - would receive a tax cut. The nonpartisan Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center has calculated that households earning between $37,595 and $66,354 a year would save $1,118 on their taxes annually under Obama's plan. McCain's proposal would save those same families, on average, $325.

On energy, both McCain and Obama favor alternatives such as wind, solar and biofuels to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. But McCain wrongly emphasizes offshore drilling, which will have minimal impact, and building more nuclear plants, which will take decades.

Obama would provide health insurance to more Americans. He would subsidize premiums for the working poor, mostly paid for by repealing the Bush tax cuts but also by requiring businesses that don't provide medical benefits to contribute. McCain's idea to provide medical tax credits of $2,500 per person and $5,000 for families would come at a hefty cost, ending the tax break given workers whose health care is paid for them at work.

Presidents can have their deepest and most lasting impact on American society through their appointments to the federal courts, especially the U.S. Supreme Court. Justices John Paul Stevens, 88, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 75, two of the more liberal justices, could retire soon. McCain has promised to nominate justices in the mold of John G. Roberts Jr. and Samuel Alito, both Bush appointees. That would shift the court to the far right, possibly threatening the Roe v. Wade decision. Obama appointments to replace the liberal justices would keep the court balanced.

McCain says he's committed to public education, but all he offers is more charter and voucher programs, saying competition is the best way to improve failing schools. Obama wisely wants $18 billion for an ambitious pre-K-to-12th agenda that includes more funding for early childhood education. He also would give tax credits to college students who in return would perform 100 hours of community service a year.

There's another reason to vote for Obama. It would tell the world that the melting-pot America of legend has finally become a reality - electing a biracial president whose black father was born in Kenya and white mother hailed from Kansas.

With his eloquent oratory, Obama has already taken big steps to bridge America's racial divide. In his gentle but resolute demeanor, people also see a man who can restore their faith in a national government that's been trapped in a tar pit of partisan sniping.

These times demand steady, focused leadership. Leadership that takes America far from the policies that have created so much fear. Leadership that says it's OK to hope, because hope properly directed yields results. Barack Obama is ready to provide that leadership.
Bikers for Obama in Pittsburgh

Roaring approval for Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change, over one hundred and fifty motorcyclists participated in a 60-mile ‘Bikers for Obama’ ride around Pittsburgh today. The gathering revved up at Highland Park in Northeast Pittsburgh, as friends, families, and supporters rallied at the park before the ride. After the rally, the bikers mounted and took to the streets, raising visibility and support for the campaign of Senators Obama and Biden in neighborhoods across Pittsburgh.

The citizens of Pittsburgh have become accustomed to civic-minded bikers making noise for Barack. This event was the second motorcycle ride in support of Barack that has taken place in Pittsburgh, the first being back in April during the Pennsylvania primary.
Pennsylvania: Your Health Care Stories

Over the past several weeks I solicited visitors to this website to share their health care stories with the Obama community. At the final presidential debate this past Wednesday, Barack, speaking about health care, said, "As I travel around the country, this is the issue that will break your heart over and over again." I had something of the same experience reading through the stories that came in.

I received almost thirty stories altogether. The people who wrote them ranged widely in age and in circumstances. I heard from Melissa and Fred a young couple from Erie just setting out to make a family. Melissa runs a small business with her mom, and receives health benefits through Fred's work. They considered themselves lucky to have coverage. Then, on Christmas Eve, 2007 Melissa suffered a miscarriage. The hospital care she received was exemplary, but the bills and the bureaucracy that came next were anything but. "I understood our policy (or so I thought)," Melissa writes. "You think you're covered when in fact, there seems to be only a small percentage that is actually covered. I'm so confused?"

There are a host of problems with our health care system, many plain to see. Policies are complicated and often opaque and in matters of confusion the tie always seems to go to the insurance company. Janet from Allegheny County wrote about a clerical error in a doctor's office leading to a preexisting condition appearing in her records, which has been hard to shake and has made it almost cost-prohibitive to get coverage. Robin in Northampton wrote about her son, in his twenties, a Type I diabetic and aspiring chef, who has found little access to health insurance in his chosen field.

There are two threads that run through almost all the stories I received. The first is that the gaps and pitfalls in our health system always manifest just when families are at their most vulnerable. When a husband has had a stroke, or a child an accident, hospital bills should be the last thing on a family's mind. At least that's what we'd hope.

The second theme that winds through these stories is that the health care crisis is not something people can solve on their own. In Denver, in his speech accepting the Democratic nomination for President, Barack spoke about his political philosophy as one that says government should help people do the things that they cannot do by themselves. Reading health care stories from around Pennsylvania, it is clear that the unregulated market has not provided for many people in our country. And for families who fear they are just one medical crisis away from ruin, this is not a problem they can solve by themselves. The health care crisis in America calls out for public leadership, and it is one more reason why we need Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States.

More Obama Tunes

Last week I shared two campaign inspired songs about Barack Obama. The songs came from grassroots supporters right here in Pennsylvania. Since then I've received two more song submissions that I wanted to share with you.

The first is Jeff Vann's "Obama Song" which combines breakbeats and quick rhymes about change with a timely Get Out the Vote message. "All my folks all across the coast/you need to do yourself a favor/ go out and vote."

This second song is a 45 second radio jingle by Jerry Lawson, the lead singer of the group The Persuasions. It uses a gospel style to exhort, "Everybody, let's Get Out and Vote."

Temple University students explain: "Why I registered to vote."

The voter registration deadline passed in Pennsylvania on Monday, but before it did the Campaign for Change together with Democrats around the state accomplished something historic. There are now 1.1 million more registered Democrats in Pennsylvania than registered Republicans. It is the biggest edge the Democrats have ever had in Pennsylvania, and both a reaction against the wayward leadership of the last eight years and validation of the promise of change offered by Barack Obama.

To commemorate their status as newly registered voters, students at Temple University got together with a life-size cut out of our favorite politician and held signs explaining why, to them, this election was simply too important not to be involved.
Songs for Obama: Supporter Music

If this election were decided solely based on the musical talent of each candidate's supporters, it would be Obama in a walk. Over the last few weeks we've received songs and music videos from supporters who wanted to put their musical talent to work for Barack. Voter registration ended today and tomorrow morning we get down to the final work of persuading undecided voters to join our ticket, and making sure our voters get to the polls. But for now, enjoy these tunes from two of Pennsylvania's finest musicians:

Shan Egan from Phoenixville features funk 'n groove and a hope for a unified America in "Home Grown Purple"

Nish Gaveer of West Philadelphia walks the streets of his hometown in the hip-hop video "Change the World"

The Dog Can Only Cheerlead. But You Can Vote.

Today is the LAST DAY to register to vote in Pennsylvania. Even if you are already registered, you probably know someone who is not. Email your friends. Check with your kids, especially if they are away at college. Call through your address book. We need cannot afford to have any eligible Obama voter left off the voter registration rolls. If you or someone you know still needs to register, here are your options:

Go into your local Campaign for Change office

Download, print, fill out, and mail in a registration form at voteforchange.com. All applications must be postmarked today!

Most post offices, the DMV, and your local County Board of Elections also have registration forms.

The Boss Rallies Pennsylvania: "Let's build our house together"

Nearly fifty thousand supporters gathered on a sunny afternoon to see Bruce Springsteen hold a free “Change Rocks” concert in Philadelphia today. Spanning the length of Benjamin Franklin Parkway, from the Franklin Institute to the Art Museum, people from across the Philadelphia region and the state of Pennsylvania packed themselves in to find a good spot to watch The Boss rally for change and encourage people to register to vote.

Organizers from local Campaign for Change offices addressed the crowd, urging all unregistered Pennsylvanians to register to vote and do their part to register others. Preceded by Philadelphia singer-songwriters Nora Whitaker and Amos Lee, Springsteen was introduced on stage by volunteer extraordinaire Elaine Griffin, whose volunteer work is a prime example of the grassroots efforts that make up this campaign.

Walking onstage to thunderous applause, Bruce Springsteen smiled and declared, “I’m not Barack Obama, but I’ll do my best.” Armed only with his guitar and his harmonica, Springsteen performed a solo acoustic set of classics, including “The Promised Land” and “Thunder Road,” urging the dedicated crowd to sing along.

Near the end of his set he spoke a few words in support of Barack Obama. Reflecting on his thirty-five years of writing songs about America, Springsteen talked passionately about the promise of this nation and what he sees as the “distance between the American promise and the American reality,” adding that “Barack Obama has measured that distance in his own life and in his own work.”

Strumming his guitar as he spoke, Springsteen lauded Barack’s ability to lead us in rebuilding our country together, describing the United States as a “house of dreams.” Looking back over the last eight years, and looking forward to the next eight, he added, “I don’t know about you, but I want my house back.” To wild cheers, he concluded, “I want my country back.”

As his final song, Springsteen performed Woody Guthrie’s seminal “This Land Is Your Land” as the crowd sang along. Holding up his guitar after finishing his set, The Boss declared, “It’s up to you now!” Urging all Pennsylvanians to register and volunteer, he requested, “Let’s build that house together.”

New Media Correspondent Patrick Furey wrote this post

Think about what you can do

This video was recorded in Michigan but the message could just as easily apply right here in Pennsylvania, where we have 5 days left in the biggest voter registration drive the state has ever seen.

Here's what Barack said:

If every single one of you go out and find one more person, or two more people to register... think about what that could do. That could be the difference maker...

The voter registration deadline in Pennsylvania is October 6. Between now and then, go out and find one person, or two people, and make sure they are registered to vote. You can go to voteforchange.com to download a voter registration application or stop by any one of the Campaign for Change's 79 field offices.

Hitting the Streets in Easton, PA

This weekend I spent some time in northeastern Pennsylvania, the city of Easton, home of Field Organizer Stephanie Monahon who, after a day spent watching her operation in action, I hereby brand an extraordinaire.

When I arrived at the 355 Ferry Street headquarters in downtown Easton at 8:30am, Stephanie was already there, accompanied by Dan, her ever-present high school volunteer. I had spoken with Stephanie around midnight the night before, and she was at the office then, too. Coffee was percolating from a small black machine in the corner and on a big central table the day’s canvass materials were neatly laid out, labeled and organized, poised for the dozens of canvassers who were scheduled to arrive in just a couple hours.

No doubt Easton has many stories to tell. One that was quickly evident is about crayons. Crayola’s main manufacturing plant was for years based in Easton, though like many other industries which have left town, those jobs are now gone, The Crayola Museum remains, however, and traffic was up on Northampton Street due to Free Admission Day at the museum.

Half of the Campaign for Change canvasses were being staged out of a nearby church, less than two miles from the campaign office. When I arrived it was clear that the volunteers running the canvass had learned their trade from Stephanie. A busload of Border State volunteers from New York had just arrived and though the check in line stretched out the door, the process was quick and orderly. Volunteers received their walk packets, voter registration forms and Obama literature, and then sat down for coffee and donuts. Shortly Katie, the lead volunteer at the canvass, stepped into the center of the room and provided a brief training on how to go door-to-door. It was brisk, concise, and when the gathered crowd of almost 100 volunteers stood up and got in their cars, bound for their respective canvass routes, there was a palpable feeling of confidence that this was something we could do.

My canvass group included Lynne, a local Eastonian and regular volunteer, and two New Yorkers come in for the weekend to make sure Pennsylvania joins their state in the blue column. One of the them, Valentino, was actually really from Italy, having come over to the United States for three months to pitch in with the campaign. He was flying back to Italy the next day to see his family for a few days before returning to the US for the stretch run.

When the election is viewed through cable news, and blogs, the dizzying whirlwind of modern media, it can be hard to tell what matters. But when you talk to someone at their door it is easy to explain the stakes in this election. We carried Barack’s message of tax reform to the doors of Easton, telling people about his tax cut for 95% of Americans, and his promise to put the middle class first in his administration. There is no substitute for this kind of in-person, one-on-one contact, but it does not happen by itself. It takes a skilled organizer to set things in motion, and it takes a committed volunteer corps to hit the streets and get on the phones. After a day spent in northeastern Pennsylvania, I am happy to report that they have both in Easton.

Veterans and military families from Lebanon County submit this report from a recent gathering to discuss the national security issues in this election and to show their support for Senator Obama:

More than two dozen Lebanon County veterans and military families gathered at South Hills Park in South Lebanon near the VA hospital to demonstrate their support for Barack Obama. Dennis Balbac, a helicopter pilot for 22 years who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, spoke to the crowd - which included veterans and military personnel who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea and World War II. The Lebanon County veterans and military families talked about Barack’s work fighting to improve veteran health care and expand the GI Bill, the legislation Barack and Republican Senator Richard Lugar passed to keep nuclear weapons from the former Soviet Union out of the hands of terrorists, and Barack’s plan to transition responsibility for the Iraq war to the Iraqi government and implement a safe and responsible plan to bring American combat troops home over the next 16 months leaving no permanent US bases in Iraq.

Grains of sand to build a mountain

In the crowded Italian Market, South Philadelphia, delivery trucks squeeze through narrow streets lined with fruits and vegetables straight from the terminal markets. There is a park, with a basketball court, where Chinese teenagers dribble around in groups of two or three, and nearby, the old lions of the neighborhood, cheesesteak purveyors Pat and Geno, with their lines of customers which snake off the sidewalk and out into the street.

Shouldering their way through the cheesesteak crowds, Britt, Rhonda, Jasmine and Justice try to pick out the likely unregistereds, young faces usually, new to the neighborhood and still registered to vote back home with Mom and Dad. Britt leads the way. Or rather her small bulldog does, pressing his nose into the drops of cheesesteak grease which dot the sidewalk. “Anyone need to register to vote,” Britt yells. Jasmine approaches a young blond couple three back from the ordering window. “Are you registered to vote,” she asks, poised, and disarming at fourteen-years-old. They smile and then deliver the bad news. “We are not from America,” the man says.

From Iowa on up, Barack’s candidacy has brought eye-popping totals of new voters into the political process. The total number of new registrants, counted in the hundreds of thousands in Pennsylvania alone, is particularly staggering when you consider the way they were collected, one at a time, person-to-person, and only after a dozen people might have said no first. Back in March I organized voter registration canvasses every weekend in Montgomery County in advance of the April 22 primary. We gathered on Saturday mornings in the parking lot of the Huntingdon Valley Community Library, distributed clipboards and voter registration forms, and then fanned out, to shopping malls, Little League games, and supermarkets. Then in the afternoon we would reconvene to tally up our work. Rarely did anyone come back with more than ten.

But the net effect of so many volunteers hitting the streets and each bringing back a handful of new voter registrations is enormous, grains of sand piled one by one to build a mountain. When I left Rhonda, Britt, Jasmine and Justice, the little bulldog was still leading the way, and they were headed farther east down Washington Avenue, to a busy corner where Britt had had been successful registering voters the previous weekend. As I watched them go I thought about the thousands of other volunteers spread around Pennsylvania at that very moment, mounting front stoops, knocking on doors, stopping passersby. This is the power of this campaign and its principle value, the belief, carried out each day by thousands of people just like Rhonda, Jasmine, Justice and Britt, that our collective future as a country is brighter when more people have a stake in creating it.

Steps for Change in Pittsburgh

There are 712 staircases which run up and down the hills of Pittsburgh and today they each served as a launching point for 712 canvasses which spread throughout the city to bring details of Barack's economic plan to the voters of Pittsburgh. The event, know as Steps for Change, kicked off with a news conference featuring Governor Rendell, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack. Governor Rendell focused his attention on Barack's tax plan, which has been subject to a mountain of lies and smears from the McCain campaign in recent weeks. Under Barack's tax plan 95% of Americans, including every single middle class family, will receive tax relief. John McCain's plan, which continues the Bush administration habit of tax breaks for the wealthy, would leave 100 million Americans out.

In the final weeks of this campaign, this may be the single most important point we all need to make, as surrogates for Barack, when we talk to our friends, family, and neighbors. Barack's tax plan delivers tax relief to the middle class. John McCain's does not. This was the message being carried from door to door in Pittsburgh today. Here are photos from the beginning of Steps for Change:

Huntingdon County Women Strategize Over Coffee

Women across Huntingdon County gathered at a local coffee shop on Thursday night to discuss the important role women will play in the upcoming election. They also spent time mapping a strategy to reach out to women voters in their neighborhoods.

All week long the Pennsylvania Campaign for Change has been highlighting Barack Obama's committment to the issues most important to women voters in Pennsylvania and across the country. To get involved with Pennsylvania Women for Obama, please click here.

Fourth graders in South Lebanon learn about the campaign

Earlier this week Andrew Claster, a field organizer in Lebanon, PA hosted John Mohn's fourth grade classroom from South Lebanon Elementary School. He held a question and answer for 10 students and their parents. The kids were particularly interested to learn more about Barack's background and his family, and about a day in the life of a campaign organizer. By the end of the visit, the class knew a little bit more about Barack and what goes into electing a president, and the campaign had a few new volunteers!

"I love this country too much"

This morning Barack was in Virginia to speak about public education. But before he turned to the issue at hand, Barack took a moment to talk about the stakes in this election, and the meager politics being offered by the McCain campaign to deal with them. It was Barack at his best:

Images from a week's work in Pennsylvania

Team Slate Belt gets to work in Bangor, PA. A group of Juniata college students storms dorms to make sure their classmates are registered to vote. A weekly policy discussion group meets for breakfast in Huntingdon County. Local volunteers get a close-up with Barack in Duryea and Joe Biden in Langhorne. These are images from a week in Pennsylvania, Campaigning for Change.

A cynical politics says go home, your work does not matter, your voice does not matter, do not dare to hope that ordinary citizens working together can reach for a more perfect union. But we know better than that. We know that throughout American history, every step towards a more free and more equal society has been the step of millions of people walking together.

Images from a week's work in Pennsylvania:

Barack in Lancaster: Photos from Yesterday's Event

Grassroots Blogger Jason Stevenson was in Lancaster yesterday to cover Barack's visit to the county. Coming the day after the Republican Party's cynical attacks on community organizing, the Lancaster event demonstrated why real change and meaningful reform have to begin where they have always begun, with ordinary Americans getting involved. Enjoy Jason's slideshow from the day in Lancaster:
On Labor Day, Joe Biden returns to Scranton

Joe Biden returned to his native Scranton yesterday, in his firs visit since being chosen by Barack to be the next Vice President of our country. Senator Biden has deep Scranton roots. He was born in Scranton, lived there until he was ten years old, and returned every summer throughout his childhood to visit his grandparents. He often credits his Scranton roots for informing the priorities that have defined his life in public service, fighting for the Americans whose voices are too often shut out of the political process.

Senator Biden flew into and met with a large gathering of friends and family. It was an emotional welcome home for everyone. Next, with is mother by his side, he hosted a BBQ at his childhood home and answered a few questions about health care, energy, and the war from selected visitors. The street was filled with onlookers, neighbors, and well-wishers.

One final stop at the Scranton Labor Day parade he greeted local firefighters and residents and spoke to the crowd for a few minutes over a police car megaphone. At the parade, like he had at every other stop throughout the day, Senator Biden stressed that with Hurricane Gustav landing in Louisiana, the day was not about politics, and he encouraged people to send their support to the Red Cross.

Here are photos from the day's events:

Grassroots Wrap

When I see the pictures that come in from our grassroots events around Pennsylvania, it brings home the point that Barack has making all along. The strength of this campaign rests with the strength of its grassroots base. Barack can only be in one place at one time, and there's only so much currency in television commercials. But a table of neighbors advocating for Barack at a town fair, replicated at all the town fairs around Pennsylvania, reflects the kind of power that makes this campaign unique. Here are some photographs from Super Saturday in South Middleton township, and shot from Bristol, where a Labor Day Weekend picnic brought out 73 volunteers and a reoccurrence of the "Real Men Vote Obama Sign."

Yesterday Barack visited western Pennsylvania in his first campaign appearance since delivering his acceptance speech in Denver the night before. He traveled with his newly nominated Vice-President, Joe Biden, along with their wives Jill and Michelle. They began their trip with a tour of Pennsylvanian Biodiesel Inc, a startup company in Monaca, that aims to deliver four to five million gallons of biodiesel fuel for tractors and trailers in its first year.

Following the tour, Barack held a town hall meeting in Beaver where he spoke for about 45 minutes and reprised many of the themes he delivered in Denver. The town hall meeting took place in the early evening, which yielded some beautiful shots of the event. Enjoy!

Jasmine's Last Post from Denver

Jasmine Hoffman, our intrepid Convention correspondent, was there last night at Mile High for Barack's speech. Here's her report:

The grand finale event for the Democratic National Convention was nothing short of phenomenal. We walked about 3 miles and waited more than 2 hours to get into Invesco Field. There were people everywhere. While in line, we stumbled upon a hilarious segment being filmed for "The Daily Show." Vendors were selling everything from Obama in a Bottle (a water bottle filled with Obama swag) to Barack Obama watches. The event began before everyone actually made it into the stadium. From the jumbrotron outside, we could see U.S. Olympian gymnast Shawn Johnson reciting the pledge of allegiance and then Sheryl Crowe played a few songs.

The final speech by Senator Obama was of course the highlight of the event. The crowd listened as the Senator noted many of the failures of the current administration. The crowd screamed "Eight is enough!" during that moment in the speech. The speech ended with fireworks and confetti. It was truly a spectacle. From my perspective, this event was less about Democratic pride and more about people from different political backgrounds unifying to support the person they believe will change the face of the nation.

In line at Mile High, Convention Correspondent Jasmine Hoffman

On Tuesday Jasmine Hoffman sent in a post about her arrival in Denver. As she and her husband walked around, they marveled at the crowds and the energy. Right now Jasmine is in line outside Mile High Stadium, waiting to take her place in the crowd of 75,000 gathered to hear Barack accept the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States. Here's Jasmine's report:

I'm at Invesco Field waiting in line for the grand finale event. We still have about 4 hours until the official announcement. I have never seen a crowd like this one. Everyone is energized about Barack Obama's upcoming acceptance speech and the crowd is overwhelming rallying around Senator Obama as the candidate of change. This is a star-studded event. I've heard of sightings of everyone from Oprah to Sheryl Crowe. I've heard from DNC insiders that we can expect to see performances from Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. The lines are about 2 hours long. Excitement is the air about the entire event. People from all over the country are represented at this event. I can't wait to get inside the stadium!

Report from Denver: Eric Melder prepares to go backstage

I wrote last week about Eric Melder, Pennsylvanian's very own Backstage with Barack Winner. Eric arrived in Denver on Tuesday and has been eagerly awaiting the moment, this evening, when he gets to meet with Barack moments before the historic acceptance speech. Here is a report from Eric about his first two days in Denver with Anthony, a friend and former student whom he chose to go with him:

Tuesday Morning, 8/27

I picked up Anthony at his home in Coatesville. His wife Jeannie gave me a big hug. I was surprised by hugs from Anthony’s two young sons, Anthony, Jr., age six (I call him “J-Dogg”) and “Maximus”, age 2. The boys call me “Papa bear”. I like that.

Our adventure began as we flew into Denver from Philly. Our flight was crammed, of course. Anthony was really quiet (he gets nervous about flying) so I fell into a conversation with “Stephen”, a retired psychiatrist who was traveling from Philly to Denver to see his grandchildren. Stephen looked a lot like George Burns … no kidding … so it seemed only right that he reached into his wallet to pull out a tiny, worn piece of paper! His jokes were funny.

Wednesday Morning, 8/27

This morning, Anthony and I received our credentials so we can join convention delegates at the Pepsi Center. The Secret Service has vetted us pretty carefully because we will be “Backstage with Barack” tomorrow evening, an historic event with 85,000 expected to be in attendance. Wow! We’ll meet with Barack before his speech, then be seated on the field at Invesco Field. Incredibly, this will be the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech”.

Contest winners and guests could not get in for Hillary’s speech, so we caught a ride to nearby Boulder, Colorado and watched at a restaurant over dinner. Baseball games were on every screen so we asked the owner to turn on some sets in the back room. When Hilary came on, a lot of people joined us … right off the sidewalk.

We’re really excited about tonight. We’ll be present, right there inside the Pepsi Center, for President Clinton’s speech and Joe Biden’s acceptance speech .

Keep praying for us … this is heady stuff … and we want to stay grounded. Tonight we have interviews with NPR and German Public Television. Tomorrow morning (between 7:00 and 7:30 am), I am being interview by C-Span. I’ll have to catch a cab by 5:45 am to get to the studio on time! Not easy for me … with our long schedule tomorrow.

"Seeing the election through new eyes"

Last night in Denver, Senator Hillary Clinton delivered a powerful call to continue the fight for the causes that drove her campaign by uniting behind Barack's nomination for president of the United States. Senator Clinton echoed Harriet Tubman, the great engineer of the underground railroad, urging Democrats to keep fighting for universal health care, for equal pay for equal work, and for the voices of Americans who have been left out of government these past eight years. “I want you to ask yourselves,” Senator Clinton said to the more than 18 million Americans who voted for her during the primaries, “Were you in this campaign just for me, or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him?”

Senator Clinton’s former supporters gathered last night in homes around Pennsylvania to hold Unity Parties and watch the Senator’s address. Pennsylvania Women for Obama director Alexandra Traber attended a Unity Party in Montgomery County and shares this report:

Supporters of Barack Obama and former supporters of Hillary Clinton gathered on Tuesday night across Pennsylvania to watch Senator Hillary Clinton’s speech at the Democratic National Convention and to celebrate her historic campaign!

At one of the parties in Montgomery County, the former Hillary supporters donned eye glasses so that they could see this election through “fresh eyes” and continue the fight for equal pay, affordable health care, a strong economy and a brighter future for us all. These women have promised to work just as hard for Senator Obama as they did for Senator Clinton because the stakes in this campaign are just too high not to!

Former Hillary supporters don "fresh eyes" at a Unity Party in Montgomery County

Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz called in from the Democratic Convention floor in Denver to talk about how important it is for women across the state and the country to rally behind our nominee, Barack Obama, and work together to ensure a victory for the Democratic Party in November. She asked that everyone find time in their busy schedules to volunteer, to phone bank and to recruit their friends to join this movement for change.

If you haven’t already done so, please sign up to join PA Women for Obama so that we can keep you up to date on volunteer opportunities, upcoming events and so that we can show that the women of Pennsylvania are standing for Barack Obama!
Our First Post from the Convention

Obama super-supporter Jasmine Hoffman from Pittsburgh is in Denver right now for the Democratic National Convention! She submits this awe-inspired post from her first day on the ground:

Once my husband and I arrived in downtown Denver, it was clear that Democrats had taken over the city. There were Obama supporters, delegates and media everywhere. There were Secret Service motorcades and buses covered in artwork supporting a variety of causes from voter registration to the environment camped out on every street. We travel to Denver frequently and we have never seen this much action on a Sunday evening--even when the Broncos are playing a game.

We ate at the Paramount Cafe, a popular eatery in Denver's 16th Street Mall. The cafe had pre-event coverage of the Convention on every screen and people around us were buzzing about how excited they were for the next four days. Every store window featured Barack Obama displays and convention specials.

I have never seen anything like this in my life. The anticipation of the Convention in Denver is in the air. I can't wait to see what happens when the Convention officially kicks off on today.

How Many Homes Would You Need to Own Before...

Yesterday John McCain was asked by a reporter how many homes he and his wife own. The best McCain could offer in response was this, "I think — I’ll have my staff get to you. It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you."

Today I was out in Love Park in Philadelphia asking Pennsylvanians to share their stories about home ownership in this tough mortgage climate. Craig from Allentown was in the city with his daughters. The family had planned to spend a week at Disney World this summer, but the struggling economy and tight finances at home forced them to change their plans. Instead, they were taking a "stay-cation," spending the week at home and coming into Philadelphia for an afternoon. Several other people I spoke with estimated they would probably need to own at least 50 homes before they forgot the number.

The campaign began airing a new television advertisement in Pennsylvania today which focuses on how out of touch John McCain is with the economic struggles of most Americans. Take a look:

Treci and Tarik, an organizing team

Treci Johnson and Tarik Barrett did not approach the Obama campaign in lockstep at first. Tarik was sold on Barack as soon as he read Dreams From My Father back in 2004. Treci, though, had her doubts. At the end of a two year committment with Teach For America, teaching high school social studies in Charlotte, North Carolina, Treci initially questioned whether Barack really understood the scope of the challenge in low-income school districts. Tarik was eventually able to persuade her to attend a town hall meeting with Barack in Charlotte, and Treci walked away impressed by Barack's candid and accurate discussion of the education gap. The Obama Organizing Fellows was just beginning to accept applications at the time, and Treci and Tarik applied together.

Their choice of location was a "you cut the cookie, I choose my piece" kind of situation. Tarik's enthusiasm got them both to apply. But Treci decided where-to. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, she wanted to share the city with Tarik, and so in mid-June they packed their bags and moved into supporter housing close by the Allegheny River.

Organizers approach their jobs with big numeric goals they need to hit, of voters registered, volunteers recruited and meetings held. But given that, Treci and Tarik have also tried to take a longer view of their organizing. "During the program," says Treci, "we have sought to empower our communities to not only coalesce around electing Senator Obama to the White House, but to utilize that common purpose to begin to tangibly change their communities from the bottom up." They have taught small business owners how to register their patrons to vote, and made a point of attending all the community activities and events in their neighborhoods.

Since I first spoke with Treci and Tarik back in July, they have been hired by the campaign, graduating from the Fellows program to take a leading role in organizing western Pennsylvania for the general election. Between the two of them, they hold broad and ambitious goals for the future. Treci aspires to "shape the next fundamental evolution in educational policy" and Tarik intends to pursue a career in public interest law. They both recognize the big systemic challenges facing our country, but they also understand that when it comes to tackling these problems, the path to change begins with putting your feet on the ground.

A Pennsylvanian Chosen to Meet Barack Backstage in Denver

Eric Melder of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, had donated to the Obama campaign three times before, when he received an email from campaign manager David Plouffe announcing "Backstage with Barack," an opportunity for grassroots supporters to meet Barack at the Democratic National Convention just before he delivers his acceptance speech. Melder began this presidential election with his allegiance, and his vote tied to Mike Huckabee. He does not always vote Democratic, but watching Barack through the long primary season caused Melder to change his mind. Speaking to MSNBC, Melder said, “I like how he commands respect,” he said. “I think Barack Obama has that unique influence to get people on the same page and moving in the same direction.”

After reading Plouffe's email, Melder decided to donate again, knowing it was a long shot, but hoping that he would be chosen to meet Barack in Denver. In the 100 word essay accompanying his donation, Melder explained why meeting Barack would mean so much to him, and to the one guest he had in mind to bring along. At 59 years old, Melder is retired from a career as a YMCA director and youth counselor, where he worked with kids from tough backgrounds and helped them get back on a healthy developmental track. Of all the kids Melder worked with over the years, one stands out though. Anthony came to Melder out of a hard family situation but with a determined effort, turned himself around, earning valedictorian honors in his high school class and graduating from Temple University.

In his semi-retirement Melder counsels on weekends at the Diakon Wilderness Center, where Anthony is now a Program Director, making the once troubled youth turned high school valedictorian now, quite literally, Melder's boss. When Melder received a call from the campaign telling him that he had been chosen out of hundreds of thousands of applicants to meet Barack, there was no doubt in his mind who he would bring with him. Disappointing his wife, and his three kids, Melder called Anthony, who screamed when he heard the news. In the context of the campaign, and the change Barack is trying to bring to our country, Anthony is the perfect choice. Writes Melder, "There is no greater satisfaction than being a part of positive change in the lives of those who surround us. Anthony and I will come to the convention together. Barack needs to meet him." It's fair to say, Barack needs to meet Melder, too.

Pennsylvania Prepares for America's Town Hall

The Obama New Media team was out in Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia yesterday, filming questions from Pennsylvanians that will be played each of the first three nights at the Democratic National Convention. The questions are part of a program called America's Town Hall, in which Americans get to ask questions about the issues that are the most important to them, and leaders of the party like Sen. Biden and Gov. Dean, will answer them. America's Town Hall is one way in which we're opening up the Convention to more Americans, in the same way that this campaign has brought millions of Americans into the political process.

We solicited people randomly from the mid-afternoon crowd and filmed about 20 really good ones, ranging from a small business owner feeling the burden of rising health insurance costs, to a disillusioned 20 year old who asked about the influence of special interests in Washington. Our filming was written about in this morning's Philadelphia Inquirer, and you can read the article here.

If you have a question you'd like to ask at the Convention, you can submit it here.

Pennsylvania Superdelegate Endorses Obama

CHICAGO, IL – Today, Democratic National Committee Member Leon Lynch endorsed Barack Obama, citing his ability to lead the American people in the right direction and his record of making change that matters for working families. Lynch was formerly a Vice President of the United Steelworkers of America (retired in March of 2006) and served as Chairman of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute.

Below is Lynch’s statement:

I have been active in the Democratic party since 1980 and this year there are two extraordinary candidates running for the Democratic nomination. But I am endorsing Barack Obama because he is the only candidate I have encountered who truly has the capability to activate, motivate, and lead the American people in a new direction.

“There has been a groundswell of support and a record number of new voters who have chosen change and supported Barack Obama in the previous primaries and caucuses, which serves as a testament to the fact that Barack Obama’s success is not a fluke. He is sincere about his leadership role and he has demonstrated time and time again that he can make change that matters for American families.

“Barack Obama has a long history of standing up for working families in Illinois, and he continued that commitment during his time in the United States Senate. It is clear to me that Obama is the best candidate to go to bat for working families, especially those represented by the trade union movement in the United States. I am proud to support Barack Obama and I’m committed to working for him throughout this campaign.

Help us build momentum and make some calls today!
