Say "I Will"

It is time to revel in the moment; to reflect on the history that has been made this Nov., to ponder 'our future' and to look forward to the change that President elect Obama will bring to 'us', our country and the world!

It's not over, though. This is the beginning!

I welcome you to the 21st century (we've finally gotten there!)!

Be ready, stay involved. 'Our journey through all the months of this campaign has challenged all of us. It has made us think about what 'we' can do when we work together. Our voices being heard in America and around the world has brought us to this new America!

President elect Obama has made me so proud of him, of 'us' and of our country again! Yet, he can't do it alone! Who will be there to help in our communities, our states, our country when he asks?

WE WILL! YES WE CAN! YES WE WILL bring change to America!

I look forward to working with all of you again soon!

WILL YOU SAY: I WILL?

Gail/Obama in the Heart

Effective immediately, early voting sites will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., through Friday, October 31, 2008, and for a total of 12 hours between 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2008.

"I have spoken with the Secretary of State and members of the Florida Legislature and have concluded that it is always the right thing to do to give voters every opportunity to cast a ballot," Governor Crist said. "I have a responsibility to the voters of our state to ensure that the maximum number of citizens can participate in the electoral process, and that every person can exercise the right to vote."

Prior to the 2008 General Election, Florida has seen historic numbers of Floridians registering to vote for the first time. In addition, record numbers of voters have chosen to cast a ballot during early voting.

Early voting began on October 20 and runs through November 2. Current Florida law allows for early voting to be conducted eight hours per day on each weekday, and for a total of eight hours during both weekends during the early voting period. Floridians can contact their county's Supervisor of Elections for dates, times and locations of early voting.

Florida voters can also request absentee ballots to be mailed to them until October 29.

Please see the attached Executive Order 08-217.

STATE OF FLORIDA

OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

EXECUTIVE ORDER NUMBER 08-217

WHEREAS, early voting is scheduled to end November 2, 2008; and

WHEREAS, early voting turnout has already reached record levels and is forecast to continue with record turnout. There are only 267 early voting sites throughout the state and long lines have formed at many of the early voting sites; and

WHEREAS, a historic number of Floridians have registered to vote for the first time in this election; and

WHEREAS, new voting equipment is being used in 15 Florida counties;

WHEREAS, as a result of this unique combination of circumstances resulting from the historic voter turnout in this election, there is a possibility that election officials will be unable to conduct an orderly election, and thus residents in our state could be deprived of a meaningful opportunity to vote; and

WHEREAS, because of the existing and continuing possibility of an emergency occurring before or during the regularly scheduled election, and in order to ensure maximum citizen participation in the electoral process, and provide a safe and orderly procedure for persons seeking to exercise their right to vote;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHARLIE CRIST, as Governor of Florida, by virtue of the authority vested in me by Article IV, Section 1(a) of the Florida Constitution, by the Florida Elections Emergency Act, and by all other applicable laws, issue the following Executive Order, to take immediate effect:

I hereby declare that, based on the above-described conditions, a state of emergency exists. It is hereby found and declared to be necessary to extend the voting hours during early voting. Accordingly, I order the Supervisors of Elections to open early voting sites from 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. through October 31, 2008 and open early voting sites for a total of twelve (12) hours between 7 a.m. November 1, 2008 and 7 p.m. November 2, 2008.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Florida to be affixed, at Tallahassee, the Capitol, this 28th day of October, 2008.

GOVERNOR

ATTEST:

SECRETARY OF STATE

McCain and Palin putting country 1st

It both saddens me and disgusts me that these 2 are using so much anger, fear, hate and lies to divide us at a time when understanding, honesty, unity and courage are what we need. That is what would be best for our country! So, I'm asking them to follow their own 'slogan' and put our country 1st for a change!!

Not to mention the RNC and their robocalls! Unethical and unacceptable!

What would you ask them to do to show us that they are putting 'country 1st'?

looking forward to hearing from you!

Gail/Obama in the Heart, Peoria, IL

There was a message circulating some of our groups in Florida yesterday that spread incorrect information conerning the the ID needed to vote. We're going to clarify below.

A message from the Florida Campaign for Change chief election lawyer:

I am the Obama-Biden campaign’s chief election lawyer in Florida, and I have received the 'no match no vote' message from several sources. This message is categorically false.

Our reading of the clear statutory language does NOT require that the address on the driver’s license (or other ID) that the voter presents at the polls match the voter’s address in the precinct register. Furthermore, this press release from the Florida Secretary of State definitively ccnfirms:
http://www.dos.state.fl.us/news/communications/pressRelease/pressRelease.cfm?id=330

See the last bullet:

· I.D. required and checked at the polls is used solely to confirm the voter’s identity. Not to verify the voter’s ID number or address. The photograph on the ID is compared to the person standing before the poll worker and the signature on the ID is compared to the signature on record.

Please feel free to email florida@barackobama.com with any questions or concerns.

Russia and Georgia...

I have been following some of the events in the area of Russia and Georgia.

At this stage many Americans seem to believe that we should unconditionally back Georgia. However, if what is being said about Georgia launching attacks on South Ossetia in the middle of the night is true, and that they indiscrimately bombed civilian targets; we should withhold our unbridled support. There may be some behind the scenes action that need to be addressed. Does it seem strange, to anyone other than myself, that the President of Georgia regularly calls into U.S. news media outlets? He calls our media! Ordinarilly, journalists have to try to contact sitting heads of state; but he contacts U.S. news media personally. I think it is strange. This guy appears to be campaigning for someone.

The international press is saying that the military activity in South Ossetia was an attempt by Bush-Cheney to aid McCain whose only strong suite is war. ( http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/08/15/mccain-rises-to-abbas-defense/ )

I hope Senator Obama does not take the bait. He would be wise to determine who is zoomin' who before he weighs-in too heavily on this highly orchestrated drama.

The deadline to register to vote is sneaking up on us fast !...

If you are not a registered voter, did you know that you cannot vote in the Flagler primary elections, unless you register to vote by Monday, July 28, 2008.

The primary election is when the local residents will be selecting local candidates for the subsequent election in Flagler County for positions such as Clerk of Courts, Board of County Commission, School Board, Supervisor of Elections, and the Sheriff. The primary election in Palm Coast and Flagler County will take place on Tuesday, August 26, 2008.

BE ELECTION READY:

Make sure you are registered to vote
If you have not registered to vote by July 28, you can't vote in local primaries. If you are not a registered voter, you can pick up a voter registration application at the Library in Palm Coast, or do that from the comfort of your home or office, as you can print out a blank application online at: http://election.dos.state.fl.us/RegToVote/webappform.pdf. Make sure your application is processed by July 28.

Update your address and other registration information
If the only change in your record is the change of your address within Flagler County, then you can contact the Flagler Supervisor of Elections Office at 386.313.4170 or complete the reverse side of your voter registration card. However if it is a name change, party affiliation change, or address change from or to another county in Florida, then you must complete a new voter registration application.

Find Your Early Voting Site or Your Election Day Polling Place
Early voting for primaries begins Monday, August 11. Hours for early voting are 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Saturday. Early voting will end on Saturday August 23rd. Naturally, if you did not vote early, you can always go to the polls on Tuesday, August 26 --the day of the primary election. Keep in mind though, early voting is a convenient and probably a faster way to cast your vote. When you have a 15-day window to cast your vote, there is no excuses such as "something came up" or "I got busy" when the Primary Day comes. Early voting locations include:

   - Flagler County Public Library (2500 Palm Coast Pkwy, Palm Coast)
   - Flagler Beach City Commission Room (105 S. 2nd St, Flagler Beach)
   - Flagler County Elections Office (1769 E. Highway 100, Bunnell)

Request Your Absentee ballot in Time for the Primary
An absentee ballot is a vote cast by someone who is either unable or unwilling to attend the official polling stations. If you are not sure how your schedule is going to work out, then perhaps you should request your absentee ballot. You can do so online, as simple as 1-2-3: http://www.flaglerelections.com/absentee.htm

For complete information on Voter Registration, visit: http://election.dos.state.fl.us/voter-registration/voter-reg.shtml You can also call the Florida Voter Registration Hotline, toll-free at 1-866-308-6739. If you are suspicious of frauds by any group or individual regarding voter registration, call the Voter Fraud Hotline 1-877-868-3737

In Flagler County contact the Supervisor of Elections at 386.313.4170 (or visit www.FlaglerElections.com).

Please note that the July 28 deadline (and other information listed above) are related to the Flagler County Primaries only. The General Election voter registration deadline is different, and not until Fall: October 6 is the last day to register to vote in the general elections.

One of the best ways to understand who is who in the local elections, is through opportunities to meet the candidates and listen to them.

Here are some of those opportunities:

Meet the Candidates Night
NAACP will host a Meet the Candidates Night on July 23rd, between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM at the African-American Cultural Society (4422 North US 1, Palm Coast). Candidates running for Sheriff and County Commission will participate in the forum, and the new DEC Chair Dan Parham is expected to be moderator. For details, call NAACP at 386.446.7822 (source Flagler Times & NAACP)

Online Town Hall Meetings
Also scheduled are online town-hall style debates by FlaglerChat.com. Registration is free, and you will be able to access and participate from the comfort of your home. If you are already registered on FlaglerChat.com (and if you are not, registration is free) all you have to do is to log on to www.FlaglerChat.com, submit your questions to the local candidates. On the respective debate night, candidates will answer the questions and debate in a true Town Hall fashion, which will be available for all to see. The online debates are sponsored by FlaglerChat.com, Rotary Clubs of Flagler, Flagler Home Builders Association, African-American Cultural Society, and Palm Coast Civic Association. Schedule is as follows (source FlaglerChat.com) :

On Mon, July 28 - Clerk of Court Candidates
On Wed, July 30 - Board of County Commission
On Thu, August 14 - School Board
On Mon, August 18 - Supervisor of Elections
On Wed, August 20 - Sheriff

Both are good opportunities to learn about the local politics and issues, and more importantly about the candidates and their positions on matters which concern us as Flagler county residents.

I hope this information will be of use to you and/or to people you may know.

Looking forward to an election that is civil, respectful, and just...

Let the best candidates for the county, country and the world win.

Best regards,

Kayhan Ekinci
Palm Coast Resident
and Obama Supporter

______
Note: Information above is correct to the best of my knowledge, as of the date this has been posted online (July 20, 2008). Compilation of the information and deadlines have been based on several sources which are deemed reliable. Dates and information may be subject to change. Author is not responsible for any typos, errors or omissions. You should verify the locations, dates, and deadlines with the respective group in charge.

Questions and Ideas !

I have some questions for anyone reading this: If I were to buy several copies of Obama's books and hand them out to family, friends and neighbors while handing out yard signs, bumper stickers, buttons etc., would the cost of the books be considered part of my financial campaign contribution? And if so, how would I report such?

Secondly, if anyone out there has some really unique and creative ideas on how to campaign and spread the word about Obama, I'd really love to hear your stories!

Empathy

I support Senator Barack Obama to become the next President of the United States because of his unique ability to unite so many people of different backgrounds. Barack Obama is not a perfect man, but he is real. He is sincere and has the ability to touch the hearts of people here in the U.S., and abroad. His compassion for others comes through when he speaks. He invites us to take the high road. As our next President says,"ordinary people united can do extraordinary things." He calls on us to unify, no matter what race, economic status or even party affiliation. When he speaks, the one word that continues to enter my mind is empathy. Only with empathy, can unification truly be achieved. Because of his empathy and because of his call to the nation's people to be empathetic, a movement has started like no other. The people are begining to recognize that we have a unique opportunity like never before. Let us all work to unify and get him to the place that he belongs. Let us work to heal this nation and heal the world. Let those that believe in good, use whatever they can. We can give money, or give in our actions, or good speech that will motivate others to action. Whatever it is you can do, we need to do this for the good of the people. We all live on this planet, and we all have to take responsibility. What type of America do you see in your future? What do you see for the generations to come? Do you know that what you do now, today, will effect this world's future? What do you see? I say to you, "Yes We Can." By the way, I am a muslim, and not in the least bit ashamed of who I am. I learned about Barack Obama by listening to him directly. If we listen to one another, without the "spin", our world can heal. I believe that under his leadership, religious groups, and different racial groups will be able to come together and live in peace. I know that we all are ready for something better. We are ready for a change we can believe in. Let's make it happen. Join your local group and "get busy."

Big Oil

The last week has seen a sea change in support for oil drilling offshore and in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. President Bush has been a supporter of such drilling ever since whenever. The only reason he did not push harder on it was that brother Jeb was governor of Florida and was afraid of the consequences of supporting it. Now there is an opening. Having created a crisis by lifting the oil prices to what seem stratospheric levels, the public, they think is anxious for a fix. They may be right. I hope that the public sees their ploy for what it is.

I am sure our candidate will not express his opposition in exactly religious terms, but there is much about being a person of faith that leads one to oppose off shore drilling and oil exploration and drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. Our code word for that is environmental stewardship. That is to say, our need/desire for oil is only one consideration. We know that the earth is tied together like any organism and when we cause pain or injure one part we also threaten the whole organism. As Christians we understand that we are not to inflict such pain on God's creation.

The oil companies want us to believe that because we can do something that we should. And they are right. The problem is the thing we could have done and should have and now should do is develop alternative energy sources. Not a new idea, but one the oil companies simply do not want to entertain unless they can make a profit from it. When they figure out how to charge us for the sun, they will.

In essence they simply wish to join land to land and build more and more houses in which they cannot live until they make the one house we all share unlivable. Their greed seems unquenchable. Despite having unused leases for exploration and drilling for an area larger than the state of Florida, they want more now.

They, of course, do not accept that the earth is the Lord's and the fullness there of. Instead, they view the earth as belonging to whomever can take possession of it, a form of colonialist mentality. Wendel Berry, Long Ago, introduced the idea that we were colonizing the future, by which he meant that we were going into the future and mining resources intended for that period and using them for our enrichment. The proposed leases for off shore and the Arctic Wildlife Refuge are just such a proposal. Yet, it is also a present form of colonialism. We call it economic. If they are leased, they will bid on the leases and despite any attempts to do make changes by the government, they will essentially control a huge area of the earth.

We expect courage from our candidates. Here is an opportunity for true moral courage. They can stand up to what is nothing less than environmental and economic injustice. They can refuse to let oil companies get what they want through market manipulation and fraud or reject their fraud. John McCain has chosen to be partner to the fraud as have the President and Florida's governor.

Of course, the prophets of the Old Testament tried to get Israel's kings to stand against fraudulent and unjust economic behavior. Sadly, they failed and Israel fell. Can we expect more? We have a candidate from whom we expect more.

10 Reasons

Ever since last Friday I have been engaged in a back and forth email discussion with several former collegues; most of whom are McCain supporter's. After a few negative sounding rounds we decided to list 10 positive reasons for voting for our respective candidates... I sumitted these off of the top of my head:

Keith asked we submit 10 positive reason's for voting for my candidate (I am limited to only 10 but I could give more). So in that spirit I submit the following:

1. Understands the U.S Constitution
This is the first and foremost qualification for the office of President. Each president swears under oath to uphold the constitution. Senator Obama taught constitutional law. He fully understands what it means and what it stands for. Further he understands how fragile the original document is in our ever-changing world. He has written extensively on how to be faithful to the constitution while still providing citizens the freedom to grow in an advanced society that the founding fathers could not foresee.

2. Strong leadership/managerial skills
Senator Obama designed, built, and managed the most efficient primary campaign in our lifetime. A comparison of the Obama campaign to any in modern times shows a phenomenal ability to lead and manage a highly effective national organization. As with any organization, they have made a few mistakes; but they quickly admitted them and recovered from their mistakes without a lot of drama. This skill is sorely needed in the Executive Branch of our government. Any of you who have had management experience have to be impressed by the efficiency of his operation, whether you like him or not. He has done much more but this is the most recent.
3. Ability to inspire our youth
More of America's young people have become engaged in the political process as a result of being inspired by Senator Obama. Many of them will help run our government in the future; instead of staying home and complaining about it.
4. Willingness to listen.
Obama is an outstanding communicator. The most overlooked communication skill he has is his ability to listen and understand what is being said to him.

5. Understands the interplay between domestic and international issues.
Whether we like it or not, the United States cannot isolate itself from the world community. Example: Look around the room you are sitting in. I bet you can see at least five items that came from overseas. I can name seven without turning my head. Most jobs in the United States depend on materials, tools or services that come from other countries. With satellites and the Internet the world is becoming closer knit than ever before. Senator Obama understands we must not focus on international policies to the detriment of our domestic needs, and vice versa. The domestic/international coin has two sides. One policy cannot exist without considering the other.
6. Strong economic savvy
It is not how much you take in... it is how you spend it. Many of Senator Obama's economic advisors remember how to turn a deficit into a surplus. They know how to create jobs here in the USA that will boost the economy. Just one example: Does anyone remember the information superhighway that thrived under the last Democratic administration? Those were jobs that created jobs that created more jobs. Our info superhighway collapsed when abandoned eight years ago, although similar economies are still thriving in other countries.
7. Create incentives to develop renewable energy
Today's needs call for renewable energy sources. Senator Obama is studying the success of the Germans, the Japanese, Brazil, and others who have surpassed the United States in the ability to harness power from the wind, sun, soil, and sea. Renewable energy industries will create more jobs (see number 6 above).
8. Determined to beef up the military
Senator Obama feels that our military is stretched too thin. We are wasting resources that can be used to strengthen the armed services so they can be deployed in a manner that will make us safe, instead being used to make our neighbors angry.
9. Aware of the world around him.
Obama is a guy who is aware of the world around him. He understands his friends and works to understand those who he does not agree with. He is not afraid of the unknowns in the world. He is just as comfortable listening to an unemployed veteran in the street as he is in speaking with world leaders.
10. Intelligent.
Obama is smarter than anyone who has lived in the White House during my lifetime.
Dave
How Can I Keep From Singing?

How Can I Keep From Singing?

My life goes on in endless song
Above earths lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock Im clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?

1991 Enya cut from the Shepard Moons album. The lyrics are from a very old, traditional Irish folktune ...so relevant today. I fear Senator Obama is our last, final hope in getting our beloved country turned away from the abyss. Best, Paul

FORGING OUR PATHS

I know we each have our reasons for wanting Barack to be president, as each of us knows, intuitively, this is a defining moment in our lives. One that will greatly affect our future and one day be looked upon as our history. It will be a path, our journey that we forge together, define, and shape, as Americans, as a community, as family members, and individuals. Our history does not need to be written for us by someone else. It needs to be defined by us, with conscious choices while taking responsibility for our actions. These are the choices, these are the moments, which create our journeys, forge our paths, and where we write our own chapters, and ultimately our destinies. I am inspired. I know the very first time I heard about Barack was from a hateful email sent about him, judging him harshly, and with made up lies. I never take anyone's word about another individual so I researched the email and found it to be untrue, of course. In addition, I could not rely on the words of hate for it is not a value I will pass onto the next generation. Through my research, I learned the truth. I learned who he was, where he had been, and most important where he is going. Barack Obama understands what this country was built upon; the values, the dreams, the spirit, with all of its hope and the courage that came with each and every fight to grow a nation, creating a more perfect union. Yes, I researched a man and found one who deeply understands the words, “United we stand divided we fall.” I learned of a man who was raised by a single Mother and knows the value of being a Father, and being present to shape and mold the minds of his children. I learned of a man who was ambitious, not to make money, but to make a difference, not for himself but for those who could not do for themselves. And yet, the ones that could stand on their own; he too, wanted to empower them, support them, reflect their strengths, their wisdom, their fortitude, and unite them, demonstrating the theory of strength in numbers. His wisdom led him on a path, where Americans can live their dreams, build healthy futures for our children, embrace our differences, and all with a knowing, that the sum of all parts is a whole. Barack Obama, I found out through research, not only saw all of us as making our country a great success once again, but that his vision extends, to making our race the best, the healthiest, and the most successful. This race, however was not just about Americans, it is about our race, one race, the human race.
I have followed the news daily; I have listened to all his speeches, and read all the ones I could not watch. I have learned more about politics in six months than in my whole life and I am ready to support Barack, as he becomes our next president. I may not agree with everything he says, but I do trust the judgments he makes. I know that whatever situation he stands in, what ever challenge he faces, that if I were in his shoes instead, he would be making the same decisions, I would want. Tell your friends, families, neighbors, co-workers, tell them all because we can begin improving the quality of our lives by improving the quality of our leaders.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Devotion is in the heart of all Americans. We are devoted to the America we have built, the America we have dreamed, and the America we are becoming. We are proud of what we have accomplished, what we stand for, as well as the opportunities afforded us by all of the great men and women who have served for these privileges. That service has made a difference in our daily lives, one in which we appreciate and are grateful, eternally. There is a spirit that resonates within each one of us, a spirit that guides us, supports us, and unites us. The American spirit is a very powerful force, making each one of us passionate, protective, and patriotic. As Americans, who are from all different places around the globe, who cherish and relish in the traditions handed from generation to the next, we are all fervently aware that we are all different. We can focus on these differences, we can split hairs over our views, we can agree to disagree or we can communicate, engage and embrace each other for who we are, where we are going, and what will achieve. United we stand, divided we fall is a popular quote and one with great meaning. One in which needs to be embraced now, more than ever before, because there is a wave a change that is happening, right now, in our country and it cannot and will not wait. This is a defining moment in our history where each American needs to chart our new course: define ourselves, our values, live daily with accountability, integrity, and engage fully in a life where our commitment is to making a difference. We are now in the presence of a leader who demonstrates these qualities and characteristics, let us take heed. This is not only our country’s defining moment; it is your personal defining moment. Where do you stand? What is your commitment? How do you make a difference? Do you hold yourself to higher standards than our leaders? Should you be as dedicated as the people or better than those who lead us? Are your expectations in making a difference left up to others? Or do you live passionately, honestly, generously, by improving the quality of life for those around you?

I apologize for not being in contact lately... we have been traveling for the month of April and will likely been out for most of May. I will be back in the loop by the first part of June.
Tom Feeney: FL example of why we NEED change

Re: Democratic Party of Florida

Dear pete,

Just wanted to let you know about something the state party has been working on.

Exactly one year ago today, news broke that the FBI was investigating Congressman Tom Feeney's connections to the infamous Jack Abramoff corruption scandal.

Remember Jack? Several people involved with his dealing have already been sent to jail or are on their way there, including a former GOP Congressman from Ohio.

Florida's most corrupt member of Congress, Tom Feeney, could be next.

In honor of Feeney's first "anniversary" with the FBI, the Party has purchased online ad space targeted at his district, DC and Tallahassee to inform voters about this scandal. This is the first paid advertising we've done in any Congressional race, but certainly not the last.

Click here to view the ad graphic and contribute to putting more ads like this online and on the air.

The Abramoff problem is not Feeney's first scandal in public office, but if Democrats work together, we can make it his last.

The public needs to know about Feeney's sordid dealings. In 2006, Republican members of Congress who were tied to Abramoff were defeated across the country. Still more are facing big troubles in 2008.

If you don't know about Feeney, you should. He's what's wrong with Republicans in power these days. You can learn more about him at the Party's special website: www.FeeneysFullOfIt.com.

No Hillary as VP either...

I read today that people like Mario Cuomo are suggesting a "dream ticket". Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama... whoever is on top by such and such a date.

NO, NO, NO. THis is wrong.

Hillary Clinton is the exact opposite of Obama. She is beholden to many special interests and represents the worst of Democratic politics. That lying, do whatever it takes attitude is yesterday's news. THe Clinton years need to be OVER.

When Obama talks about "change", it is more than just political change. It is a complete change of the way business is done and how can that be accomplished with Hillary as VP ??? That is truly like the fox guarding the hen-house.

Fallout From Rev. Wright

I just responded to a 33 year-old stay at home dad who lives in Florida. He is giving up his support for Senator Obama because of Rev. Wright. This what he said:

I just watched Barack on Countdown with Keith Olberman. I expected to hear him distance himself from the vile, disgusting Rev Wright. He did not. This is the end of the campaign. It was wonderful to believe in Hope. It was wonderful to believe in the American people again. It was wonderful to make new friends who shared this beautiful feeling of being on the verge of a new dawn. I will miss you all. To borrow a borrowed phrase, Good Night and Good Luck. We will all need in the coming years.

My Reply:

The end? No. You, yourself, said we are on the verge of a new dawn. Tomorrow is coming; with or without the promise of hope. We have too much to lose if we give up because someone on our side said something stupid.

I was shocked and felt weak in the gut when I heard Rev. Wright’s hateful words; much as I am sure you felt. I cannot even imagine how Senator Obama felt when he heard them. However, I can understand the frustration in the reverend’s life. I have lived that frustration. I have said hateful things. I see Barack Obama’s campaign and eventual administration as a bridge from those angry days of the past to the hopeful days of the future.

I hope you do not believe we will cross that bridge by simply holding hands and singing. That would be nice, but in reality change always creates stress. Barack Obama is the only current option to lessen the friction as we focus on change for a better future.

Obama can, and will, temper fiery rhetoric from old-schoolers such as Rev. Wright and myself. He can also speak the language of the modern world. Hang in here and help him make things better for those who will inherit this land.

I do not think the Clintons know how to stop the kind of frustration we heard from the reverend? They didn’t do it in the past. Surely the hateful words won’t stop under the shock and awe of the McCain philosophy?

Please consider what Reverend Wright has been through; and realize that Barack Obama does not share those same frustrations.

The end? No. This is merely a small cloud on tomorrow's dawn. Please stay. You'll see, the sun will shine bright after this cloud moves on.

A supporter’s simple advice to Senator Obama

A supporter’s simple advice to Senator Obama. I have no idea if anyone in the Obama campaign reads these blogs. But if you do read this, please consider my thoughts for a moment.

It is a long run to Pennsylvania Tuesday. Hillary Clinton is trying to change the game. Her attacks are designed to keep Senator Obama off-balance and away from his strong side.

The Senator should stick to his own game. For most of the week, he must ignore what comes out of the Clinton camp. Ignoring her will really punish the Clinton ego. At each week’s end, have someone do a data dump on her ridiculous ruminations. Every Friday (or day of your choosing), an articulate surrogate should counter all of her malicious and inaccurate assertions. Line-up every point clearly and succinctly in one place. An Op-Ed piece in a widely read publication would do nicely. Have the surrogate of the week, one who the media would eagerly publish, hammer home measured facts to quiet Mrs. Clinton’s half-truths and silly innuendoes.

Incorporate Samantha Power back into the Obama campaign. She has a lot to offer. People make mistakes. If I had been fired for every mistake I made, my resume would be the size of an encyclopedia. If necessary, ask Senator Obama to publicly renounce what she said, but not renounce her. After that, put her back to work. Clinton surrogates have said much worst than Ms. Power would ever say about an opponent.

During the majority of the week, the Senator should talk about his presidency. Show the world what he brings to the table. It is time to discuss, with glowing detail, his vision for the future. If Clinton sends some energy his way, he can harness that energy and deflect it into the direction of HIS choice; not hers.

The Clintons are no longer the drivers in this contest. Make sure Hillary Clinton understands that; and make sure the rest of the country fully understands who is really in command of this race.

From now until Pennsylvania play your own game, Senator. Hillary Clinton is merely a “Huckabee-type” of annoyance. Never stop showing your presidential side.

Let's Get Back to the Root of the Florida Problem

Hi All,

There is a lot being said recently about Florida and our delegates to the Democratic National Convention. And yet we have gone off track again about the root of the problem. This all occurred when our elected legislators in Tallahassee in voted to move our primary to January 29. This was against the Republican National Committee rules and the Democratic National Committee rules. PLEASE do not blame Howard Dean – he has held steadfast to the rules on the DNC.

Most recently the governor of Florida, Charlie Christ, backed getting another primary for Florida Democrats. This is not a solution. It puts a big giant body cast on the problem. It is another way for the Republican party to push Florida Democrats down - a “Let’s make it feel better”

Here is how we solve this problem - Let’s start at the root:
Who where the legislatures that voted to have the primary moved?
Can someone get me a record of the day of this vote and who voted Yes on the move of the primary date?
Let’s make sure these legislators do not get re-elected.
How?
Let’s all pledge to campaigning and voting for candidates for Florida Senate and House that will move to overturn the primary change date and move the date back to original date that was within DNC rules.

Are you with me on this?

The voters in Florida are as not stupid as the rest of the country perceives us to be.

Most voters in Florida have been mislead by the Republican cause. And most voters in Florida do not realize this. They go to the polls and think their vote will be counted. And it has been proven at many elections that many votes do not get counted.

This needs to be changed by demanding a paper ballot to prove the record.

One of the largest issues in this election in the “War In Iraq”
Here is a major solution to this – Energy Independence. And Florida can be one of the top states in doing this. We are 4th in the amount of energy that we get from our sun – and that is why we are called “The Sunshine State”. We must utilize this energy. We also lead in wind power (and I am not just making a statement about our legislators – LOL!) I started my college studies back in 1980 to study Nuclear Power and although I am still for this form of energy, many advances have been made since then on other power technologies. Let’s move this forward. We do not need the Middle East to help us.
Let’s back candidates that will move legislation forward to make us Energy Independent.
From this all the money comes back down – your tax payer dollars go to the good of our nation in creating new jobs in energy technologies instead of financing a war.

Let’s start by creating educational centers to showcase alternative energies. Each county should have at least one. These centers will educate our voters about how we can become Energy Independent. And it will only build from there as the voters demand to have alternative energy sources once they learn what our country is capable of.

Are you with me on this?

If you are with me on all of this, let me know and let’s move forward and make it so!

Let’s attack the root problem and not the pain.

Lisa Walker
Delegate to the Democratic National Convention
Florida District 7

ParaProductions Database &
My First Blog Post

Within the past seven years this nation has become a poor neighbor in the world community. We now must re-introduce ourselves to the people on this planet. Before we can do that we must clarify in our own minds what kind of global citizen the United States will be in the future. Barack Obama is the only candidate running for president who is thinking about a positive future; a future in which this nation can work peacefully with other nations to solve critical issues. The other candidates seem to want to pick a fight with any nation that attempts to grow their own economy. Barack Obama will be the kind of leader who will make us a strong but caring force in the world community.

Moreover, Obama’s organizational skills far exceed the abilities of the other’s running for president. His methodical approach to every aspect of this campaign is nothing short of phenomenal. His rivals, in both parties, have repeatedly used flawed judgment. We watched as the Clinton and the McClain campaigns faltered over and over again due to poor decision making. The United States of America needs a president who will staff the White House with a quality administration. We need an administration that can recognize the interplay of domestic and international issues; and address them, not singularly but, holistically. Obama has proven that he can produce an organization that is equipped to do that.

There are a great many other reasons I have given my support to Barack Obama, but those are the two principle reasons: his ability to heal our relationship with others in the world and his ability to build an effective and highly functional executive branch of the United States Government.

Note: I worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation for 34 years. I am retired now, but have worked for both functional and a dysfunctional administrations. It is easy for me to quickly identify the difference between the two.

I'm heading to Iowa!

I am so Fired Up right now! Since I'm a public school teacher who's about to turn 30, and since I'm living in a state where my vote won't count, I've decided to head out to Iowa the first week of January to help support Barack Obama through the caucus. Needless to say, I am so lucky to be able to do this because I have the support of my wonderful husband and even my 3 and 1/2 year old son is excited saying "Obama for President!" It's been a rough couple of years for our family, going through health problems, financial problems, and family problems, but I feel hope because I know we're in for a better future with Obama as President and I'm willing to do what it takes to help get him in the White House.

I urge all of you reading this to also considering going to one of the early states if you're blessed with an opportunity like I have been. I got a relatively cheap flight and the campaign has supporter housing and transportation for people who really can't afford to stay at a hotel. Just call Headquarters and they will get you going in the right direction. Donating is always helpful too, but they can really use boots on the ground in the early states.

If any of you have ever been out to the midwest, or in temperatures that cold in the winter, please send along some advice about what to pack. I live in sunny Florida (though I'm originally from NJ) and I almost forget what freezing temperatures feel like!

Fired Up and Ready to Go!

FRUSTRATED FLORIDIAN !!!!!

“… there is another story to be told, by the millions of Americans who are going about their business every day. They are on the job or looking for work, starting businesses, helping their kids with their homework, and struggling with high gas bills, insufficient health insurance, and a pension that some bankruptcy court somewhere has rendered unenforceable. They are by turns hopeful and frightened about the future. Their lives are full of contradictions and ambiguities. And because politics seems to speak so little to what they are going through - because they understand that politics today is a business and not a mission, and what passes for debate is little more than spectacle - they turn inward, away from the noise and rage and endless chatter.”

Barack Obama, The Audacity of Hope, p 24-25

For years I turned inward … away from the noise and the constant political bickering. For years I was registered as NPA: No Party Affiliation. So in my home state of Florida, I was only allowed to vote in the general elections, never in the primaries. My leanings have always been more towards the liberal side but my family and neighbors have always been more conservative, more Republican. So I just kept my thoughts and feelings to myself and let my voter registration card read NPA.

But then something happened. A spark … a light bulb moment … a discovery of a candidate who just might understand the way my mind worked. The mind of someone who believed in looking beyond skin color or nationality or religious affiliation or sexual orientation or personal bank account statements, to have the audacity to hope for and the determination to work towards a more harmonious and peaceful existence … not only in America but abroad!

For the first time in my adult voting life, I felt inspired … motivated … I actually wanted to get involved in the political process! So I drove down to my Supervisor of Elections office and did something I never thought I would do … I actually chose a political party! I officially became a registered Democrat!

So strong was my support for Barack Obama that I decided to ultimately choose political sides just so I could vote for him in my state’s democratic primaries!

And now … well, now I’m a frustrated Floridian. Now I find myself turning inward again.

My state’s attempt to move our primaries to January 2008 have been met with warnings from the chairman that to break the rules and regulations of the DNC would result in our primary votes essentially not counting. And the candidates … well, the candidates understandably do not want to waste time and effort and money trying to secure votes in a state where the votes could potentially not even count.

Personally, I don’t know what the Florida “powers-that-be” were thinking. Quite frankly, I’m disappointed in the Florida lawmakers’ arrogant assumption that we shouldn’t have to abide by the same scheduling rules and regulations as all the other states.

I was furthered sadden when I heard on the news last night that, in response to the DNC warnings, our Governor had said that we would not back down from our January date.

Please, oh please, back down.

How depressing it is for me to think that the vote I feel most compelled to cast might end up counting the least.

The War In Iraq

I am all for fighting the war on terror. I am all for putting an end to Bin Laden and his terrorist training camps.

But if memory serves correctly, most of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudi Nationalists. And it is my current understanding that Al Qaeda is training somewhere in Pakistan.

So why are we in Iraq?

Now I'll be the first to admit that, in the beginning, I was actually a strong advocate for the war. I supported President Bush's decision to invade Iraq. I supported our troops overseas by regularly sending care packages to them through AnySoldier.com. And when my brother-in-law got deployed to the Middle East, those packages got sent directly to him and his comrades.

But my feelings have changed.

Some people believe that President Bush lied to us, that he started a war based upon accusations that he knew were not true.

I cannot speak for President Bush, and out of a deep respect for the office itself, I will simply state that it is my firm hope that President Bush merely made the best decision he could with the best information he had available at the time.

But times have changed.

Hussein is dead.

No weapons of mass destruction have been found.

And yet we continue to spend billions of dollars on an ill-advised war in the hopes of stabilizing a foreign government and rebuilding a foreign infrastructure while our own country's infrastructure crumbles and falls.

Now I'm a patriotic person. I continue to support our troops. But my supporting of our troops does not encompass supporting the continuation of this war.

I will never forget that this land of ours is the land of the free BECAUSE of the brave, but it is time to bring those brave home!

Sen. Obama was vocally opposed to this war from the very beginning. He stated from the very onset that such would require a "US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined costs, with undetermined consequences."

He was right.
If only we had listened.

Are we listening now?

Parent's Undue Influence?????

During a recent trip to my local home improvement store, my daughter and I were both sporting Obama '08 t-shirts. When we went to take our place in the checkout line, the woman in front of us turned around, noticed what we were both wearing, then turned back to whom I assume to be her husband and said ... "I can't believe she made her wear that." And then she mumbled something about "undue influence."

Excuse me?

It turns out her problem wasn't with Sen. Obama; it was with me "using" my daughter to campaign for Obama.

First of all, I didn't make anybody wear anything as my daughter begged me to buy her an Obama t-shirt. Second of all, I wasn't "using" my daughter to campaign: it was her t-shirt and her choice to wear it. Third, as to my "undue influence" ... if we, as parents, are expected to have an influential impact on our children's lives on everything from education and community service to alcohol and drug abuse, then would somebody please tell me why it should be deemed unacceptable to talk to them about politics?

I'm not much of a gambler, but if I were, I'd be willing to bet money that nothing would have been said if we had, for instance, both been wearing Jacksonville Jaguar t-shirts (we live in northeast Florida) or even if we had both been wearing t-shirts with the name of a local congregation upon them. But for some reason, this particular woman seemed to think that children and politics just don't mix.

I disagree.

I always try to keep an open line of communication between myself and my children, whether it be about school or work, about drugs or alcohol, about religion ... and yes, even politics! And I think it's worth mentioning that my children and I don't always agree. My older son, for instance, did a scathing school report during the 2004 campaign against the very candidate that I was voting for! But I must say, he made several thought-provoking points and he ended up with an A, overall, in his Political Science class.

Undue influence? Hardly. I think at best I'm influencing my children to think for themselves.

But in my opinion, that's one of the best gifts a parent can give.

On The Economy And Globalization

I am all for a stronger economy ... but then again, who isn't? I think a voter would be hard pressed to find any presidential candidate, Republican or Democrat, who opposes such.

But words alone are not going to solve our problems. Well-crafted speeches are not suddenly going to bump America's 37 million poor into the next tax bracket. There has got to be a solid plan for action behind those words.

And therein rests my problem. Whenever I look over such plans, I am immediately reminded that Economics was never one of my strong suites in college. I always try to put too many "what-ifs" into the equation.

For instance: how about raising the minimum wage in proportion to inflation in order to create a "living wage?" Sounds great - I'm all for it ... but then again I'm not a small business owner who is struggling to pay my employees the minimum as it now stands. What then?

If a small business owner cannot afford to pay their employees per a mandated increase, what option do they have other than laying off some of their employees in order to pay the ones that they retain? The extra funds have to come from somewhere.

Or perhaps they should just increase the costs of their products or services in order to raise the extra capital needed? But of course if that should happen, then we end up back in the same sinking boat with our money's purchasing power falling behind yet again.

Or perhaps tax cuts for the small business owner are in order? But as we all know, regardless of how much we might cringe when hearing the word "taxes," it is those very taxes that pay for our streets and our firefighters and our schools; so if our government is going to be collecting less in taxes, which one of those services might end up in jeopardy?

And what about the matter of globalization? To some, globalization is like a 4-letter word ... with American companies having to downsize or outsource to cheaper labor in foreign countries just to stay competitive. But it is that very competitiveness that has lowered prices and increased purchasing power, especially on electronics and appliances once out of financial reach for many Americans.

I can remember the first computer my father ever bought back in the late eighties. It was outrageously expensive, costing thousands of dollars, and by today's technological standards did little more than what a much less expensive typewriter could have accomplished.

Nowadays our technological advances have skyrocketed but the retail costs of these products keeps dropping. You can now purchase a 100+GB computer with the latest Microsoft software at Wal-Mart for around $500.00.

Amazing.

Such is one of the benefits of globalization and free trade. However, if you've lost your job because of outsourcing to cheaper labor, it doesn't really matter how much competition has dropped the prices because you're not collecting a paycheck in the first place. A great deal on a computer or big-screen TV is irrelevant when you're struggling to put food on the table.

By the way, did I mention my grasp of economics and capitalism is very elementary? Which is one reason why I can never debate such effectively.

All I can offer is that I believe there must be a maintenance of financial equilibrium to all this. As Sen. Obama states so eloquently in his book "The Audacity of Hope":
" ... we have always been in a constant balancing act between self-interest and community, markets and democracy, the concentration of wealth and power and the opening up of opportunity. We've lost that balance in Washington."
Indeed. So here's to free trade continuing to increase the worldwide economic pie but to Americans getting a bigger slice!

On Separation of Church and State

As a child, I was raised with the evangelical canon of the Church of Christ. But as an adult, I no longer allow my spiritual beliefs to be confined to the pulpit or book of just one organized religion.

I still believe in God; I still believe in trying one’s best to do the right thing; I still believe in the power of prayer and of forgiveness; I still believe in the beauty and purpose of the soul.

I still believe myself to be Christian.

But I also believe that two consenting adults should have the right to love each other regardless of their sexual orientation and that a woman should always be able to make decisions regarding her own body and reproductive rights.

My religious upbringing taught me that homosexuality was sinful and that gay unions should not be allowed. But my political belief is that all people are created equal and thus should be treated as such, homosexual couples being given the same civil rights as their heterosexual counterparts.

My religious upbringing taught me that abortion was wrong and that such should be outlawed. But my political belief is that such a choice should always be in the hands of the woman making it, not in the hands of a legislative body that has no personal responsibility in the matter.

Regardless of the religious upbringing of my youth or the prospect of the changing spiritual beliefs of my tomorrow, I always have and always will strongly believe in the separation of church and state.

Regarding the political landscape of late, it seems to me that there are those in power who would have us blur those lines ... those who propose to speak for all Christians, those who propose to speak for my God, those who would have us believe that our governmental policy should be driven by the will of our supposedly "Christian-only" nation.

But we are not a Christian nation; we are a nation of Christians and Jews and Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists. We are also a nation of non-believers and non-church going folk who may not have "Sunday-best" hanging in their closets but who most assuredly carry the best of intentions within their hearts. And just as our Pledge of Allegiance states that we are “ ... one nation, under God ...” perhaps it is worth mentioning that such does not denote a singular God, merely a singular nation.

We must be politically united in the constitutional right that religion can be publicly divided but that such division is the very reason why religion can not, it must not, ever be used to mandate governmental policy. For whose religion would you choose to authorize such by? Which church’s “sins” would you choose to replicate as law?

Furthermore, separation of church and state not only protects our governing process but such also protects our freedom to worship. Our executive, legislative and judicial branches of government should never be allowed to repress our worshipping practices into one nationalized religion. A person's relationship with God is a very intimate thing and I shudder to think that my government would ever try and regulate when I could and could not go to him in prayer or sing praises in his name.

These are the very ideals that our country fought for, that our founding soldiers died for. This nation was founded upon the very principle of freedom of religion ... a freedom that gives us the right to worship, or not worship, a God of our own choosing.
We are a nation of many beliefs and many religions. “Sin” does not necessarily translate from church to church, temple to temple, synagogue to synagogue. And it most certainly should never translate into law by legislative vote. Being deemed a “sin” by religious canon is not enough of a foundation to replicate as governmental law; it must also violate principles of civil rights.
As human beings, we have the right to have our lives and property protected by law from others that would do us harm. But, for example, in the case of gay civil unions involving two consenting adults, tell me ... what life or property is at risk? And in the case of a woman’s right to choose, tell me ... why should such a personal, private decision, involving the woman’s body alone, ever be taken away from her? Simply because they’re deemed “sinful” by one's church is not enough to demand governmental legislation.

But on the flip side of the separation argument, there are those who seek to completely remove all hints and whispers of a God, of faith, of religion from the governing of our public lives. There are those who believe the phrase "under God" should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance and that the words "In God We Trust" be removed from our national currency. There are those who believe that the mere mentioning of God or of prayer should remain absent in speeches within the political forum.

But to do so would be a great disservice to our nation's spiritual ability to share in the broader commonalty of the belief in a higher power. The concept of a higher power, unlike some argumentative religions, unites; it does not divide. A higher power urges us to feed the hungry and to clothe the poor. A higher power urges us to provide affordable housing and to supply the educational tools needed so that our children might reach their highest potential. A higher power urges us to care for our oldest citizens and for our veterans, to respect the contributions they have given to America. A higher power urges us to provide medicine and health care for those that are sick and in need. And perhaps most importantly, a higher power loves us all - regardless of our race, our religion, our sexual orientation or political affiliation.

A higher power has many names but whatever you may choose to call such, be it God or conscience, a higher power believes in you and a higher power believes in the preeminence of democracy.

Our founding fathers had the right idea; they knew what they were doing. Their concept of separation of church and state was radical and innovative in its time and it continues to stimulate debate to this day. They understood that the concept of one's faith was a very personal issue and that faith was and still is, by its very definition, a matter of hopeful belief, a belief not needing to translate to factual governmental law. But they also knew that such faith has the power to unite, the power to awaken, the power to enlighten, the power to call a person to duty.

Barack Obama has heard that call.

Barack Obama's Call To Renewal Keynote Address given on June 28, 2006 in Washington DC is, in my opinion, the perfect example of a man of great faith demonstrating the common sense and reasoning we need when faced with the heady mixture of religion and politics. He understands the challenges and the limitations on the separation of church and state. But he also understands humanity's desire for a belief ... for a purpose ... in something much larger than themselves.

The Threat to Democracy in America

I recently saw SiCKO and while I am concerned about America’s healthcare crisis, I came away downright disturbed about the larger threat to America’s democracy. In the movie, former British parliament member Tony Benn said, “How do you control people? Through fear and debt. If you’re shackled with debt, you don’t have the freedom to choose.” Americans are very afraid and many have debt. Others in the movie agree and explain that in most democracies the politicians are afraid of the people. We, on the other hand, are afraid of our government. We need to take the power back. My purpose is not to offend the wealthy. They’ve worked hard for what they’ve accomplished, but we do need to close the divide between rich and poor. I canvassed a lower-middle class neighborhood as a part of presidential candidate Barack Obama’s Walk for Change and was shocked that most people had not heard of him. Many of our citizens have become apathetic, just like Tony Benn warns. They may not rally or vote because they have to work several jobs to make ends meet. Guess what their children are doing? Working. How are they supposed to get an equal education when many of them can’t get medicine when they’re sick or food when they’re hungry? They then end up barely graduating high school, if they graduate at all, with no money to further their education because they don’t qualify for scholarships since they didn’t do well in high school. It’s a vicious cycle. We need to take care of each other and think about the WHOLE person. Americans are ill—physically, educationally, and spiritually. We must improve the human condition. I call upon all of you, rich and poor, to do something about it. Show our government that they work for us. We didn’t elect them to get rich off of our struggles but rather to make life better for us all. In the words of my choice for president, Barack Obama—“It’s that fundamental belief--I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper--that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. ‘E pluribus unum.’ Out of many, one.”

Check out Tony Benn's documentary Big Ideas That Changed The World--Democracy. It's 5 parts but you can find it all on You Tube. It's enlightening.

I must say Romney is well-postured to be the Republican presidential candidate. Unless the Republicans are STRUCK with love of Giuliani, I think Romney will be the one. His wife, incidently, has MS. Now Edwards is on. An African-American woman was saying to him,"You don't speak to me, you don't speak to my enslaved ancestors, and you don't speak for the Latino community." Wow. His response was for her to go to his website and he would answer his question, because he really wanted to....Edwards is saying we should 'directly' engage in Iran.

Julie

President Pork
Pierre Tristam/Candide’s Notebooks,
Pork cutlets in Potomac marinara sauce
“The House and Senate bills have too much pork,” President Bush declared on Wednesday, referring to the latest “supplemental” spending bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pork? Let’s see. The bill is a monstrosity. No question about that: $122 billion to finish off the year’s fighting — and raise the cost of the wars this year alone to $200 billion, or $3.8 billion a week, or, essentially, $500 million a day. Put aside for now the demonstrated futility of it all. Let’s just take that $500 million a day, most of it in Iraq, some of it to feed Halliburton’s various frauds as it pretends to feed, clothe and toilet the troops, and compare the $500 million a day to what Bush calls Pork. According to a Times blog, the entire porkish amount adds up to some $5.5 billion, $4.2 billion of which being agricultural supports, and $640 million for something called “LIHEAP.” Hmmm. Sounds suspicious. Let’s see.

Presidential Debates & Fox News/politico.com

The Democratic National Committee sought yesterday to quell the growing tempest over the scheduling of debates for the party's presidential contenders, announcing it would sanction a debate each month between July and December. But the "sanctioned" events won't include an event being aired by Fox News in September.

"I'm pleased the DNC can help play a role in facilitating such an important dialogue with our candidates," DNC Chairman Howard Dean said in a statement. "Given our strong, dynamic and diverse field of Democratic candidates and the great enthusiasm voters already have expressed, we can expect a lively, thoughtful discussion of the issues."

The DNC said specific cities and media sponsors still had to be worked out, but the sites of the four first caucuses and primaries -- Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada -- are likely locations to host debates.

Several leading candidates had expressed concern that the multitude of debate requests would affect their campaigning and fundraising, and had requested that party leaders intervene to control the number of forums.

Many Democrats are also alarmed by an agreement by the Congressional Black Caucus to hold a September debate in Detroit with the Fox News Channel, which is seen as having a conservative tilt. DNC officials said yesterday that the debate would not be among those sanctioned by the party. Fox officials said their event will go forward as planned.

"Meet and Greet Senator Obama" March 30, 2007

Steve Pajcic's grand manor on the St. John's River was the perfect backdrop for Senator Barack Obama's visit to Jacksonville, Florida on Friday evening.

Although the weather was not accomodating, Senator Obama certainly was. I had the pleasure of meeting him...and it was a pleasure. My guest and I arrived late to the fundraiser due to rain and heavy traffic. There was quite a crowd inside, clamoring for an autograph, photograph and a hand shake. Despite the numbers, he took time with everyone. I clawed my way through the throng and gently tapped him on the wrist. He looked down at me (he is quite tall) and the crowd evaporated. The sincerity in his eyes was so apparent. The strength I felt from his hand was so reassuring. Senator Obama indulged my many requests for photographs, In fact, he even posed with my dear friend, Brenda, as I clumsily snapped a shot, ignoring his handlers ("time to go, time to go").

One contributor was so moved by his 25 min. speech she looked at me and gushed: "He is America's future."

However, the highlight of the evening was experienced by Noel Perez:

"I was a member of a group of supporters outside the house showing our signs and support for the Senator. Imagine my surprise when a plain looking white Cayenne SUV stopped right in front of me and lowered its rear window to reveal the Senator's face. He proceeded to get out of his car and shook the hand of each one of the approximately 10 people who were in our group. He asked us how we were doing, and thanked us for our support. Then he got in the middle of our group and one of his staffers took a group picture of us all with a camera that belonged to one of the girls in our group. He also stopped after the fundraiser to bid us goodbye, and again thanked us for our support. We were all just so thrilled that he cared about us enough to get out on a drizzly evening and commiserate with us. That gesture on his part reinforced what I have sensed about him all along, that he is a man of the people and a wonderful leader who truly cares about every American regardless of color, creed, or persuasion."

A great young man once said: "A true leader acts from a state of complete selflessness." That young man is my son, Patrick, who is serving America with honor, courage, commitment.

Barack Obama is a true leader who will lead this country with honor, courage, commitment.

Exciting Event at the Haas House in Sunnyvale, CA

A great time was had by all at the Haas House. Ric and Marilyn generously opened their home and hearts to other Obama supporters for a wonderful barbeque and viewing of Barack LIVE! There were about 35 of us.

It was so nice to see an American flag waving at a residence which endorses the new thinking of Barack Obama. I could do the same thing. Imagine, reviving the American flag that doesn't signify Bush, War, Secrecy, and Repression!

God bless you Ric and Marilyn!

Julie

St. Augustine Event Speech, By Brian James Dawson

Let me begin by saying thanks to Tony Owens for filling in for me & reading my speech Sunday, and all of you who organized this event. I'd also like to thank my wife and Sarah Willis for helping to promote this wonderful gathering.

I was asked to come here and talk about the issues with you, the issues as Mr. Obama sees them. I having been trying to find clever ways to recite words you can find on a website to no avail. So I'm just going to ask you a questions and let you figure out the answers for yourself.

I ask you, are you better off right now than you were eight years ago.

I remember hearing Bill Clinton say this at the 2000 Convention, but unlike President Clinton, I'm not going to answer this for you.

Are you better off now, is the world a better place, are you safer when you sleep, is this a time where you are proud to raise your children, are neighbors more like a family then people who just live on the same street?

There are many people who want to answer this question for you,

those who wish to push their wills and ideas upon on the public

serving only opinion and calling it fact

now I am not one of these people.

I am not here to tell you what to feel or think,

What I want is simple and it's for you to go on

From this event with an investigative spirit,

one that questions before it believes.

Now when you turn of your talk radio and Rush or Fraken are silenced,

when the Television is off and our nightly reminders of the evil among us is over,

when you lie your head upon your pillow before sleep,

ask yourself,

am I better off now than I was 8 eight years ago.

We live in an every changing world,

with partisans and pundits,

drive by medias and boosters of bias,

I know it can all get just a little too loud.

With so much stimulus, with so much activity,

different people trying to tell us what to believe and when to believe it,

I understand how most people can turn the channel or move to the arts and entertainment section instead of being reminded of the problems facing us.

We live in a time of so many lights and screens and LCDs that everything becomes blinding and at the end of the day all we can see are the very few things directly in front of us, like our family, our pocket books. We live in a time were a few wish to change the minds of the many, to believe as they believe, to feel as they feel. That's why I'm not going to speak about issues to you.

Are You better off now?

In these tumultuous times we have many problems.

We have numerous wars on numerous fronts,

the rate that many of us face in rent is rising

but the rate of pay is not.

We are paying more for gas,

for power,

for Internet access

all things necessary in our changing times.

Our schools look more like prisons than places of higher learning.

Our citizen still face oppression disguised as issues of states rights.

Our hero's are entering rehab or being released from jail.

All these problems we face together are being used to divide us,

shown to us over and over, interpreted and spun

on the all media outlets.

We are told we are many separate Americas

and this creates the fear needed to create followers,

but there is a man running today

a man who tells us this is not true

that there is no black or white America

only the Untied states, only our union.

My grandfather used to tell me that there is no shame in failed ideas;

only the refusal to admit our failures carries shame.

Weather it's the war on terror or the war on drugs or the war on difference,

Our government is refusing to admit its failures,

declining to try new directions and accept new lifestyles

because they didn't think they up

or because they don't approve.

It's easy to be become cynical,

it's easy to be become jaded

because the aforementioned are easier to swallow than any form of shame.

Robert Green Ingersoll said

"The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart."

I bring this up because heart is completely necessary for hope.

The heart has an obligation and self-interest in being full partners with hope,

It cannot wait for other abstracts to act first.

Without heart we can't find the strength to roll up our sleeves

and push forward in front of looming obstacles,

we can't get hit hard and continue moving towards a promised progress,

towards a better tomorrow not only for us and our families, but for all Americans. We can not lose heart,

we can not welcome into our lives indifference

if we want hope to have any chance in a cynical society.

Dr, Martin Luther King Jr. once said

We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. Everywhere I go I hear people losing hope,

I see it everywhere I go and this worries me.

When hope is lost, we are left with only indifference,

with selfishness, and the need to place blame.

It is only in Hope that we can conquer shame,

only hope can bring us together as one union,

indivisible, where justice for all is possible

where we can see passed phenotypes and gender and sexuality,

with hope the future is nothing but infinite progress.

Mr. Obama has spent much time talking about the audacity hope

and I want to second that idea,

the bravado we must have to wish for a better tomorrow,

what tenacity to put our shoulders to the wheel of status quo

and push it towards something different, towards liberty.

I believe, no I feel, in the deepest realms of my being,

that Senator Obama is the man to lead us

from the pits of two minute sound bit issues and solution spin

towards the round table of bi-partisan conversation and compromise.

He urges us to not only let hope into our hearts

but to spread it around like gossip,

to our neighbors, friends, family, community,

to the world.

Senator Obama reminds us of the genius

our founders showed by designing a system of government that can be changed and that in the face of impossible odds,

people who love their country can change it.

He reminds us to have heart

in the face of all our obstacles, he reminds us of hope.

As a people, we are faced with many important decisions,

Some of us have children going to war, some have them going to college,

There is the rent and food and clothing,

But none more important than the one we choose to led us.

Into the fire and into the fight, the one we choose

Must come with the answer to my question,

Are we truly better off now than eight years ago

They must re-sew the fractured fabric Of the American dream

and return it to the many and not the select few,

because that is what makes this country great

and I quote Senator Obama

If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read,

that matters to me, even if it's not my child.

If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription

and has to choose between medicine and the rent,

that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother.

If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process,

that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief "I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper" that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams,

yet still come together as a single American family.

"E pluribus unum." Out of many, one.

The end of this road is far off.

Most Americans haven't even given this race much thought,

so I salute all of you here today.

It is not only our responsibility, it is our job to give this decision,

the decision of who should be president of these united states,

it's due diligence, to read and listen, to question and investigate.

I urge everyone to go home and read the about the issues

set forth by not only Senator Obama, but all the candidates,

I urge you to make up your own mind.

Until these races end,

people are going to try and sway you towards one side or another

and that is not what I hope to achieve today,

though I'd pleased to see a million Obama tee-shirts

in St. Johns and Flagler county.

I hope that after hearing my words,

you go back into your homes

and ask yourself am I better off today

and after doing so explore the issues and solutions before you

find one that suits your own morality, your own heart.

I'd like to end with a quote of Senator Obama.

In the end, that's what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope?

Ike Spiked

What Bush Squandered
Pierre Tristam/Daytona Beach News-Journal, March 13, 2007

Browsing through a used bookstore the other day I did something I hadn’t done since reaching the age of consent two and a half decades ago. I picked up one of those old National Geographic issues with the pictures of doffed and frolicking natives. Except that the natives inside weren’t the bouncy kind from Bali or Burundi . They were from countries we’ve come to know as breeders of anti-Americanism or out-and-out enmity: France, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, the kind of places where, if President Bush was to venture — as he has been venturing through Latin America last week — he’d be burned in effigy and local authorities would have to mobilize the equivalent of two military brigades to protect him. Colombia , the third-biggest recipient of American aid in the last decade and supposedly its greatest ally south of the Rio Grande , had to do just that for a Bush stop-over lasting just a few hours on Sunday.

But the Geographic was dated May 1960. The 63 pages featuring all those countries fell under the banner of a single article entitled, “When the President Goes Abroad.” And in every country, in almost every picture, Dwight Eisenhower’s presence was cause for delirious celebration. It didn’t matter where: Madrid , Kabul , Teheran, even Karachi , that now-seething Pakistani sweatshop of hatred for America . (Daniel Perl, the Wall Street Journal reporter, was beheaded by Islamic militants he was investigating in Karachi ). “From his open car,” the Geographic wrote of Eisenhower’s stop in Karachi , Eisenhower “waved to cheering Pathan tribesmen wearing baggy white trousers, long-tailed white shirts, and faded turbans.” The car he was traveling in was actually an open horse-drawn-carriage, slow and providing not even shade from the sun.

The Weekend Essay, Britney, Harry, Anna and Me

Pierre Tristam/Candide’s Notebooks, March 9, 2007

James Madison didn’t have Britney Spears and Harry Potter in mind when he worried about the tyranny of the majority. His concerns oriented more toward the danger of political blocs acting like mobs by force of numbers. Madison’s solution: the Bill of Rights as a legal check, and the multiplication of political factions for civic balance. Great for the polity. But what about majorities outside the political process, where market forces apply but the Bill of Rights doesn’t, where most of us spend our lives and sustain the cultural swarms and smarms of Nielsen ratings and Hollywood IQs, where careers and counter-trends are made, mangled and spat out on whims, where the narrow aperture of what makes a news cycle and how long it makes it for is a modern Crock Inquisitor? Tyranny in those cases is so alive in the United States, so bouncy, that it provides a full-frontal view of American society’s Achilles’ hells (no, not heels): love of judgment, the need to conform, the comfort of mobs. It’s a story as old and treaded over as “The Scarlet Letter,” “Main Street,” “The Crucible” and “The Human Stain.” If those are refined examples, lost for the most part on dozing English majors and faithful choirs, the themes behind those works have been on display for the last few weeks with the vengeance of the Furies. The people involved — Britney Spears, Anna Nicole Smith and Daniel Radcliffe, the 17-year-old star of the Harry Potter manufacturing co. — are either dead or rich, famous and seasoned enough in public-lynching theater to handle it. But it doesn’t diminish the luridness of the spectacle, or what it says about those who pile it on. And the society they pile it on.

Pounce it on is more like it: Should Britney Spears have been partying so much? Should she have shaved her head? Was that an unshaven hair under her left armpit? Was her bikini wax Brazilian enough? Should she have gotten so many tattoos? Shouldn’t she be wearing underwear more often?

Massachusetts Democratic Party chairman supports Obama

Democrats' party chief casts his lot with Obama
By Brian C. Mooney, Globe Staff | March 9, 2007

Philip W. Johnston, the Massachusetts Democratic Party chairman who served in the Clinton administration, declared his support yesterday for Senator Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Clinton's top rival for the party's presidential nomination.

Calling Obama "the future of our party," Johnston also said the first-term Illinois Democrat's strong opposition to the war in Iraq was an important factor in his decision. Johnston, who met with Obama last week in Washington, said he will join the candidate's national finance committee and offer advice on healthcare.

Johnston, who plans to step down this spring as state party chairman, was appointed New England regional administrator of the US Department of Health and Human Services during President Clinton's first term. He now operates a healthcare consulting business.

Backing Obama "was a difficult choice, in that I had been a Clinton appointee and I know Hillary, and I respect her a great deal," Johnston said.

Johnston, who won the Clinton administration post because of his strong ties to Senator Edward M. Kennedy, said he is disappointed that Mrs. Clinton, a second-term senator from New York, has not acknowledged that she made a mistake by voting in 2002 to support the Iraq war resolution.

Johnston is not the first significant Bay State Democrat with Clinton ties to join the Obama

Hi...

Like many, I've wondered why Senator Obama's campaign hasn't been avidly embraced by the black community. While I certainly expect the black vote to have to be won, there's a certain skepticism I feel when talking with fellow blacks that I hadn't been able to put my finger on. This short CNN article (link) addresses it.

Any ideas on addressing these reservations?

Chuck
